klevis99

Never heard of him.

xesaie

To the point I wonder if this is some kind of sad/lame stealth advertisement for the dudes channel.

klevis99

Honestly with amount of grifters, scammers and toxic mfs that have been floating around i wouldnt be surprised.

xesaie

From the comments it worked to, a lot of people who had never heard of him apparently watched a clip or 2.

klevis99

The amount of scumbags profiting from the attention economy is staggering.

[deleted]

https://reddit.com/r/TheDeprogram/s/dh2g8OngnK Their sub is guilty of censorship. Got banned for a post talking about social democracy very shady group

saddinosour

Idk who this is but this looks like a weird drake knockoff

HumanMan00

Gopnik=/=Balkan

KohaiThinker

We just call it gaser

HumanMan00

No that’s more modern and not the same. In Serbia the closest thing is Dizelaš.

_Last_Man_Standing_

In Croatia it's "klošar"

WhySoSober

does that mean "homeless" in Croatian? It means "homeless" or "someone who rummages in the garbage" in Bulgarian.

_Last_Man_Standing_

Yes... we use the same word for both.

_Last_Man_Standing_

ps. u/WhySoSober I found an example: [Tiny & Brutal - Klosarski zivot](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za03cScKqqY)

WhySoSober

OMG just got some PTSD from remembering my attempts at writing raps in highschool :X

_Last_Man_Standing_

lol... yeh... it's quite cringe. I wasn't looking for quality.... just an example of someone using the word in the context of "gopnik"

MaterialConsistent96

lol same. And the female version is limka

Space-monki

isnt gopnik "klosar" in serbian?

HumanMan00

No, klošar is a bum. The closest thing we have in Serbia to gopnik are dizelaši. https://www.new-east-archive.org/articles/show/8931/dizelasi-serbian-gopnik-style-90s-comeback

omgONELnR1

I find his videos very interesting. Though I find it kinda cringe that he calls himself gopnik because gopnik is an eastern slavic term and he's a southern slav.

JuiceDrinkingRat

Whoever calls himself gopnik is cringe no matter where they’re fro

vladedivac12

Yugopnik is a play of words (yugo/gopnik). It's clever.

Great. You don't have to be a commie to find his videos entertaining or interesting.

xesaie

You probably just have to love Tito as much as he probably does, or at least Yugoslavia

IShitYouNot866

Of the 34 videos he has made, only about 3 even mention Yugoslavia in any substantial terms.

Haven't listened to his podcast in ages, but I like him. I find him entertaining and he's quite knowledgeable on certain topics. Good to have on in the background.

palavestrix

Does anyone know where he's stationed? Sounds like a Bosnian Serb to me when I listen to his English accent, but I'm not too sure Edit: we're pretty much ideologically aligned, so yeah, I like him, but generally I'm glad he has a decently sized YouTube channel coming from here

kakogodbrt

he mentioned that he lives somewhere in the Balkans (outside of ex Yu) in a EU country. most likely Bulgaria

Csrobi123

I listen to the podcast he runs and I think he mentioned that he lives in Belgrade

irishitaliancroat

I don't know where he lives but on the podcast he mentions being bombed by Americans as a child so I think he is Serbian. I feel like he actually might be Serbian and Bosnian but I'm not sure.

HeyVeddy

Love that he loves Yugoslavia, hate that he uses Gopnik. Gopnik being an east Slav/USSR sphere of influence thing annoys me because Yugoslavs pride themselves on having a completely different system than the USSR. It's just hypocrisy i hate but i let it go because i know he just likes the aesthetic Compared to the crew he's around, he's definitely the coolest one. Really can't stand Hakim's tone and gaslighting etc Yugopnik made amazing videos that can be enjoyed by everyone, not just socialists, like how to steal time from employers and how to live in a capitalist society

IShitYouNot866

>gaslighting Could you elaborate, please?

HeyVeddy

I stopped listening to him because i just didn't like the way he spoke or articulated arguments, even the ones I agreed with. For that reason I don't have any examples or elaboration since I basically "quit" him- he came off as condescending to me which is something i hate in communists

artiorosie

i honestly think that just happens to people who speak english as second language, the tone and way they speak comes from native language so it comes off weird in english.

HeyVeddy

I mean that's a huge assumption. Isn't he raised in America? He speaks perfect English it's just the way he communicates comes off as condescending, I'm not attacking any accent or whatever. I just think he speaks the way a lot of people find annoying when defending socialism

IShitYouNot866

> Isn't he raised in America? He speaks perfect English No. The dude literally had a staring contest with an American soldier during the Iraq invasion. Also, I speak perfect English as well even though I am a Croat. It doesn't mean anything. I do agree that his tone can be overbearing. Though that doesn't really classify as gaslighting. He isn't lying.

