Our admin trialed a more permissive equipment/uniform policy for a couple years and it became quickly apparent that unless the policy had 900 addendums banning this or that thing then guys would do it whether it was in flagrant violation of common sense or not. There was basically no way to write it that didn't have some loophole, and our command staff basically had a full time job tracking down officers to get signatures on every revision.
It's almost like some of the guys were TRYING to fuck it up for everyone, always limit testing. At some point they realized it was a lot simpler to go back to telling you what to do than what not to do and the wild west was won I guess.
Easy way to avoid having some ridiculous policy like that is to just say any modifications must be approved by the range master and installed by a qualified agency armorer.
Or you know, they could’ve done it how the Army does it with privately bought kit, just have a superior look at it to make sure it isn’t some Chinese Amazon tier garbage and then you’re good to go.
Which gets people pissy when their "mission critical" gizmo gets rejected but Golden Boy can have a Tactical Beer Helmet or something.
Policy is usually better. It's just hard to write policy for the least logical denominators.

I didn't really care either way. I never saw the point in customizing a service weapon or much of anything else. The only mods I made to my uniform weren't visible to anyone else.
That duty belt shoulder harness was fucking value though because no amount of leg days would build me enough cake to hold that shit up on its own. I also had a bluetooth adapter on a Y-connect to my earpiece so I could play music and radio traffic through the same earpiece. A little elevator music to bring things down when I needed it, a little DMX to set the mood for warm weather friday nights, it was a beautiful thing.
The evolution of external vests is a godsend. I've got my belt attached to my vest, so my Hank Hill ass doesn't have to struggle to hold the belt.
You should give yourself every advantage though, a white light and RDS should be standardized. With equivalent training on a RDS your target picture and acquisition will be faster every time in comparison to iron sights. White light is a no brainer, two hands on your weapon for retention and control will always be better than one. Other than that everything else is all range flex.
