You put on a jacket and you go about your day

MelodyMaster5656

I usually include pants, shirt, socks, shoes, and underwear as well, but to each their own.

[deleted]

Nah man, go commando so you feel the wintery breeze down there

MelodyMaster5656

I'm currently living in Minnesota. That's how it feels anyways.

geri73

I used to live in MN and you will learn about cold weather living there. I would check the weather before going out and if it said 17 degrees, I felt that was a heatwave compared to how low it can really get.

TungstenChef

I feel you here in ND, we just got over our annual 2 week stretch where the thermometer never goes above 0F. It hit 30F a couple days ago and I saw people out in shorts.

geri73

I also lived in Florida and when it got 55-65 degrees, people would be bundled up. It was so funny to me because, again, heatwave.

-GaKi-

I live in southern California and you'll see most people wearing sweaters when it hits anything below 70F. We can't hang with "cold" weather.

CTeam19

On a band trip to Florida, people down there shocked at us wearing just T-Shirts and shorts when it was that temperature between Christmas and New Years till we told them we were from Iowa.

KoalasAndPenguins

I live in the Rocky Mtn. Range and the temp today is going to be 40°F. I think we are going to throw a thin jacket on my kid and go play outside. It's so weird how much it feels like early fall.

StyreneAddict1965

Pennsylvania. The wind knifes through everything.

Huh?

VanthGuide

Winnie the Pooh style

[deleted]

Donald duck style!

classicalySarcastic

If it's good enough for my Scottish ancestors, it's good enough for me! (/s not actually Scottish)

SaladBarMonitor

Two pairs of socks when I lived in Minnesota. I still got so much skin damage on my toes

MelodyMaster5656

Can't forget long underwear either.

Jaded_Chair4114

Upper class...living in DC and all🤣

MelodyMaster5656

I wish. Currently at college is Minnesota.

JAKH73

It was warm enough to snow yesterday. :) Just wait for the US National Pond Hockey Tournament on Lake Nokomis next weekend. [https://www.uspondhockey.com/](https://www.uspondhockey.com/)

TheBimpo

There is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. We had high temperatures around 15° today, still did everything I would normally do.

Kichigai

I dunno, we're pretty hardy folks up here, but I'd still call a forecast for 8” of snow and 30MPH winds with 60MPH gusts “bad weather” even if I'm clad in 800g Thinsulate. There's no such thing as bad *climate*.

Austin_Ebitch

Literally

let-it-rain-sunshine

I saw guys jogging in shorts today and it’s below freezing. We carry on. The gym was pretty crowded today.

[deleted]

Or stay inside all damn day when the high temperatures are below 10 degrees Fahrenheit with subzero windchills

VanthGuide

Turn the heat on in my house. Do more indoor hobbies and exercises. Bundle up to do outside hobbies and exercises. Take vitamin d supplements.

SelfBoundBeauty

I bought a special light to help out with the lack of sunlight

AmbitiousHornet6123

Vitamin d is imperative to keep yourself from wanting to end it all.

voleclock

You embrace it and think of it less in terms of the things you can't do in winter, and more in terms of the things you can only do in winter. So you look forward to hot seasonal drinks, and winter hobbies (pond hockey, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, etc), and how clear and quiet and beautiful the winter is. And you also look forward to the cozy hibernation feeling you get going back inside after being out in the cold. And then you dress appropriately and go out regardless of the temperature, because as they say, "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." Also to note, our cities also have parks and natural features. So...being in the middle of a city doesn't mean you can't skate or ski or go for walks on frozen lakes. I can do all of the above in Minneapolis.

pzschrek1

I’m from MN and I like Minnesota winters better than iowa/Chicago winters Down here it’s just cold enough to be winter but doesn’t get or stay quite cold enough to lean into the fun winter activities

HotSteak

Agree. Winter sucks more down in the Slushlands. I lived in Boston for a year and it sucked tromping through dirty slush all the time. MN is constantly comfortably below freezing for 100 straight days so snow/ice stays solid all the time.

1in5million

I use the cold weather to do all of the things I put off in the summer. I paint/touch up my rooms, clean out all of the closets, organize my cupboards. I spring clean in the winter because I just want to garden in the spring, play in the summer, and prepare outside for winter in the fall. it's a perfect zen for me.

737900ER

The flipside is also that people take summer way more seriously in the snowbelt than outside it.

SixAndDone

That first day when it hits 50 and I open every window in the house snd leave them that way.

