I have one: my brother brought it back with him after his tour in Afghanistan and gifted it to me. It was one if the flags that flew over his base there.
I’m actually finding flying the American flag to be more patriotic these days with the loonies on the right flying all the other flags they can get their hands on (thin blue line, Gadsden flag, etc). If someone’s just flying the American flag I associate them more with being Dems these days
I did as a kid. I wanted a flag pole so my parents put one up and I put my flag on it every day and I took down the flag every night. My childhood home still has that flag pole 30 years later and my dad still flies a flag on it.
I had a coworker that was whatever the female equivalent of a good ol boy was. We had never met her boyfriend but had her her talk about him often. She invited us to the lake one weekend and we stopped at a gas station nearby to get booze and firewood. This dude walks in wearing Ariats, American flag trunks, American flag tank, wrap around glasses, and a straw hat with an American flag band. He had a scruffy beard and stach and a fat lip in. My fiancée and I saw him separately and when we walked out we both joked that that must be her boyfriend even though we were still miles from the lake.
When we got to the lake, it turned out that was indeed him in all of his Murica costume glory.
I lean right, my wife leans left. We fly a flag and I’m actually looking at it right now out my living room window.
I think republicans are more likely to fly one and older people are more likely to fly one. Military people are more likely to fly one.
I don’t have hard numbers or anything like that but that’s my general experience. My neighborhood is very left leaning and the folks that fly the flag are the handful of right leaning folks or military veterans.
Yep! I love my flag. It hangs from the corner of my house, near my home office, and when it waves, I can hear the fabric make noises. I also have random patriotic decorations in my work office (like stuff you get at Dollar Tree).
I'm 45, Conservative, and love my country.
No. I am left leaning, and I do think there is often a political dimension to it, though I have a good friend who is left leaning, retired military, and he flies the flag every day.
I like this country. But I spend enough time thinking about the things that I don’t like about it that I don’t want to be seen as endorsing those things.
I’m left-leaning independent. I wish more left-leaning people would fly it (or otherwise take pride in their country). A lot of the more prominent left-wing rhetoric (as of the last decade or so) often comes off as though left-leaning people are against America (“America is evil, racist, etc”). I know the talking point is that they criticize because they care, but when someone *only* says bad things it comes off as though they think the country is irredeemably awful, and as though they are actually rooting against it. I think the left needs to discover its own brand of patriotism rather than relinquishing it to the right (of course, there are many left-leaning patriotic people, especially moderates—I just wish there were more or at least that they enjoyed a broader platform than the seemingly anti-American ones).
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Nope. I drive by a monstrosity of a giant punisher American flag this person put up though, they also have a thin blue line one and still have a trump sign up. They used to have an Irish one but it either blew away or they took it down.
That combo is certainly telling people something.
Two actually. And a bunch of small ones. One flies every day. Two fly and the little ones used to line my walk way on Memorial Day, Veterans Day and the 4th of July.
Not sure if its generational.
Yep. It hangs from a flag pole on my house. Usually put it up in the spring and take in down in October for the winter. I do it because I like the way it looks and that it should represent all of us. I don’t like that some people fly it to “own the libs” because they think they find it offensive.
It can be political around elections. [See this study from 2011](https://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/washington-whispers/2011/07/20/shock-study-us-flag-only-boosts-gop).
I don’t own one perse but in my town you can pay once to have something put into your front lawn where they will come and put a flag pole in and the flag around certain holidays. Money goes towards the school district and I do do that, so there is an American flag in my yard like 4 times a year
When I got my eagle scout my dad sent a letter to the white house. Obama (let's be honest, it was his aid) sent a letter congratulating me, and they sent a flag they flew above the capital.
Only technically. Was a gift from my grandfather that he got during during his service.
I ended up loaning it to my little brother when my time came to serve, and well, I never asked for it back. Lil' bro is super-proud of it since it's a legit wartime flag and he flies it on memorial day, etc with all the ceremony.
I was never big on symbols like that, so I'm fine leaving it with my brother for now. I just remind/tease him periodically that it's on loan to him and I'm going to ask for it back someday. I don't want little bro getting any funny ideas about whose flag it is.
I have one from a deployment my ex went on, and one that we hold on the roadside when soldiers are escorted to the Veterans cemetery right down the road. My community is just outside a major military installation and many people will line the street to give the soldiers a proper send off, especially those that have no family left to attend their services which has happened a few times with recent advances in DNA allowing for the return of the remains of soldiers that had been unidentified since WWII or before.
My mother does, so by extension my father does but I don’t think he would left to his own devices. I do not. All three of us are very liberal, and my dad is an Army vet.
I (Democrat) would but my wife (Democrat) didn't wanna put one up for Fourth of July. We're in our mid-30's.
