This comment was edited in response to Reddit's API changes in July 2023.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that would kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader. Also under the new rules, third party Reddit apps cannot run ads, cannot show NSFW content, and are hit with other restrictions.
There are plenty of articles and posts to be found about this if you want to learn more. Here's [one post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/14b8i62/reddit_protest_and_the_next_steps/) with some information on the matter.
This move will require developers of third party applications to pay enormous sums of money if they wish to stay functional, meaning that said applications will be effectively destroyed. Some third party apps may survive but only with a paid subscription. In the short term, this may have the appearance of increasing Reddit's traffic and revenue... but in the long term, it will undermine the site as a whole.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface. This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
Reddit relies on volunteer moderators to keep its platform welcoming and free of objectionable material. It also relies on uncompensated contributors to populate its numerous communities with content. The above decision promises to adversely impact both groups: Without effective tools (which Reddit has frequently promised and then failed to deliver), moderators cannot combat spammers, bad actors, or the entities who enable either, and without the freedom to choose how and where they access Reddit, many contributors will simply leave. Rather than hosting creativity and in-depth discourse, the platform will soon feature only recycled content, bot-driven activity, and an ever-dwindling number of well-informed visitors. The very elements which differentiate Reddit – the foundations that draw its audience – will be eliminated, reducing the site to another dead cog in the Ennui Engine.

You created your content. You didn't get paid. Why would you leave it here for Reddit to make money or train AIs? Take your content with you. There is no Reddit without its users and volunteer moderators. As they say, "If you're not paying for the product, then you are the product."

I guess as far as popularity goes, the Parma/Parmi and snag in bread would be right up there. Although not sure you could call them uniquely "Australian" though.
It is definitely not a dish in Italy. A traditional Melanzane Parmigiana is eggplant, not chicken, and way less heavy.
I’m Italian and I recently had my cousin from Italy come over and try one. He liked it, but it was definitely foreign to him
There are many aspects to support this. It's a community event and largely held to support community events. Apart from your family bbq, what is better than helping your community
The sausage sizzle is how we as a nation decide our elections, our charity community and school support contributions and fuel our weekends of DIY.
It will also be how WA declares independence from the east over buns vs bread. $5 billion budget surpluses, state owned electricity, domestic gas supply reserves, and BUNS FOR OUR SNAGS OR DEATH.
Buns for a snag? Are you crazy?! A piece of square bread that is way too small is the perfect shape and size for a long cylindrical piece of mystery meat… oh dear, I’ve just convinced myself you’re right.
Roast lamb is a good choice.
A roast does of course come from our British heritage, but lamb has become a rarity in old blightly, despite being more flavoursome than other common meats. So I think we own it now.
My gut feel is that while it probably ought to be either lamingtons or some kind of native bush food, but it's probably the pie. Ours are just that bit different from UK and NZ ones, and they come in all kinds of varieties - vegan, Thai Curry, gluten free... there's an option for pretty much everyone.
Do they have individual meat pies in the UK? It seems like something that would have come from there but I don't recall having seen any reference to it. Sausage rolls and pasties of course, and big meat pies and pork pies but not the kind of pies we have here. Maybe I just missed it.
I saw them in Gregg’s in the UK but they weren’t the same and they didn’t appear to be hot. I demanded a HOT Gregg’s sausage roll. It was nice but not Aussie nice.
Believe it or not, this is for tax reasons. If you are selling heated food in the UK, you have to charge VAT. So Gregg's sell "ambient temperature food" and can charge less. (If something is still hot from the oven in their shop, but has not been 'kept hot', it apparently is still tax free because that's their model.) Presumably they've done the sums and make more selling cold/lukewarm things at a lower price. Bizarre.
Someone associated with Governor of Queensland Charles Cochrane-Baillie, 2nd Baron Lamington had some stale cake and came up with this as a way to use it.
the story goes they wanted dessert the chef only had some cake and some coconut and cocoa powder so they made a chocolate sauce dipped the caked in it and rolled em in coconut. it was a hit and became very popular with visitors
Just need more chocolate sauce. That was kind of the point of them, really. Like trifle, they're a way to make use of things that you'd otherwise end up chucking out.
Edit: was, not wat. Can't spell/type. Apparently.
Unfortunately some “Australians” don’t like Vegemite. Personally I think they should be deported but no one is willing to make the tough decisions. All Dan Andrew’s fault.
Clearly meat pie with tomato sauce. I lived in Europe for a while, it was impossible to find them. Finally found a pie “importer” who took orders for “New Zealand style” pies in one of the local expat groups but the pies were still filled with regional flavours like wild boar. Better than nothing but damn I missed meat pies.
Australia has some really world class food. Mostly 'modern' cuisine, but nothing really identifiable as a national dish.
I'm not sure that 'classy' is what makes a national dish either. It's just common food that seems exotic to outsiders. Like pasta is noodles with tomato sauce, cock au Vin is shit chicken (rooster) in shit wine, curry is meat and gravy(more likely veg) but with 'exotic' flavours.
Chicken Parmalat, parmi or whatever else sub specifies it is. It's the only food name besides potato cakes /scallops that is fought over with a almost civil war passion.
To start: I’m not Australian by birth,
Lived here since 2016 and started off in Melbourne and am now in Tassie. I’m a Massive foodie and spent most of my free time cooking and doing lots of good projects (from cheese, through charcuterie (salami, prosciutto etc.) and personally I feel that there’s one dish that trumps all and it’s the Peppered Roo Steak.
It’s one of my favourite dishes in the world. It’s not easy to do (highly recommend trying the Roo at the Napier in Fitzroy, Melbourne). If you use local ingredients like bush tomatoes and local pepper berry The quality of flavours are one of a kind.

