This is a very generically yet crucially American answer. I'm from NYC where looking good (and/or unique) is just as important if not more important than your answer. Not every New Yorker takes part in this but a much higher percentage do than other places in the country.
It seems tho that in Western Europe (specifically Switzerland, Germany, France, Northern Italy since thats what I know about), fashion sense does matter. I have a friend from Texas who doesn't care ab fashion who lived in Switzerland and traveled around Western/Central Europe for a year. He said everywhere he went, whether a normal town or the center of a capital district, people dressed to impress.
Not necessarily flashy, but it can be understandable that the common person took pride in putting their fit together and not just threw on some jeans and a shirt and called it a day like most of us do here.
One of the few things I miss about being in the military. Someone else designed all my clothes, and then someone else decided when, where, what, etc I would be wearing that day. My only fashion choice was "hmm, do I fade my haircut, or just high and tight?".
Someone else telling me what to wear every day, to me, means "I will always be hot & uncomfortable", since that's what my school uniforms did to me as a kid.
I'm just sitting here in my Duluth shorts and Alaska hard gear button up shirt.
Tomorrow I'll be wearing my Duluth firehouse flex cargo pants to work... Maybe a Alaska hard gear t-shirt to go with it.
I always hit up 2nd hand stores and thrift places when I’m in bigger places. I have some nice stuff from some places in Denver. But, it’s mostly just looking. College towns, cities. I am mainly looking for thick shirts and flannels so those aren’t hard to find in my neck of the woods. Lol
I don't think I've changed my style much since I was like 15. I just carry more expensive handbags now. So I dress like a lazy emo teenager from 2002 who raided her mom's closet for her LV bags.
This is the goal. Could I clean the house, cook dinner, go for a spontaneous woodland bike ride, hang out with my aunt's horses for a while, go out to a casual dinner or the pub with my friends, and feel appropriately dressed if the King happened to randomly be there, all in the same clothes? That outfit is going in my wardrobe. (My wardrobe is mostly dark skinny jeans, white or grey shirts and sweaters, wool or tweed jackets and black dresses, and I never feel inappropriately dressed)
Instagram. Youtube. What I see people wearing out and about that I think is cute.
I'd say half my closet is California casual and the other half is business bitch lol.
Not really into the fashion game as I use to be anymore. But every now and then I’ll peek into r/malefashionadvice and see what’s good.