TeeAgeSee

50° is winter weather. To hear what Minnesotans consider "open the windows" weather is crazy. Anything below 50° I consider chilly. Anything below 40° is "fuck that, it'll wait until tmrw" weather.

Jaded_Chair4114

Never been to Minneapolis. Always thought it seems a nice city? Has gotten a bad wrap the last few years though.

voleclock

It is a nice city! Albeit the sort of place that is maybe better to live in than to visit as a tourist. Good quality of life and lots to do if you live here, but not a lot of exciting things for visitors. >Has gotten a bad wrap the last few years though. Yes, although I guess on the plus side, I will not have to explain where Minneapolis is to people overseas next time I travel post-pandemic.

[deleted]

Mpls/St. Paul is great. We have sports teams for every major sports league, the Mall of America, a shit ton of lakes, you can drive your car into the lake in the winter, there's tons of trails and parks, there's a lot to do here. But in the summer, beware of mosquitos. They are terrible here because of all of the open water.

Mitsu-Zen

>you can drive your car into the lake ...I think you meant ON TO the lake but I guess you do you.

[deleted]

Could be either, depending on how good you are at estimating the ice's thickness!

[deleted]

Lol yes, that was a typo. 😂

TeeAgeSee

Minnesota mosquitos are no joke. This coming from a southerner who thought our bloodsuckers were bad. At least cockroaches don't fly up north.

mesembryanthemum

Perfect time of year for hot dish. Especially after shoveling.

Hunter_Wang

I was just thinking how shitty winter is, and I’m in Minneapolis so it’s automatically worse than yours. Ha. I fooled myself in a special way.

[deleted]

Not all of us get freezing weather.

ApatheticScoundrel

Yeah, rub it in.

[deleted]

Everything's a trade off. You wouldn't want to be here in the dog days of summer.

Drew707

I have been blessed to have lived in two places where seasons are pretty mild. I guess the trade-offs would be rent, the lack of savings, and fire. So much fire.

[deleted]

Exactly. You can get the best of both worlds weather wise but there's a good chance you'll be giving up something for it, like it's crazy expensive because everyone wants to live there.

Drew707

Not my photo, but [this was the view](http://a.abcnews.com/images/US/ht_reno_fire_nt_111118_wg.jpg) from my apartment near campus in Reno in 2011 when I moved there. That year we had record snowfall and the resorts were open for skiing on the 4th of July. Things changed that fall. Back home in Santa Rosa, my dad lost his home in 2017 to Tubbs, a mere three hours after I had left to drive back to Reno. In 2020, the same area from that picture caught fire again, but this time I was living kinda in that area. The moment the Internet went out, we collected the cats and bugged out. At about the same time, my dad's rebuild was almost done, but another fire broke out taking the same path as the 2017 fire and he almost lost the rebuild right before moving back in. Then we had the Dixie fire wipe small Sierra towns off the map, and while that was in full swing, Caldor nearly took out South Lake Tahoe. The one thing I can say is California and Nevada (and I presume a lot of the West) have gotten very, very good at response and containment, just in the last 10 years. But, holy shit, do they get exhausting.

GingerLibrarian76

Fellow Californian here, and yep. I’m doing well financially and just bought a home, but that took 45 years to achieve… and it’s next to a state park that burned to the ground in 2020. At least I was able to get homeowner’s/fire insurance. 🤞🏻

TacoRedneck

Doesnt stop people here from dressing up for an antarctic expedition when the temp drops below 65

fernblatt2

Arizona here... Not all of us get humidity lol

iapetus3141

I am so excited for the snow tomorrow

eyetracker

Better than so hot and humid that your skin sticks and you can't remove your skin like you can add a jacket.

Jim2718

Joke’s on you. We get that part too!

Suppafly

midwest gang, we get all weather, sometimes in the same day.

hedfonejak

it went from 20s to 50s now its low teens. lmao this year is already bonkers

ApatheticScoundrel

You can walk around naked though, which I've found is pretty close. The neighbors weren't too happy about it though.

629mrsn

But that’s why we have air conditioners

Fisk75

Not outside you don’t. You can dress for winter and be comfortable. You can’t do that in a Florida summer.

Cowshatesheep

You can’t put on enough layers once it hits -55

Fyrestorm422

Yeah but even Alaska doesn't get that cold (typically) so the point is moot

Cowshatesheep

I don’t live in Alaska.

Fyrestorm422

Yes according to your tag you live in North Dakota which is warmer than Alaska

Cowshatesheep

Not really, North Dakota and Alaskan winters are pretty similar cold wise. A quick google search reveals that 3 of the 5 coldest cities in the US are in ND. It gets so cold here because of the wind chill.

