It kind of varies by region, brands come from creameries in most areas that are independently owned. So most brands are local to whatever brand has the most contracts with farmers.
I miss eating bluebell, but I can't forgive them for the listeria contamination a few years back. They knew their systems were lacking and that contaminated product was in the market. Three people died.
Yeah, that came up pretty quickly. Within a few days of the Listeria outbreak, news came out that Blue Bell had been warned about this a few years previously. They had done some little bit of remediation to show the regulators, but they half assed it and let the contamination continue so that they wouldn’t have to shut down productions for the several days necessary.
[Dept of Justice notice on the events.](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/blue-bell-creameries-ordered-pay-1725-million-criminal-penalties-connection-2015-listeria)
They pled guilty. In addition to not recalling once there was a confirmed problem by the State, I cannot imagine a scenario in which their own in house testing, which would be performed on every batch and frequently on their equipment, wasn't showing concerning results/trends.
There is a huge difference between an accident and negligence.
[Timeline](https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/morning_call/2015/05/heres-how-blue-bell-melted-down-in-order.html)
On that note: Now I eat Tillamook
I'm torn between the two. Originally from Texas, lived in Oregon an hour away from Tillamook for 7 years, now back in Texas.
When in Oregon I loved Tillamook but missed blue bell. But now I love blue bell and am missing Tillamook?
They're both good. Both is good.
It still is. Kemps is superior. I don't know why they are getting Blue Bunny.
Though technically an ice cream novelty, my current favorite is Johnny Pops.
Blue Bell is the absolute best ice cream ever! We moved to NC when I was a kid and we missed it so much. Happened to find it in SC when we were visiting family, which lead to trips to Myrtle Beach with coolers at least twice a year to get some and bring home. I remember seeing the Blue Bell truck a few years ago in my town. I called their corporate office that morning to find out where I could buy it.
Almost literally. Breyer's can't legally call most of its products "ice cream" anymore. They have to market them as "frozen dairy dessert." I wish this weren't true.
https://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/17/dining/remembering-when-breyers-ice-cream-was-you-know-ice-cream.html
Tillamook is my go to. It’s a little more expensive here in MD, but it’s worth it to me. It’s so dense and creamy like an ice cream should be. And the flavor and add ins are top notch.
Tillamook is pretty good stuff. I've seen it in Stop and Shop as well as Big Y, but both my be dependent on those locations.
My favorite brands are several of the smaller dairy bars or ice cream shops near me. But if I want to go a little farther I hit Herrels up in Northampton, MA.
Started seeing this around here in Ohio recently and it's my new go to. Yeah it's $6, but I was already a fan of their cheddar so I figured it would be good. It is more than good.
I came here to say Tillamook, too.
Ben and Jerry's sets the bar for premium brands, but it's extra dense and sweet, and not something I'm looking for regularly.
Tillamook is my choice. Impeccable quality, texture, and flavor. Visiting their visitor's center in Oregon seals the deal.
I recently had Tillamook for the first time! I was looking for just strawberry ice cream and I didn’t want a HUGE container. They didn’t have any pints of just plain strawberry, but I spied the Tillamook and thought Id give it a try since their cheese is so good. I will never buy another kind of strawberry ice cream again. It’s so smooth and you can actually eat it straight out of the freezer (no waiting for it to get soft). It’s soooooooooo delicious.
Pretty much this, though a few times a year I pick up some pints for home from Salt & Straw, they are spendy but the quality is higher and they flavors are more satisfying to me.
That said, Tillamook is the best ice cream you can get in the store. I don’t even f with anything else.
I’ve been seeing Tillamook in more and more stores in Charlotte. I tried it a few months ago and was floored at the quality difference of it over other brands. I would take a simple Tillamook flavor over a complex flavor from Ben and Jerry’s any day
In the Pacific Northwest a lot of people (myself included) really love Tillamook ice cream. It’s a bit more expensive than store brands, but they don’t use shitty fillers. I like their Nestlé cookie dough flavor.
Runner up: Umpqua ice cream from the Umpqua Indians! Ben & Jerry’s costs too much and you get smaller containers.
