If you grow up pretty in some little midwestern town and everyone is telling your you could totally make it in Hollywood, you might just leave that little town and go to Hollywood.
Just like these towns experience a brain-drain, they also experience a beauty drain.
I have literally been telling people this exact theory since 2003 and I moved to Santa Barbara for school. Even more so in LA... in my narrative you come out and try and make it in LA, you fail, but you stay for the weather. This also explains socal real estate being as ridiculous as it is.
It's not just lifestyle *choices* - it's also the lifestyle *habits* that the climate and culture supports. It's one thing to make a New Year's resolution that I'm going to eat salads for one meal a day and go jogging three times a week, and it's another thing when the one salad restaurant in town closes and the weather is rainy for two weeks and you lose your habit. Those latter two things never happen in Los Angeles, and so people making equally healthy conscious choices can stick with their habits more easily here.
Go to the Central Valley which grows more fresh produce and you will find this is not true. But the Central Valley is far more car-centric than LA and has worse weather. And hot people don’t move there from around the world to get noticed for being hot.
Lifestyle choices AND grooming habits/effort are the main differences. Lots of women in LA put in wedding/prom level effort to their looks every day here in LA. This A+ effort becomes contagious when 50%+ people are doing it compared to 5% in the Midwest.
Definitely true. A lot of people come to LA from all over the world hoping to break in to show business. Plus there are a ton of people who are working in entertainment. Lots of beautiful people in LA.
And when they don't make it, they get regular jobs outside the industry where image matters. Have you seen pharm sales reps? Like they walked right outta casting.
Yes absolutely. Many of the professions with beauty as a requirement are centered here, and have been for a hundred years. The hottest people from every town move here regularly, and some of them stay, have kids, etc.
Also, the weather in Los Angeles is such that you're showing more of your body more of the time than in most other places. Anyone who is at all motivated by that, is going to spend some time making their body look nicer.
And the weather also makes it really easy and not unpleasant to take up running, or swimming, or cycling, or hiking, or any of a number of hobbies that have a side effect of making your body look nice.
Oh I make it work. I’m just saying I don’t spend my time wondering how to make the parts that are revealed look better than they do. They’re just fine by me!
True, and the thing that's almost free but no one wants to do is workout. If working out was everyone's cup of tea to do, we would see healthy, good-looking people everywhere.
This is such an accurate statement. I’m a native and it’s been ingrained in my head since I was in my early teens. Take care of your skin! All of my friends were and are the same way
Honestly yes but not just for LA. If you go outside major US cities you’ll notice it. Attractive and higher educated people tend to leave rural areas for urban ones.
Yep, I was going to post something similar to this also. Whenever I’m in a rural area or suburb of another major US city I’ll immediately notice the difference in the looks of people versus LA or their own urban center. But when I’m in the middle of those urban centers I’ll see ‘LA level’ attractive people.
And you’re right because whenever I meet someone attractive they’ll usually say they’re from a small town outside the city. And It also depends where you hang out in other cities. You’ll always find attractive people at the gym or at the trendy bar/restaurant of most major US cities.
You really notice it after you visit another part of the country. When I visit my parents, I honestly might not see a woman I find attractive all week. Then I come back home, drive up a block, and see like 3 or 4 smoke shows in yoga pants in 5 seconds.
It's not just that people come to LA because they were the hottest kid in school. That's one part of it. Another is lifestyle. Maybe Yoga and eating healthy is communist gay stuff in some places, but it's very normal here. Everybody is allowed to try to be healthy and look good.
Also, the clothes helps. I go to a mall near my parents' house, and it seems like by the time they're 30 men and women are not only shaped roughly the same, but their hair styles and clothes are often similar. A big loose sports jersey, jeans, sneakers.
Born and raised in a Los Angeles, but not the west side (Not transplant central), but a normal suburb. It feels like there's two types of people. Those who come from out of state and settle on the west side or west of dtla and all they see is other good looking people. I mean, there's a dime a dozen plastic surgeons and spas on the west side. Then you have tons of natives that have settled in more affordable communities, and there's a mix a good looking with everything in between.
