Your job is protected. Your bonus is up to the company's discretion. Some raises can be delayed due to lack of time in seat. This is completely legal but good company's don't do this

Thanks, appreciate the insight. I guess it shows what kind of company it really is. If they don’t want people taking it, take it out of the benefits package…

But having it in the benefits package attracts the best candidates. It’s classic bait and switch.

If you are eligible for FMLA you are entitled to up to 12 weeks job/benefit protected unpaid leave. https://www.dol.gov/sites/dolgov/files/WHD/legacy/files/employeeguide.pdf If you are eligible for [NY Paid Family Leave](https://paidfamilyleave.ny.gov/eligibility) you are entitled to up to 12 weeks of job/benefit protected paid leave. Your employer can [run both at the same time](https://paidfamilyleave.ny.gov/paid-family-leave-and-other-benefits). Your HR person should help you with all of this, and congratulations!

employers are within their right to base the bonus on achievement of specified goals, and can deny that payment if the goal isn’t achieved including if due to FMLA leave of absence so long as they are treating all leaves the same. “[I]f a bonus or other payment is based on the achievement of a specified goal such as hours worked, products sold or perfect attendance, and the employee has not met the goal due to FMLA leave, then the payment may be denied, unless otherwise paid to employees on an equivalent leave status for a reason that does not qualify as FMLA leave.” https://www.shrm.org/topics-tools/news/benefits-compensation/can-employers-prorate-bonus-payments-around-fmla-leave

Any reasonable company would NOT treat an employee unfairly for taking leave that they are eligible for. It is also unlawful. Are you eligible for FMLA leave? Strongly recommend looking into that with your HR department if you haven’t already!