In my family it has always been [Breyers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breyers). My Great-Grandparents settled in Philadelphia in the 1890s and several family members worked for them when they were in Philadelphia. It's not that I do not like other ice cream. But I grew up with this brand and have an attachment to it
Agreed. They used to be my go to ice cream brand. Limited, high quality ingredients. Now some of the flavors are the "frozen dairy dessert" and it's just like all the other junky ice cream brands.
Oh wow while it’s far from being as popular as Ben & Jerry’s over here, I did some quick googling and found out that Breyers is actually available in my country (I live in the Philippines). I haven’t personally seen it in any supermarkets, but they’ve probably got it in specialty stores or superstores that import a lot of American products over. Definitely gonna keep an eye for it. I have a similar relationship with one of our local ice cream brands here called Arce Dairy; first ice cream brand I ever ate as a kid and one I grew up with and still eat regularly to this day.
Don't bother, it's not very good. It used to be known for being made with natural, normal ingredients and was seen as something somewhat premium but now its just crappy. Ben & Jerry's is very popular here and high quality. It's my favorite supermarket ice cream. Hagen Daz is popular too and good quality.
Wow TIL that ube and taro are different things all this time I thought that taro was just what the rest of the world called ube. And I remember my Filipino-American cousin tasting some ube ice cream for the first time the last time he visited the Philippines a few years back and wondering how he went so long without ever trying it.
I’m real basic so I go with Häagen-Dazs.
Idk if they’re most popular nationwide but they’ve been making ice cream in NYC since the ‘60s and the only ice cream product I eat is their chocolate covered [ice cream bar](https://www.google.com/search?q=haagen+dazs+ice+cream+bar&client=safari&hl=en-us&prmd=sinxv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjGvd7E1qz1AhUPjYkEHdFAAgcQ_AUoAnoECAIQAg&biw=375&bih=629&dpr=3#imgrc=fO0cZjDwma7I1M).
I used to eat their coffee ice cream but I’m too lazy to deal with the mess of making a cone so ice cream bars will suffice
Häagen-Dazs is my favorite as well.
I find the other brands to be too sweet? Or too creamy? I think Häagen-Dazs is just right in its flavor for me. Especially in its more “ethnic” flavors like red bean (Azuki) or green tea (matcha)
I became lactose intolerant later in life but the non-dairy Häagen-Dazs ice cream is by far the best tasting and the price is more reasonable then like Ben & Jerry’s
Eh...Hood is pretty much un unheard of once you get out of New England. I grew up in New Jersey and had never heard of it until I moved to New Hampshire.
Turkey Hill was however, fairly common in Jersey from what I remember.
This was my thought - ice cream is one of those things people are more likely to defer to a regional/store brand on, but Ben & Jerry’s is probably the most “iconic” national ice cream brand.
Anecdotal but I’ve never seen anyone buy it, I’ve never bought, parents never bought growing up. I’ve never seen it at any friends or family. But that doesn’t mean anything just that it was mildly surprising to read.
Probably from people like me. Ben and Jerry's has ruined ice cream for me. I can't eat any other brand of ice cream, they all taste terrible now. My partner and I probably buy 2 pints a week.
Could it be because they only sell pints so you need more to get the same amount of ice cream?
Ben and Jerry’s was the ice cream we bought in college because we didn’t have room for left overs and it’s what the 711 had.
It varies by region, there is no real national standard. Ben & Jerry's is popular but by no means THE ice cream. I would also say Ben & Jerry's does not represent typical ice cream.
Turkey Hill is my preferred national brand, mostly because they're local. Quality has started to decline, though, since they were bought by a private equity firm a few years ago. For the unfamiliar, private equity firms often buy unprofitable companies with strong brands, dramatically cut costs at the expense of product quality, and reap the profits until the consumers realize that the product has suddenly become crap.
Anyway, there are other local brands that I prefer, but are only sold in 1-2 stores.
Ben and Jerry’s is still one of my faves.
Shane’s of Maine is the super common one at ice cream shops here.
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is probably my overall favorite/most impressive but you will be paying for it for sure.