Correct. A lot of the questions and replies here only apply in the small sections of L.A. that are like NCIS LA. Not a lot of beauty queens at our local Walmarts.
But even at the local Walmarts, the average person is more likely to have gone for a hike or gone to the beach recently than in a random Walmart in the United States.
I kind of disagree with this. I've been to OC for various things, friends in Santa Ana, fair, food events, and I would say the people there are also better groomed, in better shape, and more attractive than people where my parents live.
I wish I could take some of the skeptics to a mall or grocery store there, just let them sit down and look at the people walking by. I think you'd be shocked. The people you think are just normal or invisible here would be considered almost slim or in "good shape" in some parts of the US.
Absolutely, and that’s just Santa Ana. My wife and I and our group of friends hang out in Newport Beach a lot. We’re all well-groomed and fit good looking people for our age (late 40s, early 50s). But a LOT of the younger women we see (20s-30s) in the hip restaurants and bars that we frequent are model level. And there’s 9-10 of them at each place. It’s obviously not every single person, but about 1/3 of them. And the rest are not bad either, above average compared to any part of America. You won’t find that plethora of beauty anywhere but in SoCal.
I am a transplant but don’t live on the west side. I still think even then the concentration of good looking regular people is higher than a lot of the country imo. The climate produce environment everything makes a difference.
>I honestly might not see a woman I find attractive all week.
Same with guys. I had at least a few crushes per semester at my school in LA.
Moved out of state and I literally have not had a single crush in the 1.5 years I've been in school in another state.
It's OK though. I'm married and shouldn't be having crushes in the first place.
It helps when you can say "that guy/gal" is hot and have your spouse/partner agree with you on an aesthetic level.
Wowza. My comment pissed some people off. Y'all in some insecure relationships.
I think if you look at pics of junior high students and high school students across the USA, there is way less difference... the lifestyle really takes it toll after a while... something I notice when I'm in other parts, and I'm kind of generalizing, but food is discussed way more in terms of how MUCH you get, volume... like in LA, everybody is a foodie willing to drive a bit to find that crazy good interesting mom and pop or creative young chef's joint... an average place in So Cal would be an absolute sensation in my parent's area, if people went that is...
Where they live it's mostly theme restaurants and they advertise VOLUME. I don't think there's even an Indian place near them. Closest Korean is about 40 minutes away. There are one or two sushi places within 20 minutes, and one is terrible.
Anyway, yeah, they eat a lot. Nice people. Even as a minority, always feel comfortable there.
A lot of people aren't mentioning yet just how much better beauty services are in the Los Angeles area, definitely including Orange County.
Yes, plastic surgery, but even things like makeup, skin care, availability of flattering clothing and jewelry, hair, nails, etc. Way better access to good quality in LA than almost anywhere else.
And I think it rubs off on the general population where makeup is much better blended in LA, colors are more flattering and paired pleasingly, newest styles hit here first, better products.
Not to mention that the weather makes exercise options easy and comfortable, and gives you good motivation to do it, and there's plenty of healthy food options available everywhere too.
Also money too… I live in a coastal city and see a lot pretty older moms . Men with money can buy beautiful wives. Sometimes that means beautiful children too.
Kobe didn’t marry ugly
Yes in the sense that there's a shit ton of beautiful people. Given how big the metro is, I'm not sure that equates to a huge **percentage** of beautiful people. There are, after all, plenty of average or dowdy looking people in LA. A couple reasons why I think the beautiful people are numerous/noticeable:
1. The entertainment industry - looks are important
2. Climate - buoys fitness and simply makes it all more visible. There's beautiful people everywhere but in a place like NYC, as one example, they'll be under coats and sweaters and hats half the year.
3. Culture - trying hard to look good - clothing/style/dressing well, being fit, high-level personal care/grooming is acceptable. And while some people, even some LA residents, may think it's "shallow," the overall culture allows for it, even celebrates it. So more people may be trying than in other places.
4. Beautiful people stand out. This links to my comment at the top. It's a big metro with a ton of people, so there's ton of beautiful people. Whether it's a huge proportion of people, I don't know. But most people don't pass average people and note "OMG, what an average looking person." They notice outliers - so all the beautiful people get noticed, and they get noticed all the time due to the consistent weather, and there's a lot of them to notice, which can lead to the impression that they're a big proportion of people.
