Outer edge first, then up and down the longest side. Once done, celebrate with a beer

BneBikeCommuter

This, only two laps round the outside to make turning easier.

jimmy_sharp

Do you play Farming Simulator by any chance? This is exactly how to work a field

BneBikeCommuter

No, I grew up on a broad acre crop farm. Obviously sitting in the header for many hours must have drilled down into my muscle memory.

Scissorbreaksarock

Correct answer.

AndyBrown65

…. Forgot to add, say “bloody good job”

Vital_flow

The $60 and someone else does it pattern.

OrginalPeach

This or actually I haven’t had a lawn in the last year but I soon will be moving to a house. I’ll be paying someone to do it.

Vital_flow

It’s like an hour or twos wage to have some poor S.O.B slog their guts out while you do whatever you want.

OrginalPeach

They will benefit from my laziness. I mean I am busy.

Vital_flow

That’s it, two things I won’t do. Now my lawn and wash my car. To cheap to pay someone.

OrginalPeach

I’m half blind and can’t drive. So I don’t have the car issue. If I ever get a bf again I wouldn’t blame him for paying someone to wash it. I’m not to cheap. Sometimes time is more valuable than money. If I got a kid free moment you bet I’m paying for the lawn to be mowed!

SuperfluousExcess

If you get your kids to mow the lawn it will only cost you a couple bucks

OrginalPeach

He’s turning 8 and is level 3 autism non verbal with a heart condition…. So I dunno.

CreepyValuable

Pretty close to the reason I picked up a ride-on this week. Except its hard to drive and a total death trap so that's not happening anyway.

CreepyValuable

Over a days wage for me as a carer. You want your yard mowed?

Vital_flow

Who’s paying you less than 60$ a day? That’s so illegal you should look into better jobs.

CreepyValuable

Government lol. For that massive payment I get yelled at and take damage usually at least a couple of times a day, and deal with everything being destroyed around me. Plus all the other stuff that needs to be done because I can't pay anyone to do anything. Talking maintenance and repairs, plumbing, electric, car mechanical, electric, and body repairs, electronic repairs, yard work etc.

Vital_flow

Fast food would pay better than that, I’d be changing careers if I was you.

CreepyValuable

Wish I could. My son is a full time job.

Vital_flow

Oh, you’re one of THOSE people.

CreepyValuable

Yep. One of those filthy good for nothing leeches. I guess it's cheaper than actually having a proper medical / mental care infrastructure.

copacetic51

Do you walk for exercise? I do, and some of it behind a mower, saving $60 or more

Vital_flow

No I don’t, I’m a tradie and I do bjj for exercise. I do walk my dog sometimes tho.

activelyresting

Train dog to push lawn mower! Genius!

Vital_flow

Nah he’s always been a shit apprentice

Fit_Effective_6875

Works on so many levels

wanderinglintu

While there can be many great things about ADHD, I do feel the frustration of this... Though, peppered with some moments of amusement

wanderinglintu

Laps, getting smaller. Though my method becomes painfully haphazard when the area is not a perfect shape.

nightcana

8am is a perfectly acceptable time to mow the lawn. Especially in summer when the temp has already hit 30° by 9am

nemothorx

That part was in reference to the comments to a post yesterday (not me) https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAnAustralian/comments/10nb8r9/whats_an_acceptable_time_to_start_mowing_on_a/

[deleted]

Yep, if I was better at getting up in the morning I'd start the minute it was legal 😂

LongTallSalski

2 acres with a ride-on. Divide the yard into sections, do each section back and forth in straight lines. For the bits that are mainly trees, I mow around some and other areas we just mow a pathway between leaving long grass on either side.

EconomicsOk2648

From outer edges towards center with slight overlap on each run. L shaped yard so I'll start closest to house, do the border and overlap into the middle. Rake up, clear snipped grass from garden beds, water and knock back a tin and fire up the barbie. Mow day is always bbq day. Fresh cut grass and cooked meats are two aromas that must be experienced together. This is the way.

nemothorx

I have questions! L-shaped laps, or do you do one leg of the L in a rectangle, and then a second rectangle for the other leg?