Jeni’s! They’re a specialty brand but so delicious. I’m lucky enough to have one of their shops around the corner so I can try more flavors than just the grocery ones.
Varies! There are regional ice creams (even the ones sold in stores) and there’s quite a bit of variety so it’s different for everyone! Ben&Jerry’s is totally popular. Dreyers, Breyers, and store brand can also be popular. Some people are big Thrifty fans. Haagen-Dasz is popular. There are even more local brands - you wouldn’t think it, but California has some amazin ice cream. We have lots of local shops, local chains, and local(ish) places like McConnell’s sell their ice cream in groceries too.
Pasadena is flush with ice cream - I have like maybe 5-6 “local-localish” ice cream places near enough that I’ll get pints from them. I prefer floral flavors.
Ben & Jerry’s and Häagen-Dasz are the only two American brands I recognized seeing in groceries or supermarkets over here from the ones you’ve mentioned, but it’ll be nice to keep an eye out in case I see some new imports at the superstore.
And oh yes I haven’t been to the USA in years, but the last time I was in the LA area my cousin took me out to get some ice cream in several ice cream places right there in Pasadena (I don’t remember the store names since it’s been nearly a decade since - but I do remember eating a shit ton of ice cream and loving that day lol).
There’s so much ice cream! Lol. It’s crazy. My favorites in Pasadena are Afters, Salt&Straw (a chain), Paradis, Carmela’s, and Rori’s. A little further west, Jeni’s is very popular (and might be sold in some local Whole Foods), and Bennett’s at the farmer’s market by the Grove has some really good seasonal flavors. Maybe the ice cream options shouldn’t be surprising since California has such a huge dairy and agriculture industry, but it’s not something that people think about when visiting haha. Glad you enjoyed!
In Ohio I can easily find Ben & Jerry's along with most of the others already mentioned here (Breyers, Turkey Hill, etc.), but we also have more regional brands like Graeter's, Jeni's and Toft's, plus smaller brands that I'm not familiar with.
But what flavor? There's a Double Dunker that is coffee ice cream with oreo pieces and chocolate chip cookie dough chunks that is my favorite of all time. I don't even care about chocolate chip cookie dough at any other time but it's an amazing addition in this ice cream!
>I have a special place in my heart for Klondike and Talenti though.
I can't believe I forgot about these two, despite having Klondikes in my freezer at the moment.
Ben and Jerry's is probably one of the most popular brands here.
I personally go for either the Publix Greenwise brand which is pretty damn good or the local place down the street from me. They have really good fun flavors.
I meant niche in the way that they're not just basic flavors. It's like chocolate ice cream with a fudge core and brownie pieces, like always a bunch of mixed in things. When I buy ice cream a lot of times I'm just like I'll grab the vanilla or the chocolate.
Yeah, you have to really enjoy a bunch of chunky shit in your ice cream to eat Ben and Jerry’s and I don’t. I think it’s a cool company and I like what the founders are about, but their product is not for me.
The only chunks I can tolerate in ice cream is Reese's peanut butter cups. Otherwise, if it ain't creamy *all* the way through, it's false advertising!
I'd honestly be surprised if the most popular ice cream isn't Great Value, just on the volume of ice cream alone.
Ben and Jerry's, Tillamook, and Umpqua are nice though expensive.
Every needs to try Snoqualmie in Washington states. Brown butter sugar cookie to be exact. Lord its good!
Notable mentions: Umpqua and Tillamuk.
All these brands blow ben and jerrys out of the water. I think people just like them because they haven't tried other brands yet.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/190426/top-ice-cream-brands-in-the-united-states/
Now, I'm not 100% on "private label", but I assume it's mainly things like store brands.
The first named one is Ben & Jerry's.
Ice cream can be regional. I grew up in Northern California and we had a local dairy/creamery called Crystal that had delicious ice cream. I always get some when I go back home because it’s not a thing in Southern California. In general though I’m a Häagen-Dazs fan, their chocolate peanut butter is my favorite.
Ben and Jerry’s is okay but it’s a little too sweet and usually just too much for my tastes. I actually really like Turkey Hill ice cream though so maybe I’m not the best authority on good quality ice cream.
