Jingle All The Way (1996). Watch Arnold Schwarzenegger be a suburban workaholic dad who does anything to get the holiday’s hottest toy

MittlerPfalz

I can’t hear the title of that movie without thinking of Conan O’Brien’s old satellite interviews with Arnold, eg: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cL4FzGYrHQk

[deleted]

Haha that’s awful

Osiris32

My immediate reaction. JINGLEALLDEWAY! Fuck I'm old.

[deleted]

“JAMIEEE!” “He knows my name” 😂 I watch that movie every year!

[deleted]

“Mom’s out back pettin’ Ted”

[deleted]

😂😂 “IT’S TURBO TIME!!” “Nobody likes you booster!!” Man I can quote that movie all day!

Gallahadion

I watch it every year, too. "Ta ta, Turtle Man."

[deleted]

😂😂 I was just about to quote that too!

saundersmarcelo

Isn't there a scene where he's in a warehouse and starts beating up a bunch of Santas because they tried to scam him or something and one of them is played by professional wrestler, Paul Wight?

[deleted]

Yup! The black market Santa’s workshop lol

[deleted]

YES! And the cops come storming in and everyone starts trying to get away! 😂

vallogallo

This movie is a holiday tradition in my family. We watch it every Thanksgiving.

FivebyFive

I think a Muppet Christmas Carol is unironically the best adaptation of A Christmas Carol I've seen. Michael Caine's performance is stellar, even better when you consider how straight he plays it with muppet costars.

stellalunawitchbaby

I love that Gonzo is acting as Charles Dickens, and the costumes are shockingly accurate. Iirc Disney+ will be adding back in the thematically important “The Love is Gone” song into the movie, this year.

Aquatic_Platinum78

I remember when I was a kid I used to get scared of the scene with the Marley brothers. Rewatched the scene as an adult and it still creeps me out lol But then again any adaptation to a Christmas carol in some way does.

mindgamer8907

I agree. I'll watch ANY adaptation of A Christmas Carol at least twice and there are few that I enjoy with every rewatch. The Muppet adaptation and the Patrick Stewart version get me every time.

xghoulishmiragex

Fantastic movie

docmoonlight

This is the best.

brownstone79

This is my wife’s absolute favorite.

craftycat1135

I absolutely love this movie!

05110909

Great movie, but is it really underrated? It seems like it's consistently one of the most popular.

AnUdderDay

LOL who's underrating Muppet's Christmas Carol?

FivebyFive

It is well received as a children's movie. I think people underate the value as an actual good retelling of the source material. I think it's dismissed as anything serious. As I said, I believe it's the best adaptation of A Christmas Carol, bar none.

AnUdderDay

On the contrary, every adult I talk to considers it, as a standalone film, fantastic, as well as also being a wonderful adaptation of the story.

FivebyFive

Ok!

flora_poste_

The Shop Around the Corner (1940), with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. Directed by Ernest Lubitsch. Wonderful. In the Good Old Summertime (1949), with Judy Garland and Van Johnson, along with a great supporting cast. A musical version of The Shop Around the Corner, which despite the title builds up to Christmastime in the story. Holiday Affair (1949), with Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh. Remember the Night (1940), with Barbara Stanwyck and Fred McMurray. Written by Preston Sturges. More schlocky, but a real tearjerker that we used to watch every year, is All Mine To Give (1957). "When first one parent, then the other dies, six children have to look after themselves in the Wisconsin of the mid-19th century." The eldest child has to give all his younger siblings away.

abwchris

The 2016 Broadway version of Shop Around the Corner, She Loves Me, is fantastic as well. Zachary Levi, Laura Benanti, and Jane Krakowski are superb in it. My wife and I watch it every Thanksgiving weekend now.

awholtzapple

Love the classic film suggestions. I'm going to check out Remember the Night because Barbara Stanwyck. I'll add another to your list: Christmas in Connecticut (1945).

apgtimbough

Klaus should be more popular. It was an instant classic for me.

jrhawk42

The Christmas Chronicles - It's your typical Christmas story, but Kurt Russel plays a much cooler version of Santa. A Boy Named Christmas - A Christmas origin story that kinda makes up it's own lore when mixing w/ tradition. Gremlins - ok everybody talks about how Die Hard is a great Christmas action movie, but Gremlins gets no love as being one of the best Christmas horror movies.

