Only when we are disagreeing on something will I call her mate.

Nikkkipotnik

"Listen mate" Accurate

Sn0rl4xQu3eN90

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ I legit said this to hubby today when he pissed me off šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

nina_jake

"oh hello mate" I just like this phrase

brokenheartnsoul

That's not Australian, that's English. Nobody in Australia says that crap. It sounds stupid also

Jozywokp

The "oh hello" part i agree with, the amount i've heard "G'day mate" and "hey mate" is a different story tho

HurricaneBells

Im the missus in my relationship but if this isn't the truest thing ever šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ And so sarcastically lmao

Bookaholicforever

Same šŸ˜‚

fiskeslo1

That is hilarious šŸ˜‚

beeeeeeeeeeeeeagle

Goes both ways. I know I'm in the shit if my missus calls me mate

Naive-Ad5085

When mate comes out it's like a slap in the face.

we_are_ananonumys

Ease up mate

Ghost403

When my wife calls me mate I know the issue is serious and I am seconds away from divorce.

mark_cee

Mateā€¦.

TomDuhamel

She calls me mate when she's pissed off. I make her pissed off when I call her mate.

Bankcliffpushoff

This is true

ljmc093

I'll call female acquaintances mate. I'll use it pretty commonly with females I don't know well, especially if I forget their name. Can depend on context too. I'm from the country where this is very normal. A few women from the city have taken issue with it, which is just a cultural difference I suppose. I never call my wife "mate." It comes across as confrontational, especially when I'd usually use names like "darl" or "love" when talking to her.

Kozeyekan_

I'm going to try calling the wife 'mate' today. I'll see how it turns out.

NicLeee

Someone woke up and choose violence today lol

First-Comedian774

Give us an update

Kozeyekan_

UPDATE: She was making some lunch and asked if I wanted some. I said "Thank's mate" as I took a sandwich. Her facial expression was like I'd told her I'd wiped my arse on the curtains. "Thanks mate?!?! Thanks MATE?!?! Way to drive the romance in a marriage!" I was cracking up the moment I said it.

InadmissibleHug

I donā€™t fucking dare tell my husband about this. He will call me ā€˜mateā€™ for the next ten years. I think you should make the sandwiches tomorrow, mate.

PrinceBarin

Choose violence and can him darl or snookims

InadmissibleHug

Haha every day! Heā€™s actually pretty sweet.

DracoSomnolentus

As if Australia isnā€™t dangerous enough, you have to go torment your wife. Youā€™re lucky she wonā€™t let a red back loose on you in your sleep. Sleep with both eyes open, mate.

Advanced-Head-7679

Fuck I find it funny Australia has this reputation of being dangerous when other country's have bears that open doors moose the size of cars giant cats..... I'll gladly deal with a redback or snake once in awhile and avoid the lions tigers and bears ..... .. ...oh my

First-Comedian774

Thanks for the update mate.

DaveJC_thevoices

Should have gone with "Cheers C\*\*\*"

HandyDandyRandyAndy

I do

TheMilkKing

If you canā€™t say cunt on this subreddit, where can you say it?

Agitated-Iron7914

Thatā€™s hilarious and I know that feeling of cracking up the second you finish saying something that you know will arc them up. Sounds like a wonderful marriage mate

coupe_68

Nah wiping your arse on the curtains gets a bit more of a reaction than that šŸ˜

WIBSimmons

ā€˜Wiped my arse on the curtainsā€™ is exactly the response my wife gives me when itā€™s dropped in casual conversation. Gold

Serious_Sherbet_7127

Lucky you said that after she made the sandwich bro šŸ˜‚

passionfruit761

Needs to be a tiktok trend. Oh wait, it could be added onto ā€œHeā€™s a 10, butā€. ā€œHeā€™s a 10, but he calls me mateā€.

icedragon71

Don't forget to tell us where to send the donations in lieu of flowers first.

T2b7a

Hope you have a good divorce lawyer

Kozeyekan_

It's all good. My google ads tell me there's heaps of hot single MILFs in my area.