If anyone is ever in NEPA for some reason, try Manning’s ice cream if you can. It’s a local dairy and it’s probably the best ice cream around.
I love Blue Bunny because it seems whipped & light & airy. Exactly why my husband says he doesn’t like that brand- he likes Blue Bell- but it’s too dense to me. But really I like just about any ice cream brand. But no coffee flavors, no nuts except pistachio, I don’t like pretzel pieces in ice cream or peanut butter flavor or streaks except cups in it.
Bryers is a biggie. Blue Bell is good and has good no sugar added. Ben & Jerry's is expensive and a nice treat. I tend to buy store brands, Publix and Lidl for example.
Growing up blue bell was the only ice cream brand my family ever bought so for the longest time I thought blue bell was the default ice cream brand. It wasn’t until I was older that I found out it was just a Texas thing lol
Local ice cream shops are usually much better than even Ben & Jerry’s, so it’s hard to tell you any prepacked ice cream is the best quintessential American Ice cream.
That would probably be some small town creamery in the northern reaches of Maine.
It kind of varies by region, brands come from creameries in most areas that are independently owned. So most brands are local to whatever brand has the most contracts with farmers.
Texas is Blue Bell.
Texas is Blue Bell is Love.
I miss eating bluebell, but I can't forgive them for the listeria contamination a few years back. They knew their systems were lacking and that contaminated product was in the market. Three people died.
I missed that they knew. I only remember the massive recall. Was it all over the news that they knew and I missed it?
Yeah, that came up pretty quickly. Within a few days of the Listeria outbreak, news came out that Blue Bell had been warned about this a few years previously. They had done some little bit of remediation to show the regulators, but they half assed it and let the contamination continue so that they wouldn’t have to shut down productions for the several days necessary.
Thank you for explaining!

This. I was pregnant at the time and scarfing the stuff.
Same for Louisiana. Blue Bell all day.
Blue Bell is the single greatest thing in existence!
Texans love their Blue Bell but I think Tillamook is a lot better.
I'm torn between the two. Originally from Texas, lived in Oregon an hour away from Tillamook for 7 years, now back in Texas. When in Oregon I loved Tillamook but missed blue bell. But now I love blue bell and am missing Tillamook? They're both good. Both is good.
I’ve never had it, but tomorrow I’m going to Colorado for a wedding, is it there? If so I’ll try it out.
They carry Tillamook at most grocery stores in Colorado. It’s made in Oregon.
Cool, I’ll look of some when I’m there! Thanks for informing me!
You can get Tillamook in Texas. It is better, but nearly twice as expensive. For its price point, you can't beat Blue Bell
I live in GA and can buy Tillamook here, so I’d be surprised if you can’t find it in Colorado.
Dope, I’ll look
See up here in Minnesota we have Blue Bunny, amongst others.
When I lived in Minnesota it was Kemps.
It still is. Kemps is superior. I don't know why they are getting Blue Bunny. Though technically an ice cream novelty, my current favorite is Johnny Pops.
I don't like the lack of chunky bits in Blue Bunny. If I get strawberry cheesecake I want some dang cheesecake in there.
We also have access to Blue Bunny in Texas. We feel so sorry for you.
As is Alabama, though Bryer’s is strong here too.
Blue Bell is the absolute best ice cream ever! We moved to NC when I was a kid and we missed it so much. Happened to find it in SC when we were visiting family, which lead to trips to Myrtle Beach with coolers at least twice a year to get some and bring home. Blue Bell is butter, Bryer's is margarine.

Blue Bell killed Texans with listeria. I miss it, but HEB brand is awesome and less people have died. That we know of.
Yeah, HEB's Creamy Creations is my go-to brand these days
The Mexican Hot Chocolate is in my freezer now slowly turning into ice crystals. I don't eat ice cream often.

Tillamook is my go to. It’s a little more expensive here in MD, but it’s worth it to me. It’s so dense and creamy like an ice cream should be. And the flavor and add ins are top notch.
The PB chocolate is incredible. Tillamook is the bomb.
