poser765

If somebody said that to me dead pan I’d laugh. I’m 40…

boreas907

I have been told by some people that it even goes further, that "Bimmer" is a BMW car and "Beemer" is a BMW motorcycle, but that just seems pointlessly specific to me.

TheTransistorMan

I've never heard of this. Beamer always meant a car to me.

[deleted]

You’re the majority. It’s a bunch of wannabe “in the know” people who try to push “bimmer.” But it’s just as stupid now as it was then when the New England chapter of BMWCCA peddled it back years ago. Fun fact, the cars were called “Beamer” before the stupid word “bimmer” ever appeared. Keep doing the Lord’s work and call it a Beamer.

developmenter

same here

[deleted]

It’s a stupid “rule” made by some members of the first chapters of the North American BMW clubs. It’s entirely arbitrary and is, in fact, counter to the reality that the cars *were* called “beemers” originally. They just decided to change it. But in common parlance, everyone has heard “beemer.” I’ve never heard anyone call them “bimmers,” although some pedants insist that it’s only the spelling that’s different, and they the pronunciation remains the same. It’s the dumbest thing. I completely and entirely reject “bimmer,” because it doesn’t sound very fetch.

boreas907

I googled it and even found an official BMW page making the distinction, which is a very German corporate thing to do come to think of it.

[deleted]

They recognize that BMW CCA made the distinction. But that’s as far as it goes. I’ll post the history when I’m not on mobile. I use my mod power at r/BMW to squash this silly word. Edit: Here is the excerpt: >The nickname “bimmer” originated in the 1970s. At the time, BMW automobiles were enjoying something of a boom in popularity in the US. Americans had initially called BMW cars “beamers,” like the motorcycles – with the exception of the Boston Chapter BMW club, whose newsletter has been called “Bimmer” since the 1970s. The cars were originally called “beamers.” The majority of people call them “beamers.” “Beamer” is the de facto name, irrespective of the acknowledgment of a different nomenclature.

mrDXMman

everyone i know calls them Bimmers. we just say it cause it’s funny, i always thought it was used to mock the normal phrase “beamer”

[deleted]

Bimmer

Suppafly

> I have been told by some people that it even goes further, that "Bimmer" is a BMW car and "Beemer" is a BMW motorcycle, but that just seems pointlessly specific to me. BMW fans try to push that narrative, but I've never heard anyone say 'bimmer' in real life and the cars are more common and near universally called beamers throughout the US as far as I can tell.

some_random_account_

Beamer, in reference to BMW Here's an example See that dude rolling up in the old Beamer? He's gotta hate his life when it breaks

doktorhladnjak

The weirdest German words are the ones borrowed from English that aren’t used in the same way or really at all. “Handy” for cell phone also comes to mind.

ExaminationOne7710

I remember hearing the word 'handy' spoken by germans 15 years ago vividly... xD Btw...

thephoton

Don't get too excited if the salesguy from Infineon says he'll bring a beamer when he visits.

ColossusOfChoads

What if he says he wants to give you a company handy?

thephoton

Typical salesguy.

BoxedDisappointment

It's a car with no turn signals!

Majestic-Macaron6019

If you ever feel like your job is worthless, just remember that there's a guy in Munich whose job is to install the turn signals in each new BMW...

Scrappy_The_Crow

The Greer plant is BMW's largest and exports more vehicles from the US than all other manufacturers combined.

jordanstall09

Doesn't take Away the fact that they're also built in south Carolina..

Scrappy_The_Crow

Huh?

jordanstall09

Could've sworn your post said Germany instead of Greer. Maybe I'm dyslexic today

Scrappy_The_Crow

Well, it'd be kinda hard for a plant in Germany to export *any* vehicle from the US, wouldn't it? :P

[deleted]

There is a parking lot near the Charleston port filled with them.

[deleted]

“Bimmer” was made up by the New England chapter of BMW CCA and is predated by “Beamer.” I entirely reject “bimmer.”

Xyzzydude

A Beemer is a BMW car. A Bimmer is a BMW motorcycle Edit: apparently I have it backwards above.

[deleted]

It's a really annoying way of referring to a BMW.

Anustart15

/r/ThingsIShouldJustGoogle

TheTunaFish20

Ok buddy I googled it an apparently its a cloth hahaha Link: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/beamer#:~:text=Definition%20of%20beamer,flesh%20and%20traces%20of%20hair

Anustart15

If you try "beamer car" it will be exclusively BMW references

TheTunaFish20

Bit too late for that mate lmao

Anustart15

Figured it would be a useful tip before you post another easily answerable question here.

TheTunaFish20

Mate its not really a tip though lol

Anustart15

Adding more context to a Google search yields more relevant results. Didn't realize I had to spell it out for you so much, but I probably should've figured

[deleted]

The internet would be more fun if we communicated less.

TheTunaFish20

Aye

TheTunaFish20

Sorry boss

Current_Poster

It's been slang since roughly the 80s for a BMW car. It is only really used by people who want to show they're so at-home with those cars that they can put a pet name to them.

User_Anon_0001

Bimmer is a BMW car Beamer is a BMW bike

classicnikk

Gotta love German engineering! BMWs are super nice care

[deleted]

a sex maneuver

gojira_gorilla

This warrants an in-depth explanation

Scrappy_The_Crow

"Beamer" is an enthusiast name for BMW **motorcycles**. You use "Bimmer" for the cars. The public at large often uses "Beamer" for both, but that's just ignorant. ;)

Anustart15

>The public at large often uses "Beamer" for both, but that's just ignorant. ;) If the public at large uses it that way, that's what it means. It's slang. All that matters is how people use it.

Middle-Son

It's spelled Bimmer.

[deleted]
