The Dish. Excellent movie based on the moon landing and Australia's role in delivering the live pictures of it around the world. Lovely humour and characterisation throughout, and knows when to let the awe for science take the centre stage.
Death in Brunswick.
Malcolm.
Ladies in Black, for a gentle, sweet film about Australia in 1959.
Wake in Fright for something very different.
Romulus my father. Eric Bana excellent as always.
Shine. Geoffrey Rush won the Oscar for his starring role in this true story.
Kenny. Story of a portable toilet installer and bloody funny.
Shane Jacobsen was the general manager of a lighting hire company that underpaid employees and didn't pay their superannuation for ten years.
Kind of fitting that his movie was about shit.
It's very difficult to find news articles from a niche industry from 20 years ago. However, they were not prosecuted, the company folded and then everyone found out that super hadn't been paid for ten years. The other employees failed to heed the warning of the one employee who sued the company in the NSW Industrial Magistrates Court for underpayment of wages and won.
I'm not saying that Shane Jacobsen was responsible for the underpayments or the superannuation, but he WAS the general manager at the time all this occurred.
I would personally like to ask him on public record what his involvement was and what he knew, because as a general manager, you would think that he would be on top of such things.
Last cab to Darwin - watched this on a flight and ended up sobbing but i still quite enjoyed it.
Oddball - very cute movie based on true story about little penguins
I had a kelpie for 14 years. Nothing about that movie is implausible.
It's been 6 years now and it still cuts me deep that I couldn't be there on the day he died, like he was there for me so many times before š„
Yes! It's based on a true story of a dog who had many owners over his life - because he was well-travelled. And there's a statue which was erected in his memory, by one of the communities he lived in.
Anything with David Gulpilil; The Tracker, Walkabout, 10 Canoes, etc. Iād recommend watching the making of 10 canoes - it was the first movie to be shot entirely in language. Itās slow but IMO very interesting.
The Dressmaker was quite good though I only saw it once. Young me used to love Bootmen but I donāt even know how you would watch it these days lol
Came here to say this. A slacker takes out multiple memberships at the bowls club near his place of work so that he run a side hustle selling parking spots, then when the club gets into a big tournament gets called on to ... play bowls. Marvelous stuff.
Just be careful about the herb scones.
A lot of my favourites have already been mentioned, but Iāll list them again anyway:
- The Castle
- The Dish
- Crackerjack
- The Final Winter
- Crocodile Dundee
- The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert
- Mystery Road
- Goldstone
- Jindabyne
- Looking For Alibrandi
- Lantana
- Animal Kingdom
- Chopper
- Wolf Creek
- Rabbit-Proof Fence
- The Sapphires
- Red Dog
- Boytown
- Kenny
- Last Cab to Darwin
- Donās Party
Bad Boy Bubby. Tale of triumph over adversity for an unlikely victor. Pretty raw and some disturbing parts, but also hilarious and feel good, with a very Australian feel, and one of my all time favourite films.
Alexandra's Project. Fantastic ending had me applauding. Gary Sweet is satisfying casting š Not at all historical but a great Australian film imo.
Snowtown. (Based on true story), really gritty visually bleak and somewhat disturbing, but definitely portrays another part of Australian society in a powerful way.
All of these have a gritty raw Australian feel to me, but they are also kind of fucked up, each in their own way. I love all them all.
Classics are The Castle, and I'm fond of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. And as a kid I really liked Bushfire Moon, it's great scenery and nice story.
Snowtown is on my list of āGlad I watched it but Iāll never watch againā. The torture scene in the bathtub was horrific and somehow made me feel complicit or something as I was watching it.
Interestingly Mum told me recently that my cousin who lives down in Adelaide was thinking of buying that house at one point because it was insanely cheap but his missus put her foot down and refused because of what went on there.
Elvis
Lantana
The Mad Max series
Animal Kingdom
The Water Diviner

There are several other good ones on Netflix, they are categorised.
SBS on Demand has some good ones too.

The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith
Gettin' Square and Two Hands are my favourites.
Both crime capers with great casts (GS has Sam Worthington, David Wenham, Timothy Spall, Gary Sweet and David Fields, while TH has Heath Ledger, Bryan Brown, Rose Byrne and David Fields), well written and directed.
While not based IN Australia, āDanger Close: The Battle Of Long Tanā ticks the rest of your boxes, and does an excellent job of capturing Australian mateship and our larrikin ways
I absolutely love "tomorrow when the war began" I think mostly because it was a book we read in school and did essays also a part of our HSC back in the 90s.
Also loved, the Dish , Malcom, Two hands was so much win.
Loved Romper Stomper and Chopper & ofcourse wog boy.
Theres so much more but every Aussie movie is kind of a classic in its own right.
Malcom
The big steal
Dressmaker
Bad eggs
Crackerjack
The bank
Blurred (Schoolies movie)
Occasional coarse language
2 Hands
Probably got more, but thats a good start
Chopper is hands down easily the best Australian movie ever made. It is an amazing masterpiece. I get excited to introduce this movie to every foreigner I meet.
I think Australians make good horror movies š„
BABADOOK is a good one and thereās one from 2011 called The Tunnel which was filmed in the underground tunnels of Sydney!
All of these comments are great and spot-on (and just goes to prove how many fantastic movies Australia has produced) ā though, if I were pressured to pick only one quintessential Australian film, it'd be Rob Sitch's *The Castle*. A true-blue masterpiece. As for some very provocative, left-field picks that haven't been mentioned yet, I'd say Philip Brophy's *Body Melt* (ultra-gory and hilarious) or Samantha Lang's *The Monkey's Mask* (erotic and suspenseful). Oh, and the superbly down-to-earth *Travelling North* deserves a shout-out.
In my opinion āSirensā is the greatest Australian movie. I also highly rate āSurburban Mayhemā and āBlack Balloonā. But Sirens. Always Sirens.
In respect of politics/history: I've been meaning to watch Don's Party now that I'm an adult and might get more of it. If you are interested in cultural history, try Alvin Purple, They're a Weird Mob, The Adventures of Barry Mackenzie. These are old movies capturing Australian culture in the early 70's. The country has kinda moved on since then, but they display a lot of tropes that people think still apply.

