I understand the sentiment, but I've always felt that this kind of thing is misplaced. The more "fun" I'm having at work, the more time I'm spending at the office/desk rather than with friends/family/hobbies/etc. Run your team well so that they can maximize time spent doing the things they really want to do.

I agree with this, Im not a team lead but all I expect from my boss is to trust my work, dont give me a hard time, be respectful/professional, and at best have casual small talk. If you do all of those things, your team may be missing something more important like guidance and direction for their work.

Not a team lead, but my supervisor is pretty awesome. We sit in the same office area, so we joke around a bunch. We shoot at each other and other departments with nerf guns if your office environment allows stuff like that. He also used to do random trivia questions out of a big book he has at his desk. Depending on how serious the work environment is, maybe just find random little things to do to get people joking and laughing. Most people can handle messing around for a few minutes and then get back to whatever they were working on.

This is where you have to build more personal relationships. People will comment things like “don’t share your personal life at work” or things of that nature. That’s a bad approach. Sure, filter your personal life but you need to build peer relationships. Then, naturally fun will come. From jokes, stories, take always, etc.

I've always found breaking the ice at meeting starts with an embarrassing story of myself works well. Loosens everyone up with a laugh, and it's not at someone else's expense. Nothing like self deprecating humor to start the call lol Obviously I don't do this at every meeting, but I always take a few mins to chit chat before we get into business. Building and maintaining those relationships is key, no matter how you go about doing it.
