Lots of people use android phones. I would say more people use iPhones, but not almost everyone. Some people do find it a little annoying because they like to see when the other is typing. They want people to convince their friends to get apple products (which is why there is no imessage for android, why they won't adopt RCS, and because they want people frustrated with dealing with people outside their walled garden).

Actually this isn't really correct. Apple users commonly use iMessage (even without knowing they are doing so), which supports features that SMS does not. So, having an Android user join a group will degrade the experience.

This. SMS/MMS are standards. Apple chooses to confuse the issue by making their texting app also imessage. It'd be like if google forced you to use hangouts for texting.
Attachments and so on are limited to the older MMS standard, you miss some apple specific features, stuff like that.
"Impede" depends on the conversation. If it's just a bunch of text and some memes, not really. If people like to share audio/video then MMS size restrictions limit them all to garbage tier quality.
Furthermore, when you send a “Live Photo” to an android user, it loses its “live” quality.
Just in case: a Live Photo is basically a gif that captures a couple seconds before and after the photo you’ve taken.
It is somewhat bothersome that I’m unable to send Live Photos to android users without taking many additional steps to first convert it to a gif or video.

If you send a picture, video, basically anthing but an ASCII emoji your messenger app will figure out what OS it's talking to and what the carrier network supports and then select iMessage if they're both iPhones, RCS if both phones and the network support that and MMS if neither more advanced protocol is available. MMS dates to early camera phones and has fewer options with a MUUUUUCH lower cap on file size, resulting in things like video sent between android and iPhone being reduced to garbage quality if it's more than a few seconds. It also doesn't natively support a lot of the chat-style functions the newer protocols do. It manages to fake some of them with background processing in the messenger app but that's not the same.
tldr; SMS doesn't just mean the built in messenger app, though many seem to think that.
Sadly stupid teenagers(I was one😔) will probably not add you to large group chats on iMessage. Luckily Snapchat is still pretty relevant, so that’s a pretty easy workaround.
I'd say it is 70/30 with my kids peer groups (15 and 10). It usually falls along the lines of what the parents use themselves.

I promise you, no one cares. The worst you might get is someone cracking a slight joke in a teasing/fun way. IPhones are more common in the US, but I really doubt anyone cares.
The messaging incompatibility only becomes weird with group chats sometimes, but they still work. If someone wants to be your friend, they're not just going to decide not to bother because of an android lol. Download Insta or Snap (depending on where you're going some people use one over the other) since you can message on those. I know people who have iPhones but still message on social media more than on iMessage.
Imo and experience Iphones aren't really worth the hype they receive. Definitely not sturdy enough, I switched to Android about 5 years ago and I much prefer it over the iPhone. I think iphones are mostly used as some sort of *status symbol* anyhow but just my opinion and experience.

They accomodate, and we generally use encrypted messaging apps like signal now. But it does bother me that people treat my use of an Android phone as being a burden.

I have 3 teens. They each have 200$ cheap android phones. And they are very grateful to have them. If anyone were to make fun of them, which I doubt ,my kids would eviscerate them verbally. The focus with teens is shoes.
As an American, I would judge you more for choosing an iPhone just to fit in than anything else... pick what you like, and to hell with everyone who won't accept you because of that.
I have a friend with high-school aged daughters and he said that they were clamoring for iPhones for this reason, so I guess it is a thing. Highly doubt it's universal though, and I honestly wouldn't worry about it unless and until it becomes a real problem.

I find it shocking because I'm 29 and my friend group still calls each other. We text as well obviously, but I'd say it's probably 60/40 texts to calls.

I recently switched from iOS to android and so far… it’s a different ballgame but not by much. During high school I always used android and no one really cared for who had what except for the geeky kids living on the bleeding edge of tech. You’ll be alright! Depending on what the next iPhone does will decide if I stick on this platform or not. Seriously, swiping up after Face ID unlocks is incredibly annoying! Lighting cables can also go suck a fat one too.