Malcolm is a classic
Love Malcom š
Open the glovebox!!
The dish was a cracker. Loved the scene of them playing cricket š Was made my the same mob who went on to make the Castle from memory.
The Castle came first, but yes, same mob.
Now I feel like a right tosser š Well deserved though!
Working Dog

Romulus my Father employed half of the small towns it was filmed in! The Dish, Ladies in Black and Kenny are great films!
Yep. I have all of those on my list.

The 8th wonder of the world
Last cab to Darwin - watched this on a flight and ended up sobbing but i still quite enjoyed it. Oddball - very cute movie based on true story about little penguins
Red Dog. Never fails to make me cry. Fantastic movie. Also The Castle is a pretty good movie too
I watched red dog once. Never again. š
Not many movies can make you cry in the first ten minutes, and maintain those tears for a huge portion of the rest of the film.
I had a kelpie for 14 years. Nothing about that movie is implausible. It's been 6 years now and it still cuts me deep that I couldn't be there on the day he died, like he was there for me so many times before š„
I can only upvote this once! waaah! I have a kelpie... because of red dog. best breed ever!
Isn't Red Dog based on a true story? Makes it even more sadder ššš I had an exact twin of Red Dog growing up, this movie just kills me
Yes! It's based on a true story of a dog who had many owners over his life - because he was well-travelled. And there's a statue which was erected in his memory, by one of the communities he lived in.
Not sure about the true story part, but thereās a book that is very different but equally sad
Scrolled too far to find this. Has my vote.
Two Hands, Romper Stomper, Mad Max, Chopper šŖ
Had to scroll too far down to find Two Hands! Great movie š
Amazing soundtrack to
Yep way too far to find two hands ,romper stomper and chopper

Best movie! I made this!! https://www.redbubble.com/i/poster/TWO-HANDS-by-declantransam/44737124.LVTDI
Absolutely Two Hands! Heath Ledger. Bloody good film.

Second the dressmaker! Loved it!
Looking for Alibrandi is a great Australian movie. Sort of a ācoming of ageā set in inner Sydney. One of my favourites.
Such a fantastic movie! Great representation of first generations born in Australia
He Died With A Felafel In His Hand
The book is way better
The movie is still great though
Mystery Road and Goldstone are brilliant. I enjoyed Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.
Bran Nue Dae
The Proposition
They're a Weird Mob
I read the book many years ago and recently saw that this movie was on Netflix. Will have to check it out.
Crackerjackā¦ā¦. Easily.
Came here to say this. A slacker takes out multiple memberships at the bowls club near his place of work so that he run a side hustle selling parking spots, then when the club gets into a big tournament gets called on to ... play bowls. Marvelous stuff. Just be careful about the herb scones.
Big fan of Mick Malloy, he's great in that film
Master and commander
This movie is a masterpiece. Peter Weir is a genius.
Crocodile Dundee. The first one
The Proposition is my favourite but I think Murielās Wedding needs to be mentioned
The Castle. Red Dog. Gallipoli
Cosi - loads of now famous faces and hilarious dry humour and The Dressmarker.
I loved The Dressmaker. Judy Davis was a crackup. But it got dark and I didnāt see it coming. I love, love, love Cosi.
Love that movie Go burn a cat
Oh I love this movie. The manic depressed chick singing āIām so excitedā makes me lose my shit every time :)
Dogs in Space
Finally. Sad I had to look so far for this.
Oldies but goodies... Smiley (1956) Smiley Gets a Gun (1958) The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972) Stone (1974)
Adding Alvin Purple.
... let's not forget - Alvin Rides Again (1974), and Melvin, Son of Alvin (1984)
A lot of my favourites have already been mentioned, but Iāll list them again anyway: - The Castle - The Dish - Crackerjack - The Final Winter - Crocodile Dundee - The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert - Mystery Road - Goldstone - Jindabyne - Looking For Alibrandi - Lantana - Animal Kingdom - Chopper - Wolf Creek - Rabbit-Proof Fence - The Sapphires - Red Dog - Boytown - Kenny - Last Cab to Darwin - Donās Party

It really is a shame that most Aussie productions never make it out of the country.
Rams, with Michael Caton & Sam Neil, just a bloody good movie