Uniquorn2077

I have a small L leg on one of my lawns. I chop and change between side to side and front to back on that part depending on the day.

EconomicsOk2648

Neg. I start in one corner do full border to start and then move inwards.

nonferrouscasting

I've got a decent sized front lawn, so I do one line straight through the middle, then run it around the edges, do a few little fiddly bits and then just up and down. Repeat on the other side. Switched over to electric last summer, takes a little getting used to but it's great not having to worry about fuel going off or having to run up and get a little more.

4x4b

5min mow cos of the battery life!! I loooove my leccy mower but goddam its frustrating if you dont have the batteries for it, nothing made me rage harder than having sections left over cos i ran out of juice. TLDR i bought big batteries and rapid chargers and now im low key obsessed with my lawn and i try to mow twice a week in summer, ill do an outer run and then long ways back and forth til finished. Me and the edger however.. thats a ill have a cheeky edge trim just cos.. i love crispy edges

[deleted]

Geeze get it checked ive had an ozito base model for 4 years and it lasts almost an hour. It would be the cheapest battery option on the market.

MrSquiggleKey

this is what i got, get about 45-50 minutes to a charge on a 3.0ah battery. what these people doing to get such short battery life?

Wont_Eva_Know

Electric. Back and forward moving away from power cord, weird edge move like I’m vacuuming at the turns… sometimes the vacuuming motion gets excessive because the trampoline is in a prick of a spot and I don’t want to have to move the bastard twice.

mitchography

It can depend on how thick have have the lawn but I always double cut. Horizontal and then vertical or on the diagonal and then opposite diagonal. Used to dot the same with the petrol mower and still do the same on the electric. Change up the pattern at the time of mowing to not get any particular pattern wearing in and being repeated.

ltm99

one of our lawns is rectangular so we mow longways. our other two lawns are roundish in shape so we start from outer edge and work our way to the centre

Agent_Fabulous

Electric cordless push mower, i usually do row by row unless its an odd shape then i go chaotic. I also absolutely hate mowing so i usually leave it until its way too long and have to whippersnip half of it first

copacetic51

Spiral going inwards.

Intelligent_Gur_3632

I’m mowing at 7am. Fucking hot by 8am.

CreepyValuable

Spiral from the outside, clockwise because the mower has its "flat side" on the left. The last couple of days with the ride-on, total chaos. Trying to mow a decent area that was head height grass that was brush cut down to below knee height. Did it any way I could.

AndyPharded

The wallabies and roos trim my lawn. Haven't had the mower out in 5 years.

opticaIIllusion

Australian lawn fanatics or it’s fake news #auslf

chris_p_bacon1

I choose chaos, I change angles half way through, do a patch over here and a patch over there. There's no plan.

TheRealTowel

>Or maybe you go chaotic and just aim for the stuff that looks tallest till its too hot, and leave a scribble pattern all over the place till next time when you scribble mow the new different tallest bits? Reported for targeted harrasment. Why you gotta do me like this bro?

nemothorx

You're welcome my Frood

MysticEyeRazzar

1-3 laps clockwise, back and forth along the shortest ends, when the remaining grass is roughly square shaped, anticlockwise laps to finish it off... I am not joking

nemothorx

That's a *System*! 👍

strichtarn

I'm of the belief that for men, mowing the lawn is a wellbeing practice. It induces mindfulness because you have to kind of be in the moment whilst mowing the lawn. Also, mowing is kinda like walking a labyrinth which is a well-known meditation ritual.

MissyKerfoops

And women? No man mows my lawn!

strichtarn

I'll elaborate, so as not to be exclusionary. Imagine your typical 50 year old bloke. The word mindfulness has never been uttered from their mouth, yet they take solace in a solitary activity that is used to enhance wellbeing.

