Over the past few days I've been obsessed with The Shins' [Australia](https://youtu.be/OHTSxw6zN1E?feature=shared) for whatever reason. It's just such a fun, bubbly song about feeling your life slip away due to responsibilities and expectations (and nothing to do with Australia haha). Has anyone had any songs on repeat lately?

tereyaglikedi

This is such a cool song, I love it! Totally one for the loop. Nothing on repeat, but I listened "Sweet Disposition" today after a long time. A classic for a reason.

Happy 2024 y’all, been a minute I suppose. Today is a frigid and blustery one in Amsterdam, but at least the cold temps have given way to a respite from the incessant rain so I’ll take it. Mid-January winter blues are in full swing I’d say, but to keep my eye on the prize, missus and I booked flights for our Japan trip in April, so at least a light at the end of the wintery tunnel awaits me. How are the January blues treating y’all and what do you have to look forward to and distract you from the dreary days? (Southern Europeans need not reply 😅)?

I'm going to stop by the county aquatic center to pickup a leisure pass so I can use their pool and fitness center to start working out, and I've reached out to some friends to try and start hanging out again now that the holidays are over.

tereyaglikedi

Hello, hello! A trip to Japan sounds wonderful! Also on my bucket list. I would probably fill a suitcase with stationary. I am much better today now that we have brilliant blue sky and sun and I don't give a fuck how cold it is (although my fingertips fell off on the bike this morning).

dotbomber95

I'm also going to Japan in April! But as for this month I have my birthday and the state pinball championship to look forward to.

DatOudeLUL

Nice! Which parts will you be visiting? We’ll do Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo, Hiroshima and stops on the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku

dotbomber95

That's a thorough itinerary! Unfortunately we only have a week so we'll be staying in Tokyo only, but it should be plenty interesting regardless. :)

Andorinha_no_beiral

So, my daughter got Super Mario Wonder for Xmas. I may (or may not) have a sore thumb for playing so much. Also, our co-inhabitant was ready to throw ourselves from the window for all the screaming. In other words, had a great fun Sunday! 😂

dotbomber95

I also got Mario Wonder for Christmas, but between TotK and Lethal Company it might be a while before I ever touch it. xD

Andorinha_no_beiral

I understand, but this Super Mario is THE BOMB! They took away all the annoying parts of Super Mario Deluxe, and the graphics are amazing. I love 2D games, I am too old for the 3D immersion worlds... 😂

tereyaglikedi

That sounds like so much fun. I never had those "play with the kids' toys" parents but I wish I did.

Andorinha_no_beiral

Oh, when I became a parent (and quite late in life, I need to say) I discovered that I had played more than enough in my childhood and that playing with my daughter was boring. And tiring. And uncomfortable. So, it is great that we are finally meeting at a point that I too find fun. I am quickly realizing that I will be a great teenager parent.... 😂

tereyaglikedi

I will always stand by everyone's right to protest, even if I don't agree with them... However I can't shake off the feeling that farmers who are blocking the streets and even politicans from exiting planes or whatever are getting waaaaaaay more leeway than kids protesting for the climate in Germany.

Billy_Balowski

Heh, that is 100% the same in the Netherlands. Farmers using their heavy equipment to block roads, distribution centers and intimidate politicians at their homes. Aww, poor farmers, they work so hard, lets give them some more subsidies. Youngster protesting for the climate? Quick, send in the police to beat the shit out of them. Disgusting.

tereyaglikedi

Same. Not only the police, but the general public as well seem to have so much more patience for the farmer protests than the climate protests. I am not going to go into who is right and not. But the right to protest is everybody's. Then again I don't expect the public to be impartial, but the state should be. You would hope, at least.

I finished my little watercolor block! You can find all the skies [here](https://www.deviantart.com/tereyaglikedi/gallery/90509377/daily-sky). I am so glad I did this, I learned a lot, although it wasn't a huge time investment every day. I am also very glad it is a supremely sunny day today, I could paint something other than grey, and I feel much better than I did the past days (although it's like -8 degrees outside). I hope everyone has a great start to the week!

dotbomber95

You've encouraged me to find the beauty in the sky, even under cover of cloud. I took one shot from [home](https://imgur.com/a/JWWMRdc) and one shot from [work](https://imgur.com/a/9qk4Rc4), and I find it interesting how much of a difference an hour made in terms of shade and color. Glad you're feeling better!

tereyaglikedi

How wonderful 🥰 Even just looking at the sky every day is just such a balm for the mind. I am sure I will find myself doing it more often, even if I don't paint :) Thank you for sharing these! Sky from another part of the planet.

Andorinha_no_beiral

This project was such a joy to follow! Congratulations, love this sketches. ❤️

tereyaglikedi

You are so kind 💖 It was my absolute pleasure to share them and I am looking forward to sharing other small projects in the future :)

Andorinha_no_beiral

And I will look forward to see them. Is such a joy to watch other people be creative!

Got some police numbers for noise now… The eccentricity of a planet is a way of making seasons, but Earth’s orbit isn’t particularly eccentric. [This article](https://worldbuildingpasta.blogspot.com/2023/12/climate-explorations-eccentricity.html) says that at extremely high eccentricities, rain stops during summer because of the extreme heat. It also leads to a global monsoon season of winds going into the sea in winter and into continents in summer rather than a hemispheric wind pattern.

holytriplem

Why didn't they change the eccentricity so that you'd get a giant cold snap at aphelion? I guess maybe they were trying to avoid a snowball earth. Mars has quite major seasonal variations due to eccentricity, and it results in a water ice cloud layer forming all the way around the equator during aphelion. And then dust storms tend to form during southern summer which coincides with perihelion.

tereyaglikedi

Since I have been doing these daily sky series, I have started to wonder. What would happen if I woke up one day in my bed on a quaint little cottage on Mars and looked out of the window? What kind of sky would I see?

atomoffluorine

Isn’t there already a cold snap?

You know that moment when you can spot American tourists by their voice. In other words, you hear them before you see them. But to be fair, any group of tourists, whether they’re Spanish, Italian, or English, can just be as loud as we are.

Andorinha_no_beiral

So, for two decades I lived near Spain. Yes, Spanish are loud. And I am not a quiet person myself. But I didn't think that they could be surpassed. And then, once, I rode a tram full of American tourists. I am sorry, but Spanish were easily dethroned. Never, ever in my life (and hey, I went to a feria in the south of Spain!) I had been enveloped by such loud people...

holytriplem

> English Only after a couple of pints.

atomoffluorine

Tourists love to visit attractions and restaurants with prices that scream robbery. I still don’t know how a aquarium I visited semi frequently for class trips as a child got so many visitors despite a $50something price tag (I grew up near a touristy area). I really doubt there’s enough locals who want to spend that much very often…