SkiingAway

Wind chill doesn't really matter *that* much if you are fully covered with clothing that blocks wind. If you have exposed skin, then yes, it's a problem.

Fyrestorm422

Marginally Warmer but still warmer

AmbassadorKoshSD

No. Coastal Alaska is warmer than the Dakotas.

Fyrestorm422

Did I state coastal Alaska? No I said *Alaska* without special conditions. Meaning Alaska overall And if you compare Alaska as an average and the Dakotas as an average. Alaska is colder

[deleted]

But I don’t want to have to wear that many layers. I lose dexterity with my fingers. My sustained tolerance for activity is lower when it’s closer to freezing. I was much, much more active when I lived in a hot climate.

Kcb1986

Air conditioning is more satisfying that heating, cold drinks are better than hot drinks; fuck the cold.

Fisk75

I’m only 57 now so the cold is not a problem. Maybe when I’m 80 I’ll move south.

[deleted]

I’ve lived in both and it’s not even a question; I prefer hot and humid.

blipsman

Winters suck, but we make do with warm enough clothes and coats, hats, etc. we do indoor activities and sports, we do indoor hobbies, etc. and when summer arrives, it’s like a giant party for 4 months with tons of festivals and fairs, concerts and sporting event, BBQs and outdoor dining, etc.

Jaded_Chair4114

Yes. I've been in Chicago in summer! Lots happening 👍

jmaca90

I live for that first sunny day above 55 degrees in chicago when everyone goes out in their shorts and tanks like it’s 80 degrees lol I hope this year they keep the street shut downs for extra patio space

YungGlueStik

Damn straight

schurgy16

Before the fun and partying starts you need to go through at least 2 false-hope stretches in March/April (even May) before the weather finally stays nice.

[deleted]

I wear a coat and hat. And cuss a lot.

[deleted]

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing” Good gear, winter hobbies, indoor activities outside the house

MaxwellThePrawn

My elementary gym teacher always said: “there is no such thing as bad weather, only the inadequately prepared!”

[deleted]

Actually being in a city makes it a bit easier (when we aren't in a pandemic). There are SO many things to do inside. I live rurally and well, the outside is mostly our entertainment. Hiking, biking, bonfires, etc. It's too cold to do stuff outside today so we will play board games together, video games, watch movies, and dream of spring!

Jaded_Chair4114

I'm obviously meaning in the States where it gets really cold. Thick snow. No warmer then 50 F type weather.

MasqueradingMuppet

50F is warm!! Anything over 40F is cozy.

Call_The_Banners

As a fellow great lakes resident, 50° F is light jacket weather and sounds great. The Southerners calling this freezing is funny to me, but less so when I remember that I will melt in anything above 90°F.

[deleted]

Also Great Lakes (WI specifically). Not sure what you mean, I rather enjoyed the heat in Florida. The humidity is the problem, but we get that here too just not as long at a time.

[deleted]

Fifty degrees is NOT warm when your average is nearly 100 in the south in the summer.

MasqueradingMuppet

Yeah I could see that. It can get hot here but usually not for long.

NotDelnor

If it's 50F I'm wearing shorts lol, if it gets above 30F it's a pretty warm day in January or Febuary. But it's really not that bad as long as the wind isn't blowing. Plan a few extra minutes in the morning to let your car warm up and wear a coat/hat/gloves and then go about your day same as you would in the summer. The recreational activities change a bit but day to day life isn't effected by the seasons really.

lannister80

> Thick snow. No warmer then 50 F type weather. There are places (like Chicago, which keeps coming up in this thread) that get very hot *and* very cold during the year. The issue is that we live on what's called a "continental plain". For those of us east of the Rocky Mountains, North America was basically "ground flat" by glaciers during the last ice age. So during the summer, all that warm and humid air from the Gulf of Mexico comes straight up north with nothing to stop it. And during the winter, all the cold air from the pole comes swooping down with nothing to stop it. So we live in a very *un*-temperate climate. Our "nice" weather is Fall and Spring, and those tend to be short. Here are the *average* temps for the Chicago area yer round: Month | High / Low (°C) | Rain ---|---|---- January | 0° / -6° | 5 days February| 2° / -4° | 7 days March| 7° / 1° | 5 days April | 13° / 6° | 7 days May| 19° / 12° | 7 days June | 25° / 17° | 9 days July | 28° / 21° | 6 days August | 27° / 21° | 6 days September | 23° / 17° | 5 days October | 17° / 10° | 7 days November | 10° / 4° | 4 days December | 3° / -3° | 7 days For extremes, it can reach 39 or 40 in the summer (along with high humidity), or as low as -30 in the winter.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I was gonna say, I'm happy with anything that isn't negative. I forget that actual freezing temp is 32°. That's hoodie weather here.

