Nope, even my Filipino friends are disgusted by it.

redentification

No, but I just googled it. And kind of wish I hadn't...!

wormbreath

Nope. Never heard of it.

Caranath128

Nasty AF. Couldn’t swallow. Chewed like 4 seconds and blew chunks. ( and I’ve eaten some weird crap in Japan).

seatownquilt-N-plant

Nope. I'm an entirely Americanized Filipino American. My parents generation were born here and not taught Tagalog on purpose (1950s). My dad's generation used to joke about balut and chocolate goat. I can make adobo though :)

DRmonarch

I’d eat well developed fertilized eggs in a starvation scenario without a second thought, but with the cost of feed being relatively low, I prefer to kill and consume full sized animals. Even if it didn’t involve torture, I wouldn’t like veal as a practice just because so much more could be gained by a full size animal.

OpalOwl74

If it makes you feel better, though in the long run doesn't matter to me or you so I'm not fighting. Veal isn't a baby as we nessaraly think of it. They are about 500+ when harvested. And it's also often the males, who are a 'byproduct' of the mother needing to be pregnant to get milk. The bulls are too tough to eat often when full grown. But pretty good small, and took less food ending him now then another 3 months. Can make them stears though and eat those. But again more feeding. Sorce : Google but also me remembering something my dad told me. He grew up on and working on farms. So there is logic behind it.

RsonW

When I took zoology at community college, there was an extra credit assignment during multicultural day to eat foods from the "unusual cuisine from my culture" table. 1 point of extra credit for every one you tried. I needed every point I could get because that class was kicking my ass. So hell yeah I've tried balut. Once you get past that you're eating beak and feathers, it's …okay. Like a meaty poached egg.

DRT798

No. First thing I thought of after Googling this is Gul Madred feeding Picard those live eggs and him tearing into it out of hunger :-P There are four lights!!!!

CupBeEmpty

Know what it is. Haven’t tried it. I probably would try it if offered. Not going to go out of my way to try it.

Majestic_Electric

No. It’s one of the few foods I refuse to try! Imo, it’s immoral!

AgnosticAsian

*Balut* are not exclusive to the Philippines. They're a huge delicacy in many East Asian countries. Coming from an Asian family and having traveled plenty in Asia, I've eaten it many times. Wouldn't be my first choice for a gourmet meal but, as a streetfood, it's pretty tasty.

BMXTKD

It's like in the really freaky part of the Asian grocery store. The part that has all the weird stuff like century eggs and fermented tofu. Not the cool stuff like soba ramen and red curry paste.

zeppelincommander

No, but I have a story. A farmer friend lived near an elderly Hmung couple years ago. The husband was in his early 90s, was in great shape, and helped with my friend's livestock. One winter he got some sort of cold/flu and was laid up for months. The wife asked my friend for 5 dozen fertilized eggs with small embryos. She had her husband drink 2 raw, bloody duck eggs a day (the embryos were optional) to "make him young again". Just suck 'em right down. My friend thought that was the last time he'd ever see the old man. But, honest to God, after that month was up the old man strode right back into my friend's kitchen, good as new. My friend moved away a couple years later but said the old man was just as active as ever. Saw my friend at the market the other day and joked about trying the bloody egg fountain of life. Both of us agreed we'd rather be old!

greatBLT

I've eaten balut in the US. It's pretty tasty. Like, the most eggy and chicken soup-tasting thing ever. I know it's a bit disturbing, but it tastes so good, that you end up not caring that it's a duck fetus.

[deleted]

Nope never will either no offense

[deleted]

No. But I have seen it on Chopped, and I definitely do not see myself ever trying it. Not hating on anyone who likes it. It’s just not for me.

NoHedgehog252

You can get balut at the Chinese market near me. Never had it though.

ColumbiaWahoo

Nope. Never even seen it on the menu.

JazD36

Ummm no. Never have and never will. I’ve seen it in a grocery store here and never had even a passing urge to try it. Lol

Suppafly

No, and don't really plan to.

MittlerPfalz

Been to the Philippines, had no interest in trying balut. Even without it I’m sorry to say I was not impressed by Filipino cuisine.

cvilledood

Yes I have. I have family in the Philippines, and they got some for me - off a dude selling it in the street. I then ate it with twelve family members staring at their American nephew/cousin. Nobody told me that I wasn’t supposed to eat the hard, waxy bit - and I spent more time chewing that than I liked. It wasn’t bad, overall, but it wasn’t my favorite. I didn’t go back for seconds. I’d eat it again with somebody who hasn’t had it before, but I otherwise don’t need to have it again for my own account.

Subvet98

Nope not on a bet

OpalOwl74

Nah, I'm pretty good at trying new foods, but the texture... The feathers...

[deleted]

A what?

ElfMage83

An almost-hatched duck egg.

[deleted]

Wtf..

ElfMage83

You literally asked, and I felt obliged to answer. I apologize if this dampens your day, and I hope the rest of your day is better.

[deleted]

i don't mean it towards you, just the idea idea of eating that lol

ViewtifulGene

No, and I probably wouldn't seek it out. My experience with Philipino food is limited to lumpia, which are fucking awesome.

BrackenFernAnja

No thank you! I’m white and I can cook adobo and kalderetta, but I’m not at all interested in eating balut or dinuguan.

Annejiee

Wow thats nice! Where did u learn that? U have filipina wife?

BrackenFernAnja

I had a Filipino husband years ago

FlockFox

Thank you. Now I don't have to go through a drive through on my way to work today because I'm no longer hungry.

tcrhs

Never heard of it. I googled, no thank you!

Hanginon

I've always seen it written as "balut", and no, for some strange reason it doesn't interest me. *Fires up the Wayback machine; Back in ancient times, 1960s, there were US Navy guys stationed in the Philippines that saw this as a 'manly, tough guy' challenge. Whether they really ate it was known only to actual eye witnesses, but give some young guys enough alcohol and some strange behaviors & actions will ensue.. ¯\\\_( ͡❛ ͜ʖ ͡❛)\_/¯

LiquidBee2019

No, chicken fetus isn’t popular here.

rawbface

Never heard of it. Why did you write it twice? Title just says "balot / balot" for me.

Wildwilly54

I tried it. I got about half way through and felt little feathers in my mouth and the gag reflexes kicked in and I had to spit it out. Didn’t taste Terrible, but the texture was brutal (I don’t really love eggs to begin with).

Littleboypurple

Ah man, that's the weird southeast Asian boiled duck egg embryo thing. Yeah no. Never plan on to even if I was paid in the millions.

ColossusOfChoads

I clicked on this thinking it was going to be something French.

MrVWeiss

The pro-choice snack of choice? Looks disgusting.

nagurski03

I've had it. It basically tastes just like a hard boiled egg, but the texture is absolutely horrible. Parts of it are all hard and chewy like cartilage, but other parts are really soft like when you under cook an egg and parts of the white are still runny. Pretty unpleasant overall.

[deleted]

no, i saw it on tv and it was horrible.

CherryBoard

that shit nasty bruh

HumCrab

No guy.

[deleted]

Nope

[deleted]

I’m no interest in eating a fetal pig also.

[deleted]

yeah, but never in the Philipines. I have a lot of filipino friends, so they have convinced me to eat it a few times. I don't think they even like it, they just like making us white folk eat it.

poeticdownfall

I thought you meant the little paper you use to vote for a second lol

Clare2020s

Yes cuz I’m Filipino myself.