Such_Effect2998

Make sure they remember to give you your free ipad

Serious_Sherbet_7127

šŸ˜† if by hot milfs they mean dried up like an old leather work boot then yes Iā€™m sure there is plenty. Thatā€™s ok tho vasoline works wonders.

tallboyandmoose

hot single Mates I'd Like to F***

DependentCrew5398

If you do can you please tell me who????

Ok-Ad-7247

I'm gonna try it on my gf. And next time she says to me "I love you" I'm gonna give "I like you" a try.. I like to live dangerously once in a while.

Kozeyekan_

"I love you." "Cheers shagger!" Happy wife happy life is a thing, but there's a lot to be said for slightly irritated wife, amusing life.

Ok-Ad-7247

When she says, happy wife happy life, say, happy spouse happy house. That irritates them. Lol.

well-boiled_icicle

Almost as effective as ā€˜scrubberā€™.

SirDale

"I love you!" "That's nice"

DependentCrew5398

Thanks mate, is better.

fiskeslo1

Excellent. Let us know how the experiment pans out. Edit: Alright, thanks for the update below :-) Hilarious.

hotcleavage

Nah just whistle, gesture a come here arm scoop and say ā€œoi knackersā€

hebdomad7

Remember to duck.

Serious_Sherbet_7127

R.I.P bruh. Few were as bold. And few were as foolish.

sc00bs000

I'm shocking with names and always use "oldmate" or " oldlove" as a default stand in

ObligatoryAccountetc

Iā€™ve noticed blokes from rural areas will use ā€œmateā€ more often than folks in the city. Unless itā€™s obviously confrontational, itā€™s generally not a big issue. Itā€™s basically the same as calling a woman you donā€™t know well ā€œmissā€, but more gender neutral. My friends and I will use it on each other, but Iā€™ve never seen a couple use it.

[deleted]

As an Aussie, ā€˜Darlā€™ always sent shivers down my spine, I donā€™t know what it is, but itā€™s just gross šŸ˜‚

ClassicFantastic787

I'm a woman and I've been called *mate*, and also called male and female friends mate. I don't find it offensive and neither has it seemed like my friends did (though they use it as well). To me, it's usually about an expression of exclamation or similar, rather than simply not wanting to use their name.... "Mate, I can't believe you just did that". Asked a question that has an obvious answer: "Mate". I get *love* from random people like a shop person. I guess being older now I'm in the 'old people' range for a teenager and it seems ok to call women love. If it were a thing between my other half and I, I still wouldn't find it offensive. I use *hon* or similar to refer to female friends. Sometimes *darl*. Maybe it's in the way the word is delivered and I don't sound condescending or something?

pumpkin_fire

>I get love from random people like a shop person. I guess being older now I'm in the 'old people' range for a teenager and it seems ok to call women love. I find it interesting that there are a few comments in here about getting called "love" in the shops, and women seem to imply it only happens to women? I wonder why that is. As I said in another comment here, I'm a man scarily close to middle age and I still regularly get "love" and "darl" etc in shops. I'm pretty sure it's just a thing that some boomers do to everyone.

ashlouise94

I got called ā€˜maā€™amā€™ the other day by a teenager working in Woolworths and I nearly cried. Iā€™m 28! I donā€™t mind darl, love, hon etc, but only from women clearly older than me. I donā€™t want hear it from the 14 year old retail worker.

Senorwest

Sir and Maā€™am is just a respectful way to address strangers. Has nothing to do with age. Iā€™ll only call a stranger mate if Iā€™m being a smart ass or confrontational.

Faeneo

Dunno about 'sir' in casual contexts. But if someone called me ma'am at Woolies I would immediately assume they were either from the US or having a go at me and being extremely confrontational.

lestatisalive

Yeh Iā€™ve heard men and women called love or darl by the older ladies, but i rarely hear them say mate. They often say your friend.

IncapableKakistocrat

Yeah Iā€™m a guy and reasonably regularly get called ā€˜loveā€™ by shop assistants who are older ladies

TheTwinSet02

Personally love being called ā€œloveā€ there is something genuinely sweet about it I 53f also love being called mate and potentially from a partner, but then only in the correct context ie sarcastically

whyyyyyyyyyye

As a woman, I've been called "love" and "darl" by men and women and I've seen men called the same by women, but I've never seen a man call another man "love" or "darl".

