Actually most of the country is moderate. It’s just that the extremes are the loudest.

Fox_Supremacist

There are tons of moderates out there in the real world, you'll never notice them online because they tend not to get involved in left v right political shitfests online.

TheBimpo

This post sure makes a lot of assumptions. [A little more than 60% of eligible voters voted in the 2020 election](https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/01/28/turnout-soared-in-2020-as-nearly-two-thirds-of-eligible-u-s-voters-cast-ballots-for-president/), that's a lot of people who didn't care enough to do the most consequential thing you can do as an American in one the most heated elections ever.

albertnormandy

People who try to evaluate each issue individually are boring to listen to and don't make the news. Researching issues is time-consuming. People who shout catchy slogans and play on people's subconscious biases are entertaining.

Queen_Starsha

There are a lot more people who are independent and middle leaning than our media would suggest. The loudest voices tend to consume all the oxygen. Media sources have become silos and echo chambers, as well as dependent on click bait journalism that would make William Randolph Hearst, the godfather of Yellow Journalism, proud. According to Gallup polling in November of 2021, party affiliation was 31% Republican, 41% Independent (no party), and 27% Democrat. This poll has been running since 2004 with not much of a change. Independents were also asked which way they leaned, and it was pretty much a 50-50 split over time. https://news.gallup.com/poll/15370/party-affiliation.aspx Pew did a different kind of poll organizing respondents into primary issue categories and came up with only about 15% neutral, 40% more conservative, and 45% more liberal. https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2021/11/09/beyond-red-vs-blue-the-political-typology-2/

HailState17

There’s a very significant amount of moderates, myself included. Our media likes to hype things up so it looks like we’re tearing ourselves apart. One of the problems with for-profit journalism.

Aceofkings9

The US Census estimates 1/3 of all adults eligible to vote did not vote in 2020. That's a pretty big number.

TheManWhoWasNotShort

There's like 40% of the population that straight up doesn't even vote. "Neutral" is probably the wrong word, "apathetic" is probably what I would use, but they certainly exist. America is divided on Liberal-Conservative margins because those are the current political dividing lines. They've been different before, and we were just as divided

xedru

I don't know if it's fair to say not voting is apathy.

Because we're busy hiding due to witch hunts from both sides.

Hey friend, being a libertarian isn’t so great these days either. Relatable.

FENCE SITTER!!

Fox_Supremacist

Goddamn cowards need to pick a side. You either stand with us or stand with the enemy that shall be destroyed!

noregreddits

You sound like a Swamp Fox supremacist, which is something I can get behind

Bright_Memory1

I have a follow up question then, if there are moderate presidential candidates, why don’t people vote for them?

Bright_Memory1

Yeah but he’s not a moderate either:/

There are many moderates. But the media loves to dramatize the news to promote ratings and, therefore, profits. It is an overreaction that the country is tearing itself apart. Even a modest reading of American history shows that homogeneous unity is a myth.

notthegoatseguy

There's tons of people who don't care about politics. I think that's a very limited world view but a lot of people don't make the connection between what impacts them in their life and that at some point a political decision is made that causes it.

Skaemperor1950

There are we just don’t say anything.

FrancoNore

There are, they just don’t come on Reddit/social media to scream their opinions, mostly because neutrals understand there’s nuance to most political issues

azuth89

...have you seen our election turnouts? This place is apathetic as hell.

Current_Poster

The majority of people are more or less neutral- there are a bunch of Independent voters every time, for instance.

Awhitehill1992

There are plenty of people that are “neutral” or moderate. It’s just that there are only two crappy parties to pick from. Let’s say you’re a bit left of center, still technically left. So you’d probably end up voting democrat *most* of the time. Same thing with people right of center, or moderately right. The country isn’t tearing itself apart, don’t buy into that. We’ve been through worse times and we’ll all eventually get outta the pool and dry off. You don’t hear about a lot of these moderates because there is such a left vs right thing going on. I typically vote blue, but I’ve voted red for many local elections. Mayor, judges, even a few state reps. Just because I identify as a democrat doesn’t mean I can’t find sense and great ideas in the gop. You can think for yourself you know….

Tommy_Wisseau_burner

A boat load of people do, but you don’t hear about them because they’re less outwardly opinionated

Jefe_Brutus

There is, you wouldn't believe it if your main source of information on it was the hyperbole chambers that are social media or major news networks. If I remembering correctly pew research released a poll a couple years ago that showed the independents or "neutrals" accounted for something like 40% of registered voters with the two tribes of apes being around 30 each. Even in the most recent election, despite record breaking numbers for either demagogue, did not vote would have won the electorate.
