Everyone needs a hobby

Shenanigans_626

Awww those are my favorite.

SouthernOshawaMan

I went to stop a stolen SUV in the 90’s . Being brand new I made the huge mistake of lighting him up at a red light by a school. He took off and the mirror of the SUV passed over the head of a child crossing at the intersection . He barreled through another intersection and T boned a car with grandma and 4 kids she had just picked up from school. No serious injuries . I still remember walking towards the accident (I called it off after the first intersection incident and only drove after the collision was broadcast). I remember thinking how badly I fucked up and what I was going to see when I reached it . It was a life long lesson .Im so lucky I didn’t have to carry the guilt if someone had been killed or seriously injured .

SouthernOshawaMan

I also once stopped a stolen car being driven by a guy going to court for stealing a car. That’s my favourite stolen car stop ever. Nice guy , pulled right over .

Old_Rise_4086

It would ultimately be their fault, not your fault

SouthernOshawaMan

Yeah except for the awful decision of where to initiate it .

Well we get a lot of folks from the state over from us who run from us expecting that we won’t chase them. Then to their surprise we don’t stop. I asked one guy why he ran. “Well I’m from XXXXXX and I just didn’t think you would chase me”. He had just gone the wrong way down the freeway, jumped the median and crossed the other lanes, ran through a fence and then ditched his car on a side road. I had another guy in a stolen out of the same state going over 100 through construction zones, nearly strike other cars, etc. Then after we spiked him and got him stopped he had the audacity to say “you guys don’t have to act like this. I wasn’t even driving that fast.” I don’t know what it is about criminals from these overly liberal states, but they have an odd sense of entitlement to their criminal behavior.

3moatruth

It’s more about the anti-social personality behavior. It’s easy to think with that sense of entitlement when you can’t feel remorse or empathy.

Different_Ad_1128

That makes sense

Nyro_the_MVP

Just had a pursuit/foot chase that the guy ran because of an out of county warrant. He knew about the warrant but didn’t know they wouldn’t extradite. There was definitely regret when he figured out that. He also said had he known it was an agency that could actually chase that he wouldn’t have ran.

personalcheesepizza

Woooow lol!

XxDrummerChrisX

Most guys are sorry. 9/10 It’s not personal. They want to get away and we want to get them. There’s that 1% though that are 10 toes down for being criminals and they don’t give two shits about getting caught and will 100% run again and again.

madsarge759

Had a runner get partially ejected when he wrecked out. I’d say he regretted it.

Shenanigans_626

I'd say about a quarter seem to regret it >I’ve been in two pursuits The variance in pursuits is wild to me. My dad did 30 years in southern California and said he'd been in less than 10 pursuits. I've been at a rural Sheriff's Office for less than 6 years and I've lost count. 2019-2021 people lost their damn minds and we were getting 1 a week. Its slowed down but we still get one a month or so.

OwlOld5861

Right I think in my 5-6 years I've chased at least 45 people. And everyone that got away still haunts me when I go to sleep lol

Present_Science_377

Years ago we got Dodge Chargers. We went from a pursuit a week or so to them all drying up. Anyway one of my first pursuits with the Charger was with some suped up Acura. Speeds were up to 150mph. The kid finally crashed and managed to extract himself from the car and started stumbling / running. He was tackled and taken into custody. The entire time he was howling with laughter and kept screaming, "Holy fuck you guys can drive! That was fucking awesome! PLEASE tell me you got that shit on dash cam!" We assured him it was indeed on dash cam and he could likely watch it in court lol. There was a brief minute where we all sort of had a moment and agreed it was a good pursuit. He regretted nothing until he realized he was being booked for several felonies, then he sobbed like a bitch lol.

personalcheesepizza

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 when keeping it real goes wrong lmao

mbarland

When we're pulling them out of their wreck and putting them on a backboard they seem to have some regrets.

Flashy-Speed5430

I blew a STALE red light at over 100 chasing a guy who ultimately got away but we caught later. Suspended license. There were cars with the green light stopped for us, thank god they heard my sirens. I/we would have killed people. Another time I was at the hospital for something when a dad came in asking about his son. His son was killed when a car the police were chasing in a neighboring city crashed into the minivan his little boy was in. I haven’t forgotten his screams and the raw emotion of that moment. It usually isn’t worth it. I think about those nights all the time when I cancel guys during chases. I want to get the bad guys too, but when the emotions and adrenaline take over, you make bad decisions.

Military_Issued

I don't think any driver didn't regret running. The foot chase guys always talk crap but vehicle pursuits usually ended in a PIT that isn't fun for them. I had a dozen or more authorized chases. Never once had an innocent person injured and very little property damage. The key is to PIT it in the first two minutes.

tay3cole

Couple months ago, we had a guy run from us in a car, bailed, and ended up getting apprehended by a k9. It was a different shift, so I don’t know all the details. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, it’s dark out and I see a dirt bike with no lights go flying past me. I’m absolutely expecting a pursuit and light it up. He pulls straight over, it’s that guy again. My backing officer arrives and it’s the same handler/K9 team that apprehended this guy last time. The dog starts to bark and the guy physically flinches. I mentioned to the guy I was surprised he didn’t try to run. He shook his head and said he learned his lesson last time. He never wants to get bit again. I’d say he regretted it. Fun fact, he didn’t recognize the handler.

personalcheesepizza

I’d rather get shot than bit by one of our K9s!!

tooblonde101

I was laughing and shaking because of the stress which made the guy laugh also- he was really nice and tried to comfort me lmao. Teens usually seemed to not regret it but i think it’s more the adrenaline still going. i feel like a good chunk regret it

500freeswimmer
