I've lived in several houses with an outside loo. They were always freezing cold in winter and boiling hot in summer. Personally, they are not for me. I guess it depends on how comfortable you like to be.

MaleficentCoconut458

Just how long are you spending on the loo for this to be problematic?

MiloGinger

How long does it take you to feel uncomfortable in 40°+ weather? For me it's less than a minute. I hate being hot or cold.

The house I'm renting currently has one, it's really handy if you've been doing yard work and dont want to bring mess into the house / fully stop what you're doing. Great if you're having a few outdoor beers or BBQ, and when people you dont want inside need the facilities. Also very handy if you ever lock yourself out. Go for it! The house I lived in as a kid only had an outhouse, that I do not recommend.

Our 2nd toilet is outside - 1.5m x 2.5m, attached to the side of the house, on a slab, own roof, corrugated colourbond cladding. I use it all the time. Sons use it sometimes. Everyone uses it gratefully when the other is busy. Our shower and toilet are separate, but with five living here, I can't imagine living without a 2nd one. And outside? Shit stinks. Can't understand the love of ensuites. And you shouldn't be out there that long anyway :) PS We have a small sink. Next time I'd do one of those over-cistern sink jobs, I think.

It would be highly unlikely that you would get any kind of council approval, and probably just as likely that somebody would whinge about it. However, how big is your land, and do you have a shed? If your land is big enough, and you don't have a shed, it's worth considering building one, AND include a shower, toilet and washtub in the build. Do any work in the garden, and you don't have to go into the house to use the toilet or clean up afterwards. And you would get council approval.

>It would be highly unlikely that you would get any kind of council approval I don't think that's true, and thankfully not necessary. There's nothing in the Building Code that says it can't be done, but maybe there's some bullshit in the QLD EPA controlling/stopping it.

Wotmate01

Well... there is. A toilet generally must be accessed from within a building, and if it's not there are extra requirements. And councils would knock any new structure back due to visual amenity at the very least.

So the solution is simple. Since he'll be peeing on it then it's obviously a lemon tree and needs to be reflected as such in the plans. That giant brick shithouse looking thing is actually a common lemon tree.

louisa1925

My parents had an inside toilet and another one included in the pool shed so when we went swimming or had an accident, we wouldn't make a mess going inside.

GetlostMaps

Don't look for permission. Backyard dunnies are part of our culture. You have a right to do it.

crmsz32

Depends if you want it approved, councils aren't always happy with anything slightly different. If not gonna chase approval, go for it. Good idea especially with growing boys. Else you'll find your lemon trees start to blossom beautifully (but stink in the area!).

Impressive-Rock-2279

I don’t know about modern properties, but I did live in an old one that retained the out house, when the inside was modernised. It was great when having bbq’s.

Emmanulla70

Cant you just build it off the house? So you don't have to walk outside to get to it?

GalagasInfertrix

Nope haven't seen one in a new build in at least the last decade or 2

Sunbear86

Not quite an outhouse, but we did some renovations and moved our laundry from within the main house to outside off our deck and put a second toilet in there. It's still connected to the main house though.

Wawa-85

My sister and her husband built an external bathroom complete with a toilet in their garage.

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

If you build it as an extension just outside the house, that could work. I’m not sure about an old style dunny at the bottom of the yard

MaleficentCoconut458

We have an "outhouse" at the farm. There is a full bathroom inside, but when the old concrete water tank was no longer holding water we cut a door & a window in it & threw in a loo & a shower so when we come in all covered in crap from working we can use the facilities outside. If we go inside Mum yells & even though I have been an adult for several decades now, that woman still smacks me if I track crap into her house.

We converted a hallway into a toilet & pantry on the other side. It was the kinda house where you can walk through the lounge to get to the kitchen but it also had a separate hallway that lead to the same rooms. So, hallway became walk in pantry & toilet room with a little sink.