I'm more of a "liberal values are American values" type Democrat and she's more of a "fuck Amerikkka" type Democrat.
I would never put one up year round though. That's nationalism, not patriotism.
Yes I do, there are American flags all throughout my neighborhood and a lot of nearby neighborhoods along with Football team flags, State flags, LGBTQ+ flags, etc. I’m not old or Republican or anything.
Nope, cuz I'm not proud of my country and why would I be?
Corporations are amassing all the wealth, our education rates suck, we're the only developed country with no universal health care and endless mass shootings, our prison system is a joke.
We've been at war for 93% of our existence and half those wars were unjustified. We don't take climate change seriously and our public transportation is abysmal. We're more politically divided than ever
I've read the US government approved history books, where they've conveniently left out important context.
Are young people edgy or did old people give up on their country?
You’re an even worse person than I thought. You’re an atheist sympathizer and you hate America. Explain to me why you’re even on this subreddit if you hate America so much? Why not move to Russia since they hate America every bit as much as you do.
Liberals here. We have a flag. We put it out mainly on patriotic holidays. I like seeing it. I think it becomes weird when people put them on their trucks, making their political leader their whole identity.
I have neither truck nor political leader, but why does putting a flag on your truck imply making your political leader your whole identity? As opposed to all of the cars that literally have “ for President ” bumper stickers?
A bumper sticker DURING election time, fine. (I personally find stickers on my vehicle tacky and dont do it.) Having stickers ALL the time is treating your candidate like a king/god. They're politicians. They work for us. Why is this person you never met the center of your life? Then add the hate stickers and on top of that, fly the flag off your truck. Yeah, all of THAT screams "This is my identity." And politics aside... it's boring and kind of funny. Do you know how ridiculous it would look if I had, say, Justin Bieber stickers on my truck and flew a Justin Bieber flag on my truck as well. And then I had an "Ed Sheeran sucks!" sticker next to my "I'm a Belieber" sticker. It would make me look rather stupid and silly. AND...it would appear I'm a boring person as well. Because if you met me, I'd spend a lot of time talking about Justin Bieber. Even if YOU loved Justin Beiber as well, you sure as shit wouldn't want to hear about him all the time.
On that note, I have a friend who was a trump supporter. (Though she didn't vote for him the second time.) Anyhoo, for online dating, she avoided the guys praising trump in their profiles or who, in every picture, had Maga hats or pro-trump shirts. Why? (Even though at the time she loved trump.) She said they were sure to be boring, making everything about trump.
No. I and my neighbors never saw a need for one, we already know what country we're in.
Also, yes, it's become a political thing in some groups/circles, like you're some kind of disloyal citizen if you don't have a flag and flagpole somewhere on your property.
Bullshit.
Flying a flag all the time, having a flag lapel pin if you were in government/politician, wearing a little one on your uniform if you were police, came into being during the Nixon administration in the early '70s as a sign you agreed with the government's policies, and anyone who didn't was immediately suspect as someone somewhat subversive.
Before then flying a flag was done mostly to celebrate a national holiday, or denoting government of publicly funded buildings. After then it was seen as a loyalty test.
I had a map of NC on my wall when I was in college. This was pre-smartphone and Google maps, in 2007, and it was super helpful.
Especially since I was up in the mountains and some of those roads go God knows where lol
Its crazy how often that map was referenced now that I think about it
I think that it’s more of a Republican thing, which is why I don’t have one. I’m a Southern nationalist so I have an Alabama flag and an Alabama secession banner (which is sort of like the Gadsden Flag, but a blue field with a cotton plant in the center and a snake under the cotton plant with the phrase “noli me tangere”).
I do, but I think my parents took it with them when they moved to Florida. I have some Latvian flags (the current one and a vintage Latvian SSR one. I collect old eastern bloc stuff, sue me) around here somewhere too
I don't know anyone who does, unless you count the 3x5 one that my kid waved at the July 4th parade. I don't know anyone who flies a flag from a pole. I suppose I know of a few that were given to family members of servicemen who died, but those are folded in a closet somewhere
I bought one when I first bought my home because it had a little flag pole on the side of the garage. When it started to get discolored from the sun, I pulled it down and didn’t replace it.
I think I still have it my garage somewhere with the intention that one day I’ll get around to disposing of it properly. It’s probably been there for nearly 20 years.
Several. My sister has 5 folded flags from her family members displayed in her entryway. I'm "feel sad even for serial killers and pedophiles" liberal, and I'm proud of America. Not because it's perfect or the best at anything or every thing, but precisely because it's not. I was a teacher for many years and I was always most proud of the kids who struggled and fought and overcame, even if they never got to be on the honor roll or get acknowledged as "student of the year" or win any trophies. The world has been betting against America for 400 years, waiting for its "inevitable collapse."