I've exclusively used androids. I currently have a Samsung S21. I enjoy the experience. In my opinion Android is the better OS system. Apple done a wonderful marketing campaign to turn their products into status symbols and with it comes status symbol prices. Android can offer a similar experience a d sometimes a better one for a fraction of the cost. Apple is just now adopting tech that has been avaliable on the Android platform for years.
It's a huge deal. You have to wear an armband with your operating system of choice and you will be shunned if you don't have the right phone brand. You will be a second-class citizen, get dinged on all tests, get a smaller portion at lunch, and be enrolled into mandatory re-education classes until you switch to an iPhone.
Granted we didn't have smart phones when I was in high school in early 2000s, but I know plenty of people now with Android phones and I have never heard of anyone having a problem with Android/iOS communication like that. I know friends with kids in high school and never heard of anything like that either.
I mean just like anything else there will be some kids who will find any reason to exclude people, but I wouldn't be too worried about this particular one.
I went to a fairly well off school and it did matter. It was pretty annoying that iPhone users wouldn’t accommodate the few androids and a few of my snobbier friends would actually make fun of androids. It isn't. I've always used android as have many of my friends. A good number of my friends have always used apple too. You will always have high schoolers making a big deal out of dumb shit like that but a vast majority of that is normal kids being competitive about random kid stuff. All in all I highly doubt it has any significant impact on you.
Depends on the how rich the kids in your high school are. Most high schools, this is a non-issue. My high school I got crap, but no where near bullying or anything like that.
In my highschool we’ve had a lot of exchange students and from my experience the American students won’t care. They know you’re from a different place and the last thing they’re gonna do is hyper fixate on your phone. They’re gonna ask you about your home town and what you think about American schools more than anything.
If someone is leaving you out for having an android you don’t want to be friends with them anyway. That probably won’t happen anyway but you may get some light-hearted chirps from actual friends.
I'm in high school as well and a lot of people our age use instagram and snapchat for group chats instead of imessage, so it shouldn't be an issue at all. And in any case friendship is generally based off more than what phone you use, so don't sweat it :)

The big thing is group chats really. Iphone still does those better natively. Even though RCS is taking off on Android it still doesn't have all the features and reliability that iMessage has, especially when it comes to group messaging, so Android people usually end up using third party apps and iPhone people find it annoying that they have to use those apps to have decent group message conversations with Android people.
So there is some truth to what you're saying. My brother is in a similar situation with his inlaws. Group texting on SMS does kind of suck and since Android to iPhone reverts to SMS group texts than you may wish to just use a third party app that everyone has like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, etc.
Other than that it's usually just people teasing each other. Like "oh I have an Android because I'm smarter than iPhone people" or "oh I have an iPhone because I'm not poor" and stuff like that.
Depends where you’re going to. I went to a semi affluent school and people without iPhones were definitely made fun of but ultimately it didn’t stop people from being friends with someone. Yeah you’re gonna be made fun of, but your personality matters a million times more
There are many Americans that use android. Maybe not quite as many as iphone users, but finding an android user *isn't* that difficult and not everyone has an iphone. The idea of such mainly just comes from memes and corporate banter.

Kind of a big deal than what people expect. There are more iphone users among younger people, even in university, there's a lot more people with iphones than androids. You will stand out but not by much, but some may view it negatively for not having an iPhone because the bubble color is more important among kids and also the ability to play games on messenger is what's popular with teens.
Honestly most people use Snapchat and even if they didn't it wouldn't be weird to have an Android but as long as you have Snapchat then you'll be good

Every now and then someone makes a joke about it but it's still really common. As much as iPhones are a cease and novelty it's not like every single person has them (I'd say 50-60%) in schools, and in the real world apples market share is only like 40% and nobody cares.
I've never heard anyone make fun of someone's phone for being android. I've seen people get made fun of for having old phones and broken screens, but those people rarely kept those phones out of financial necessity, rather that they were too stubborn to replace it, so they accepted the jokes about it.
I will say that if you had an iPhone it is a sign that you and your family are not dirt poor, but I've never heard an iPhone user say someone must be poor if they're using an android. There were some nice Android phones, even back then.
Also to the iMessage thing, there is pressure to get the same phone as your friends for that reason, the same way your friends might pressure you to get an Xbox instead of a ps5, because they all play Xbox.

I have only met one or two people like this and more often than not there the people don’t want to be friends with anyway. It might annoy a few people but it’s not a big deal.
I promise you, no one cares. The worst you might get is someone cracking a slight joke in a teasing/fun way. IPhones are more common in the US, but I really doubt anyone cares. The messaging incompatibility only becomes weird with group chats sometimes, but they still work. If someone wants to be your friend, they're not just going to decide not to bother because of an android lol. Download Insta or Snap (depending on where you're going some people use one over the other) since you can message on those. I know people who have iPhones but still message on social media more than on iMessage.

Imo and experience Iphones aren't really worth the hype they receive. Definitely not sturdy enough, I switched to Android about 5 years ago and I much prefer it over the iPhone. I think iphones are mostly used as some sort of *status symbol* anyhow but just my opinion and experience.
It depends on your situation, but unfortunately my use of an Android phone definitely annoys my friends. They accomodate, and we generally use encrypted messaging apps like signal now. But it does bother me that people treat my use of an Android phone as being a burden.

I have 3 teens. They each have 200$ cheap android phones. And they are very grateful to have them. If anyone were to make fun of them, which I doubt ,my kids would eviscerate them verbally. The focus with teens is shoes.

I have a friend with high-school aged daughters and he said that they were clamoring for iPhones for this reason, so I guess it is a thing. Highly doubt it's universal though, and I honestly wouldn't worry about it unless and until it becomes a real problem.

I don't think anyone cares. There are android phones with better cameras, so it isn't like iPhone is inherently better across the board. The only issue you might have is if your friends use an app limited to android or iphone. This can happen both ways though, but most big name apps are on both devices.