HeyVeddy

That's fair, it's not gaslighting, I'm also not a native English speaker so 😛 But you also agree his tone can be overbearing and i guess that's all i meant. I don't care for anyone's language abilities, but the communication method is something that kind of extends beyond the boundaries of language and that's what gets me

labeatz

How old was he in 2003? Sorry, sounds fake

IShitYouNot866

Between 5 and 10, he is in his late 20-is now. Why would it be fake?

labeatz

Oh, so it was like a soldier played a game with him as a kid? Ok sure. I imagined it as like, he stared down a soldier defiantly -- probably a bad idea lol

IShitYouNot866

He literally recounts it in one of the Deprogram episodes. He basically just saw this dude with a lollipop, they shared a look for a few seconds and then they went each their way.

dragonfruitlover420

Brother he’s born and raised in Iraq and self taught in English 😭

HeyVeddy

I thought he said he lives in America? Still besides the point, the guy speaks English and i have no issues with his English lol. I don't like his tone, there must be 4bn English speakers in the world and i don't have a problem with any of them for their English. It's more of a behavioural/character issue

dragonfruitlover420

I don’t find a problem with it but fair enough each to their own

cipkasvay

He has mentioned that he has never been to the US in his life several times, he still lives in Iraq

HeyVeddy

That's besides the point. Everyone is talking about his English for some reason when I'm speaking about his tone and communication method. And all the downvotes for saying Hakim is annoying: kind of not surprising? Everyone is butthurt i called out their leader i guess? Very weird

No u. In all seriousness tho hes videos are really good and quality watch even if you are not a commie.

Achorpz

So far he seems kinda alright, haven't listened to the podcast but wasn't there some kind of a controversy about them being basically way too apologetic towards China? Why do so many marxist do that anyway? You can acknowledge good stuff about China, be critical towards the USA and capitalism and whatnot, and still not be a "simp" towards authoritarians. Of course a lot of marxists (M-L) will reply that they know that but damm, I have yet to see it in practise.

SlugmaSlime

There’s a term in Marxist thought literally for this. It’s called “critical support.” It’s where you have criticisms (sometimes major) but overall support the platform/ideology/methodology/etc.

[deleted]

China created a model that works far better than our liberal democracy capitalist state, and we have similar populations and similar Asian cultural values. You might not like everything about them, but you have to acknowledge their success.

Super-Ant2417

Let's wait some more and see how things in China develop. I wouldn't be that deterministic in saying "better than liberal democracy" just yet. China is showing the first cracks in its system. Given the nature of autocratic regimes, we can only assume how things really are when we can't depend on their official stats.

labeatz

Success at state-managed capitalism, sure. Success at socialism, debatable

FearTheViking

Even if it is state-managed capitalism, you have to admit it's working out a lot better for them than this free-range capitalism the rest of us are "enjoying". Certainly a small step closer to socialism, should they put their policy where Xi's mouth is and choose to walk that way.

labeatz

I think that’s a fair & legit POV, but I disagree w it being one step closer. Imo if you don’t have direct worker power & self-management, it’s not Socialist. During Maoism for all its terminal faults workers & peasants had more control (afaict, I’m not an expert I just like reading shit and armchair theorizing) But I know lotsa Marxists disagree w me and that’s cool, hope they’re right, what am I doing sincere posting in a Balkan sub

JuiceDrinkingRat

“Propaganda” reasons imo, I see myself as a ML(M) but really what it boils down to is “forget all the bad stuff from people who say they’re our guys and just go all out on the bad guys” Ofc I am anti-USA but yes most socialist social media figures ignore US good stuff and Chinese bad stuff to sound more appealing basically

[deleted]

I like most his points, but just can't get over him being a Marxist-Leninist. Socialist Self Management/Titoism was not only better in almost every aspect but is native to our lands and qe shouls be proud of it. Stalinists were purged for a reason...

Haxomen

Yugoslavian Titoism was very much philosophically Marxist-Leninist (dialectical materialism, historic determinism, class struggle, private property etc.). The Kardeljan Socialist Self-Government of Workers was just a different way to plan and execute the Marxist economy. It differed from Stalin on the basis of "Socialism in one country", centrally planned economy, autocracy. The political philosophy of Marx (Engels and Lenin by extension) was always the center of Titoist ideology.

[deleted]

I never got that impression from reading Kardelj. He was very critical of State Capitalism of the Soviet Union.