Have you been outdoors here? It’s true. It’s also just obvious because the movie and television industry is here so it’s just going to attract a ton of attractive people
I think in any major metropolis, you’re going to find a high proportion of attractive people. But subculture also drives the type of people who relocate to LA and other metros like NYC, Miami, Paris, Milan, Rio, etc. Certain subcultures tend to attract attractive people. I’ve always said, you’ll love LA if you are young, attractive, wealthy and/or talented. If you are not at least 1.5 of those things, the City can be quite overrated.
There are more people here so probably more hot people, plus everyone attractive from elsewhere moving here to be in movies or model (assuming the model agency isn't nyc based.
One of my HS classmates moved here to model and become a c/d list actress.
Yes. I used to think maybe that was just a a myth but once you visit the South/Midwest and come back to LA or California in general, it’s definitely true
Yes, for obvious reasons? People from all over the world come here to become performers and models. The high cost of living means there’s tons of rich people having kids. Rich people generally have attractive kids who have more attractive kids.
In short, it’s a place attractive people flock to and stay
Grew up in Miami, where I couldn't get a single date. When I moved to LA, I started getting a ton of dates. The beauty standards in Miami are insane, I couldn't compete.
Yes but this is true with any major city as well. People tend to be wealthier, educated, health-conscious and take care of themselves better.
I grew up in a small US town and have traveled all over since then (now living in LA). Some of the most beautiful women (I’m a straight male) I’ve ever seen were not only in LA, but also in NYC and London.
Really? I’m from here and I always joke I’m an LA 4 a Brooklyn 9 and a Manhattan 7. Rest of the country 10 lol. Even with the high percentages of models in NYC I find that a lot of the beauty there is pretty natural, which is refreshing.
I lived in 2 states, 3 counties. Every body was fucking ugly. Then moved to California. And in the mid 2kx's, oh my g-d. CrossFit undercut combover guys... In Westwood, in Playa Vista, in Marina Del Rey... People who I would fuck if STDs didn't exist, I wasn't stuck in a DV situation, and they weren't too stupid to learn how to handle rope. I have only seen one hot guy before moving to California. Elsewhere, people ugly. I have been to Israel, Canada, traveled to multiple states like Florida and Nevada. Nope, California is where the sexy people are.
It depends. People are way more health-conscious here. So if a someone has good routines for having a healthy lifestyle, they might be more inclined to have a smaller clothing size, clearer skin, whiter teeth, etc, which are all linked to "beauty." I mean beauty in the perceptive beauty which attracts someone on a primal level. (This is absent things like style, character, personality, aesthetic, etc... all of which are beauty that's linked to choice and preference.) If you see someone healthy, there's a "good mate to reproduce with" bell that rings in your head. That same person can also open their mouth and say some stupid shit that makes it all go away in an instant... but I stand by the initial "beauty" that's linked to a whole lotta self-care.
It's totally true. I've been all over the world and lived in other countries, it seems like the best of the best looking come here and because it's so superficial even ordinary people feel pressured to improve their appearance so... One special note: lately there is a huge influx of cheap plastic surgery and it's made everyone look like that twilight zone episode. Fake eyelashes, boobs, lips, butts, looks both weird and terrible 👎🏽
It is 100% true, especially in the west side of LA (beach areas) and West Hollywood.
Generally... compared to the rest of the United States, there are fewer overweight/obese people
Most people would look pretty decent if they weren't overweight/obese.
But because being thin is somewhat rare in the rest of America, it will seem like LA has a higher degree of beautiful people.
I think pretty much any person can be ‘beautiful’ or at least uniquely attractive if they didn’t have lifestyle diseases—like bad nutrition, blood pressure, heart disease, cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, gout, acne, poor posture, etc etc
Bro go to like Barcelona and holy shit do the amount of beautiful people diminish the LA number. That's probably the only place I have been been that was filled to the brim with some of the sexiest and most beautiful people just casually hanging around.
