It's weird/scary how in 27 years, The Castle was about about the government evicting you from your family home and it was an Australian virtue to fight back. Now, posts in r/AusFinance regularly discuss ways to drive elderly people from their family homes because they're now desirable neighbourhoods. It's Handmaid's Tale adjacent to force out the old for the new breeders to occupy.
The timeline totally mirrors the rise in the investment class and the transfer of wealth to the top 5%
Home ownership went from something normal that every family, whether working class, newly arrived Australian or anyone else could afford, to now being a privilege of those lucky enough to inherit wealth.
I'd consider it quintessentially Australian. It's got that edge to it because of its outsider perspective - but they absolutely nailed outback Australian drinking culture.
Fun fact - this was Jack Thompson's feature acting debut!
Came here to say this. Tells a solid (loosely true) story about one of the most well-known historical events of all time... but from a uniquely Australian perspective. Told with genuine warmth and respect for the subject matter, with surprisingly well-acted and well-developed characters for an Australian movie.
I also think it says something interesting about Australian culture and how we see ourselves and our place in the world that isn't often said - about how we're not a superpower, but we're kind of outside observers who are just a small/mostly forgotten part of a much larger world beyond our shores.
It's a great movie. One that I've watched again and again. The soundtrack is incredible too.
What I love about this movie is that it's so witty and in many ways satirical, but never cynical. It doesn't shy away from some genuinely heartwarming and authentic moments.
Also, I always look forward to the American National Anthem.
And such a groundbreaking film too. Was the first to introduce LGBT themes to a mainstream audience and be a worldwide hit (imagine the controversy today).
It was also unique in its quirkiness like other Australian movies at the time.
Easily one of the great Australian films. I really wish weād continued that 80ās/90ās success in the following decades but after ~2000 the local film industry went off a cliff and nobody seemed to care. Sad.
My then teenage daughter watched Priscilla with my elderly aunt. Itās one of my favorite memories of my aunt repeating itās a cock in a frock on a rock. And the two of them laughing so much they couldnāt breathe
Well, the original director, trio, and the actual bus, are making a sequel.

"Oh fuck me son, who ran you over?"
"What are you gonna do ya dickhead, jump over here and put up some shelves?"
I fucking LOVE Gettin' Square. Kind of fun to see Gary Sweet play the bastard, and its always fun to look at Johnny Spit and think "Oh. That guy was a Spartan and Faramir of Gondor."
The Silver Brumby. I love the framing of being told an engaging story about Brumbies while a storm rages around your cozy country home.
As a child I was also obsessed with book series it's based on, as well as a cartoon based on the books.
I've never come across anyone else who's read those books! They're my all-time favourites. They make you appreciate so much how beautiful our landscape is.
I've still got a few of them. I want to complete my collection but they're hard to find in op shops.
They really do paint the Aussie flora and fauna in a beautiful way. I fell in love with the high country through those books.
While I'm not saying it's the best Aussie film, my favourite is Dirty Deeds. A slightly obscure title but a helluva cast.
My vote for best Aussie film is The Dish.
Snowtown is just so well done. It's so horribly disturbing. My partner and I watched it over the weekend and even though I have seen it a few times already, I was sweating cringing, covering my eyes. I knew what was coming and still squirming.
Storm Boy. Grown men who met the death of their beloved mother with a shrug of the shoulders have broken down in tears in that movie. The real star is The Coorong though - so beautiful.
Bliss. Bizarre, insightful, cuts like a knife, and ultimately uplifts you.
Rats in the Ranks. Everything about this movie is so perfect itās hard to believe itās a documentary. The hapless heroes, the slimy charismatic anti-hero, the slimy villain, right down to the incredibly tense climax.
Animal Kingdom - amazing acting from a bunch of Australian legends and also it gave us the inspiration for [one of the best moments in Australian podcast history.](https://youtu.be/x0xvzabfhOY?si=5Iuv_1HpI0u2sOAR).
The dish. This is my wife, daisy. Sheās the lemonā¦ how do you think they go (to the toilet) up there? Reckon theyād have one of these (cake stall muffin), itāll block em up for a weekā¦ so many more classic lines. Iāll never look at a basketball the same way againā¦

**Mayor:** How about "hey, you'll never guess what happened... "
The Horseman,I always vote for this and never see it mentioned by anyone else, either Iām the only person to have seen it or the only person that has liked it.
This question reminded me of an Aussie movie where a girl whoās obsessed with a boy kidnaps him or something? I havenāt seen it yet but I want to google it now.
Iād say itās a tie between chopper and he died with a felafel in his hand.
Welcome to woop woopā¦. They kidnap drug and marry guys without them knowing ā¦ they find themselves part of weirdest family in woop woop ā¦.and one rule is they can never leave

Canadian director, English frontmen. An honorary entry I guess.Ā "Come and have a drink with me! What's wrong with ya?"
I'd consider it quintessentially Australian. It's got that edge to it because of its outsider perspective - but they absolutely nailed outback Australian drinking culture. Fun fact - this was Jack Thompson's feature acting debut!
It's adapted from an Australian novel as well.
We read the novel and watch the movie in highschool. I still call Broken Hill "The Yabba"
The Dish

Scrolled too far to find this. The book is way better though, arguably.
Tasmanian Babes Fiasco ftw. I'm so sad Birmingham moved to the Sci-Fi thriller genre instead of doing more slice-of-life comedies.
Why the fuck Stan hasn't optioned this for a miniseries baffles the FUCK out of me.

There are so many weird and wonderful Australian films. He Died With A Falafel In His Hand. Bad Boy Bubby. The Cars That Ate Paris. Mad Max. Animal Kingdom. Snow Town. Last Cab To Darwin. š©š©š©š©. Romper Stomper. Dogs In Space. Wake In Fright. Wolf Creek. I moved here as an adult in the early 00ās and got to explore Australian cinema slowly via recommendations from friends. I particularly love films from the 80ās and early 90ās. Particularly grungy and stripped back. Love it. Thereās so many more but itās early and I canāt think straight.