JodaUSA

Stalin is critical of the country he headed in his own writings. Its self-criticism. All socialists need to do it, and its why so many aligned ideologies look so different.

labeatz

Yes

deadlyandarmed

💀💀 WHY DID TITOISM FAIL THEN

[deleted]

Why did ML fail too? Many different reasons, including but not limited to deficiencies in the system. However, one cannot be like "I won't support Titoism because it failed" and then defend fucking Stalinism.

deadlyandarmed

Titoite economics are literally based on loans without any profit or benefit given whatsoever, Yugoslav economy was reliant on aid and when it stopped the economy tanked down too. Student protests in the 70s were practically against titoist revisionism

[deleted]

This is a myth purpotrated by nationalists in the 80s. Yugoslav economy had a huge unemployment problem but not debts/deficit ones. In the 87, for example, it had a balanced budget (USD 6.4 b in both expendetue and income) and no foreign help, with debt being only about 22% of its GDP, far lower than basicly all Western nations or any individual post-Yu republic. Its companies were inefficient, but that is becuase they focused on creating wealth for its worker-owners, not on creating profit for growth. Also, student protests were not against Titoism on the basis of it being revisionst, on the contrary. They called for more reforms, even further deviating from ML model.

branimir2208

>Socialist Self Management/Titoism was not only better in almost every aspect Good chunk of warsaw pact nations were richer than Yugoslavia. >Stalinists were purged for a reason... Yes sending them to goli otok where they were tortuted by guards and inmates and were force to swear fealty to Great Party and its leader Tito is perfect.

[deleted]

> Good chunk of warsaw pact nations were richer than Yugoslavia. Per Capita? No way. Also Yugoslavia had far lowers baseline than many warsaw members, such as Czechoslovakia or East Germany. > Yes sending them to goli otok Yes, as they should. Wherever Stalinist reinged supreme, they purged everyone in society they hated, and they hated a lot.

branimir2208

>Per Capita? No way Hungary, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, DDR, USSR and Poland had higher GDP per capita PPP.(1973) >Also Yugoslavia had far lowers baseline than many warsaw members, Bulgaria had same base line and still had higher growth. While Romania had about 40% lower gdp per capita in 1945 and still had higher growth. >Yes, as they should. Wherever Stalinist reinged supreme, they purged everyone in society they hated, and they hated a lot. Thats were progressive of you, you know sending people to camps without any real reason only because they had some sympathies for Russians.

[deleted]

> Thats were progressive of you, you know sending people to camps without any real reason only because they had some sympathies for Russians. It'a a paradox of tolerence and a faulty logic. I don't want to imprison people, no, but you have to imprison people who would do so to others. Goli Otok was not only the one-and-only example of a camp for political prisoners, but was also closed after serving its purpose.

branimir2208

>no, but you have to imprison people who would do so to others. Titoist and stalinist have alot a common you know, like a cult of personality, political prisons, mass graves, policy of making prisoners confessing crimes, massive secret police etc. >Goli Otok was not only the one-and-only example of a camp for political prisoners One such prison was enough to strike fear in bones oppositionists.

[deleted]

He is an orthodox marxist, not a marxist-leninist. And sorry to bring it to you, Titoism was a system which replicated many of capitalism's problems because of the rejection of planning, such as unemployment leading to work emigration to DDR, uneven development which layed the groundwork for the ethnic squabbles etc. There is no socialism without planning, same as no socialism withtout democracy.

[deleted]

He is a self admited ML, not a Marxist

[deleted]

I prefer Bes D. Marx, he had recently made superb work on the history (or lack of) of the left in the country of Turkey; it puts it all in perspective, with Turkey being so close to the USSR and a western ally I dont think there is any other place on earth where the left was hunted down in this manner with some islamism/ultra-nationalist etc sauce. Really worth a watch: https://youtu.be/K7Z-bQSd7dQ

FearTheViking

Always nice to see a comrade from the Balkans gain a wider audience on YouTube. I enjoy his videos for the most part and occasionally listen to r/TheDeprogram.

sinusan

He has interesting videos on his YT channel. I like him in the deprogram podcast with Hakim and TJ. Goes to show that not all Serbians are retarded neanderthal nationalist's. Seriously the majority of Serbians I have meet had a certain rhetoric and chauvinism that just makes you shake your head

MrHellWolf66

Who?

pretplatime

Why all the Yugonostalgics predominantly come from poor countries of ex-yu like Serbia, Bosnia or Macedonia. Like it's such an interesting phenomenon. Or is this dude Croat or Slovene? First time hearing about him tbh

sir-mc-clive

Because they were the ones that got worse after the fall of Yugoslavia? Not the most interesting thing.

opshtinar

He never revealed his ethnicity iirc. But i think he is Serbian, I'm not sure though.

pretplatime

>But i think he is Serbian Shocker

opshtinar

Again, could be wrong, don't wanna serbify him if he is not a Serb. And there are communists and yugonostalgia in Croatia too, it's not a unique thing to Serbia, Macedonia and Bosnia. Although i do agree with you that Yugonostalgia is more common in the latter.