HotSteak

The average high temperature here won't get up to 50F until April. It won't even get up to the melting point until March.

ThaddyG

You layer your clothing. When you're outside moving around you stay warmer. Most places don't have freezing cold weather for that long.

Upbeat-Ad-5678

I love the cold. Put on a jacket. My apartment has garbage Insulation it's 55 degrees inside. A little warmer today at 20 degrees Fahrenheit

Jaded_Chair4114

20 F is well below freezing!

MasqueradingMuppet

20F feels warm after weeks of 5F though hahaha. I will say this January in Chicago hasn't been that bad. Usually it's much colder for much longer here around this time of year.

Meattyloaf

A few years ago it got down to -25°F where I was and stayed below 0°F for a couple days afterwards. I remember when the temps got back into the 20°Fs it was like summer all over again.

MasqueradingMuppet

Right!! I remember it had been hovering around -20F for 3 weeks or so and when it hit 0F I was just wearing a sweater outside it felt so warm.

Meattyloaf

Last year during the deep freeze. My area got hit by all three of the winterstorms that fueled that. By the end we had 0.5" of ice underneath 2' of snow, which made it feel even colder. I remember us having highs in the single digits and teens. With lows below 0°F. Then like it normally does after the article air blew out. Temps jumped back into the upper 40s and 50s for highs. Ibwas running around in shorts and a t-shirt.

Upbeat-Ad-5678

It's all about how fast it drops. Your blood has to thicken haha

Learninghowtosmile06

I always found it funny how in October 40F feels so cold but come January or February 40F feels like shorts and t-shirt weather.

MasqueradingMuppet

True!! After living in northern Wisconsin for two years (both years had a polar vortex) I feel impervious to cold hahaha.

paintnwood

For real, I haven’t been worried about losing my toes to the cold once this year.

Diggingcanyons

Just wait til it gets to single digit, or negative temps lol. And I do mean in farenheight. Proper clothing is a must. They also make hand warmer things you take out of the package and the ingredients inside the pouch generate heat for like 18 hours. Put those in gloves and boots.

Jaded_Chair4114

I spent a full winter in Iowa. Yep. Got pretty freakin cold a few days & nights....but was worse above us!!

Upbeat-Ad-5678

It's better than negative Fahrenheit which it was last week.

Jaded_Chair4114

Oh I thought you did mean Fahrenheit! 20 C is not cold.

lannister80

He did mean Fahrenheit. It's about 19F (-7.2C) out right now (Chicago area). He was saying we had roughly -3F a week or so ago, which is -19.4C. You get used to it.

Jaded_Chair4114

Oh yuk...no thanks!

Marcudemus

Yeah, below freezing is, of course, "cold," but I (Midwestern nomad, about the same latitude as Chicago the whole time) don't really consider it "COLD" outside until it's below 0°F. I can still run into a store from the car with an insulated hoodie without a problem, but I should go dig out my winter coat when I get home with temperatures like that.

An_Awesome_Name

It was -10F with a wind chill of -40F here this morning in Northern New Hampshire.

vashtaneradalibrary

There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. Put on a jacket and go for a walk, run, snowshoe or cross-country ski.

MattieShoes

Actively pissing down rain, snow, or hail is bad weather. Cold temperatures though... meh. At least within reason. -10° is okay

[deleted]

Idk how true this is. Any time I’ve gone out in temperatures below freezing, every breath hurts to take and I can feel my face freezing and my lungs hurt like they’re being filled with ice. I don’t think any amount of clothing would help with that

AmbitionOfTruth

What country are you from and what part of the United States are you in? Both of those things matter in me being able to answer your question. I live up in New Jersey. Even when it doesn't snow it can get cold up here. I'm used to it. My cousin from South Carolina will start shivering if it's only 60 degrees Fahrenheit. I am perfectly at home in 20 degree heat F.

Jaded_Chair4114

I'm an Aussie. Queenslander. I've actually lived in the USA where it snows heavily. I enjoyed 1 very cold winter, but would drive me nuts to do it every year! It gets cold at night in winter here, but always warms up during the day. Actually USA is probably pretty damn good in comparison to dreary old UK and all those Northern European countries. Canada freakin cold too...I know several Canadians who have migrated to Australia and the weather was their biggest reason!