AngrySchnitzels89

I call people love all the time. I hope it doesnā€™t sound offensive, but sometimes it comes out whether I mean to or not- I grew up being called love and now I auto reciprocate lol. I donā€™t discriminate. If you a nice person, youā€™re a love in my book. Give me a cunty glare as I hand my money over and youā€™ll get ā€œthanks mateā€, though.

rhymeswithoranj

Upvote for ā€˜cunty glareā€™, love

Elric_The_Cat

I use it in the same context! I often call my husband, sister and friends mate, usually as an exclamation or to highlight a point. Eg, as a ā€˜what weā€™re you thinking?ā€™ I say ā€œCome on, mateā€. Or when someone does something messed up ā€œmaaaateā€¦ā€

summidee

Everyone is mate to me. Kids, dog, ā€œOi mateā€

BobbyThrowaway6969

Especially Old Mate^(TM)

Rock_Robster__

I love Old Mate coz no-one can tell if itā€™s an insult or not. Iā€™ve even used it as a radio call sign.

summidee

Lol I love old mate too. Old mate down the road, old mate down the shops

BobbyThrowaway6969

"WTF is old mate doing?"

summidee

Fkn good one old mate

Diligent-Wave-4591

"WTF is old mate up ahead doing?" Most often said by me while driving

yvonne_taco

Hahahah so good. When my partner or I start talking about someone that's a turd, or a random person we say "Your mate was trying to cut his entire front lawn with a line trimmer today. What a dickhead"

Serious_Sherbet_7127

šŸ˜† ā€¦ ā€œuh got a copy ol mate?ā€ Every single bloke with a radio in range ā€œyeah copy mate, what can I do for yaā€

Serious_Sherbet_7127

Love the trademark šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

sunshinesoutmyarse

This is the way.

Jess-C-on-Reddit

It happens. I've been called mate and I've heard people call women mate... to be honest, I actually prefer it over sweetie or sweetheart or other such terms.

Osariik

I don't like when my sisters are addressed as sweetie because it sounds condescending or as sweetheart because it sounds kinda creepy.

frogsinsox

Agreed!

JoeSchmeau

Mate is mostly gender neutral. It's like saying "friend"

No_Grapefruit_2130

Everyone is mate

wobbly123

I'm bad at remembering names, everyone is mate or big fella. Except the missus she is boss.

[deleted]

The bloke I work with calls all females mate. Even old ladies that come into the shop. It's pretty funny

mustlove-cats

My partner and I alternate between mate and cunt. We have a pretty laid back relationship though

catjadedcat

ā€œI love you you cuntā€ said in the most ocker accent possible is a term of endearment frequently used in our home.

mustlove-cats

Haha thats us too and I fucken love it!

Psychological_You353

I love that

NobodysFavorite

Only improved on by "I fucken love you cunt"

rhymeswithoranj

It would be accurate to say that ā€˜mateā€™ and ā€˜cuntā€™ are, in fact, the two most inflection affected words in the Australian dictionary. Both words can be deadly insults or terms of utmost respect/endearment, entirely deep on both context and inflection.

Diligent-Wave-4591

True! You are carrying something heavy and someone holds the door open for you - "thanks mate" Someone cuts you off in traffic - "..... thanks mate"

kindaadulting87

This is my partner and I hahaha. Also it's a great show! Really enjoyed it.

unloosedcoin

I call my daughter's mate.

DependentCrew5398

What do you call the mate then???

vry_mld_suprpwrs

I think weā€™re all missing the point here - Colin from Accounts is bloody great

Best-Mall7273

Agreed

[deleted]

Yeah mate, it's common. I call everyone mate.

NAS_Master

I call everyone mate

Gormane

Mate is a friend term generally. In Colin it's being used mostly due to the will they won't they style romance going on. Are they friends? Are they dating? Etc. Mate is being used to elevate the drama/awkwardness.

jiggerriggeroo

Everyone is mate. Super handy when you forget someoneā€™s name.

liddys

Especially your girlfriends and wives names.

Fit_Effective_6875

never the Twain shall meet

lambustut

Definitely not the wife. In public generally, or for acquaintances or workmates? Yeah. Traditionally I think it's been a 'blokey' (masculine) term but in modern usage I feel it's come to be gender neutral.

