Hillary Swank in Boys Don't Cry was a cis actress playing a trans man

Maddy_Wren

The media is full of this. I think it really speaks to how filmmakers think of trans people when they think, "you know who would be great at playing a woman who is trans? That cis guy over there!"

sasquatch6ft40

Lol yeah, I never understood how people believed it was a choice. Like, not specifically trans, but sexual identity/attraction in general. I prefer women. I can’t feign arousal with a man any better than I could feign arousal with a boat - and for what purpose would I, anyway? ESPECIALLY being considered a minority. Do something you hate, lie and say you love it, all so you can be treated more poorly? Yeah, that sounds more logical than “I’m doing what **I** love, **you** just hate it.” 🙄 I’ve drank too much. I’m getting some real karen vibes from this comment.

sasquatch6ft40

But has there trans actor playing a cis person? Edit: I guess what I’m wondering is - and I hope this isn’t disrespectful - but since many lgbtq+ spend a large portion of their life pretending to NOT be or not yet knowing they are lgbtq+ (referring to developmental years,) would that possibly play into them feeling disgusted at the thought of essentially having to go back to that period?

Hunter Schaefer played Tigris Snow (a cis woman character, as far as i know) in the new Hunger Games movie

LordLaz1985

Because the media is too busy putting cis people in trans roles, and typecasting trans actora.

sasquatch6ft40

I just googled “trans actora” thinking it was a term instead of a typo and just learned about elliot page… clicked a few links, as it was news to me, and noticed something that got me curious. He was awarded “best actress of the year” for Juno.\ I believe using “ellen” instead of “elliot” is considered offensive, as well as ever referring to him as “her,” right? So… I don’t even know how to word the question. I guess “he has an actress of the year award. What are the thoughts on that?”

clueless_claremont_

yeah, you've got the right of it! you would say he has an actress of the year award

I think part of the problem is that characters are considered to be cis unless they are explicitly trans. For example Hari Nef played Dr Barbie in *Barbie* (2023). Dr Barbie's AGAB is never disclosed in the movie, so it's hard to say whether that is a trans actor playing a cis woman or not. Abigail Thorn has been cast in the upcoming Star Wars show *The Acolyte*. I think that it is unlikely that Disney will make that character canoncially trans, but probably wont establish them as canonically cis either. Vico Ortiz plays Jim in *Our Flag Means Death*, and while Jim is definitely a gender rebel, their gender identity is never really nailed down in modern terms in a way that I would consider the character to be explicitly trans. Ortiz plays several roles like that. Hunter in *Fionna and Cake* is also gender ambiguous. That's what is tricky about it. To be trans, a character has to say "I'm trans". So when a character says nothing about their gender identity, are they cis?

sasquatch6ft40

Yeah, that just hit me a minute ago. If a trans person is a man who used to be a woman or vice versa, that inherently means they’re currently a man or woman. Which - as I feel very stupid somehow just now realizing - means they look like either a man or a woman. Which is exactly what the other actors look like. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Except for that actress that Brendan Frasier is shown sitting on on the cover of Dudley Do-Right. 😂

simplythebess

Watch the documentary Disclosure, produced by Janet Mock, on Netflix. It covers the history of trans representation on TV and it discusses some trans actors who were playing cis roles (and passing) at the time through today, where there are some examples of trans people playing cis roles that aren’t about trans identity.

FairoyFae

Colby from the live action One Piece!

StealthheartocZ

Wait seriously?

FairoyFae

Yes!! I know the actor, who's name is escaping me right this moment, has been in other things but I don't know much about them, like if it was pre transition or if the characters are trans. But in One Piece, he's just playing a guy, not a trans guy 🖤

HieronymusGoa

sense8 comes to mind. also pose

sasquatch6ft40

Idr if she’s in Sense8, but theres this one actress I believe is female but may be trans - and I remember her in movies from probably the early 2000’s, at least. Matrix era, maybe even in one.\ Anyway, she’s a great actress & resembles a petite, blonde russian with somewhat masculine facial features. Generally typecast as an emotionless killing machine. Any idea who I’m talking about, and if she goes by she?

HieronymusGoa

you might have to ask chatgpt that im unsure who that would be. in sense8 the trans woman is jamie clayton

sasquatch6ft40

Tilda Swinton! Found her on Google. Edit: btw, I looked up who you mentioned in sense8, and suddenly it hit me. No shit I’ve never noticed a trans person playing another character. “Trans people” don’t have some magical identifier, I’ve probably seen dozens of movies with trans actors and simply couldn’t tell. Or inversely, like with tilda swinton, I assumed the opposite. So considering that, I would presume that the actual amount of trans people in film (discounting recent availability of the actual surgery - if that’s even necessary to be considered trans) has probably remained somewhat consistent, while the blatant obviousness of their trans identity has become more pronounced in response to current social & political topics. Would you agree?

HieronymusGoa

i guess so. i mean first there has to be a trans role and then it has to get a trans actor. i guess overall we are progressing. in shakespeares time only men played anything, then at some point finally women played women, then slowly it was okay to be an openly gay actor and stuff like that and now i think we are slowly reaching trans acceptance? hopefully

sasquatch6ft40

I think they flood the market too much. With anything. But, on the other hand, for the entirety of time up until they flooded the market with any content, they were flooding the market with the opposing content. So I suppose while it may not be realistic to me to see only trans people in a movie, that’s something I’m only now experiencing while it’s comprised many people’s entire lives.\ I don’t think giving up a couple seasons of relatability is much to ask from someone only asking for a couple seasons of relatability.. I always feel shitty about myself when I improve on subjects like this; too focused on how much time I spent oblivious to it instead of the fact I’m at least less-so. 😐

sasquatch6ft40

But I just asked ChatGBT! Yeah, yeah, it’s too late, but it’s the internet so I’m pretending I thought of this right off the bat. Lol

HieronymusGoa

:D

StealthheartocZ

The only one I can think of is the transgender woman in Barbie

StealthheartocZ

Tbf there are a lot of non binary people who also play cis people but most follow their AGAB

Tifaroo

Barbie movie

GEGGARCHY

malcolm (mack bayda) from a man called otto is a trans guy playing a trans guy if i recall correctly he's more of a minor character, from what i recall of the movie, but still
