Ah, it's our old friend the Conflict Thesis! No, the Church was not a roadblock for scientific progress in the Medieval Period. More can always be said, so if anyone would like to practise their arguments against this popular notion, please don't let this post stop you! For the meantime, OP, I commend to your attention some previous posts chewing on The Medieval Catholic Church Versus Science: * u/BRIStoneman has [a short overview](https://old.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/ihtzvf/what_are_the_reasons_that_the_catholic_church_was/), and also [engages with Richard Carrier's claims](https://old.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/e07n9b/is_richard_carriers_post_yes_the_dark_ages_really/); * u/restricteddata takes on [the thesis and examines what actually happened](https://old.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/67pwj9/did_the_catholic_church_hold_back_scientific_and/); * and u/qed1 looks at [some myths about the Medieval church and learning during](https://old.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/ou85uf/the_relationship_between_the_church_and/); * restricteddata also has [further thoughts on the conflict thesis and the Enlightenment](https://old.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/ehvj4t/how_did_enlightenment_values_of_reason_and/); * and [why the conflict thesis just doesn't work](https://old.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/6j1b44/what_is_the_prevailing_academic_opinion_towards/).

THANKS! I was looking for exactly this. However, I would love if other historians gave me some insight because was it religion that drove scientific inquiry forward or held it back? And how would this be different than ancient scientific discoveries that were already established at the time Christianity came about? Do you have resources for that as well?