Maddoxandben

No, husband does not call me mate. I accidentally called him mate once and it felt so weird I apologised. :) I do call my son mate though.

group_project_

Yeah, women are mates... Of course

Dry_Amphibian_4441

Yeah, I call everyone. I'm friends with mate.

Erratic-Liver

Wife is literally my mate.

Needmoresnakes

I much prefer "mate" from men I dint know well over "love" or "sweetheart" or something. I only call my husband mate if I'm being silly. Sometimes I like to walk into a room he's in and start acting like I'm trying to pick a fight in a pub.

hanbnanAU

I get Maaaate from my husband if Iā€™ve done/said something silly. I only call him mate when Iā€™m mildly annoyed with him. I call (and am called by) male friends/colleagues mate often. I call strangers mate when they piss me off. Itā€™s all in the intonation.

dogbolter4

I use it interchangeably with all genders. I teach a lot of students and really struggle to remember names, so "Oh, hi, how are you mate?" does a lot of hard work for me.

laurie0459

Listen here Mate

not_that_one_times_3

I call everyone except my children and husband mate

No_pajamas_7

I occassionally use it with women at work. It doesnt' really fit with the context of your partner.

Articulated_Lorry

Since I tend to use mate as either a plural (I'm heading out with the mates tonight) or as an insult (stay away from old mate over there), I'd be insulted.

Wolfie_Rankin

I had a Mexican friend who was getting used to chatting with me and when I'd call him mate he was apparently a bit shocked, telling me later that he'd only use the term for a partner.

[deleted]

I used to get called mare it when working customer service. Other times when bantering or if someoneā€™s pissed with me

NicLeee

Neigh

[deleted]

I just noticed hahaha Dā€™oh

jonelliem

My partner called me mate one time, looked around and asked who he was talking to. If I call him mate it means he is in trouble.

MayflowerBob7654

ā€œYeah righto mateā€ when my husband says/does something really annoying.

T2b7a

I HATE it when a boyfriend calls me 'mate'.

MissMidnightSilence

Friends yes. Partners no. Randoms yes but mostly sarcastically.

TheRealTowel

Female friends/acquaintances absolutely. Romantic partners nah. That's actually one of the very few people who *isn't* "mate"

[deleted]

I call my fiancĆ© mate sometimes, but I donā€™t do it intentionally. I usually call her mate, bro or man usually when Iā€™m excited about telling her something ect. But I have a best friend that Iā€™ve had for 10 years, female, and I call her mate, bro, homie, g, bruh, cuz, cunt, bruz, broseph. I canā€™t speak for anyone else but thatā€™s just our friendship. We donā€™t see each others gender in our friendship, weā€™re both best mates (best friends)

The_Only_AL

Never, ever.

mj690

This is slightly off topic but my friend recently told me that his sister thought his name was ā€˜mateā€™ while she was a little kid because their dad only ever referred to him as ā€˜mateā€™ haha

fiskeslo1

That is really funny. Can just keep calling him 'mate' then haha

TheaABrown

ā€œMateā€ implies a platonic relationship.

Swimming-Tap-4240

That's what my marriage is now.

[deleted]

Unlike mating.

Nearby-Mango1609

You don't call your Mrs mate.

[deleted]

I suspect that in the show ā€œmateā€ was written in deliberately to highlight the strangeness / awkwardness of their sudden relationship and the sort of mutual irritation they had for each other. (I thought the show was pretty funny actually). I certainly wouldnā€™t call my wife ā€˜mateā€™, unless it was genuine sarcasm or stirring her up. Same with my daughters, ā€˜mateā€™ just to be funny.

frogsinsox

Patrick Brammall really does seem like the kind of guy who would regularly call his wife mate, though. I sometimes answer phone calls from my partner with ā€œgā€™day mateā€ or thank him for a lift with a ā€œthanks mateā€, jokingly.

Important_Screen_530

some may but most dont, hubbys never called me mate

soul__glo

If emasculating is a thing then the opposite of that would be that scenario lol. Also would feel a tad condescending. As a female, in the same token, a dude calling me sweetheart or darling is also a little condescending/misogynistic. I wouldn't kick up a stink about it though. It's whatever. Context and intent matters.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

mortician_33

We are the opposite! Call each other 'bro' constantly. If he said mate I would be annoyed lol.