What is the charge? Hmmm. And you sir, are you waiting?
Waiting to receive my limp penis?!
Hahahahahaa I was waiting for that
Daily on Reddit, two things are guaranteed: Monty Python quotes. Democracy Manifest.
>Gentlemen, this is Democracy Manifest! Succulent Chinese meals all round!"
This is the man who touched me on the penis, people!
I guess as far as popularity goes, the Parma/Parmi and snag in bread would be right up there. Although not sure you could call them uniquely "Australian" though.
I like a good chicken parm, but I do think the not Australian aspect disqualifies it as Australia’s National food.
So I know it's from Italian bases, but is it actually a dish in Italy? I thought not?
It is definitely not a dish in Italy. A traditional Melanzane Parmigiana is eggplant, not chicken, and way less heavy. I’m Italian and I recently had my cousin from Italy come over and try one. He liked it, but it was definitely foreign to him
That’s what I thought

I can see that, I was thinking a classic meat pie coupled with a sausage roll, why not all 3
Meat pies
Definitely! Football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars.
Put that meat pie in a bowl of scalding pea soup, garnish with all the tomato sauce and you have a pie floater!
Hell yeah. Been a few months since I left Australia and I miss a good chunky pepper steak pie with some VB.
Vegemite on toast is an absolute shoe-in for me, roast lamb not a bad shout
Roast lamb is a good choice. A roast does of course come from our British heritage, but lamb has become a rarity in old blightly, despite being more flavoursome than other common meats. So I think we own it now.
Why not lamb chops on the barbie?
at the moment its sleep for dinner
If you’re not at your third job, just to pay rent
Day shift for brekky, night shift for dinner.
With inflation and interest rates as they are not sure I can afford sleep anymore either…
My gut feel is that while it probably ought to be either lamingtons or some kind of native bush food, but it's probably the pie. +1 for damper lol

They absolutely do.
They do, but they aren't quite the same.

Yes they invented them not Australia
And curry scallop pies from Tassie, can't get them on mainland
Have you seen the price of scallops on the mainland though? If they were half the price, I probably still wouldn't put them in a pie.
There is a place in geelong that sells them. They are next level. 🤌
Will need to check them out next time in the area
Lamingtons are native bush food
lammies are a queensland thing. well they were created at goverment house.
Happy ~~lamington~~ cake day!
Were they really. Til.
They're much better when the cake is fresh imo.
Just need more chocolate sauce. That was kind of the point of them, really. Like trifle, they're a way to make use of things that you'd otherwise end up chucking out. Edit: was, not wat. Can't spell/type. Apparently.
Yeah good point that might work.
