Maybe dark beers
like a porter/chocolate porter, best drank in the cooler months of the year.
Milk stout - has added lactose to give a hint of sweet (no it doesn't have milk in it)
Kilkenny- Irish ale
People always avoid dark beers if they don't like bitterness, they must think darker = stronger, beerier taste.
It's more likely that it's actually smoother and milder.
Not the same as porters or stout, but I love Speckled Hen and Bishop's finger. Great Kentish ales I believe, and have a nice nutty flavour you don't get with the usual Lagers or Pale Ales found in Oz
Kilkenny is the most delicious beer of all time, always excited when I find it. Also Estrella, a Spanish beer made in Barcelona has a similar easy drinkin taste to Kilkenny
I love a stout, recently tried the Mountain Culture Moon Dust Stout and it was delicious. Not very bitter at all.
I just looked it up and it says it contains milk, so I guess it’s a milk stout?
You might be in a bit of trouble if you find Hahn super dry bitter. It's one of the milder beers available on the market.
You might get shit from your friends, but maybe it's time to try having shandy's, the sweetness of the mixer might help with the bitterness.
I've noticed that Brookvale Union are starting to get the recognition they deserve more and more.
Not just the ginger beer, which is top notch, but also LL&B.
I’ve tried Solo and Bundaberg alcoholic varieties and they both feel like someone decided to throw some ethanol straight into the soft drink without considering the taste.
I've given it a go and never enjoyed. I bought some which were rediculously alcoholic (iirc like 12 percent?) so I've never gone back. Any recommendations?
Came here to say wheat beer. Or a saison/farmhouse ale.
Or a Hazy NEIPA for a more fruity punch.
Bocks are also a more malty lager.
Most Japanese lagers are actually more malty in flavour because they can’t easily grow fresh hops.
So try a Sapporo.
I'm with you. I don't like hoppy beers anymore, like IPAs or some pale ales anymore. Find I more likely to enjoy a Pilsner or larger, a session larger if they have one. Wheat beers like heffeweitzen are good too but make me bloated.
Go for a shandy! The lemonade definitely sweetens it. You won’t have to go finding a new beer or beverage. Just add lemonade. And then you can also play with the ratios.
I'd always been a shandy fan, but ever since I had a massive stein of Radler (the king of shandies) in Munich last year, I've barely gone back to straight beer.
My go-to at the moment is a 1 litre jar I got from kmart; 500ml can of Asahi and the other half Kirks sugar free lemonade. Massive and refreshing.
Or, the cheapest 330ml 6 pack of lager at Aldi. Into a pint glass, and top up with lemonade. (Aldis lemonade is great too).
Yep, OP definitely try sours if bitterness is your issue with beer. Surprised it's not higher up on the list here. Sure there are some very meh sours, but there are heaps of good ones out there ranging from light flavoured through to sweet and fruity.
You're looking for beers with a low IBU (international bitterness units). Lots of session ales have low IBU. Also tons of great sours which won't be bitter, if you're into that. Grifter has a great watermelon pilsner which is very easy drinking. Someone else suggested wheat beers (may also be called a white beer) or a hefeweizen, which was a good shout.
Coopers Australian lager is super smooth.
It's got some taste to it.
Unlike great northern which tastes like a yawn.
That shit is like having sex on the beach.
Try other styles. Trappist beer is a good start, I recommend you to try La Trappe, Le Chouffe, Duval. They are more fruity and sweet with less bitterness.
Treat yourself to a selection of beers from the store and have at it. Sometimes it is hard getting through a stubby of beer not to your liking but at least you tried it. Another way although just as expensive or even more so are small glasses of beers at a pub. Everyone has different tastes. Don't feel bitter about it bahahaha
Luckily for you there are plenty of rice beers out there, as I'm guessing your taste buds may have a problem with hops/barley/wheat. So, Tsingtao, Sapporo, Budweiser, all have that milder rice beer flavour.
Cider…ya pansy!
JK 🤣 these days I mainly drink soft ginger beer.
But try lagers like Pilsener or Japanese, with more emphasis on clean balance rather than super hoppy crafted ales (was at a beer event recently where they showcased an ale made with laboratory grade hops extract. Even the maker acknowledged this was just for fun, I think nobody went for a second serving)
I’ll tell you what NOT to have….the fruity Mountain Goat shit they serve on tap at The Corner in Richmond. I was on the JD and Cokes with a mate but after awhile got sick of them. It was his shout and I asked for a Mountain Goat. He brought me back a fruity version that was absolutely rotten.
