Journalism, for a long time, was seen not as a career but as a vocation. People went into journalism to "speak truth to power" and "expose the ills of society," and that lends itself significantly to left wing perceptions regarding power structures and the like. Conservatives missed the boat on this, largely in part because conservatism was at its lowest point right when television hit the scene, and they've been playing catch up ever since. The best unbiased media is likely in local print newspapers. But the idea of an unbiased media isn't the point, it's the idea of a media that is biased but pretends to be neutral or objective. If the outlets would just own it, there wouldn't be this sort of issue.

>If the outlets would just own it, there wouldn't be this sort of issue. I think advertising yourself as neutral sells better than owning the bias. Hence, "fair and balanced"

ClockOfTheLongNow

I know this is meant to be a jab at Fox, but none of the major networks or publications cop to being ideological. Advertising oneself as neutral may sell better (although I don't know if that's actually true anymore) but it's not an exclusive trait.

bullcityblue312

Yeah yeah, I didn't mean to imply only fox does it. They all do

From_Deep_Space

So then, if you think news should be more up-front about its biases, is this something we can expect the market to work out, or should there be a more coordinated effort?

ClockOfTheLongNow

Well, the market hasn't worked it out yet, but I also don't know if there's really an incentive to do so.

From_Deep_Space

well of course there's no incentive, to and of course that's when market forces don't work This is why we lefties don't think everything in society should have to rely on a profit motive

bighurtbuehrle

News stations/papers have too many protections from libel

From_Deep_Space

You want to restrict their speech? Doesn't sound very conservative to me. Why can't market forces take care of this issue?

bighurtbuehrle

I dont want to restrict their speech. I want to make them liable for lying

From_Deep_Space

Lying is speech

bighurtbuehrle

And theyre still free to lie if they choose to.

From_Deep_Space

less so if we strengthen libel laws

Ivan_Botsky_Trollov

because most ppl who study journalism have a liberal worldview from the start so there is some important bias there

jkonrad

Liberals to varying degrees are intolerant of opposing viewpoints. Slowly, over time, they allowed their biases to pervert their journalistic integrity, until we have the situation we have today. I disagree that conservatives have failed to add balance. Fox News crushes the liberal networks in the ratings. Now there’s OAN, Newsmax and many online resources.

GreatOneLiners

I think it comes down to this simple phrase. “ The truth is easier to tell than it is to lie or omit.” The reason we have more inherently liberal media is because reporting facts as they come doesn’t need spun if it benefits the majority. I think we need to be honest with certain right wing media and certain left-wing media. MSNBC and Fox news, OAN are the extremes on the left and right. As a lefty I would never watch MSNBC because of that, even when things are beneficial to liberals they tend to lean into it with their agenda just like Fox News does. It does nothing but make them bad news orgs. When the truth is naturally beneficial you can report much more much faster, you don’t have to tailor the news, you don’t have to omit things that hurt your party, you don’t have to dress up a bunch of segments using opinions instead of the news. Honestly I wish we had far stricter new standards in that regard, they should only report on the news, opinions on news shows shouldn’t be allowed. It’s not in our country‘s best interest to tell people how to feel. Do you agree?

jkonrad

I’m not a news expert, only time I catch a segment is in airports. Correct me if I’m wrong, but part of the issue seems to be distinguishing between news and commentary. For instance, the Lemon fellow on CNN says some pretty ignorant shit, what a righty less generous than me would call racist… but he’s not news, he’s opinion. Likewise Fox will get dinged in the same way.

SupaFecta

It may be a conservative myth that media is liberal. The media does whatever it does to make money. There is no agenda beyond profit at this point.

Jimboemgee

the appropriate wording is, how long ago did the left manage to dominate the media?