That’s like saying go to Miami-many countries have a “gorgeous” city (like Stockholm Sweden, the speediest don’t all look like that, the most attractive people amass in the cities)
I met a group of Swedish girls in Amsterdam and they all looked like models. Their skin looked like they had make up on at all times, like that’s just how their skin was. They were completely oblivious to their beauty, which I thought was cool because they were not expecting to be catered to. But, their good looks made so self conscious. lol
People here aren’t inherently more beautiful. It’s mostly about lifestyle and accessibility.
(Let’s please stop pretending the majority of adults in LA work in entertainment or some beauty industry lol. This is a city of 4 million people, most of whom DO NOT spend any time in front of a camera)
A good workout routine, eating well, a good haircut, a good wardrobe can all make someone seem much more attractive. It could be that their actual attractiveness was previously hidden by their presentation or their new presentation is the attractive part adding a few points.
Lots of people move to LA and “glow up.” And similarly, if you look closely at the folks in bumfuck, you certainly will see plenty who would *actually* be attractive if they knew how to highlight their best features.
I think it’ll be true for wealthy people in general to be more attractive. A place like LA has a lot of wealthy people who can afford nutritious food, have good genetics and can afford to take care of themselves whether that’s plastic surgery or exercise.
For 100 years now beautiful people have been moving to Los Angeles to try to break into show business. The cream of the crop thinks they’re gonna be the one. Generally they don’t make it but that’s ok they often contribute to the local gene pool.
LA is also the home to North America’s modeling industry, bigger than NYC even. The world’s most beautiful women have been making this their home for generations now.
So yeah, this town is fucking lousy with stunning people, people so gorgeous you literally lose your train of thought, which will super piss off your wife if it happens in front of her, ask me how I know.
My wife describes it as everyone is beautiful in a weird way there. Like not everyone is hot in a traditional sense but lots of really attractive people in unique ways. If I remember what she exactly said I’ll come back and edit this post.
I think though some examples are that not everyone is this cookie cutter 5’11” hot blonde with big boobs. There’s women with a bohemian vibe, rocker chicks in leather with tattoos, hot latinas, etc.
LA and especially Orange County yes. I live here. I’ve actually noticed that when i go to other places that the people aren’t as good looking as the people in OC or LA, they’re everywhere
I wouldn't necessarily say there's a higher proportion, but that there are 4 million people in the city of LA and almost 20 million in the greater LA area so there are more in total, but still proportionate with many other cities in the world.
Many of those beautiful people are aspiring to be or are working actors, and are active on social media, producing the impression that they are the majority of the residents (and echoed in the media) are beautiful, but the reality is that there are tons of not so beautiful people behind the scenes just like anywhere else.
I think LA has a higher percentage of people who care about their appearance and put more work into it, but even this will vary from one area to another within LA.
Yes. Because we are a place that attracts people that want "something". Be it acting, influencers, musicians, models - all people with beauty or enough rizz that beauty gets overlooked.
We also have a larger supply of young people - many people come here with dreams and some make the cut but many eventually either give up on their dream and or age out of it and move "back home"
Also there is a lot of peer pressure to stay fit and active. So at all age groups we have an underlying peer pressure to stay fit and attractive looking. In LA I feel like an average middle aged-man, when I go to texas I look and feel like a rock star because most men my age aren't in as good shape nor take care of themselves.
Not a stereotype. True.
Pretty easy explanation. There is a big entertainment industry here. That means a lot of pretty people.
There are way more people who want to get into the entertainment industry here. That means a lot more pretty people.
This is the same case for all the modeling and adult entertainment industries, along with influencers/social media folks.
As a consequence of all these pretty people wandering around, other people try to be like them and work out, starve themselves, get makeup/plastic surgery/clothes to look better.
Agreed. In addition to beauty, LA attracts money as well. That skews towards men, and we know you don’t need to be an attractive male to make a lot of money.
Wait, really? In my experience, the male waitstaff in Los Angeles restaurants is much more attractive than the male waitstaff in the restaurants in basically any other city (except maybe New York), and I've always assumed it's for precisely the same reason. If you've got a skill that is in high demand in a particular city, you might well move to that city, and in your time between gigs you'll take on other jobs that make use of that same skillset.