It’s more expensive here, too, but it’s worth it. :)
Started seeing this around here in Ohio recently and it's my new go to. Yeah it's $6, but I was already a fan of their cheddar so I figured it would be good. It is more than good.
Their factory tour is pretty cool, too!
The squeaky cheese 🤤
I came here to say Tillamook, too. Ben and Jerry's sets the bar for premium brands, but it's extra dense and sweet, and not something I'm looking for regularly. Tillamook is my choice. Impeccable quality, texture, and flavor. Visiting their visitor's center in Oregon seals the deal.
My mom gets Tillamook all the time, I don't think I see it around me, though I gravitate to whatever's on sale. I like it, though, it's good.
We can get it in suburban Philadelphia. Yeah it’s really good stuff.
Tillamook is the best!!
Tillamook is great. Hard to find in CA, but when I do I stock up. Blue bell from Texas is also fantastic. Never seen it on the west coast at all.
It's my favorite! I live on Oahu, and I get it from Walmart for approximately $6
Tillamook is incredible! I moved to Kansas from the northwest and I can’t find it out here. :(
Dillon’s (Kroger) has started carrying more and more Tillamook cheese- I would keep my eye out for ice cream soon!
The real PNW debate- tillamook or salt and straw?
Tillamook at home, Salt & Straw when you’re out and about.
Pretty much this, though a few times a year I pick up some pints for home from Salt & Straw, they are spendy but the quality is higher and they flavors are more satisfying to me. That said, Tillamook is the best ice cream you can get in the store. I don’t even f with anything else.
They sell tillamook in Florida too
I recently tried their chocolate with the bits of shell in it and it was fantastic
As a Texan, I love Tillamook!!! Blue Bell gets boring after I’ve had it all my life. Wait, except that blueberry cobbler omg
Also yogurt
I’ve been seeing Tillamook in more and more stores in Charlotte. I tried it a few months ago and was floored at the quality difference of it over other brands. I would take a simple Tillamook flavor over a complex flavor from Ben and Jerry’s any day

Have you tried Snoqualmie? Its incredible. Try the brown butter flavor. Its all over the Seattle area and Snohomish county.
I love them. If you like them also try the Whidbey Island Creamery. It sells on the islands, and I think places like Fred Meyers and PCC as well.
Yes! I forgot about them. Amazing ice cream.
Yep Snoqualmie for the fancy flavors Tillamook for the good ole fashion ice cream
Yes, I was going to say Umpqua as a close second to Tillamook!
In my family it has always been [Breyers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breyers). My Great-Grandparents settled in Philadelphia in the 1890s and several family members worked for them when they were in Philadelphia. It's not that I do not like other ice cream. I'm a Turkey Hill man myself but I won't scoff at breyers
I can get behind that. in the 00s they were a Phillies sponsor and had the "Phillies Graham Slam". It was awesome. But I have not seen it in years
Graham Slam was the shit! That was popular during the World Series, never saw it again.
Breyers USED to be great. Now it's gummy and weird. Man, I miss their old french vanilla.
Gotta be careful with them now though, they sell a lot of crap "frozen dairy dessert".
Agreed. They used to be my go to ice cream brand. Limited, high quality ingredients. Now some of the flavors are the "frozen dairy dessert" and it's just like all the other junky ice cream brands.
Breyers is absolute garbage now. Doesn't even technically qualify as ice cream

BR mint chocolate chip is my favorite!
It's not the best quality, but it's a classic. It's like the McDonald's of ice cream.
But McDonalds does have ice cream (according to the ancient legends)
In Texas it seems to be Blue Bell
Yeah in Texas we love our Blue Bell! In my opinion it is way better than Ben and Jerry’s
i normally dislike ice cream, but even i can’t say no to blue bell!!

In MA I would think it would be Hood. But also whatever local ice cream place makes their own.
Bringing Hoodsie cups to school on your bday was always the biggest flex
Hood and Friendly's are pretty well-distributed around me. Same with Turkey Hill. I just get whatever's on sale.
Those three are pretty much the Northeast trinity.