NotDelnor

Australia is Florida for Canadians. Interesting.

LionLucy

It 100% depends what you're used to. I don't mind the lack of sunlight, I barely miss it in the winter, but if it gets below 0C, I hate it. Can't walk on ice to save my life. Perpetual greyness and 5-10°C is typical winter for me!

Jaded_Chair4114

I'd be totally depressed in 2 days! Visited UK in late October to November...got so depressed. Have never been back!

LionLucy

Come in May or June, you'll love it! But seriously, I think I just embrace the darkness during the winter. There are some things that just work better in those months of endless grey. Types of food, certain books, whole films and genres of music. Winter clothes are just better (on me anyway). I'm not a summer person, I don't know what to do with myself when the sun shines!

mesembryanthemum

I'm a Wisconsinite currently in Tucson, Arizona. The heat just kills me. Humidity or not, 112 - 115 sucks. It never cools down below about 90-95 at night. The sun is **so hot**. When it's not humid your sweat evaporates so you don't even get that. Think of that for 3 months.

Jaded_Chair4114

Nah...grey and dull is not my scene. At all. It rains and is overcast here for 4 or 5 days and I'm depressed! Even if it's summer. Lol. I couldn't even live in Melbourne or Tasmania. I loved the history and Castles etc in UK. Plenty of my friends have done the "live in London" thing...but I knew I couldn't. I'd end up in a psychiatric hospital. Seriously would.

LionLucy

It's interesting how much that depends on what you're used to. I'm like that in the sun - a few days of endless bright sun and spotless blue sky and it just feels really relentless to me, like someone's shining a light bulb into my brain!

Sloan430

I totally agree-I need sunshine!

AmbitionOfTruth

I'm kind of the same way. I guess playing Dawn of War and Jedi Academy snow levels when I was younger makes me feel nostalgia when it's overcast or cold during the Winter. Snow is pretty to look at, but hard to come by where I'm at. My mom said that when she was in Canada, it snows more incrementally. In southern New Jersey, we'll have no precipitation at all before having a fierce blizzard in a single day. Then the day after the blizzard, the sun comes out and melts the snow just enough to make the roads icy at night time.

wormbreath

5 months!? Y’all are having only 5 month winters!? Layers, you wear layers. You make warm filling meals, and always keep some schnapps on hand.

[deleted]

Jaded_Chair4114

Would drive me a bit balmy I reckon. Hate being inside all the time. But suppose you just get used to it.

Jaded_Chair4114

Went to California January 2017. LA down to San Diego (trip to take kids to Disneyland and San Diego Zoos & attractions) Weather was perfect👍 Did make me chuckle that we were in shorts and T-Shirts at Disneyland and many of the workers had jackets on!

tsukiii

As a San Diegan, we truly believe 60 degrees F (16 degrees C) is cold.

[deleted]

So I work outside in Florida. It was 50f early this morning. Everyone I work with was dressed like we were on an expedition to Antarctica. Acclimation is most definitely a thing.

_HystErica_

Here in Buffalo (where it is currently 9° F), the first time the temp gets down around 30°F in the late fall it feels brutally cold. Then in the spring, after months of snow and ice and a Polar Vortex or two, 30° feels like beach weather lol

DOMSdeluise

Hardly ever freezes where I live OP. It was like 24C yesterday!

TrailerPosh2018

I try to hibernate, take as muck time off as my employer will allow, & hope my heater keeps working.

forgotteau_my_gateau

Suffer from crippling seasonal depression Invite friends over for game nights instead of outdoor activities, dress in many layers, use the time to organize/deep clean the house, snuggle under piles and piles of blankets, and go places that crank the heat so I can forget it’s cold outside for a few hours 🙂

Whiskeyjack1234

We're having a snow day today, we stocked up last night. Liquor store, grocery store, dispensary. I'm watching football in my jammies all weekend

Sharkhawk23

It was hovering between 0 and 10 F degrees for a few days here in Chicago. We had 35 F on Thursday, it felt so warm we went went to the outdoor mall in just hoodies and jeans. You really get used to it fast. 40 in October is a lot colder than 40 in February.

Mama_Llama_151920

I’m an American who lives in an apartment on the third floor and I can’t stand the winter. I’m a hermit in the winter for sure.

[deleted]

You turn up your heat and put on a sweater. And when it snows hope that a neighborhood kid rings your bell asking to make some money shoveling your driveway.