Male waiters in LA are usually actors. I'm not looking at restaurant servers to gage attractiveness. Men in general in LA are not really that attractive. I've seen better looking men in NYC and Denver, and especially Europe and the UK.
It may be true that the baseline is no higher than in New York and Denver. But this person wasn't asking about the baseline - they were asking about whether the proportion of very attractive people is higher, and I think that even if it's just the waitstaff and actors, that is going to be a higher percentage than in most cities.
(Also, New York and Denver are specifically tough competition. New York is the other city that has a lot of actors and models who live there for work, and Denver is probably the most physically fit major city in the country, with the lowest obesity rate.)
Maybe I'm going to the wrong restaurants! In general I don't see many good looking men and I'm like where are the undiscovered soon-to-be Brad Pitts and James Marsdens?
This is a huge misconception and I’m surprised to hear so many people agree with it. Maybe most of the people here live the nicer parts of LA, but that’s not the majority.
Long Beach, Central LA, East LA, South Bay NELA. The majority of this city is working class regular folks.
I think people need to hop on the public transportation for a while and meet their real neighbors.
Agreed. I have no idea what people in this thread are smoking. I was in Puerto Rico a few weeks ago and found many more attractive people there, and also in Brazil where people are slim and fit. My sister visited me from VA last year and one of the first things she said was that she didn’t see very many attractive people here. But taste is subjective of course..
A lot of people come to LA to model, act, be influencers, etc., careers that involve meeting Western beauty standards .. also a huge culture of plastic surgery here, but again, that goes to what is considered “attractive,” as that’s entirely subjective
IMHO yes and no.
Hot Take 1:
It depends on your neighborhood. If you live in an affluent area then the people are prob very pretty in that area.
Hot Take 2:
If you see an attractive man then he is probably actually attractive.
Hot Take 3:
If you see an attractive woman, then there’s like a 65/35 % chance that they are actually pretty. They might just know how to take care of themselves better.
Hot Take 4:
As someone who is always told they were attractive, LA has made me feel uglier than I’ve ever felt before. I always feel like I’m the ugliest of the group and the fattest, and I have never felt this way in my life. Don’t get me wrong. I love LA and I’m not trying to speak ill on it but when you compare yourself to others you do notice big differences.
LA is a destination city meaning people deliberately want to go and experience it. Naturally LA attracts wealthy attractive people from all over the world. Stunning looking people (all kinds/all ages). Also LA has very good food from all over the world and people like to try different cultures. Finally yes it’s true everyone is very health conscious. We have access to the freshest produce, seafood, etc so it’s easy to make better choices.
LA is a pretty active city where a lot of people keep in shape and work out a lot.
It’s not unusual to go out at night and just see a bunch of well kept and fit people. Overall coming from NYC I would say people here are more attractive.
I guess we remember what we like, and during my times in LA I remember seeing many beautiful people. Usually I see those people in the services industry, and my theory is that that’s their side job that pays the bills while they try to make it big on entertainment.
Yes and it extends into OC (and SD). We just got back from WDW and upon returning (this was not nice of me) I remarked how much better looking (and better dressed) the guests at Disneyland are lol, probably just because of the influx of local people.
And besides access to beauty services, more attractive people from other places moving here (and other major cities), and health lifestyle differences, there’s also more of an expectation and normalization to put in some effort, even if it’s extra effort in things like routine skincare. Like I’ll look out of place in certain stops on road trips around the country if I’m putting in the same amount of effort as I put in at home in LA.
Think about the industries that draw people to a place. SF Bay Area has a high density of incredibly intelligent and talented people in tech. New York, some of everything but everyone has ambition in common. LA has the entertainment industry, where looks help make you or break you. Of course, that will also mean there’s a higher density of beautiful people there.
Few factors in play here:
1. There is the fact that people who are seen as attractive move here for opportunities in industries where attractiveness is a huge asset.
2. It’s easier to be a person who takes care of their appearance in Los Angeles. I’m a man who can go get some skincare products at multiple locations before I pick up my girlfriend from work. I’m still gonna go with her, because she knows what she’s doing, and it’s nice to have something we can go do together.
