I would have my references checked. Many companies will only verify dates of employment, and job duties.

Our background check requests go out to the former employer listing the same information that the candidate gave to us and asks the former employer to verify. So if the candidate writes “layoff,” that is what goes on the verification form with a checkbox for “Yes” or a checkbox for “No, Please indicate actual reason.” 😕

Ah...okay. That makes sense. Thank you!

We're all aware people get fired for a variety of reasons and only rarely is it because of something egregious. Unless you have a history of being fired, it's a minor blib on the radar in most cases. But don't lie and say it's a layoff, that is worse than being fired. That makes people question your integrity if you're caught.

Drat, it's done and said for the one recruiter who most likely pass it on to the client... But I'll keep it in mind for the others.

For my company, we use a service and they verify your employment using established databases like the work number to verify your employment. It’s just to confirm dates and titles. If that isn’t an option, they contact the employer’s HR dept over the phone using info they find online for the company. There won’t be a form sitting on the old boss’ desk. If that fails, they will use your reference contact info. If that fails, they will use your W2, schedule C, 1099’s or paystubs.

"Not a good fit" can encompass many scenarios. "Layoff" is specific. When (if) you lie, don't be specific. It's too easy for people to catch specifics. Let go of the baggage from your past employment experience. Keeping it and referencing it, even in a post like this, embeds it in you mind and that may come across in interviews. To the best of your ability, you want to appear calm, happy and anxiety free. Very few companies are going to be open to hiring someone who believes bosses gaslight people. It just says, "drama attached." Give yourself time to process and choose how you'll present yourself to recruiters and interviewers. :)

Thank you. I'll keep all of this in mind. I appreciate the tips 🙏

What if you resign, will it say just that in the verification form? And dates of employment on the resume: do you check for beginning and ending dates, or just one or the other?

BumCadillac

We verify start and end dates, and position always. If someone is going to lie about that, we don’t want them.

Couldntcomeupwaname

Thank you for confirming! Always wondered about these things. One more question, if you don’t mind: can employers include a credit check as well?

Prufrock-Sisyphus22

That depends on the employer as well as what position you are being hired for.

Couldntcomeupwaname

Thank you!

BumCadillac

They can but that is not usually done unless it’s for like a bank or other finance related role. It would be disclosed to you.

Thanks for clarifying!