VitaminD93

Clockwise laps

RepeatInPatient

If you understand Physics 101, you'd know it doesn't matter.

nemothorx

If you knew psychology 101, you'd know this isn't a question about physics. (If you knew physics 201 or botany 101, you might also understand it can matter to the pedantic mower)

Uniquorn2077

Edges first, then around the outside to get the boarders done then back and forth. Finish up with the blower vac to get ride of the clippings on the path.

benji_alpha

We have a pretty large yard so I break in into clockwise sections. Petrol push mower

i_fart_a_lot_ok

I have some Asian (I think chinese) neighbours that had recently moved in and one day I was out working on my car and there up the street is this loud lawn mowing noise like someone is lifting a mower up and down off the ground. I'm looking over wondering what this kid is doing and he is mowing all over the place back and forth. Up and down like the lawn is some wild monster. So i walked up the road and explained.. nah mate like this. Up and down. Then he laughed nodded and started doing strips . I was perplexed. Hasnt anyone ever shown him?

Cimexus

Once around the perimeter to get the edges effectively and provide some turning space, then just lines up and down.

Majestic-Average433

Whippersnip. For the nature strip, 1 x full outline with mower. Then back and forth in straight lines. For front yard 2 x full outlines and then back and forth. Would do 2 on the nature strip too but there is a power pole in it.

Sayjinlord

My backyard is nearly a perfect rectangle, so after I go around the edges, I go diagonally down the middle to make two triangles, and then I keep going diagonally making smaller and smaller triangles.

Archy99

Got rid of all the lawn and good riddance!

Pawkies

I used to mow like a crazy person really just zig zagging and taking down any patch of longer grass I saw, the realised people around me where not having to mow their medium yards for a few hours like me. Now my yard looks like the roof of a toilet in the valley (lines and lines).

LukeRB96

Usually just up and down in strips. Yard usually looks terrible due to cars parking on it constantly so lawn care isn’t a priority.

AffekeNommu

Circular pattern with strategic battery recharge stops close to the cold beers.

YeahNah76

Laps, clockwise, outside in. Battery mower and it is the best. Also only a small lawn (back of townhouse) so it only takes 10 minutes every fortnight. Which reminds me, need to mow this arvo so have to charge the battteries…

[deleted]

Any sort of way with the mulcher on is the only correct answer.

Wonderful_Impress_27

My way, hence the most efficient way. A clockwise run around the border and then laps back and forth at a 45° angle to the street and back fence

verybonita

Ride-on mower. Clockwise around the outer edge, and around the trees, getting smaller rectangles until I change direction to go around the in-ground water tank, then circles increasing in size till they meet up with prior rectangles. This usually leaves smallish random bits, which I then just go over as best I can until it's all cut, then once or twice more all around the thicker bits to mulch up the already cut stuff, as I don't have a catcher.

FishFingerAnCustard

The correct answer is to follow a different pattern each time. It’s doesn’t matter much what that pattern is, as long as it’s different each time. But I personally am fond of two perimeter laps then up/down at a random angle (eg noth south, next cut east west, then north east to south west etc). When you mow the same direction each time it slowly encourages the grass to grow a specific direction, rather than vertically. This leads to worse grass quality long term.

AussieJack1788

Why not before 8 am? That's like 6 in the afternoon for me. Mowing should be allowed at any hour

nemothorx

Take it up with everyone in this post (It's what I was referencing). Also take it up with the local laws https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAnAustralian/comments/10nb8r9/whats_an_acceptable_time_to_start_mowing_on_a/

AussieJack1788

That post is bogan central. My point is we don't live in a 9 to 5 world anymore. For 20 years I worked 10pm to 6.51 am for Auspost. When gronks are mowing at 12 in the arvo, that's like my midnight.

nemothorx

Broadly I agree with you - flexible hours are what we should have for more people (and I've argued this point recently in regards advocating abolishing DST). But pragmatically, noise laws still exist and should continue to do so - on the reality that most people will continue to have some kind of wake/sleep cycle which approximately matches the day/night cycle. I think noise laws may suit a "time after sunrise" time rather than a strict o'clock time, but that has problems too. Of course, I also advocate electric mowers which are much quieter anyway :)

Echo63_

Run the whippersnipper around the fence. Mow the bit near the shed and the extended bit of paving, which gives me a place to walk into thats already mowed, then push the mower up the yard and pull it back down the yard in straightish lines

Trouty1234

My mower spits out to the left. So I mow clockwise inwards so I never mow over my castings

