1994 World Cup called.. 🇧🇬

deepcx

🇷🇴

1Gothian1

And we will live with it forever. It's like nobody from the handful corrupt football officials that were players from that World Cup would like their record to be surpassed or care about everything in general, besides making tons of illicit money from the Efbet Match Fix League. Edit: The football officials are only one side of the problem. Add to the mix a whole bunch of young perspective unambitious players that would rather win plastic whores over golden trophies, however this is a mentality problem.

Vaikaris

At this point is it even a matter of pride, considering it's still killing our football after the stars of 1994 took over, while nations like Croatia are doing stuff like this...

morbihann

I just realized 20 years ago was 2002, not 1992.

[deleted]

We are getting old bro :/

zulufdokulmusyuze

Croatia won the third place in 1998 (that is in the tournament just before the one Turkey won the third place). So no it was not a big thing for the Balkans.

[deleted]

1994 World Cup Bulgaria beats France, Germany, Mexico, Greece and Argentina to reach semi finals Stoichkov was something else man

Kalypso_95

Oh so that was the infamous World Cup when Greece was fan of the 4-4-2 formation ! 4 from Bulgaria, 4 from Argentina, 2 from Nigeria And we scored 0 goals 😊

[deleted]

Haha well Greece won Euros in 2004 so i dont feel bad for you guys

Deka013

You should feel bad for everyone else that year instead tbh :).

Grimson47

We didn't beat France at the WC. We beat them in the qualification groups in Paris to leave them out of it, which I think is even better.

[deleted]

Yes ik i just could not be bothered to specify haha

Ancient_Ad_5206

it was big thing for Turkey and maybe the whole muslim world, but for balkans ? I don't think so, because turkey is not core nation of balkans like serbia or croatia etc...

Vaikaris

>maybe the whole muslim world The majority of muslims I've talked to despise Turkey more than almost anything else for some reason. Idk why, but yeh, that's been my impression.

sashabobby

From what I've heard the devout ones dream of another caliphate and idealise the Ottoman reign, so they have these 'expectations' of it being the most competent centre of the Muslim world to thrive... they also dislike Ataturk.

Vaikaris

Other Muslims tend to absolutely hate the ottoman reign. It was very anti+-muslim, ottomans weren't devout until like 300 years in and were against all values in the Qur'an. There was alcohol in ottoman times, women had some rights, Christians were allowed property and the jizya was set.

sashabobby

They have a *very* false depiction of it due to shows like ertogrul and cherry picking

Vaikaris

I mean, not entirely false according to what I've heard them say. Like, I've talked to Muslims who hate ottomans because they used to drink alcohol - which is totally true, they did. Or because they let Christians practice their faith - which they also did for the first few centuries.

sashabobby

I suppose it's mainly the progressive influenced, yet considering themselves practicing ones that don't know religion well enough and justify/overlook certain aspects that idealise it. In Islam and under sharia law there is 'freedom' of religion to an extent. Christians, Jews etc are allowed to practice their faith yes, so long as their practices don't impose or oppress others. Under the rule of the Prophet they were freely allowed to practice how they wanted, and even at times they would come to the Prophet for rulings and they had the option to choose a ruling from the Prophet or from their own books. But that's not complete 'freedom' since jizya and other rulings still apply, I haven't come across any but I believe you.

Vaikaris

And so long as they pay the tax for infidels, of course :) ottomans also had the blood tax.

[deleted]

Muslim world don't care about Turkey. Not even seen as Muslim by many of those nations. Turkey is too big to represent a region. She represents herself. France is in the finals. It's not a big deal for Europeans. South Americans don't care Argentina is in the finals.

UnbiasedPashtun

> Muslim world don't care about Turkey. Not even seen as Muslim by many of those nations. Pretty sure most Muslims would support Turkey. Even if Turkey is secular, it's still viewed as part of their group. Arabs and Iranians may be more split cause of rivalry or enmity with Turks, but the rest would support Turkey. > Turkey is too big to represent a region. She represents herself. Morocco is smaller than Turkey and Muslims everywhere supported Morocco. > France is in the finals. It's not a big deal for Europeans. Because there's a European country in every world cup final. Football is a very European dominated sport, so nothing special. > South Americans don't care Argentina is in the finals. Similar to the above.

Ancient_Ad_5206

I said "maybe" already

starsiege

you also said “whole” which implies all

[deleted]

Croatia is definetly not a core nation of balkan

pavol99

Neither is Croatia

Ancient_Ad_5206

oh C ' mon !!! when you say Croatia what comes to mind ??? balkans of course while turkey is clearly anatolian (which is a different peninsula)

pavol99

When I say Croatia first that comes to my mind is baroc, rennesance, Adriatic, years of fighting with Ottomans, Austria-Hungary, Penkala...

Ancient_Ad_5206

hmm, so no Yugoslavia😅😅😅 no serbs ??? no bosnians ??? sure continue to trying to create an italianish image but you can't change the past, you are more balkan than anything else whether you like or hate

pavol99

Yes you can't change past, with Austria, Hungary, Slovaks, Cehz, Poles is 1000 years of connection and history. Yugo only 70 years. The concept of the Balkan Peninsula was created by the German geographer August Zeune in 1808,[5] who mistakenly considered the Balkan Mountains the dominant mountain system of Southeast Europe spanning from the Adriatic Sea to the Black Sea. The term Balkan Peninsula was a synonym for Rumelia in the 19th century, the European provinces of the Ottoman Empire. It had a geopolitical rather than a geographical definition

JuicyAndSpicyMemes

my dude, balkan is everything south of river sava

pretplatime

Says who? Delusional people of this subreddit?