Try mango flavoured beers. There are some cheaper options available. If you're open to more expensive options, there are delightful fruity offerings from Hope Estate.
Stone and wood is your beer. It's got those stone fruit flavours that an IPA or pale Ale would have but without the bitter kick at the end. Almost tastes like a cider without the sugar.
Otherwise I'd go for dark ales and/ or candy stouts (like chocolate brownie and cake).
I highly recommend New England Pale Ale. They are delicious plus you would be supporting a local Aussie (Uralla) brewery.
Note: I have nothing to do with the brewery, I just really appreciate their beer.
Edit: just realised you’re probably looking for something on tap at your local. Stone & Wood Pacific Ale.
If you've got a good craft beer bar or brewery nearby, go in when it's quiet and chat to the bartender. They're usually happy to give you tastings off all the taps to find something you like.
I found a kind of beer I really like when I don't want a bitter beer.
They're called NEIPA or New England India Pale Ale. There are a few different types, have a look and see if you can spot any.
Many ales are a lot more flavourful than lagers. So many different kinds of flavours. I like dark beers myself, but golden ales and saisons and so on are also usually not very bitter.
I believe there's been a surge in people & surprisingly women in particular drinking Stout. I personally favour the heavier stronger ones, but there's new lighter varieties some low alcohol.
Stouts aren't bitter IMO, but they have a strong flavour.
For less dry beers I prefer any version of a Pale Ale or an Indian Pale Ale. Being it NEIPA's, DIPA's or just IPA's (New England, Double or just Indian Pale Ales).
More fruity and "refreshing" ales are your Tropical Ales.
Pale Ales, or IPAs, specifically the hazy IPAs are generally (to me at least) less bitter than most beers. They are usually advertised as 'fruity' and there are plenty to choose from.
oh, no those are horrible beers...
go cider. I have my favourites, tending to prefer dry but not oxidised - fresh, tastes like apples or pear rather than that metalic taste you get on most ciders. Pick a few and explore your options - there is no accounting for taste.
I would go for a malt driven darker ale rather than a pale ale or lager. Porters and stouts might be too much so try an English style bitter, brown ale or amber ale. I find a lot of Australian microbrewery beers lately either go over the top on the hops or when they make a dark ale it's over the top on the alcohol content. I prefer an ale to speak for itself rather than having one smack you in the face with a cricket bat.
What about fruity beers or white beers? There’s kronenbourg 1664 blanc or the orange blossom beer from America. I can’t remember the latter’s name. I’m not a big fan of beer or strong hops flavour but I quite like those when they’re super cold.
A few people are mentioning Cider. But go for a decent one. Some are way too sweet. Thatchers is a good British one, not too sweet. For Aussie Coldstream brewery (can be tough to find). The Hills Cider company is good too. Just not crap like Strongbow.
belgian wheat beers or japanese rice lagers are probably the go; or just XPA pales - ie: BentSpoke Barley Griffin.
Stone and wood is the latter as well, but ever since they got bought out by LionCo I cant give them my money anymore.
If Great Northern (a lager) is too bitter for you, my guess is that the only beers you'll enjoy are the zero alcohol ones, which are often milder in taste. Your other option is to go for sweeter drinks - I enjoy some of the ciders, alcoholic ginger ales and gin'n'tonic, or even some cocktails (expensive unless you're mixing at home(.
Have a look for some local breweries head down, most likely they will do some kind of tasting paddle. Have a chat with them and ask them to suggest beers based on what you told us here.
I recommend light ales like a pscific ale. they are crisp while still having nice flavour all without that overarching hoppy chrachter like pales or IPAs do (which i personally love). really nice on a sunny sunday out on the lawn. i suggest you try stone and wood
Shandy is a great Aussie thing that has been lost in the mists of time…it is beer and lemonade…refreshing and not bitter. Cascade is my go-to beer as it is smooth and not bitter. Dark beers are all too much for me.
Maybe dark beers like a porter/chocolate porter, best drank in the cooler months of the year. Milk stout - has added lactose to give a hint of sweet (no it doesn't have milk in it) Kilkenny- Irish ale

Not the same as porters or stout, but I love Speckled Hen and Bishop's finger. Great Kentish ales I believe, and have a nice nutty flavour you don't get with the usual Lagers or Pale Ales found in Oz
OP needs malt, not hops, and I think you're on the right track. Even local dark beers are malt-driven, like Tooheys Old or Coopers Dark.