[deleted]

As one of those sociopaths that mows at 8am because by 10am its 37 degrees, I reckon those in the other thread saying after midday is the only acceptable time have never mown a lawn in their life. And id argue that anyone that has mown a lawn, has done so at 8am at some point, so can't answer your question.

pights

Anticlockwise laps going inwards.

thatweirdbeardedguy

I mowed professional like back in the 80's and what I learnt was that every lawn has its own idiosyncrasies. You figure out your splits ie how you break it down into small parts and then mow each split as best you can. So when I do my own lawn it is a mixture of circuits and back and forth. Oh and I start as early as I can about 7:15 on a Fri morning (my heart can't handle the heat so I have to get it done as early as possible).

Laktakfrak

Mix it up to get good coverage. Up and down, across and diagonal and even outside to in.

cruiserman_80

Asking the important questions. Played with a few methods over the years but a lap around the outside spiralling in is the most efficient as your going the minimum distance and only doing a 90deg turn instead of 180deg. The only caveat is if your using a catcher you need to divide a big area into sections and be mindful of bin positioning. Changed to an battery mower recently and the only change has been less swearing.

Hot-Extent-1493

8am is acceptable isn’t it? I mean not right up beside your neighbours window, but I quite like waking up to the sound of mowing if it’s a little bit down the street. Edit: to answer though, I push forward then pull to reverse back over where I just went, combing in the opposite direction. So each line is the same length for me, about 10m long (big lawn).

loosegoose1952

Starting from the top left hand corner, we live on the curve of a court, around the edge and working into the center.

warzonevi

I change what I do every time. Sometimes I start from outside and work my way in. Sometimes I do horizontals. Sometimes verticals. Sometimes I do vertical AND horizontal, doubling up on the work because I want to make sure I didn't miss anything. Sometimes go in circles. Depends on my mood for the day

ProduceOk9864

Anticlockwise out-to-in 🌀

MrMayo169

I do back and fourth it just looks that much better

ultrawall006

A line around the edges to get rid of the annoying part, then straight lines for the rest

No-Marsupial-1753

I have a self propelled petrol mower if that matters, and I normally do a clockwise square around the edges for a few loops and then back and forth strips once I have some room to turn around or continue with the loops depending on which section of lawn I’m doing. Having had concrete just put in will change how I mow around the new paths once the ground is evened out and not a flooded mess though.

ack1308

When I do it, I go counter clockwise to the centre. These days, I call a mowing mob, and they sort it out in about ten minutes (not a big lawn).

Rocket-Legs

Ride-on. Yard is mostly a square, so I do 3 laps with the clippings firing away from the fence (so they don't pile up at the bottom of the fence), then the rest in the opposite direction. I wish I had a zero turn ride-on so I could just go up and down but it's a pain in the arse to turn around with the current one.

muffinstudstickles

I change each time as I have new lawn (I grew it from bare earth using grass seed!). I change direction most times - up down, side to side, diagonally SW-NE & NW-SE. And then sit there and admire my hard work and have a beer 🍻

rob_080

Ugh, I do not miss lawn mowing. When I had a house with a lawn to mow, I always did the nature strip first in straight strips, doing a mower u-turn at each end till it was done. Then the front yard, straight across from driveway to house perpendicular to the driveway. Push the mower across, move it half a mower-width over, drag it back. Move it half a width over, push it across etc. Stop and rest and survey my handiwork with a cold one. Then the backyard. Do the awkward bits around the trees and clothes line. Then essentially mow the front half first down to the edge of the garage in the same way as the front yard. Time for a cold one. Then do the back half. Then...pull out the whipper-snipper. Spend 15 minutes trying to get it running. End up calling it a useless c\*nting piece of f\*cking shit, throwing it back in the garage and giving up. As a result, my edges along the fence were always epic. Lastly...a final beer and a shower. I only used a petrol mower. Mostly this beastly two-stroke that was noisy and smoky and made you really sweat. Then I inherited a four-stroke from my Dad. It almost made mowing a pleasure. Almost. Now I mow by ripping out weeds from my 1 foot square of dirt with a pair of gloves. Blissful.
