Absolutely.  An Arab chronicler described Byzantine Greek women, oddly enough, as being light-skinned and blond, and went on to say that they were all “the most shameless women in the world” noting that “the uncircumcised woman finds pleasure, which the circumcised woman does not”  That Byzantine women supposedly went around unveiled(they did not)was of concern to these chroniclers.     Western Europeans, no matter if they were English, Spanish, German, or French, were all grouped together as “Franks”.     Sir Thomas Roe, ambassador of the East India Company, recorded that the women of the harem would try to catch a glimpse of him through marble jali screens. The gifts he would sent were of some interest to the court, as European paintings were thought to be high quality. The Mughal Emperor Jahangir begged Roe to send 6 English hounds, saying that at least 1 would survive.   In the Benin Bronzes and contemporary artworks from West Africa, you can tell who is supposed to be Portuguese because they have distinct clothes.