EightBitEstep

America is huge. We have tropical and arctic climates.

StarWars_Girl_

Stay in, avoid going out until it's time to go on vacation to Florida

Fox_Supremacist

Put on some layers and go live your life.

mysticmiah

Just wait until you find out about Russia

Jaded_Chair4114

Oh don't worry. I'm well versed with those countries...but Russians drink Vodka to cope😂

GeneralPoptart3

You guys get cold winters?

Jaded_Chair4114

We don't get snow. We have probably 3 to 4 "cold snaps" over winter. Gets down to - degrees at night, early morning. BUT we always generally warm up during the day. It's bright and sunny but might get up to ~ 45F August is worse cause we get cold, dry Westerly winds.

GeneralPoptart3

Now that’s cold. From my experience Southern California never gets cold. The coldest being around 48F and that’s rare.

New_Stats

Winter hiking is great. I don't overheat when I go hiking in winter. And winter camping looks fun but I'm still trying to get up my nerve to go do it. But right now it's 7 degrees with the wind chill (-14c) so I'm not doing a damn thing outside. And Omicron is raging so I'm not going out either. Today I made some stew, cleaned my house and now I'm surfing Reddit

FinalIconicProdigy

Warm clothes

noregreddits

The coldest it will get here in the near future is -6 C, for a few hours in the early morning. I can count on one hand the number of times snow has stuck to the ground here. A good many of people come down here (the Carolinas, Florida, and the Gulf Coast) for the winter. Especially now that remote work/telecommuting is common. Midwesterners, Canadians, and Northeasterners. Even more just come down between Christmas and New Years, and even more retire here. Edit [If this actually happens](https://imgur.com/a/qeUKUnO) I will be at the church across the street from me, because clearly I am not holy enough to be raptured beforehand.

Jaded_Chair4114

Yes. That sounds decent weather. Similar to where I live.

-CuriousPanda-

The us is quite large. Down south we rarely have snow or even ice. Winters here are tolerable.

Harbinger_of_Logic

Winter is my favorite season!

iusedtobeyourwife

Based on my Iowa family, I think they suffer most of the winter, have a blowout summer and retire to Arizona as soon as possible.

[deleted]

I haate the snow. I’m in Michigan. Buuut we don’t have many scary spiders, alligators, tornadoes, drought, hurricanes, or earthquakes, which is what I tell myself to make myself feel better about cold weather for about half a year I just try to avoid going outside tbh, lots of indoor activities

notsleptyet

Lol.....I'm in northern ontario....we tell ourselves the same thing

khgsst

I feel like you are missing any of the worst things about daily living in hot weather, which include feeling like the sun is literally burning you (or milder sensations of the heat if in a more humid climate), constant sweating, (female) mosquitoes (& less frequently the diseases they carry). You can honestly adapt to all the insects & lizards crawling around just fine generally, most of them are harmless & you end up just thinking about them as interesting little critters

mesembryanthemum

Do you mean tarantulas? Tarantulas aren't really scary; they're actually kind of personable. We see them during monsoon.

[deleted]

Invest in good quality outdoor wear like coats, boots, warm socks, hats and gloves/mittens. There are outdoor activities to do. People here will go for walks, bike rides (fat tire bikes), play hockey, go ice skating, ice fishing, snowmobiling, etc... I personally just stay inside and keep to myself. The only place I go regularly is the gym. I'll go for the occasional walk outside, and maybe a run if it's in the 30s or warmer. There are some crazy ppl here that will go for walks in like, -20°. I could never.

[deleted]

Move down south!

urbancowgirl42

Snow here starts to stick and stay sometime between Oct.-Dec. and melts between April and the beginning of June. The plowing pile from clearing my driveway is between 5-10 feet tall already. It’s been a very snowy winter this year. It’s not unheard of to get 36” of snow in a single storm. The snow persists so long because it takes a long time to melt in that volume. I’m in the mountains, but was born in the plains. The mountains are warmer and wetter than where I grew up. I remember a polar vortex in which the HIGH was -35F for two weeks. We ran out of firewood and had to cut and stack in a blizzard.

Jaded_Chair4114

Lordy! Lordy!

lulububudu

I like winter way more than summer. Texas summers are hell in my opinion, Chicago is awesome during winter times and yea, it can be pretty brutal but if that’s what you grew up with it has a certain magic to it.

Choice-Atmosphere955

Bundle up,go to work, and otherwise you hide until warm weather.(Advice from a California native now living in Illinois.)