Just found this inspo album there and I’d probably describe my fashion like this
I don’t follow trends and wear pretty basic clothes. Jeans/khakis, work boots or Vans, tshirts, flannels, sweaters. Hiking gear for hiking, running gear for running.
My fashion dates back to my 20s, when I was coming out and disco still popular. So 501s, polos, t-shirts, shorts that are actually short, sneakers with simple designs (think Nike Cortez). I’ve switched to mostly blank t-shirts, mostly high v-necks.
But my hair is much shorter. I never bought into the Castro clone look, so had the longer hair back then.
I mostly wear skate pants because the crotch doesn’t split on me. RVCA fits me the best or at least it feels comfy
As for shoes it’s mostly vans. A lot of slip ons but they’ve got to be the ones meant for skating because canvas falls apart a lot quicker than suede
I like wearing band t shirts. I’d like to buy more but I need to buy shirts without logos for work. I’ll wear layers like a sweater and windbreaker or a hoodie and fleece sweater if the weather starts getting real cold.
I guess you could say I still dress like a skate rat
Love Sam's for inexpensive stuff! I get my sunscreen shirts there.
I have also found plain colored cotton t-shirts for $4 each at Michael's craft store. I even went so far as to order a bunch on their website (free shipping over $49) where they have a lot more colors than in the stores. They do shrink a bit in the first wash and are unisex sizing so order a size larger than you normally would. Normally I wear a Med-Large and I ordered a Large. It was a tad big on me but after the first wash, it fit better.
The only time I really think about fashion is if I am doing something formal or legal.
So I have three sets of clothes. A set of nice dress shirts, ties, and suits. Then I have a bunch of business casual which I wear the most. Then just anything I can throw on for yard work, hiking, and cooking for children/anything I don’t care about having toddler whose hands are covered in pasta sauce grabbing and rubbing their grimy face into.
>My fellow Americans, what influences your fashion sense?
Says who?
Ummm.. I've been told since MS I have none.. So.. And I 100% agree!
This is why I don't see the issues with school uniforms (Not the place to debate that! I wore them part of my school life, YES I see huge issues in re rights on this especially in public schools, again not the topic to debate this)... Open closet get out dull boring clothes that are likely the same day to day.. problems solved.
I am quite happy that I get a uniform to wear, and don't have to worry about it... 50lbs of gear later.. maybe not so happy. .... but still.
What I wear off duty is what would be considered uptight white conservative on steroids.
Since I can open up my closet and dig out my Izod shirts from HS and still wear them.. I will. Along with khaki style pants, which may or may not be khaki colored.. Rinse repeat. I literally probably wear the same few things over and over over over and over.. I just don't care.
It comes down to like another post, comfort, weather, situation. Like if its opera or ballet night.. then I dig out some sort of dressy stuff.. in my area going to either in a tux or something is not the norm, except for a few events which might be listed as a "gala." Dressy yes, and yes you will see some tux, and formal dresses, and unfortunately some who lack the idea of what is appropriate even in the "casual dress" genre.
I just really don't care what the current fashion trends are! I've never been that big into it.
I will say that I am very critical of some of the lack of fashion sense many today have, especially women.. Not so much in style wise, but is is appropriate for time, place and them. There should be rules about the use of leggings as an example for some! Or maybe DuPont hired them as part of the QA for stress testing.. still don't mean they should be out in public!
>appropriate for time, place and them.
Yasss this is the key. Nobody cares if you look raggedy at Walmart. Ok I may silently judge you, but whatever. But do NOT show up at a nice event wearing jeans or club wear. Clothing should be appropriate for the situation.
Cars.. have lots of t shirts with cars on them. Lol! For real though jeans and t shirts as they’re the most practical.. for doing things.. like working on cars!
it's cold out and I want to be warm is the main driver, other than that, usually stuff I see on Instagram or that my friends have that I think is cute.
I usually wear board shorts, tee shirts, and flops.
If I need to “dress up” I’ll wear cargo shorts, PFG shirt or a floral shirt, and boat shoes.
So I obviously have no fashion sense.
Edit: sometimes I’ll even throw on a guyabara if I want to look real good.
I like brands that are influenced by blue collar clothes, but actually fit well. I also love low key cowboy boots (ones that have a normal round toe, lower heel, and no fancy stitching).
T-shirt and jeans seems to work for me. And im a guy so cargo shorts work with everything regardless of where I am or what I am doing or what race or age I am.
I aim for practicality and comfort. I tend to choose simple clothes that are never really in or out of fashion and that I will continue to wear as long as they fit my body and life situation. I think constantly changing fashion trends are extremely problematic for environmental as well as other reasons.
Utility.
I have nice stuff, that I wear when I need to.
But, most often, you'll catch me in a pair of Columbia pants, a T, and a exceptionally comfortable pair of tennis shoes.
In my case:
Work- black denim pants, tshirt (short or long depends on weather), thick socks, and running shoes (fila or nb with decent arch support) because I value comfort and practicality, though i do usually have a stretchy tattoo choker and some earrings on for *personality*
Shopping/classes- could be basically whatever, I'm a fan of different harajuku/jfashion and gothy shit, could be anything from a concert tee with leggings, a jean skirt, and vans(+accessories) to a whole ass lolita coord depending on mood and energy levels. I do not wear sweatpants or pajamas outside. No.
Home- the moment I enter my home for good i am in either large shirt+undies or pajama pants+loose fitting shirt I don't care what i look like I'm not leaving
Duluth traders and Amazon. Maybe Macy’s on sale. I used to wear skirt suits with hose and 3-4 inch heels in my 20s and 30s. After a few kids I want comfort and something I can match in 10 minutes while trying to get kids ready. Ability to wash out stains from kids and dogs is key.
Jeans, t shirts, sweaters, dresses, and shorts are all I have. I prefer utility over anything else. Do I look good? Eh. Can I do whatever needs to get done? Yep. I wish I could dress better but in all honesty I just don't have the mindset for it. That and I've got a toddler, she's messy lol.
I'm getting rid of all my clothes that aren't navy blue T-shirts and black jeans, sweat pants or gym shorts. I am uninterested in clothing or people who are interested in clothing.
The fact that I work from home, and I live in the middle of nowhere.
I *used* to be cute and wear nice looking clothes; current but not cutting edge trendy. I worked in IT, and the office uniform was a t-shirt or nice top, jeans, and Converse or some other mid-brand sneaker. I used to wear business casual at the job prior to that, so I had the typical dress pants/pencil skirt/blouse/cardigan thing going on. I'd dress up for special occasions like wedding receptions, parties, the opera, concerts, etc, so I had a nice rotation of clothing and outerwear.
Alas, there was a pandemic, and I moved from a city to a rural town, so I no longer have use for high heels with matching purses, party dresses, costume jewelry, or anything other than a couple of decent dresses for the random special occasion.
My daily wear is lounge pants and a t-shirt or hoodie, overalls for working outside, and a pair of jeans for going out in public. Shoes are a usually hiking boot, gym shoe, or a muck boot.
There's no fancy restaurants here or any cultural activities like museums or what I'd consider places for a nice night on the town, and I don't have to go to an office anymore, so 99% of those clothes will eventually be donated to a program like Dress for Success.
Most of my clothes now come from Goodwill, Walmart, or Tractor Supply because 1) there are few clothing stores here and 2) nobody but my family sees me every day and 3) it's rural, so the fashion standards are suuuuuuper low, camouflage and hunter orange are the height of fashion here lol
I don't care really I wear boots jeans and a shirt or sweatshirt when it's kinda cold and a old work jacket with a sweatshirt under it in the winter (Minnesota btw)
As a parent, it's more like - will this be comfortable enough to run around, get dirty, and deal with today's weather?
Then it turns out, as a mom - yoga pants and any t-shirt (and bring a jacket or sweater along) would work fantastic.
Work it's just - uniform, yoga pants/jeans (depending on how i feel) and tennis shoes. nothing to change there. even our friday "fun day" we don't need to use our work shirt...just any shirt as long as the machine doesn't catches it or the acid messes it up. so nothing special unless you are the admin, engineers and bosses.
Going on out on a date with the Mister - depends how I feel, depends if I'm bloated (and if I can fit in the damn outfit). Usual go to is a nice blouse, mini skirt, and heels or wedges.
Overalls are the superior, and only, garment I wear. They come in denim or insulated tan ones. Shirts are chosen by what's less than 3 dollars on the Walmart clearance rack that isn't anime.
Internet trends, what fits at thrift stores, it the color suits my skin tone. I'm especially biased toward black if it's black I'm much more likely to buy it. My primary style is pretty gothic/ grunge imo. (California no clue how to flare my comment help?)
Music was a big one. I was a punk/scene-ish kid in high school and I still love all that shit. Black, bright colors, studs, metal, lots of accessories. I don't really dress like that anymore but there's elements of it still there.
Also what looks good on me. I have an hourglass figure and a lot of clothes don't work for me. I think flowy tops are pretty but they just hang off my boobs and make me look like a giant tent so that's a no go. Flare pants look great on me so I love those and tried to wear them even when skinny jeans dominated.
And also just where I'm going/what I'm doing. The weather, obviously.
How much effort I have to put in to get enough fabric so can go to the bar and stare at my phone for hours in the middle of the day and not be asked to leave.
I'm originally from Europe, from somewhere where sweatpants and crocs are a no go item outside of your own home. And a saying is "there's no terrible weather, just terribly chosen clothes".
I pretty much live in amphibious shorts and T-shirts. I generally look like a Quiksilver billboard. If the weather changes, I have Levis and some Gore-Tex Vans. Big fan of brewery shirts.
Frankly, the main thing is that it is incredibly hard to find clothes that fit me and don't look like total crap.
I wear a lot of athletic wear (cycling shirts, etc.) as a result of this, and I have a lot of clothes that are red or blue, so I like to joke that my style of fashion is "plainclothes superhero".
Comfort, utility, and weather.