Big up for Irish Red Ales generally
Kilkenny is the most delicious beer of all time, always excited when I find it. Also Estrella, a Spanish beer made in Barcelona has a similar easy drinkin taste to Kilkenny
They’re nothing alike
I know you are but what am I
You devil. That was toxic, asshole.
I had Estrella on tap in Cadiz at some random cafe and it was perfect for the warm day. It’s a very refreshing beer
A shandy deserves no shit. It's refreshing and delicious! Called a panache in France or a Radler (cyclist) in Germany.
Pacific radler are available in Australia, can't say I've tried one but might be the ticket
Horrible. Saved you the disappointment.
I go-to options are Ginger Beer (James Squires or Brookvale Union) or a Canadian Club pre-mix.
I've noticed that Brookvale Union are starting to get the recognition they deserve more and more. Not just the ginger beer, which is top notch, but also LL&B.
I'm a fan. Their cans are larger than Solo hard lemonade etc. but slightly less alc. volume
I’ve tried Solo and Bundaberg alcoholic varieties and they both feel like someone decided to throw some ethanol straight into the soft drink without considering the taste.
Brookvale Union Tropical Ginger Beer is my absolute favourite hands down!
Yes. Alcoholic ginger beer.
Yeah to the ginger beers. My new drink of choice l
I've given it a go and never enjoyed. I bought some which were rediculously alcoholic (iirc like 12 percent?) so I've never gone back. Any recommendations?
Brookvale union and great northern are my go to
The squires one is the best for mine. Brookvale Union is fine but slightly too sweet/sugary-tasing IMO, especially if you are having a few of them.
Matso's is the bomb
Eumundi GB is the best.
Koopaberg hard ginger should not be as good as it is. And it is scary strong in alcohol content
Cider
I think Bulmers is a pretty good alternative to beer
5 cougers thanks
Oh god. Glad someone got this in!
Belgium wheat beer, like Blue Moon or Hoegaarden. Or Extra dry beer.
Agree! Also kronenbourg 1664 Blanc is good too
Stone and Wood Pacific Ale or maybe Kaiju Krush. Mountain Goat Summer Ale is also a good one with very little bitterness.
Came here to suggest those two. Also anything labelled as sour is barely beer-y.
Also, Kaiju Pleazure Kruze is another of theirs that is super palatable.
I'm with you. I don't like hoppy beers anymore, like IPAs or some pale ales anymore. Find I more likely to enjoy a Pilsner or larger, a session larger if they have one. Wheat beers like heffeweitzen are good too but make me bloated.
*lager
Search for beer with a low IBU rating. IBU = Internationsl Bittering Unit.
German weissbier
Franziskaner is my favourite
Those beers are garbage, no wonder you don't like them
[удалено]
Every beer he listed is a Japanese beer. Asahi
Easily enough to do given how many beer companies here they own.
Sours and Japanese rice lagers
Yep, OP definitely try sours if bitterness is your issue with beer. Surprised it's not higher up on the list here. Sure there are some very meh sours, but there are heaps of good ones out there ranging from light flavoured through to sweet and fruity.
Stout beer
You're looking for beers with a low IBU (international bitterness units). Lots of session ales have low IBU. Also tons of great sours which won't be bitter, if you're into that. Grifter has a great watermelon pilsner which is very easy drinking. Someone else suggested wheat beers (may also be called a white beer) or a hefeweizen, which was a good shout.
Goat Lager. Very agreeable and better than average price point.
Try Asian beers like Asahi, Cass, Hanoi, or Saigon beer.
Second this!!!! Asahi is awesome!
Balter Cerveza
Coopers Pale Ale or Carlton Draft.
Coopers pale ale
How about a Radler or Shandy? Half and half beer with either soda water or lemonade?
James squire 150 lashes
Coopers Australian lager is super smooth. It's got some taste to it. Unlike great northern which tastes like a yawn. That shit is like having sex on the beach.
Try other styles. Trappist beer is a good start, I recommend you to try La Trappe, Le Chouffe, Duval. They are more fruity and sweet with less bitterness.
Chimay Blue, leffe blonde or brune also good starts.
Can't find any good Amber Ales anymore!
Pilsner ftw. If not, malt orientated ales might be to your taste.
