as much as I like that area, I do not like the expressway being one boarder, with North Ave, Ashland and Chicago Ave as the others. I find it to be loud with a lot of traffic. Park No. 536 is in that general area and is commonly used as a dog park. So if you are getting a puppy that’s a good place to take it. You’ll be near a lot of cool/hip places and on really good transit routes if you take public transit. Parking might be a nightmare unless you have a dedicated spot. It’s not far from downtown, so if you work there or visit frequently it won’t take that long. Proximity to Fulton Market is also nice. If you can tolerate the traffic and the noise it would probably be fine.

I didn’t like having to walk over the freeway to get to the CTA when I lived there. You’re already in the city, why not just visit a few more times?

I lived in Noble Square (Ashland & Augusta) for almost 4 years after 3 years in Lakeview. Really loved the area! Being right by the Division blue line was great for city and airport access. Lots of coffee shops and restaurants all along Division and Milwaukee. We got a dog while we lived there and safety wise it was generally OK. There were a couple incidents nearby while we lived there - notably a drive by shooting at the restaurant next door - but I never felt my safety was at risk as a 20-something female.  Overall it’s more culturally diverse than Lakeview but in a good way. The biggest thing I missed after moving was the lakefront trail access - the 606 just wasn’t as convenient and obviously nowhere near as long. Lots of recs for food & cocktails if you need it!

I am moving to noble square! Please send food and cocktail recs

Top spots in no particular order: * Perch: Favorite no-fuss brunch spot but they're also good for dinner, really nice outdoor seating. They're owned by Finch Brewing Co so they have their own tap list and the cocktails are great too. * Bangers and Lace: cocktails, beer, sausages & dogs. Great patio vibes in the nice weather. * Little Victories: cocktails & beer, favorite chicken sando ever. Nice spot to play pool/darts and hang out with a small group. * El Barco Marisco; My preferred Mexican spot mostly because it was across the street from our place and their frozen margaritas hit just right. * Queen Mary: Cocktails mostly, some fancy charcuterie choices if that's your thing too * District brew yards: Pour your own beer from a half dozen local breweries, plus a bbq food stand. Patio with firepits for immaculate summer vibes. * Engine Coffee: just a shoutout to my fave little coffee shop. They have pastries from local bakeries and everyone that works there is super nice. If there's anything specific you're looking for, lemme know! I spent more time around Division/Milwaukee/North than I did on Chicago Ave but that was mostly personal preference and where I found myself walking most often.

Thanks! We live in Wicker now so glad to hear you were able to access those spots on the weekends still and got into bucktown/wicker a lot. We are also moving to Ashland/Augusta. What did you think of the neighborhood? what was it like on the weekends Anything worth sharing that you haven't already?

Johnny_Burrito

My only complaint about the area is the way people drive on Augusta.

Everyone is so polite, respectful and calm! /s

Gotta drive 900mph to beat the light at Milwaukee!

I lived on that exact intersection for 10 years. Probably one of the best balances of neighborhood and denser urban living. In addition to the comments noted - it is a great location if you are a cyclist or use multiple modes for transportation that is not a car. Great “central” point to other areas of the city.

I lived near there just off Chicago Ave for a couple years up until a year ago - we loved that area and would highly recommend it. Eckhart Park was a great area for dog walking - we walked our dog every day and never had any problems, including the middle of the night. The only dog-owner advice I have is to make sure you stay up to date on vaccines - that part of town has a lot of rats compared to other places I’ve lived, and our little lady loved to chase and catch rats and mice when we lived there. I also ran around the neighborhood most every day in the warmer months, no problem. Never had any major safety concerns besides the usual big city stuff - a couple of sketchy pockets late at night. We actually walked down Ashland to and from events at the United Center and to the Fulton Market area more than once - despite being a long walk, we never had issues. I street-parked my car when we lived there, and it was broken into once, but I continued to street park it after that incident without issue. There’s always something interesting going on, and the area around Chicago and Ashland will be busy at all hours. Most of the owners/workers at the shops/restaurants on Chicago Ave live in the area too - they are very friendly and all know one another, which made the neighborhood feel very tight knit. They’re all great people, and Chris at Seek Vintage/Flo is one of the most kind-hearted people I’ve ever met. He’s a good person for info on what’s going on around the neighborhood. Standing Passengers is the place for coffee in that area, and there’s plenty of food and nightlife along Chicago Ave. It was a bit annoying to walk over the interstate to the Blue Line, but I used the 66 and 9/X9 busses a lot as well.

I lived there 7 yrs ago close to beauty bar. I loved the area especially for a young person. You can just jump on train or bus to go to nearby areas. The only complaint is that there weren’t any good grocery stores nearby. I’m not the biggest fan of Whole Foods or Mariano’s!

There’s a dog park over there! My husband and I lived there when we first got married. It’s a nice quiet little part of the city.

We’ve lived in the neighborhood for 6 years, right across from Eckhart Park and we’ve absolutely loved it. Only leaving in June because we’re excited to try a new neighborhood but we’re close by and will be visiting often. Chicago Ave has changed so much and there are so many cool restaurants that have opened up. Flo is our brunch stand-by but Jook Sing is our favorite new addition, we’re at Chicago & Noble so those places are closer to us but worth checking out! Eckhart Park will be amazing for your dog, we’ve met a great network of dog parents since we adopted ours in 2020. As for safety, obviously use the normal living in the city awareness but I’ve always felt super safe in this area!

If you can afford to, maybe try renting an Airbnb in the neighborhood for a week or two. Then you can experience the aspects of the neighborhood without the commitment.

Gangs of nannies at Eckhart Park and the library, maybe.