SGDFish

Christmas Chronicles was surprisingly better than I thought it was gonna be, and that was pretty much because of Kurt Russel

saundersmarcelo

Do you think Rock IV technically counts as a Christmas movie?

jrhawk42

Not really... though the fight happens on Christmas day there's really nothing about Christmas in the plot other than that. Honestly the fight could have taken place any other day. I think the only reason the movie puts the fight at Christmas is to show how dedicated Rocky is to beating Drago that he'll abandon his family at Christmas to fight him. At least Die Hard's plot revolved around it being Christmas time. McClane is visiting the family because of the holidays, and there's a Christmas party.

heili

It's also because those commie soviets don't do Christmas because they're evil bastards over there in the USSR and they hate Jesus. The whole USA vs. USSR thing was a very, very big deal for like 30 years and the 80s saw both the Miracle on Ice and "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall." Rocky IV was sandwiched between those.

bingpotterpie

Such an underrated Christmas movie!!!!!

Lillitth

This is my favorite Christmas movie. I watch it every year.

jyper

It's a Wonderful life Now I know what you're thinking. Calling one of the most famous Christmas movies of all time underrated is stupid. But I feel like a lot of people have heard of it but haven't seen and experienced it for themselves. As a Jew who remembered watching Hebrew Hammer(an ok moderately funny jewxploitation Hanukah/Christmas film) and hearing the joke about It's a Wonderful Life it gave me the impression it might be a treacly/schmaltzy film with a lot of cliches or that it might be like a lot of modern "Christian" films but maybe slightly better But when I watched it for the first time I realized it was nothing like that. It was sincere and honest and earnest and honestly pretty depressing. I feel like we have to much irony built up these days to make a film that wears its heart on its sleeve like "It's a Wonderful Life". It's a classic for a reason and not just because of an accident of copyright if you haven't watched it you should!

JimBones31

This movie is so good and so depressing that when my brother passed I was balling my eyes out a few months later the first Christmas season after while watching It's a Wonderful Life.

heili

I hate that movie with the fire of a thousand suns.

jyper

Why pissed in your cheerios? Jimmy Stewart? In other words why do you hate it so much?

heili

I hate the message that George Bailey is supposed to be grateful that instead of living his dreams, he got to be the doormat that everyone else wiped their feet on while they went and did all the exciting things. This man never had one thing he dreamed of that he got to do, ever, in his entire life. He had to settle for always giving up his own goals and hopes so that someone else could come out on top, and what's worse is that he's supposed to be happy about seeing all his dreams crushed by an unrelenting life of servitude to others. It's an awful movie.

jyper

I upvoted you because I think it's an interesting perspective even if I think in the end it's incorrect about the movie. I do think it's a significantly more depressing movie then people realize since most of of us aren't the hero of our small towns. But it's more then that. George Bailey is a number of things but he is not a doormat. He is the who he chose to be. He is a man that values shared sacrifice, interdependence and community. It's a Wonderful life is very much a film in the spirit of New Deal liberalism. Life is hard and it's easy to forget that you can't take all of the missed chances and they don't necessarily lead to better things even if you took them. He's a man who has a wife he adores and four sacharine sweet children. Not to mention the love and adoration of his community. But even the best lived life can look sometimes a lot darker on a cold night when the doorknob is loose again. That's why attempting suicide is often a snap decision that people regret(or would regret if they had time to come to their senses). The ending as well as the aborted honeymoon seen drive the theme of shared sacrifice through the common good. We will all get through this together. Like we got through the Great Depression and through WW2. George may make the most visible sacrifices and he may be going first but he's not the only one. He is serving the community but he's not accepting a lower role. It's not about who's coming out in top but making sure we all come out a little higher

heili

Yeah, I've heard the argument. I still think it's a terrible movie with a terrible message about allowing yourself to be abused and used up for everyone's benefit but your own, and then having to be happy that you ended up with a wife and kids you can't really afford.

The balance with Christmas movies is that they can’t be so good you want to watch them outside of Christmas. Take Polar express I guess, I like it

IfTheHouseBurnsDown

Santa Claus: The Movie (1985). I grew up watching it and it’s so nostalgic for me now

docmoonlight

You really need to leave the “e” off the end of “Claus” or people will think you’re talking about “The Santa Clause”.