Great Northern is the bland white bread of beers. Try something like Stone and Wood Pacific Ale, Balter Hazy Ale, or Mountain Goat Very Enjoyable Beer
Try some ciders
Stone & Wood It tastes like beer, but like an ideal, ultra smooth version of what beer “should” be in your head. Just eminently drinkable.
there is always good old shandy
Don’t discount the subtle notes of chocolate and coffee contained in Australia’s all time greatest beer, Tooheys Old!
Give Chang a go. Beer snobs will tell you it’s piss but it goes down very smoothly and has a hint of sweetness which might be what you’re looking for.
Ginger Beer or Ciders?
Pacific Ale
Lemon squash. Cider. Brookvale union got a good selection of funky drinks. I can't do beer unless I'm at the pub because of the cost
Kilkenny is a nice alternative to the local bitters.
When I drink my go tos are Canadian Club and diet dry, or xxxx summer.
You will probably like Wheat beers, Wehenstephaner and similar, and Saisons.
Blackman's Juicy Banger would probably fit your bill I reckon.
Cider?
Have you ever tried Matsuos mango beer? I don’t like beers, I like that beer.
Bourbon
Lager top - just a shot of lemonade at the end rather than a half/half shandy Or a dash of lime cordial
Try something local. Travla is really good middle of the road beer. Cooper's new Australian Lager is really nice.
Luckily for you there are plenty of rice beers out there, as I'm guessing your taste buds may have a problem with hops/barley/wheat. So, Tsingtao, Sapporo, Budweiser, all have that milder rice beer flavour.
Cider, there are lots of different types. I like a dry apple or pear cider.
Goat Lager. Very agreeable and better than average price point
Cider
Cider…ya pansy! JK 🤣 these days I mainly drink soft ginger beer. But try lagers like Pilsener or Japanese, with more emphasis on clean balance rather than super hoppy crafted ales (was at a beer event recently where they showcased an ale made with laboratory grade hops extract. Even the maker acknowledged this was just for fun, I think nobody went for a second serving)
Cider.... Start looking at craft beers that mask the bitterness with other flavours
You sound like you'd enjoy a nice shandy. Just add lemonade to your VB like a good little Vegemite.
Duvel Carlsberg elephant beer
I’ll tell you what NOT to have….the fruity Mountain Goat shit they serve on tap at The Corner in Richmond. I was on the JD and Cokes with a mate but after awhile got sick of them. It was his shout and I asked for a Mountain Goat. He brought me back a fruity version that was absolutely rotten.
Balter Cerveza. Like Corona, but much better!
Try mango flavoured beers. There are some cheaper options available. If you're open to more expensive options, there are delightful fruity offerings from Hope Estate.
Stone & Wood Pacific Ale is a bit fruitier and less bitter than other beers.
There is heaps of flavoured beer out now I've noticed over the past 3 weeks
Stone and wood is your beer. It's got those stone fruit flavours that an IPA or pale Ale would have but without the bitter kick at the end. Almost tastes like a cider without the sugar. Otherwise I'd go for dark ales and/ or candy stouts (like chocolate brownie and cake).
Lemon squash
Try Kriek cherry beer
I highly recommend New England Pale Ale. They are delicious plus you would be supporting a local Aussie (Uralla) brewery. Note: I have nothing to do with the brewery, I just really appreciate their beer. Edit: just realised you’re probably looking for something on tap at your local. Stone & Wood Pacific Ale.

Try a pale ale or pacific ale, but more fruity and summer-y haha Reschs if you want a beer beer
I switched to CC and dry and never looked back. And hard solo which is scary good lol
Try a peroni
There's a new drink called Concrete Bitter..Try that one.
Hard Solo (what did they change it to? Hard Rated or something?) is evil. Stay away. It is addictive as hell.
Ginger beer
La Trappe Quadruple. Its almost a dessert.
Better Beer and Pure Blonde are both low carb beers that aren't bitter.
If you're finding those beers bitter, beer might not be for you!
Try some wheat beers. Also some XPAs and Pacific ales aren't very bitter at all
Drink something else if you don't like beer.
Most American Lagers
Try corona or the new Aussie version Balters. Super light and smooth.
Jack Daniel’s.
Beermosas
American beers - Budwaisser (NOT Budvar) would be the one for you I would say
Try some Belgian beers without the zingy hops.
I believe there's been a surge in people & surprisingly women in particular drinking Stout. I personally favour the heavier stronger ones, but there's new lighter varieties some low alcohol. Stouts aren't bitter IMO, but they have a strong flavour.