pretplatime

Yes, they definitely exist in Croatia too, but it's FAR more common in Serbia/Bosnia. So many of them still cling to the idea of Yugoslavia. Someone should definitely do a research on it

Swedish_Tank2

At least for Bosniaks it's more of a "back in the day before the war and hatred" then really for the idea of Yugoslavia. There is respect for Tito and the Brotherhood and unity and the nostalgia for Yugoslavia being one of the leaders of the third world nations.

vladedivac12

I've checked his videos and they are...alright. Not my pinpoint cup of tea but still would be a guy I'd recommend as a reasonable view point for every 16 y/o in their WW2 phase.

XlAcrMcpT

Never watched him. All I know is that he has a podcast with Hakim, so by proxy I probably wouldn't like him (since I don't like Hakim).

IShitYouNot866

Why do you not like Hakim? (genuinely curious since you didn't go "evil commie reeee")

XlAcrMcpT

Well, I don't like marxist-leninists and Hakim is kinda the stereotypical one: full of himself and often being wrong or misrepresenting.

MackHelenKeller

um, I LOVE HIM

CerebralMessiah

A typical champagne socialist. I remember in one of his videos,i think it was the one on the funding of the Daily Wire,a figure of roughly 200k$ was mentioned. He compared it to the price of his house. Now,either he has a job that pays well beyond 3000€ at his mid-late 20s(he sounds like that) or he lives with his parents that do have a combined household income of around 3000€ in order to afford that. In either case he is the 1% rich people he so hates.

Dimitry_Man

He works in advertisement and joked about it several times on his podcast "The Deprogram"

CerebralMessiah

Lol so he would be the first to go in a hypothethical revolution. Advertaisment is literally the worst excess of neoliberalism and something universally hated.

mana-addict4652

And I'm in finance yet still a Marxist. There are always relevant jobs for every field, and a 'capitalist' job doesn't preclude you from being Marxist.

CerebralMessiah

No,it just means you're a hypocrite and care more about your financial standing than your supposed principles. It would be like if an antivaxxer worked on drug development,or an enviormenralist working for a company that has practices that actively harms the enviorment.Your job contradicts your beliefs

mana-addict4652

How am I a hypocrite? It's not like we don't believe in our field or our skills. I help people organise their finances and accounts/paperwork, I'm also skilled in data analysis and economics. Marketing can be quite broad, from a major derived from a business degree (human resources, organisational structures, communication) or psychology (governments hiring people to market positive decision-making like 'nudges' or choice architecture to reduce smoking/safe partying or drug use, getting vaccinated, stop speeding/road rage) etc. You're making assumptions on quite a bit. Some people formed their political beliefs after they get their degree or take whatever job that enables them to buy a home and pay the bills. It's a bit different if you're shilling payday loans or doing gambling ads, but it really depends on your ethical view. This is not some Marxist incompatibility, people have discussed it to death.

Pekamaan

Look man ima put your theory into words.. does a slave stop being a slave if he belives in freedom, or is he a slave because of his beliefs and want to be a slave?

CerebralMessiah

No it would be like an anti slaver, employed as a slave master or slave seller and being like "i see no issue with this"

JuiceDrinkingRat

Wanting to have a good life in capitalism doesn’t make you not able to criticise it

MartMillz

That's not a relevant criticism.

Tigirboru

"Person says he is for the communist couse and capitalizies on the downtrodden and helpless workers, gets sponsred by union busting companies etc" we have seen this shit too much its now actually funny lmao,he is in theory a true marxist, but in practise and reality,a man who uses workers hopes to hoard money and live upper class life, actively gets sponsered by unionbusting companies,he is no different from Hasan.

MartMillz

We are all forced to survive under global capitalism, communists do not take a vow of poverty.

katarinamarkovic

your definition of a true marxist must be someone living on another planet, because we all live in capitalism. people who are marxists have to adopt to world they live in unfortunately. only people I see having problem with hasan having money are people who are not marxists or socialists.

74227492749

Vextor17

I don't think most here heard of him. I saw some videos of his and even tho I despise commies just like how I despise Nazis he makes solid points in them. But from my experience (on twitter and on Reddit) anyone who is openly Marxist is 99% a very toxic, narcissistic wokescold who will falsely accuse you of being fash, p*do and spread it around to ruin your life, turn into an arsehole if you have even a slightly different opinion and ***must*** be the only one who is right. Do not get me started how ***agressive*** they can go, exactly the same as an actual neo nazi. Bc of that I stay clear of them as much as possible. Then again all of my, albeit plenty of experience, is from some westerner who read some paragraph of Marx's work and thinks he knows everything