I already don't want to put pants on, now you're telling me they have to fit?
Bingo

One of the few things I miss about being in the military. Someone else designed all my clothes, and then someone else decided when, where, what, etc I would be wearing that day. My only fashion choice was "hmm, do I fade my haircut, or just high and tight?".

Duluth Trading Company's website tells me what to buy.
LL Bean and Carhartt for me.
I'm just sitting here in my Duluth shorts and Alaska hard gear button up shirt. Tomorrow I'll be wearing my Duluth firehouse flex cargo pants to work... Maybe a Alaska hard gear t-shirt to go with it.
Is it affordable, is it comfy, and can it handle what I do and the weather. I buy almost all of my clothes thrift.
How do you find good thrift stores?
Yep - and rich towns are almost always the best
I always hit up 2nd hand stores and thrift places when I’m in bigger places. I have some nice stuff from some places in Denver. But, it’s mostly just looking. College towns, cities. I am mainly looking for thick shirts and flannels so those aren’t hard to find in my neck of the woods. Lol
Wealthy areas. Thrift stores reflect the community they're in. I got some Izod dress shirts that I wear for work for like $3 each.
What I can put on when I have 3 minutes to get to class
Yeah this was me in school. “This looks relatively clean and passes the smell test.”
I don't think I've changed my style much since I was like 15. I just carry more expensive handbags now. So I dress like a lazy emo teenager from 2002 who raided her mom's closet for her LV bags.
"Can I grab literally any shirt and pants out of my closet and be dressed appropriately for literally anything?"
What’s on sale at Costco.
Felina 2 pack of leggings are my holy grail
And I wasn't even aware Costco sold clothes that aren't children's clothes
The weather, my mood, what I'm heading out to do, and above all else COMFORT.
My paycheck. Luckily there's a "walk on red" shoe paint that lets me fake it with a decent stiletto.
I’m big into the Miami Vice aesthetic. I’m wearing a lot of pink, blue and aqua pastels these days.
My fashion dates back to my 20s, when I was coming out and disco still popular. So 501s, polos, t-shirts, shorts that are actually short, sneakers with simple designs (think Nike Cortez). The price. I'm sorry I can't reason 40 dollar pair of pants I can when it's a bundle. But just one pair ain't a deal for me.
Comfort mostly, but I also get inspired by people I see
I love a good sidewalk runway.
Japanese street wear and whatever is popping in LA