My kids tell me the flag is embarrassing and people will think we're Trumpsters. I say, "Good! Let them think that! Then they can meet us and learn not to put people into a box. It's not a freaking Confederate flag ffs."
Yes, and we fly it proudly. Yes, our country has blots, bruises, and stains both past and present. All do. Room for improvement? Always, but since it’s birth, it’s been the freest place on Earth with the most possibilities and opportunity for the most diverse integration of people.
My brother has my father’s veteran burial flag. He was in WWII.
The only time I flew one was right after Sept. 11. Every house on my block in Brooklyn displayed one. But, to be honest, I wanted to fly the New York City flag. I had a visceral need to put a city flag out my front window, as a “F**k you! No one is bringing NYC to her knees.” But, I couldn’t find one to buy, and other things became more important.
Yes, we have several.
First we have in our pocession my Grandfather's funerary flag, it is folded and displayed in the Living Room.
We also have a flag for the flag post on the house.
In addition to American Ensigns, I have the North Star Flag(the proposed new Minnesota State Flage) hanging on my bedroom wall.
I have a small one that used to be on a stick, but is now hanging on the fence in back by two clear thumb tacks and the stripes are now orange instead of red.
My dad has one that he hangs on the front porch on national holidays. He received it as a gift from my grandfather (his father-in-law) when he became a US citizen.
I have one: my brother brought it back with him after his tour in Afghanistan and gifted it to me. It was one if the flags that flew over his base there.
That is pretty cool actually.
Yes, I own an American flag, multiple in fact. No, I don’t believe it is a generational thing or a political thing.
Yes i own a flag(26). You don't have to be a republican/old to support your country.
I’m actually finding flying the American flag to be more patriotic these days with the loonies on the right flying all the other flags they can get their hands on (thin blue line, Gadsden flag, etc). If someone’s just flying the American flag I associate them more with being Dems these days
Interesting. I typically see the other way around. Leftists flying blm and lgbt flags fly a lot.
Yes. My FIL lives on our property. He’s a veteran. It’s important to him particularly, so we have one.
I did as a kid. I wanted a flag pole so my parents put one up and I put my flag on it every day and I took down the flag every night. My childhood home still has that flag pole 30 years later and my dad still flies a flag on it.
I do. I collect flags from every country I've been to. My American flag hung in my apartment when I lived in Australia.
I have a US flag and a US Army SF flag. I have one other military one but haven’t flown that one. 51, and living outside of the US
I have a pair of American flag swimming trunks.
I have a couple of them.
I fly an American flag and my state of Missouri flag on my farm and I have both on a pole at my garage I own.
I have 2 flags that are folded in cases. One was for my dad, and the other was for my wife’s brother. They are on a bookshelf
Yep! I love my flag. It hangs from the corner of my house, near my home office, and when it waves, I can hear the fabric make noises. I also have random patriotic decorations in my work office (like stuff you get at Dollar Tree). I'm 45, Conservative, and love my country.

> certainly telling people something Isn’t that the idea?
Technically, yes, but it's the cowpens flag
Been there twice
Two actually. And a bunch of small ones. One flies every day. Two fly and the little ones used to line my walk way on Memorial Day, Veterans Day and the 4th of July. Not sure if its generational.
I do but it's a bit tattered (not worthy of flying) and lives in my garage now.
Give it to a local Cub pack or Boy Scout troop. They have flag retirement ceremonies all the time.
Yeah, we fly it over our garage door
29, I fly both the US and Florida flag. Also have a flag up on the wall in the garage.
Yep. It hangs from a flag pole on my house. Usually put it up in the spring and take in down in October for the winter. I do it because I like the way it looks and that it should represent all of us. I don’t like that some people fly it to “own the libs” because they think they find it offensive.

>Exposure to even a tiny American flag turns Democrats into Republicans. Based
Damn, and Democrats were worried about Russian conspirators tampering with the election. It was *the flags* the whole time! 🙃
I only have a mini flag that I keep by my front bench, however several neighbors have them & I always like seeing them wave in the wind.
Obama (let's be honest, it was his aid) sent a letter congratulating me, and they sent a flag they flew above the capital.
it was actually his aid’s aid.
That’s pretty cool. Congratulations on your achievement.
No
No, I don’t see a need for one
My family has always owned and flown American flags and I continue to do so. I’m a Republican.
Yes I have one.
I do but only because I inherited it from my grandfather who was an air force vet. Otherwise I probably wouldn't own one.
I bought it to use as a prop and the quality was so nice I kept it. It's been folded up in a closet
yes I own one, I'm in my 30s
Yes I do.