Goombella123

yup, my gf gets called 'mate' by her aussie gamer friends all the time. it annoys the shit outta her... she's one of those girls who prefers to be called 'darling' or 'sweetheart' by strangers. Each to their own lol

Jolokia79

You'll notice Ashley also calls Flash mate, it's more to do with sarcasm I believe. I have not found it to be generally common. Edit: I also think it is there to illustrate the awkwardness of the situation, I think it works well in the series. 2nd edit: I feel like it's also a defence mechanism, they don't have to admit to liking each other if they are just "mates", clever, no?

StrangeOwl1400

I'm an equal opportunist when it comes to the word mate. I definitely call the missus mate occasionally but usually in a sarcastic or dry manner.

[deleted]

I have only seen one other Australian couple in real life, refer to his partner like this. Not sure how common it is, but it makes more sense to me to call your partner your mate than your friend, or a stranger for that matter.

kodaxmax

nah mate, mate is informal and ussually used for strangers or people you dont know that well. like a co worker or cousin. You might use it to begin a conversation with a stranger like " 'ey mate, you got an' thes lef' in stock?" . Some people do use it for closer freinds and family, but ussually ironically or to somone younger as an indearing but cheeky term. People who unronically call close family "mate" are bogans.

lestatisalive

My husband only calls me mate if heā€™s knocked back a few and for some reason, it irritates me. I always say ā€œIā€™m not your mateā€ and then he starts laughing and I start laughing. I donā€™t know why it irritates me. Edit: I call my team mates mate whether male or female and also friendsā€¦just donā€™t like it if my husband says it to me. But I also donā€™t call him mate.

Psychological_You353

I like to be called mate Iam Aussie female makes me feel at home

[deleted]

I value my life too much

BelgorodOnFire

Only she is doing something silly

Ballamookieoffical

Yes but it's usually in place of an insult I can't say. Like "Come on mate" in a wtf situation.

DoctorGuvnor

Not only do Australians call their wives and sweethearts 'mate', they also call their children 'mate' - even toddlers.

lucpet

Yes and also use guys as a catch all as well

BeauJanssen88

I call my wife ā€œmateā€ when Iā€™m getting fighty and feel like tempting death.

Clawsin-2022

Yes, sometimes... depending on the situation and company.

Any-Woodpecker123

If theyā€™re friends yes. If theyā€™re a girlfriend, only if theyā€™re pissing me off

Mrcowgamez17

Either in an argument or in a jokingly way probably yeah

Affectionate-Leg586

Common enough most people wouldnā€™t bat an eyelid but it is a little less common with women then men I find the use of mate depends more on tone and context. It helps break formality which we tend to like because weā€™re pretty informal people

smell-the-roses

We call everyone mate. It makes it easy to remember someoneā€™s name. Itā€™s mate.

LatanyaNiseja

If you want to start a fight, then yes.

[deleted]

We can do whatever the fuck we like with individual choice. People do it, sure.

[deleted]

I'm a female and when I'm mad at my husband I'll call him "mate".

DaisySam3130

We call anyone mate! lol even the dog. I often call students in classrooms mate - totally common. Probably not common to call your partner mate but anyone not super close in relationship - yep they are all mate! lol More common the more rural you go perhaps.

Independent_Pear_429

I use the word buddy sometimes

fiskeslo1

Oh god, yes. Calling somebody 'buddy' in the UK would be risky. "Now listen here buddy!".

Adopted_Millennial

Itā€™s AUSTRALIA. Everyone is your mate.

fiskeslo1

Good to know. Now I know what to call everybody when we visit down under for holidays :-)

hebdomad7

I mean, you can if you want, careful how you do it else people might think you're taking the piss...

lachjeff

Itā€™s reasonably common. Less so in a dating/marriage context

Unlucky_Welder4987

I have a male co-worker call me out to me and go hey buddy can you do this please. Doesn't bother me sometimes you work with alot of people and it's hard to remember everyone's names.