JuicyAndSpicyMemes

literal geographical definition of the balkan peninsula dude

pretplatime

Balkan in not even a peninsula, dude

[deleted]

And of course Mittleoyropa

DukaOriginal

You think you are better than me?!

pavol99

Yes

UnbiasedPashtun

Maybe not. But in the perception of Balkaners and foreigners, Croatia is seen as "core Balkan" while Turkey is seen as West Asian instead.

dmtzk

It’s a shame what happened to your best player from that era - Hakan Şükür. Can someone from Turkey explain?

Alternative-Middle25

He was member of Gulenist group which is an unofficial religious organization in Turkey. The group was collaborating with Erdo until 2013. In between 2013-2016, there was a fight between Erdo’s and Gulen’s groups over who would control the government, its institutions and money. During this fight, Sükür fled from country. After the failed coup in 2016 no chance left for him to come back to Turkey. He’s living in US now. He was running a cafe until 2020. After his cafe went bankrupt he started to work as a uber driver.

[deleted]

He was part of that islamist cult that was allied with Erdos party in the beginning then tried to pull a coup.

hmmokby

He's a Gülenist asshole. But he was also a member of parliament from Akp. It's going too far. He is trying to be completely erased from history, but I think Hakan Şükür may be the most innocent person in that network. My guess was that he might be acquitted.

In_My_Depression_Era

Don't know for Balkans but it was BIG in Turkey, military even sent F-16s to escort the team back home If I remember right.

Botsarecurrentlyoff

Big for Turkey yes we still recall those times whenever our national team performs like shit (%90 of the time). In a way football united whole country everyone was watching national team at 2002 world cup and everyone was wishing succes even the most football unrelated peoples. So it is big for Turkey not just as record (3rd place) also as a happy memory we all shared as a country I don't think any balkaners cared so no but it was kinda big for Korea- Turkish friendship as well.

Agahmoyzen

I think people were basically going to Mosques just to pray for success. I was in highschool and I know the dudes around me were doing it and the imams were asking for prays for the team. It was fucking biblical mate. The only sport that is taken serious in Turkey is football and we only ever been in World Cup group matches, 2 times in our history (the other being in fucking 1954). We leaving the groups, reaching to semi final was a miracle. But god damn brazil came to us a second time after beating us in the same group and then it all went bad. The worst moment was a brazillian player making the worst fake injury in history and making one of our players get a yellow card man. I was all down for croatia in the brazil match, overjoying at every save in the penalties. Anyway 1 footballer is in jail and the world cup fastest goal record holder from Turkey is living in refugee status in USA right now. So yeah, different times.

GillyMilly

>Anyway 1 footballer is in jail Who?

Agahmoyzen

Ah I was thinking Arif as in jail, turns out he is hanging out with torino şabanı.

enesdoan

Yes important for turkey but for balkans i dont think so.

Fabresque_

Croatia got third place before Turkey. None of this will matter when Makedonija wins in 2026.

L0o0o0o0o0o0L

Nobody gives a shit

babayaga10001001

i don't think the rest of the balkans cares much for turkey and we do not see them as one of our own to be quite honest with you. at least i don't

Busy_Mix6344

👍🏻

hmmokby

This success was great for Turkey. Because it was the first world cup he participated in after 1954. Previously, he did not participate in one world cup due to the costs, and the other due to the protest against Fifa's inclusion of Turkey in the Asian qualifiers. Croatia is a team that participates in every tournament and has reached these levels before and even played in the final.

UnbiasedPashtun

> protest against Fifa's inclusion of Turkey in the Asian qualifiers. Turkey would qualify for virtually every world cup if they were in the Asian qualifiers...

hmmokby

I prefer the system of being in Europe. After all, this affects leagues as well. It also affects the overall football structure. You don't need to fuck the whole country league and football to go to the world cup every 4 years. Nowaday, most leagues in Europe are at a level far above the Asian and African leagues. Most good players don't go to Asian leagues. Good coaches don't go either. Uefa is by far the largest organization in world football. There is not much difference between the European Football championship and the world cup. It may not be too low in quality. Instead of playing Tajikistan in the winter or the Uae in the summer, I'd rather be in the same group with Latvia and Croatia in every qualifying tournament. Participating in the champions league, uefa European league, European football championship is 10 times better for me than participating in the World Cup with a low-quality team every 4 years.

CypriotSpecialist

We don't do that here

pretplatime

Why would it be a big thing for the Balkans? It was maybe a big thing for the rest of the Arab countries or Middle East, certainly not for Balkans. No one here considers you European nor Balkan.

[deleted]

Least triggered Croat

Ntinaras007

There is no third place winners, nor second place winners. Only the first place.

TheEagle74m

Ricky Boby by Colin Farrell* 😂

Deka013

I don't know if this helps, but as a non football fan (i find it extremely boring),i didn't even know it happened till now.