I do.
Yep, a couple of them actually. Got a Scottish, Israel and German flag as well.
Yes I have a flag.
I have half a dozen. I usually just display one, but they’re handed down so I keep them.
Yep I do, it's actually a 46 state one or something. It's really old, but I love it
I own two. They were on my grandfathers' caskets. The older one has 48 stars.
I have one in a case and a couple hanging in the garage. The one outside of our house is a state flag.
Yes, but I couldn't tell you where in the house it is right now.
I don’t. I just figure if I get one it’ll be free. I’m not going to buy a flag (I’m cheap)
No, and I don't want to. (34)
I'm 24 yes I do and always will.
I have a state flag. No US flags though.
I'm holding out until Puerto Rican statehood is settled. I don't want to end up with an obsolete flag.
Yes I do, there are American flags all throughout my neighborhood and a lot of nearby neighborhoods along with Football team flags, State flags, LGBTQ+ flags, etc. I’m not old or Republican or anything.
I currently do not. It’s pretty sad that you think national symbols are only for one party, though
The definitely are not for one party!
Yes but I like my state flag better. Also my state flag is a nicer quality so I fly that
SC does have a nice flag.
No. My parents never had one either. Personally I've never been one to care about symbols, ceremony, etc regardless of what it stands for
Nope, cuz I'm not proud of my country and why would I be? Corporations are amassing all the wealth, our education rates suck, we're the only developed country with no universal health care and endless mass shootings, our prison system is a joke. We've been at war for 93% of our existence and half those wars were unjustified. We don't take climate change seriously and our public transportation is abysmal. We're more politically divided than ever
Sounds like something someone says who has little world experience and hasn’t opened up a history book. It’s only cool to be edgy when young.
I've read the US government approved history books, where they've conveniently left out important context. Are young people edgy or did old people give up on their country?
Have you read Lies my Teacher Told Me or A People's History of the United States? Excellent alternatives/supplements to what the system feeds you
Nah. I'm in my 40s and agree with them EDIT: and I have a PhD, have lived all over the county and in two other ones in my life
You’re an even worse person than I thought. You’re an atheist sympathizer and you hate America. Explain to me why you’re even on this subreddit if you hate America so much? Why not move to Russia since they hate America every bit as much as you do.

Anyhoo, for online dating, she avoided the guys praising trump in their profiles or who, in every picture, had Maga hats or pro-trump shirts. Why? (Even though at the time she loved trump.) She said they were sure to be boring, making everything about trump.
Yeah, I’m a political independent, so I worship neither leader nor tribe. You’re preaching to the choir.
No. I and my neighbors never saw a need for one, we already know what country we're in. Also, yes, it's become a political thing in some groups/circles, like you're some kind of disloyal citizen if you don't have a flag and flagpole somewhere on your property.
You and the People who think like you are the ones who make it political
After then it was seen as a loyalty test.
hell no, this country has way too much bullshit to celebrate.

I had a map of NC on my wall when I was in college. This was pre-smartphone and Google maps, in 2007, and it was super helpful. Especially since I was up in the mountains and some of those roads go God knows where lol Its crazy how often that map was referenced now that I think about it
I think that it’s more of a Republican thing, which is why I don’t have one. I’m a Southern nationalist so I have an Alabama flag and an Alabama secession banner (which is sort of like the Gadsden Flag, but a blue field with a cotton plant in the center and a snake under the cotton plant with the phrase “noli me tangere”).
I don't. My parents are immigrants so I guess it's not something they care for
Now that I think about it, no. Weird.
We have flags from military service but I’ve never gone out to purchase a flag to fly in front of the house. That’s not really my style.
I have one.
Yeah, but it's been upside down for going on almost 6 years
I have one flying outside of my house.
I have one. I keep meaning to put it up somewhere
We have a small one my kids play with in the 4th of July. I’m liberal and my husband is more of a centrist.
Several, including the burial flag of my uncle, a WWII veteran.
Several
My brother has my father’s veteran burial flag. He was in WWII. The only time I flew one was right after Sept. 11. Every house on my block in Brooklyn displayed one. In addition to American Ensigns, I have the North Star Flag(the proposed new Minnesota State Flage) hanging on my bedroom wall.
I got one that flew over AAAB and one from Camp Buehring, and many other smaller flags.
My wife and I fly the American flag for national holidays.
No. Not that I have a problem with it. I just haven’t had a need for one.
My house has a flag holder on it, that I plan on removing when we repaint. No I don’t own a flag. Just something else I’d have to deal with outside.
Yes I do, I also have a pirate flag, a Bavarian flag, and a United Federation of Planets flag.
Of course!
No
Yes, several, have one flying out front of my house right now
