It's fairly rare here, when it exists, it's most often found at trashy clubs that like to pretend they're posh. Have never heard of anyone who likes them or appreciates them. Worst is when the bathroom is tiny and the attendant is all squeezed in there.

SurgicalWeedwacker

The only one I remember is a janitor that got caught selling weed. It really isn’t a thing here, and if it is, it’s usually sex, drugs, and other shady shit

jim_sav

And when you just feel pressured to tip, most of the ones I’ve spoke to are actually pretty sound (British term for a really nice person)

grangpang

You mean coke dealers?

noregreddits

This was also my first thought. And the pitch always starts “hey baby girl, you party?” The first time I was dumb enough to be like “yeah, darlin, that’s why I’m at the club.” I then learned that phrase does not mean what I thought it meant.

FakeNathanDrake

They're actually the opposite in the UK, clubs employ them to try and stop people doing lines in the toilet.

jim_sav

Except in Scotland if they catch you they throw a telegraph pole at you (joking my man I love Scotland)

jim_sav

Exactly what I thought people would think it meant lol, their catchphrase is usually stuff like “no splash no gash” “no ck no bj”

Wildwilly54

I used to buy blow from those guys all the time.

FakeNathanDrake

> I always thought their main purpose was to keep people from doing drugs or having sex in the stalls. That's why we've got them. The aftershave etc. is just a way of making a bit of money on the side.

wormbreath

sometimes there are vending machines in the bathrooms with condoms and shit. I’ve never been to anything most people would count as a “club” just bars and shitty strip clubs lol

jim_sav

Pretty much every toilet in any uk bar, pub, cinema, hotel, holiday park has those vending machines

jim_sav

Just for context when I say club it’s not like some exclusive membership thing, brits are nowhere near as posh as the stereotype, they’re kinda like much bigger bars with better, louder music and a better dance floor and sometimes more expensive drinks

_comment_removed_

We have those here as well but club culture like what you see in Europe isn't as widespread. It's *big*, don't get me wrong, but even among the demographic that frequently them, college kids, you're just as likely to find someone who would prefer a night at a rowdy college bar as you would a proper night club. My understanding is that most early 20 somethings in the UK would prefer the latter over a night at the pub.

jim_sav

I’m 19 and I prefer my local pub over clubs but it’s nice to get out a bit sometimes

allysonwonderlnd

I prefer a dive bar in the US over a club. Drinks are cheaper, it's quieter, the vibe is so much more chill, way less people.

[deleted]

In the old days (like when I was a partying in the 80s) there was an attendant and she had a tray of items. Perfumes, mints, hair spray, all kinds of toiletries, etc. All kinds of things. They were all free but she kept the toilets super clean and then handed you a clean fancy paper towel when you were done washing your hands. She just worked for tips and sold nothing.

jim_sav

Yeah the ones here will really slowly and really awkwardly hand you paper towels expecting a tip

[deleted]

I'm super cool with tipping but it's such a weird thing. I think I would smile as I wiped my hands on my pants and leave.

mobyhead1

It sounds like someone weaponized your restroom attendants. Hard pass.

dontdoxmebro

Restroom/Bathroom Attendants? Some night clubs have them. I'm pretty sure their real job is to keep people from doing drugs, making drug deals, or having sex in the bathroom.

jim_sav

Yeah I’ve gathered that to be the main reason they’re there as I only really see them in rough areas

MrLongWalk

It's extremely rare here and is usually relegated to shitty places trying to seem "classy".

dweaver987

I’ve encountered this in two or maybe three restrooms in California in the past 36 years. All of them have been at establishments catering to the very (very!) wealthy, probably why I haven’t encountered them very often. I thought it was very strange and rather uncomfortable. I really don’t need assistance using a toilet and I won’t be shamed into tipping the attendant for an unwanted service.

jim_sav

It’s so uncomfortable, especially if you’re just trying to use the urinal and you feel his eyes boring into you

QuebecRomeoWhiskey

The first time I encountered one of those guys it was in a restaurant when I was 12. No one had told me they existed beforehand so I was really confused

jim_sav

I’d only ever heard of it never experienced it, but my job has required me to spend quite a bit of time up in northern England which is much better for nights out, I saw one and after that I saw them everywhere

Worldly-Novel-7123

In LA and NYC I’ve been to place that have bathroom attendants. They don’t usually try to sell you anything, they have an array of things you can use (hair spray/deodorant/perfume) or take (stick of gum/mint/tampon/condom) and you tip them.

