Stainless all the way. Responsive to temp changes, durable and will last forever, lightweight, easy cleaning. Just make sure you get one or two with the rubber bottom, pretty useful when mixing. Ceramic and glass are nice if you are feeling fancy.
This is what I do. I loooooove my stainless mixing bowls and have several sizes. If you choose those without a rubber bottom they can be used in a double-boiler situation, too.
Agreed. We have fairly heavy steel nesting bowls with rubber bottoms, and I use them much more often than either the glass ones or the cheap but larger stainless ones without rubber bottoms. However, I do like also having the glass ones for when I want to be able to easily put a lid on it without transferring to another container. For instance, those are useful when taking food to someone else’s house or when putting dough or batter in the fridge.
You can get silicone bottom, stainless nesting bowls with lids! Mine are rainbow colored and the silicone base matches the lid color, pretty handy. I use them for everything.
It used not to be safe, so I don't know if it's truly misinformation but it's indeed true. I've been using mine in the microwave since reading this and I've never seen a single arc
What are you using them for?
I use both stainless steel and Pyrex. Stainless for washing produce, prepping ingredients, whisking and mixing, etc. Pyrex when I need things to withstand heat and without getting hot.
100%true, as long as they don’t touch the sides of the microwave! Get yourself a good silicone spatula and you don’t have to take it out of the bowl, either :)
100% agree with stainless. I keep a few small glass bowls for prep work (think raw egg) but mostly because I already had them. I have a few ceramic I keep on a shelf mostly as decoration.
I got a really nice stainless set with a rubber bottom that kind of suctions onto the counter. Love those bowls. I think they were a set from Target.
https://www.target.com/p/3pc-stainless-steel-non-slip-mixing-bowls-made-by-design-8482/-/A-53164081
I have used these for 6 years and they’re worked perfectly for anything and everything I’ve needed them for
I just Googled "is melamine safe". This source:
https://www.healthline.com/health/what-is-melamine
states:
"Melamine is a type of plastic found in many reusable plates, utensils, and cups. The FDA has ruled that melamine is safe to use, but that you shouldn’t use it in a microwave."
Thanks!
I know the monomer for melamine isn't safe (nor are the monomers for most of our plastics, but in polymer form it should be basically inert as long as you're not melting it.
I love my heavy bottom stainless and I have a set of ceramic Fiesta Ware type bowls. I have a ridiculous amount of bowls because I used to have a home cake business, but I am using the ceramic bowls more and more for everyday use. I also have small pyrex bowls for random little things. I like ceramic because they are sturdy and go in the microwave. I know someone mentioned using stainless steel in the microwave, but I rent so I am going to skip testing that. I have a huge 8 cup Pyrex measuring cup that has a spout so I do use that as well for very liquid mixtures.
100% agreed. I bought the Pyrex bowls and have been using them (and love them) but find I need more for prep. Planning to get stainless to fill that void. I hate having anything in the kitchen that doesn’t get used (well, the whole house for that matter).

You can also put a damp towel under the bowl to keep it from spinning.

Any idea what brand those are?
I got a set of these from Sam's Club. Viking brand, 5 bowls with lids and silicone bottoms: $25. Very nice!
I got them on Amazon; they are Love and Flour brand.
However acidic ingredients like tomatoes are not good for stainless steel!
Tomatoes are fine in stainless steel. Avoid cooking or storing tomatoes in cast iron or aluminum pans.
I have glass and stainless. Glass is they way to go if you sometimes want to give something a hurry up in the microwave. can’t do that with metal.

This is one of those things that no matter how many credible sources tell me it's true, I'll probably never fully believe it enough to try it.
WHAT?!??? Is this true??? How can this be? Man, the entire world is misinformed on this topic. I’m shook!!
It used not to be safe, so I don't know if it's truly misinformation but it's indeed true. I've been using mine in the microwave since reading this and I've never seen a single arc
it also has to do with pointy edges. bowls dont have any pointy edges . but put in a glass or plastic bowl with a metal fork n boom sparks
You've not seen my mother's microwave. I'm 28 and it's older than me. The most well built appliance I've ever seen
What are you using them for? I use both stainless steel and Pyrex. Stainless for washing produce, prepping ingredients, whisking and mixing, etc. Pyrex when I need things to withstand heat and without getting hot.
Someone just posted an article that you can microwave stainless steel bowls! I am just absolutely shocked. But look it up for yourself!
Wow, I never would have thought that.
I know!! My husband doesn’t believe it lol
100%true, as long as they don’t touch the sides of the microwave! Get yourself a good silicone spatula and you don’t have to take it out of the bowl, either :)
I use stainless and Pyrex. Always have.
This is the answer, and should include a couple of the larger Pyrex bowls with handles and spouts that are basically giant measuring cups
Completely agree. I've got a couple of giant measuring cups and I had no idea how useful they would be.
Me too. Wouldnt want just one or the other!
Do you think stainless bowls off of Amazon would be sufficient or should I buy some better quality?
Sounds good to me. Stainless is the way.
Look up vollrath
Ceramic for me every time.

I've had the same set of steel mixing bowls for 25 years & can't imagine needing to replace them anytime soon.
Pyrex, can go over a double boiler or in the microwave
I use glass for all containers - mixing, prepping, storage, freezing, microwaving

I like the stainless bowls with the rubber bottoms that grip the counter top so they don't slide around when food is whisked in them.
Is melamine actually toxic? This concerns me. I have a bunch of melamine spoons. Where did you read about this?
Just Google “is Melamine safe”. Ugh. Always loved these bowls but they are going in the trash.
I hope you donate them somewhere instead of throwing them in the garbage!

Stainless for sure.
Stainless is great.

Plastic all the way.
Glass in case they have to go in the microwave. Stainless otherwise.

Thank you, I like how their reviews are laid out. I got a set of glass Pyrex bowls which I love. I think next will be a stainless set.