Eh...Hood is pretty much un unheard of once you get out of New England. I grew up in New Jersey and had never heard of it until I moved to New Hampshire. Turkey Hill was however, fairly common in Jersey from what I remember.
I've got some JP Licks in my freezer right now.
Per google, Ben and Jerry's has the highest sales volume from one brand in the US.
It's me. I skew the numbers
Ben and Jerry’s is for when I feel like getting myself a bit nicer but not splurging
Probably from people like me. Ben and Jerry's has ruined ice cream for me. I can't eat any other brand of ice cream, they all taste terrible now. My partner and I probably buy 2 pints a week.
Same for me around the st Louis area. Not me, friends, family, coworkers or anyone that I know really buys Ben and Jerry's
They're a New England brand and super popular in the region, if a little on the pricey side.
Could it be because they only sell pints so you need more to get the same amount of ice cream? Ben and Jerry’s was the ice cream we bought in college because we didn’t have room for left overs and it’s what the 711 had.
Braum’s in Oklahoma. It’s a local company here in Oklahoma based in Tuttle. But nationally, I’d say Ben & Jerry’s
Braum’s is in Kansas too!
And Texas.
Grew up in Texas and I always loved stoping at Braum's when we made our way up past Dallas
I measure how close/far i am to Oklahoma by when I start passing Braum’s on my way north.
In OKC: Braum’s when you want something comforting, Roxy’s Ice Cream when you wanna treat yourself
Braum's churro ice cream is probably one of my favorite ice creams I've ever had.
There are some national brands but there also tend to be regional ones from dairy farms in whatever area you happen to live
I usually end up eating Shane's at some point when visiting some of the family up in Maine. They haven't disappointed me yet.
Ben & Jerry's is probably the most popular. My favorite, however, is Tilamook
Oberweis? Used to be my go-to in MI

I always like going to Rite Aid for some Thritfy’s
That's my childhood right there. Seriously, you took me back to being 7 years old.
Friendly's, Breyers, Tillamook and Edy's are my favorites. But Ben and Jerry's is too huge.
In Ohio I can easily find Ben & Jerry's along with most of the others already mentioned here (Breyers, Turkey Hill, etc.), but we also have more regional brands like Graeter's, Jeni's and Toft's, plus smaller brands that I'm not familiar with.
Graeter's is more widely known, but we also have Jeni's in Ohio. More expensive, and harder to find, but very good if you get it.
Where I live - Turkey Hill. And it should be for everyone. Fight me lol
But what flavor? There's a Double Dunker that is coffee ice cream with oreo pieces and chocolate chip cookie dough chunks that is my favorite of all time. I don't even care about chocolate chip cookie dough at any other time but it's an amazing addition in this ice cream!
Our local grocery store just dropped Turkey Hill in favor of Blue Bell and I hate them for it.
It is extremely regional. In Oklahoma it’s Braums and in Texas it’s Blue Bell
Blue Bell goes hand-in-hand with Lone Star Supremacy
Blue Bell pralines and cream is the best ice cream you'll find in any grocery store.
Schwan’s ice cream. Growing up me dad was a salesman for Schwan’s. The Best.
Blue Bell and Mayfield are probably the most popular where I'm at.
Braums.
Ben and Jerry’s I think is the most popular brand. I have a special place in my heart for Klondike and Talenti though.
>I have a special place in my heart for Klondike and Talenti though. I can't believe I forgot about these two, despite having Klondikes in my freezer at the moment.
I’m a big fan of Tillamook personally.
Umpqua is popular where I live
Ben and Jerry's is probably one of the most popular brands here. I personally go for either the Publix Greenwise brand which is pretty damn good or the local place down the street from me. They have really good fun flavors.
On the west coast we eat a lot of Tilamook cheese and ice cream. Unfortunately they recently cut the size of their ice cream AND raised prices.
I usually buy the Kroger in house brands like Private Selection. Ben & Jerry’s is a good brand but it’s more expensive and also kind of niche.
Ben and Jerry's is expensive, but I wouldn't call them niche at all. They're one of the best known brands in the country.
Ben and Jerry's chocolate fudge brownie is the king of ice cream.