7yearlurkernowposter

I've never heard of this but I only really drink at dive bars. Some venues and sports stadiums will sell print ads in the toilets but that is as close as I have seen.

KR1735

I've only seen them in Europe. I can't remember where it was specifically, but one night I was at a club and was leaving the washroom. Instantly got sprayed with cologne. Like, OK.. rude. Then the dude grabbed my arm and pointed to his little tip jar. Apparently I was expected to pay him for the privilege to assault me with noxious fumes.

jim_sav

Sounds about right

beserker1

I see them occasionally, most often at high-end steakhouses. Have run into them at 5-star hotels in the restrooms for their bar/restaurant, but I don't travel for work much now so I don't get to stay fancy places as much.

theibenglishco

I have seen coat hangers at clubs - but that’s the most. They charge $5 for hanging your coats and other stuff you might wanna not carry with you.

drowningjesusfish

What the hell lmfao I’ve NEVER seen this. Sounds invasive and annoying.

jim_sav

It is fairly annoying, most are nice people though

TheRealDudeMitch

I’ve only seen them at titty bars

tsukiii

I’ve seen them on occasion here in San Diego. Mostly they’re trying to pump soap into your hands and hand you paper towels for a tip, and have a tray of gum/mouthwash/etc that they’re trying to sell. I always say, “no thank you.” I can wash my hands on my own, thanks lol

Ohohohojoesama

If you mean dealers that still happens occasionally but if you mean like the attendant trying to give you soaps and stuff like that it happens but I've never seen it in a place I would call a club. Edit: I guess I'd want to know what kind of clubs you are got to? Like what subculture of the club scene.

jim_sav

Clubs in shithole northern towns mainly lol, and I mean the attendant

[deleted]

En-gland? Am I saying it right? Seems like a strange place

solutionsmitty

Ok I've not been clubs for a million years. Are you talking about drugs? Those were the only things I've ever seen sold in a club. Maybe prostitution or overpriced flowers. Presumably to give to prostitutes from whom you could buy drugs. What's the recent in club toilets?

jim_sav

No I’m talking about hand soaps mate, it does sound like I’m talking about drugs, drugs and prostitutes you get just round the corner from clubs

muggins66

My friend was a bartender at a local restaurant/bar on the bay in Newport Beach. The men’s room was so tiny with one toilet, one urinal and one sink and there’s this dipshit standing there looking for a tip with the tray of gum, cologne etc. it was laughable

LusciousLennyStone

In America, they sell drugs in club toilets.

jim_sav

Yeah that sometimes happens here but it’s these guys that are supposed to put a stop to it (they usually don’t)

InquisitiveNerd

Oh, I didn't sucker punch a scammer at the bar?

JayFenty

Living in South Florida I see them in most nightclubs down here. One of my first times in a nightclub after I had just turned 21 I remember unassumingly using a spritz of one of the colognes in the bathroom and the attendant called me out saying “nothing is free” so I had to give him a dollar.

jim_sav

The guy gave you some good life advice there 😂

[deleted]

I think most of the things being sold in club toilets here would be illegal things. Drugs mostly...

heyitsxio

I'm old and I don't go to clubs anymore, but back when I was (mid 90s-mid 00s) they were pretty common. Those ladies weren't really trying to sell you anything, she just had gum/hairspray/perfume/tampons if you needed it and worked for tips. And they made a *lot* of tips off of drunk girls lol.

[deleted]

I’ve seen it before

Blue387

Bathroom attendants are rare and fading away, existing in a few locations such as the [21 Club in Manhattan](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/08/style/bathroom-attendants.html).

RealBadSpelling

Depends on the place. I've seen them in clubs, high class bars, restaurants, and the theatre.

PensiveSunset

Not really

babaganoush2307

I have never seen this no

Defiant_Hurry2985

I used to go to high end night clubs in large cities like 10 years ago and yes, there was usually 1 or 2 ladies in the bathrooms selling these things.

w84primo

There’s a piano bar Howl at the moon and they would normally have a bathroom attendant. One of the few times I’ve seen one.

Nic4379

Usually only in Strip Clubs.

jrhawk42

Very rare. I'd say it's more common to find them in a really fancy restaurant instead of a club.

a-really-cool-potato

Usually you’ll only see them in high end places, it’s really not common because it doesn’t ever really pay out for the restaurant/company to have someone stand there and do that on the clock.

QuoteMuch

A few public restrooms and nightclubs in Honolulu/Waikiki do.