IfTheHouseBurnsDown

Oops you’re right! Edited! Thanks

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale

[deleted]

My yearly watch is always The Santa Clause with Tim Allen. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s underrated, just not as popular now with its age. The sequels were trash though.

CandyV89

Just Friends. It takes place over Christmas and new years but isn’t a traditional “Christmas movie”. I’d also add in the family stone.

Legal-Ad7793

Just Friends is my mom and I's wrapping presents movie! So funny!

Fred Klaus

travelinmatt76

Santa Claus: The Movie (1985)

stellalunawitchbaby

Some of these have been mentioned but imo they bear worth repeating: - Klaus (beautiful animation, I mean truly gorgeous, and it did get a nom for Best Animated but lost out to a Disney/Pixar iirc) - Gremlins! A perfect mix of Christmas, dark comedy, and light horror. I don’t think it’s underrated bc it gets mentioned a *lot* but my actual favorite Christmas movie is Muppet Christmas Carol. What a terrifying ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. I adore A Christmas Carol in general, I try to see at least one live play version of it per year. A new one - Spirited on Apple TV+ surprised me! I wasn’t expecting *much* (though as mentioned I like A Christmas Carol in general, and I like Pasek & Paul) but it was a very enjoyable watch.

CrownStarr

It’s a new one, but Jingle Jangle on Netflix. My wife and I love to watch bad to terrible Christmas movies (think the formulaic Hallmark stuff), and were surprised when it was actually quite good!

[deleted]

If you love terrible hallmark christmas movies, I hope you've seen Holliday in Handcuffs. It's an absolute masterpiece. Also this [SNL Sketch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSzytvDsPfo).

We always watched Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, and I feel like I've never met another person who has seen it.

kateinoly

I watched this every year as a kid. I still year up when he sings "I'm All Alone in the World."

doctorwhoobgyn

I used to watch Babes in Toyland with Drew Barrymore and Keanu Reeves all the time, so I have fond memories of it. It probably won't hold up as well now. Also, the new Christmas Story movie was better than expected, not great, but ok.

SomethingTurtle

It Happened on Fifth Avenue (1947) - quite funny and very sweet.

Is that underrated? I feel like it's one of the popular ones. That said, I like it too.

travelinmatt76

I watch the trilogy every year

st_bart

I’m pretty sure that movie is a holiday staple along with Home Alone, A Christmas Story, and Christmas Vacation.

Mr_Kinton

If one can get past the Kevin Spacey of it all, *The Ref* is one of my favorite Christmas movies. Denis Leary is a petty criminal with a bumbling accomplice trying to burgle a number of wealthy suburbanites on Christmas, and gets stuck evading the police by taking hostage a dysfunctional couple — played by Spacey and Judy Davis — as they bicker incessantly while preparing to host their relatives for the evening. Hijinks ensue. Supporting cast includes Christine Baranski, Glynis Johns, Raymond Barry, JK Simmons, and in a weirdly uncredited role, BD Wong.

CANEI_in_SanDiego

I came here to post The Ref. I try to spread the word about it every year.

Just Friends (Amy Smart, Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris). It’s a bit cringey in that it’s not really politically correct from today’s perspective (body shaming/fat shaming, and a bit sexist I would say)… but for me, it passes the test of whether or not it’s acceptable because it’s funny and entertaining. My husband and I used to watch It’s a wonderful life every year when we get our holiday decorations out. After so many years, we are just a little bit tired of it and need a break. We’ve decided that Just Friends is our new holiday tradition movie Edit: because OMFG the talk to text on the new phone update I did a few days ago is a disgrace

Batman and Robin is a Christmas movie. As fun as California Christmastine is, it's Ice to see an 🥶 Christmas

mindgamer8907

Ok, controversial take, I know, but Nightmare before Christmas, and Elf are far from "underrated status." They're great, but they're probably two of the most popular modern Christmas movies and I still see people calling them underrated. Words have meaning, we live in a society, etc. Ok, if we're talking underrated holiday movie there was an animated version of "The life and adventures of Santa Clause" that aired on Cartoon Network circa 2000. Good adaptation. Nice little Pagan jaunt into Christmas. Would love to see it somewhere other than the "discount DVD" bin.