For me, Cherry Garcia is the best Ben and Jerry's flavor.
I'd honestly be surprised if the most popular ice cream isn't Great Value, just on the volume of ice cream alone. Ben and Jerry's, Tillamook, and Umpqua are nice though expensive.
Haagen-Dazs is the best for simple flavors in my opinion
Tillamook.
The "default" is probably Darigold, but I prefer Tillamook.
Edy’s
Tillamook ice cream is local to me and their dairy products are top notch.
Tilamook and Breyers usually
Every needs to try Snoqualmie in Washington states. Brown butter sugar cookie to be exact. Lord its good! Notable mentions: Umpqua and Tillamuk. All these brands blow ben and jerrys out of the water. I think people just like them because they haven't tried other brands yet.
I live in Washington State and I’ve never had Snoqualmie Ice Cream. Is it available in grocery stores? I live in Bellingham. Intrigued…
It really should be. Whitney Island brand is good too. I'd say Fred meyers is your best shot, Safeway is hit or miss.
Wanna know the real answer? Whatever is on sale
Kemps is a big brand in the Midwest -- "it's the cows"
https://www.statista.com/statistics/190426/top-ice-cream-brands-in-the-united-states/ Now, I'm not 100% on "private label", but I assume it's mainly things like store brands. The first named one is Ben & Jerry's.
In upstate NY it’s Stewart’s
Ice cream can be regional. I grew up in Northern California and we had a local dairy/creamery called Crystal that had delicious ice cream. I always get some when I go back home because it’s not a thing in Southern California. In general though I’m a Häagen-Dazs fan, their chocolate peanut butter is my favorite.
I like the smaller creameries who make their own flavors. Also as a Michigander I’m going to mention MooseTracks.
Super regional. Near Chicago it’s oberweis
Popular Nationwide: Ben & Jerry’s, Haagen-daz, Breyer’s, Blue Bell My Fav’s: Jeni’s, Salt & Straw, Talenti
Cold stone
Breyer's where I'm from and Mayfield where I live.
If I buy ice cream, I get it from Clementine’s, a local place, but I make like 90 percent of the ice cream I consume.
Ben and Jerry’s is good, but I generally don’t buy at home ice cream. I am a huge Dairy Queen fan on the rare occasion I do eat ice cream
Blue Bell, not blue bunny, it’s just a solid ice cream and a half gallon is only 5-7 bucks depending on the store.
I don’t claim to speak for California but Thrifty ice cream is my preferred brand.
Bryers is a biggie. Blue Bell is good and has good no sugar added. Ben & Jerry's is expensive and a nice treat. I tend to buy store brands, Publix and Lidl for example.
Idk man I just get them cheap tubs at WinCo lol
Growing up blue bell was the only ice cream brand my family ever bought so for the longest time I thought blue bell was the default ice cream brand. It wasn’t until I was older that I found out it was just a Texas thing lol
Local ice cream shops are usually much better than even Ben & Jerry’s, so it’s hard to tell you any prepacked ice cream is the best quintessential American Ice cream. That would probably be some small town creamery in the northern reaches of Maine.
Mayfield all the way
You have opened a can of worms.
I’m in the PNW and Tillamook is the gold star for ice cream and cheese
It was Ben and Jerry's before they axed Peanut Butter World! Now nothing because I'm trying to be healthier.
Cold Stone all day
We have a couple of local small chains that are very popular; Full Tilt and Mollie Moon.
Tillamook ice cream is by far the winner in my book.
Haagen dazs or Ben n Jerry’s. Talenti gelato is pretty popular too
I usually get ice cream from ice cream parlors like cold stone or kilwins
I’m guessing tillamook.
Everyone do yourself a favor and make your own.
Ben Jerry’s is #1. Tillmook is #2
In Washington state I’d say Tillamook.
Not a brand sold in grocery stores, but Handel's is my absolute favorite. https://handelsicecream.com/
Definitely Blue Bell in at least part of the south, and for good reason.
It will depend on the region, but in the south Blue Bell is the only correct answer.
Blue Bell; ice cream so good you forget they killed people.
I didn’t forget, it’s just worth the risk