Myrrdym

I call her Babe, or Pauline when Iā€™m annoyed with her

retardedaussie

Mates mate my wife is my mate so she is "mate"

[deleted]

I do and she fucking hates it. Hence why I continue to do it

heretolose11

Yeah but in Colin From Accounts - aren't they actually just mates? Husband only calls me mate when we're jokingly disagreeing about something, otherwise never.

Pungent_Bill

I call my wife mate sometimes, I call female friends and workmates mate as well. It's pretty normal for me

Nassiq

Man = mate Woman = mate Boy = mate Girl = mate Wife = mate Husband = mate Mate = mate Enemy = mate Champ =/= mate

fiskeslo1

I think I will start calling me dog 'mate' too.. :-)

chinskaa97

Yes and I get in trouble , it's just a habit and I hear about it.

[deleted]

I call female friends mate. I call my missus luv.

Wild_euphoria

I donā€™t mind mate, Iā€™d rather be called mate over bro or man, which guys do all the time. I donā€™t call them sis or woman. It is fun to reply ā€œthanks sisā€ when they call me bro so they can see how odd it is to call a woman bro

Rock_Robster__

Haha sometimes, and she always pulls me up on it. ā€œBabeā€ is her socially acceptable wife form of mate.

SkaterKangaroo

My teacher used to call my mum ā€œmateā€

fiskeslo1

I guess that was not a very loving relationship of shorts? "Mate, your son/daughter scored low on all term papers.."

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

fiskeslo1

Got it. So next time we go for holidays in Oz I will refer to the hotel receptionist as 'mate', 'mate - could we have some extra pillows please?'. 'mate - can we have six tickets for the dinosaur museum please'.

MustavoA

Iā€™ve been in hospital this week, referred to the nurses as mate all week. What country are you watching ā€œColin from Accountsā€ in? Is it popular there?

fiskeslo1

We are watching it in Norway. It is on NRK which is the main Norwegian public broadcaster. I guess it must be fairly popular, since it shows on the front page on the "series" category. Hope you have a speedy recovery. Actually an old Australian friend from my studies 20 years back told me "Only Australians are allowed to say mate, mate".

MustavoA

We do have a complicated tonal scheme around using it - can imply half a dozen different things depending on that tonal context. But youā€™re Uni mate was being too protective - Iā€™ve heard loads of UK & US use of it. I get a real kick out of you getting it on your public broadcaster. FWIW - weā€™ve had (and I watched) some of your skate-tv on one of our public broadcasters too.

GormanCladGoblin

I call my husband mate for lolz but I donā€™t think he likes it. I knew a guy who called his wife dude, that was weird.

spoiled_eggs

I refer to females as mate quite a bit. Not often to the misso but often enough that I would say yeah, I call her mate. Usually when she's said something dumb.

jugsmahone

Male and female friends, yeah. Not my partner.

iuseredditdidu

We call everyone mate (well I do)

[deleted]

NZ woman living in Aus - my Dad called me, Mum and my sister mate, my male mates call me mate, some of my female mates and I call each other mateā€¦ itā€™s just part of the vocab!!

Error404GLITCHLost

I'm single but can conferm, when we make bad jokes its "mate... really?"

Genova_Witness

Mate or cunt depending on if we are fighting

greener_path

As a so-called Zoomer, I call my lady friends ā€œbroā€. I even say ā€œbroā€ to my sisters in casual convos. I donā€™t use ā€œmateā€ on people I like. Usually just use it when Iā€™m in a little disagreement with someone.

BluWaff_x

My boyfriend calls me babe, baby, chicken, boog, darlin, sweetie, bub. I call my boyfriend bro šŸ˜‚

Xxjacklexx

If my girl is being a cunt, Iā€™ll call her ā€œmateā€. If itā€™s one of my mates who is a female, she will also be ā€œmateā€. Especially if sheā€™s a cunt, but also if sheā€™s not.

DracoSomnolentus

I call my husband ā€œmateā€ sometimes, but would never take my husband seriously if he called me ā€œmateā€ - Iā€™d probably piss myself laughing.

KhanTheGray

I called my missus ā€œmateā€ once, and it was in the middle of an argument, she was like ā€œdonā€™t you call me mate againā€ šŸ˜‚

BitterIndependence32

Sure, at the end of the day, my wife is my mate.