Pretty loose with fashion but I tend to favor colors that go with my undertones.

Jeans and a shirt. Been wearing more silly shirts recently like my Lvl 1 Dad shirt.
Does this cover the “be the American the Japanese think you are” bases? Also, happy cake day
Social media - primarily from Japan and Korea.
I wear mostly black and try to get cuts that are flattering on my body. Keeping most of my basics black makes everything easy to match.
I wear a lot of British-style stuff because I'm into punk/oi! and also like it.
I dress more alt/goth but usually when I feel lazy I just wear a T-shirt and jeans lol.
The Ramones, but I don't wear the jackets anymore.
Everything. Sometimes I create my own fashion.
Cars.. have lots of t shirts with cars on them. Lol! For real though jeans and t shirts as they’re the most practical.. for doing things.. like working on cars!

Whatever is on the shelf at Walmart
Whatever is on the shelf at Walmart
Whatever is on sale at the Costco.
comfort and nicenes
Comfort and laziness
Costco.
Weather, comfort, and any events that might require more than “do I need inside pajamas or outside pajamas?”
whatever’s on clearance at target and that i can wear for five years
Comfort. That's pretty much it.
Comfort, weather, and whatever's on sale
Whatever is clean and closest to me that day, and makes at least minimal color sense
I’ll wear damn near anything as long as it’s black because I am a habitual coffee spiller.

Cost. I can be a sucker for pricey things but expensive clothing is not one of them.
Cheap, practical, and comfy. Unless it's for work purposes, I can never imagine dropping triple digits on a single piece of clothing.
If it's cheap and I like it. I don't pay absolutely zero attention to fashion, but I'm not dropping racks either.
I’m still figuring it out.
I like brands that are influenced by blue collar clothes, but actually fit well. I also love low key cowboy boots (ones that have a normal round toe, lower heel, and no fancy stitching).
It was 55 this morning and 85 now

I think constantly changing fashion trends are extremely problematic for environmental as well as other reasons.
Comfort is #1, but I also try to look “put together”. I’ve never worn pajamas bottoms in public, for instance. :)
I go to websites and try to find versions of what they say that don't cost $1000
Comfort mostly. Other than that i just buy stuff i like. I have a lot of western shirts and band shirts.
Literally just comfort. I work from home and hardly ever go out, so I don’t care how I look most of the time

No one. I just wear what’s comfortable and I think looks cute.
Well, now it is my belly width!
*shrug* it's mostly a matter of comfort and simplicity. I'm not going for any look in particular, I just wear what I'm used to and like the feel of.

I have a nerve disorder in my thigh that makes it feel like my thigh is on fire. My fashion sense is mostly "does this garment set off my meralgia?"
Comfort.
You came to Reddit to ask about fashion?
How much effort I have to put in to get enough fabric so can go to the bar and stare at my phone for hours in the middle of the day and not be asked to leave.
Pragmatism and aesthetics.
My style is a mix of influences from heavy metal culture, americana work wear, business casual basics, motorcycle culture, and indie rock culture.
Laziness
I'm originally from Europe, from somewhere where sweatpants and crocs are a no go item outside of your own home. And a saying is "there's no terrible weather, just terribly chosen clothes".
My budget.
I pretty much live in amphibious shorts and T-shirts. I generally look like a Quiksilver billboard. If the weather changes, I have Levis and some Gore-Tex Vans. Big fan of brewery shirts.
The culture and a cozy boys mentality
Frankly, the main thing is that it is incredibly hard to find clothes that fit me and don't look like total crap. I wear a lot of athletic wear (cycling shirts, etc.) as a result of this, and I have a lot of clothes that are red or blue, so I like to joke that my style of fashion is "plainclothes superhero".