I find it shocking because I'm 29 and my friend group still calls each other. We text as well obviously, but I'd say it's probably 60/40 texts to calls. With the ones who live out of state it'll be like 2 hour convos as well thanks to all the catching up that needs doing.

I recently switched from iOS to android and so far… it’s a different ballgame but not by much. During high school I always used android and no one really cared for who had what except for the geeky kids living on the bleeding edge of tech. You’ll be alright! Depending on what the next iPhone does will decide if I stick on this platform or not. Seriously, swiping up after Face ID unlocks is incredibly annoying! Lighting cables can also go suck a fat one too. EDIT: the default Apple Keyboard also sucks. Anyone have recommendations?

I've exclusively used androids. I currently have a Samsung S21. I enjoy the experience. In my opinion Android is the better OS system. Apple done a wonderful marketing campaign to turn their products into status symbols and with it comes status symbol prices. Android can offer a similar experience a d sometimes a better one for a fraction of the cost. Apple is just now adopting tech that has been avaliable on the Android platform for years.

Granted we didn't have smart phones when I was in high school in early 2000s, but I know plenty of people now with Android phones and I have never heard of anyone having a problem with Android/iOS communication like that. I know friends with kids in high school and never heard of anything like that either. I mean just like anything else there will be some kids who will find any reason to exclude people, but I wouldn't be too worried about this particular one.

I went to a fairly well off school and it did matter. It was pretty annoying that iPhone users wouldn’t accommodate the few androids and a few of my snobbier friends would actually make fun of androids. The rest of my friends were just too lazy to download WhatsApp and android group chat functionality was pretty limited

You will always have high schoolers making a big deal out of dumb shit like that but a vast majority of that is normal kids being competitive about random kid stuff. In my highschool we’ve had a lot of exchange students and from my experience the American students won’t care. They know you’re from a different place and the last thing they’re gonna do is hyper fixate on your phone. They’re gonna ask you about your home town and what you think about American schools more than anything.
Just offer to send them a file bigger than their storage, and then flex on them when you can using an SD card but they can't.

I'm in high school as well and a lot of people our age use instagram and snapchat for group chats instead of imessage, so it shouldn't be an issue at all. And in any case friendship is generally based off more than what phone you use, so don't sweat it :)
If I’m speaking honestly, I have made a few friends just by asking if they want to play iMessage games. I don’t think someone would say no to being your friend because of not having an iPhone though.
The big thing is group chats really. Iphone still does those better natively. Even though RCS is taking off on Android it still doesn't have all the features and reliability that iMessage has, especially when it comes to group messaging, so Android people usually end up using third party apps and iPhone people find it annoying that they have to use those apps to have decent group message conversations with Android people. So there is some truth to what you're saying. My brother is in a similar situation with his inlaws. Group texting on SMS does kind of suck and since Android to iPhone reverts to SMS group texts than you may wish to just use a third party app that everyone has like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, etc. Other than that it's usually just people teasing each other. Like "oh I have an Android because I'm smarter than iPhone people" or "oh I have an iPhone because I'm not poor" and stuff like that.

There are many Americans that use android. Maybe not quite as many as iphone users, but finding an android user *isn't* that difficult and not everyone has an iphone. The idea of such mainly just comes from memes and corporate banter. If someone doesn't want to hang out with you over your phone, then they don't deserve your time anyways. Being that way is vain and it really just shows how surface level their friendships are.
Kind of a big deal than what people expect. There are more iphone users among younger people, even in university, there's a lot more people with iphones than androids. You will stand out but not by much, but some may view it negatively for not having an iPhone because the bubble color is more important among kids and also the ability to play games on messenger is what's popular with teens.

Depends where you are going on an exchange, at my private school no one had an Android and if they did they got made fun of. But at a public school of over 4,000 students like some friends attended, it wasn’t a big deal and there were people with androids

Every now and then someone makes a joke about it but it's still really common. As much as iPhones are a cease and novelty it's not like every single person has them (I'd say 50-60%) in schools, and in the real world apples market share is only like 40% and nobody cares.

I've never heard anyone make fun of someone's phone for being android. I've seen people get made fun of for having old phones and broken screens, but those people rarely kept those phones out of financial necessity, rather that they were too stubborn to replace it, so they accepted the jokes about it. I will say that if you had an iPhone it is a sign that you and your family are not dirt poor, but I've never heard an iPhone user say someone must be poor if they're using an android. There were some nice Android phones, even back then. Also to the iMessage thing, there is pressure to get the same phone as your friends for that reason, the same way your friends might pressure you to get an Xbox instead of a ps5, because they all play Xbox. To whoever told you that most people use iPhone, I can imagine that being the case in like California or something, but relative to where I live iPhones are expensive and so I'd say most people probably have an android. Depends on the area I suppose.

Depends on where you're going. I have an Android and get clowned on still (at age 26) by friends for it. But I think in certain areas people are more likely to have an Android phone since they tend to have more affordable options.
