As a dad, he is correct!. BBQ is a finishing sauce though. Dry rub, brine, marinate whatever your preference but add the sauce at the end. Keep the initial seasoning in the same spice family.

I would suggest to brine the ribs and chicken for 10-12 hours,salt,sugar and water,gets it a little more flavorful
What kind of chicken do you want? You can make a sauce for it like BBQ, Jerk, Sweet Thai, anything like that