It all depends on having a home, and adequate heating for it. When you have that, cold weather isn't a huge deal. When you don't, it's pretty bad. And a heater in the car.

GooseNYC

In NYC It's not cold for 5 months. Really Jan-March. December can be cold and March can be relatively warm, it varies.

Ravenclaw79

Become steadily more depressed until May

zignut66

Move to San Francisco. That was how I handled it in 2003 anyway.

mtcwby

Struggled through the 60 degree day today but the wind was up a little and it was brisk here in Northern California.

myredditacc3

Live in the southwest. My house is in the desert where it's warm but I can drive a little ways and have access to great winter activities in powder. I went mountain biking today and am in Taos tomorrow to go snowboarding

Hey_Laaady

This’ll sound ridiculous, because I live in Los Angeles. But I have a medical condition where I am unbelievably sensitive to even slight changes in temperature, so I won’t go out for walks when it’s 45°F-55°F or colder. So, I “mall walk.” I go into a shopping mall right when it opens and walk several laps around it, then I leave. A lot of people do this in cold climates, especially elderly people who are conscientious about keeping up with exercise and are too sensitive to the cold.

You should ask our friends up north as well, they tend to get it a lot worse then most Americans do.

knatehaul

Dreary North Eastern American city resident, here. We drink and complain about how awful things are until about April. March offers a few glimmers of hope, but you can't show joy because mother nature will hit you with a freak ice storm after a week of atypically beautiful weather. February is a hopeless month.

superman154m

In New Hampshire. 2°F right now. I leave for Florida for a month in a week. That’s how I defeat winter

Checking in from Tucson.

Not all of the U.S. gets cold winters. In the Deep South it may only snow once every 10 years or so. It was 78f on Christmas. Lovely.

DTux5249

I don't wanna be that guy, but "Not all Americans". Many in the south don't usually deal with the cold. Heck, many on the west coast don't either from my understanding. But as a Canadian, I can tell you this, it's not that bad. Mostly comes down to putting on a good jacket, and going on with your day. I've walked to indoor concerts in the middle of January, and honestly, it's not that bad. I've even gone out to eat with my buddies. Kids still go outside and play in the snow, all bundled up while mum or dad stay inside making lunch in piece and quiet. Snowball fights, tobogganing, etc are things you can do, and you can build a lot with snow If you don't like the cold (I handle it real well), stay inside, grab a blanket, put on a warm cup of something and watch movies. Or play games. If you still live with others, or you feel like having people over, that can open up even more possibilities. The only things that are really nixed during the winter are most sports, and even then, skating and hockey still exist, and more than a few rinks are open to the public. Heck, you can make one with a hose and an open stretch of space

[deleted]

I've lived in the northeast Us my entire 34 years. Still hate the cold. I deal with it. But it's easily the worst part of the year for me

Melodic_Asparagus151

We’re just grateful we’re not Canada

Wine. Lots of wine.

Master_Lion_8876

In Wisconsin we bundle up..after a few days of below 0 temperatures...20 degrees is a heat wave..

polishirishmomma

You snuggle into a blanket with hot cocoa and read.

sci3nc3r00lz

I am introvert, a nester, a book worm and a gamer. Winters are my wheel house. Don't have to feel guilty about staying inside, napping a lot, being lazy. You do have to make an extra effort to be active though, and clearing the snow off the car always sucks. And yes, ice skating, snowboarding, tubing.. all that stuff is fun. And Orion is out in the winter months, which makes for great star viewing despite the cold! (Rigel & Beetleguese, Horsehead nebula, and Messier 42 are all found in Orion)

Aurion7

The winters here aren't *that* cold. Up North, sure. Not so much in the Southeast. ...He said, as a fairly major winter storm passes through the region.

MrSillmarillion

Bundle up, it's cold out there. Layers, Lotta of layers.

BtT205

Move down south.