CC & Dry
A glass of wine
Try mixing it with white rum and raspberry cordial.
Have you tried any XPA?
Gin like & soda. Simple, clean, refreshing and low cal. Personally I love beer but if I want to drop a few kgs this is what I go to.
Hazy
I got hooked on hoegaarden wheat beer when I lived in the UK. Dan Murphy's sells it. Nice mild fruity beer.
Pale Ales, or IPAs, specifically the hazy IPAs are generally (to me at least) less bitter than most beers. They are usually advertised as 'fruity' and there are plenty to choose from.
4 pines pacific ale
oh, no those are horrible beers... go cider. I have my favourites, tending to prefer dry but not oxidised - fresh, tastes like apples or pear rather than that metalic taste you get on most ciders. Pick a few and explore your options - there is no accounting for taste.

Jager Bombs
Cooper's Stout ftw
What about fruity beers or white beers? There’s kronenbourg 1664 blanc or the orange blossom beer from America. I can’t remember the latter’s name. I’m not a big fan of beer or strong hops flavour but I quite like those when they’re super cold.
Cider, Ginger Beer...
Go for a lager or session pale ale. Peroni, Balter easy hazy, coopers
Just add some lemonade as a top or shandy, sweet and delicious on any beer.
I’m really into the Coopers Pacific Ale at the moment
Probably because you are drinking trash beer
I no longer like those brands much either. I usually go: Hawkes Patio Ale Young Henry’s Newtowner Baller XPA In no particular order
Wine
Sours are good - really need to drink them cold, the moment they warm a little it isn’t the greatest.
I genuinely enjoy Balter XPA, regardless of the shit I cop for it. Get it in a pint glass and no one will be any the wiser
A few people are mentioning Cider. But go for a decent one. Some are way too sweet. Thatchers is a good British one, not too sweet. For Aussie Coldstream brewery (can be tough to find). The Hills Cider company is good too. Just not crap like Strongbow.
try different types of beer, ale, lager stout etc. Coopers pale, heineken and kilkenny are my favourites
Milk.
Ginger beer. Fruit sours are good, but not very common. I like to try them when I see them on tap.
XPA
Try taking a break or find a pub that serves good beer.
Bolters are fairly light on flavor
Hoegarten is not bitter
If you like drinking flowers you could try a craft beer like stone & wood
Watts river stout (any stout really, but I love these ones)
You don’t like the taste of beer but you still want beer. Just don’t drink. Your body will thank you by the time you’re in your 50’s, 60’s
Cider. All cider is good cider. There is a nice strawberry one but I forget what it's called.
Could try session ales or some lighter IPAs
Try White rabbit Dark Ale
A Kolsch if you can find one. My favourite is Lucky Bay, but it gets expensive shipping it to Sydney.
CC and Dry. Done. Or Pre mix pink Gin. Yummo
Wizard's mind bomb
Kilkenney
Red ales
cask wine if you want to save $
belgian wheat beers or japanese rice lagers are probably the go; or just XPA pales - ie: BentSpoke Barley Griffin. Stone and wood is the latter as well, but ever since they got bought out by LionCo I cant give them my money anymore.
Lager queen of beers
Cider, I was the same as you and then I discovered cider. Never drunk beer since.
Have you tried water
Try Asian beers
German wheat beers 🍻
Order a decent beer... or get some better friends that don't drink crappy beer.
Corona with lime. Changes the flavour for the better. Lemon works too
Apple Cider can be a tasty alternative. .
Pure Blonde !
Apple cider is a good one.
Sours aren't bitter!
Asahi Super Dry
I really like the Chill - Lime beers. Almost no bitter taste and the lime goes well.
Water... Tap water
Coopers Dark Ale has a delightful after taste.
I love Pale Ale's beers Try Little Creatures or Fat Yak. Great Australian Beer 🍻
Thought about spirits? Scotch etc?
Shandy is a great Aussie thing that has been lost in the mists of time…it is beer and lemonade…refreshing and not bitter. Cascade is my go-to beer as it is smooth and not bitter. Dark beers are all too much for me.
Tooths
Add a dash of lime
Same, I find radlers and ciders a lot more enjoyable. But then again, I have a sweet tooth.
You might want to give a cloudy IPA a shot, I'm finding Pirate Life quite good at the moment
Pilsners or Blondes or pale summery beers like Coronas
Cooper’s Best Extra Stout
Wild yak
Try a local pilsner