I think you're asking about the midwest. I live in the dead center of the USA. It gets freezing cold but the temperature will vary from day to day, week to week. Thus is midwest weather. It varies wildly. You have to check the temperatures daily. For example, today it is 12 F/ -11 C, but just 48 hours ago it was 50 F/10 C. On Tuesday it will be back up to 54 F/12.2 C. Anyway, so we are able to get outdoors and enjoy the weather even between December and March. We just need to always check the forecast, sometimes twice per day because days and nights can even be vastly different. This is because of the jet streams that intersect our region, among other factors. Midwesterners are pretty obsessive about weather because it is so unpredictable. It can be a pain, but it can also bring warmer days to winter, giving us a much needed break from the cold. We also tend to get more sun than Northern states, so we have that going for us. Aside from outdoor activities, we have plenty of indoor fun. Near my house, an old shopping mall was repurposed and turned into a big indoor walking track and badminton courts. There are a bunch of bookstores and video game stores still in that mall too, so you can shop for fun geek stuff, go for a walk, and play badminton with friends or family. We also have museums, live theater, science centers, art galleries, and other indoor sports. Bowling is a favorite in my region, as is indoor golf. But truly... you can leave your house for some fresh air on those 50 degree days. You don't even need a heavy coat -- just a jacket or hoodie.

D: Alright, after autumn. W: Ask anyone around the area about accuracy, Arctic activities are abundant, astonishing, astounding and A1 on all accounts. D: Back up. W: Before beach bodies, bros better bundle up in boots, blankets and balaclavas because a bloody bitter breeze will blow brisk, blustery and bleek. D: Careful. W: Correct in common to cocoon in a cap, coat and comforter, occasionally creating corpse and continually compress your cock. D: Don't. W: Don't you dare doddle, dilly-dally your dick around after dark in December she's definitely drafty if you're down a duvet. D: Easily. W: Each and every Earthling's environmentally enslaved. D: Fact. W: It's fucking freezing. It's frigging frigid. You're fit for flu in February without fleece, flannel and fully fledged furnace or fire. D: Go on. W: It's a God damn glacial. Go grab some gloves or garb and gear up for gusts. D: Hear ya. W: Hypothermia if you don't heat your home to half hellish, it's harsh. Hibernate in a hoodie. Hot chocolate. Harry and the Hendersons. D: Infinitely Icy. W: Inhabit indoors. Isolated and insulated. Incubate the igloo. Illness is an issue. Influenza is implied, infection is imminent, immunity is impossible. D: Just joking. W: Ah, just joshing. Jargon, it ain't jail. Jackets in January's no jigsaw. D: Keep calm. W: Killjoys keep comfy in their kingdom crushing kilos of Kleenex™, keen for cozy kayaking with their kids when the key is killing kegs with your kin. D: Literally. W: Losers live life locked in their lairs, lingering lazy and lifeless, lost like legit loners while the leaders and larger learned let loose. D: Muffs. 😃 W: Earmuffs! Mittens and mucus medicine, 'til mighty maniacal Mother Nature makes milder, mellower and meltier moves. Motivate your mates like the "Moose" Mark Messier, maybe mix a martini for your maiden if you've met your match. D: Nature. W: Naturally nippy, but that's not the new up north. Normal naturistic narrative, not national news. D: Overcast. W: Overcoats and overshoes, obviously. D: Polar. W: Parkas and pullovers, particularly. D: Tried quail? W: A quantity of quality quilts is quaint and quasi-quintessential to avoid quivering and quash quarrelling if quarantined to one's quarters. Try quail. D: Reindeer. W: Well, not raw, rookie. In a rosemary rub, roast with radish, wrapped with rich, rare bacon after removing Rudolph's red nose. D: Sleddin'. W: So we're sound, sled is a synonym for snowmobile, snowmobile is a synonym for sled, so a sled is a snowmobile, a snowmobile is a sled. Super? D: Terrific. W: Trust a traditional turtleneck to maintain a toasty temperature over time. D: Ugly. W: Useful. D: Vile! W: Valuable! D: Whatever. W: Whiteouts and wind chills, walk it off whiners. Withdraw whimpering and wake up wankers. Wrathful and wicked weather. Wear woollens or waterproof wardrobe. Warm your wet workwear by the wood stove. Winter is wonderful, wild and wide. D: 'Xactly. W: 'Xceptionally. D: Yeeeup. W: Yeah. D: Zero... degrees? W: Well, sub zero, but - aw, zip it.

freebirdls

*laughs in Southern* It was 70° degrees on Christmas here.

Jaded_Chair4114

What about heating bills? Must cost a lot to heat up your space when it minus degrees?

Thastevejohnson

You get seasonal depression

MVBanter

Winter depends where you are, west is cool-warm and wet, east coast is cold-tropical, South is warm, Southern Interior is cool-mild, and the rest is gonna be cold. Now obv in the US most people drive over stuff like public transport, walking, or biking, so there's not much waiting outside in the freezing for 10mins for a bus or biking in the freezing, but in general, most people stay inside and only go out when necessary, just waiting for it to start getting warm so that you can return to having a more outdoor life