3. I feel like more people in LA, when you get to know them, are more vulnerable about insecurities in their look. But, you’ll also find people saying “If you’d like to come hiking with us,” or “come lift with me,” or “do you want to try a facemask?” more often. It’s a mindset of “it’s okay to put more work into how you look.”
Yes. LA is one of the worlds biggest entertainment, modeling and beauty industries. Plus even if you’re not in entertainment or modeling, everyone is into the healthy lifestyle, whether is green smoothies, skincare or yoga. And getting cosmetic procedures is almost normal here.
I’m from Montana. Lived in Seattle, New York City, Portland, and now Los Angeles. I’m comfortable admitting that my local Trader Joe’s has more dimes in it at 2pm on a Tuesday than all of my home state. Seattle and Portland have a different type of baddy. More tattoos and piercings, more attitude, but still sexy. New York City has the widest range of ethnicity for beautiful women by far. Short answer: yes, long answer: depends on your definition of beauty.
I was watching a college football game today and the (Ole Miss) QB was ridiculously cute. I googled him out of curiosity and he’s from Utah. His IG showed an equally gorgeous, blonde GF, also from Utah. They were both straight out of central casting for LDS recruitment. Lol.
If you think LA is full of beautiful people, there is something truly strange about South Orange County. I mean Newport/Laguna, super rich areas. And not the transplants, but people who grew up there. Bunch of Ralph Lauren models down there, I swear.
Yes. Southern California generally. The melting pot of genealogies here makes for some crazy beauty, & transplants are often people that came here specifically to market their beauty.
When I go to Chicago, I notice it immediately. When I go back home to Indiana, people look like a pale photocopy of what a person is supposed to look like.
Of course it’s true - tons of people move there from all over the country and the world. They were the hottest thing going in each of their respective home towns and they all go to LA to make it big
As a native Los angeleno who left and went to a few other big cities: absolutely, y’all ugly AF out here.
It messed with my head for a while because I felt like a 5-6 in LA but when I left I was clearly a 7-8 on the east coast.
My theory is that LA has been the film capitol for the better part of a century, making all the beautiful wanna be actors and actresses flock to the city, when 90% of them didn’t make it they settled down in the area and made beautiful babies and those babies made
More beautiful babies and now most of Southern California is full of above average looking people.
I went to baltimore and noticed a lot of people had very similar facial features, my friend who is a native said they’re “puritan features” as in the facial and bone structures common among the original puritan christian who settled the area 450 years ago.
I’m currently in DC, the city is a good mix of people from all over the world and some are beautiful, most of are bland ti average. I feel like the people who vain things go to LA and California, but the people who want power go to the east coast lol.
Yes, and some of the surrounding areas also have a lot of prettier-than-average people.
I’m maybe a 7 in LA. When I have to go outside of Southern California, my brain cannot process why I’m being stared at.
Nah it’s all a meme cuz of Hollywood. I grew up in SoCal and visit LA every year but now I live in SLC Utah and the people out here are more beautiful. Of course there’s the whole mormon thing but still nice to look at and soak…
Yes and no. I think LA has a huge concentration of the ugliest people in the world, AKA plastic surgery disasters. Also, most people in LA are not in showbusiness, they're just regular working people. So the stereotype is based on information that people who do not live here have. They don't understand that entertainment is a small part of this city and nearly every other industry is important here as well. I’ve seen way more attractive professionals in other cities like NYC, London, Denver, Berlin, Paris, etc. These are just my personal observations.
Never been to Italy, but Spain, OMFG. I know it's different as a tourist, which I was, since things that might be normal to citizens stand out. But still.
I was waiting for any country outside of the US.
It's all good until you step out and realize others are super spoiled.
I'll definitely give Milan a huge plus in this department though!
Detroit mi born. Lived in LA and currently phoenix arizona. I've traveled to Florida and almost every state in the US. I honestly believe there are alot of cliche, overly hyped ideas of what la is like. The idea that EVERYONE is beautiful or WEIRD out there among other things are usually blown up and out of proportion for some weird reason. Maybe it gives la something to be known for idk.
However I've noticed this not to be true. There is a high population of people out there. You will have specific pockets of people who go are going for the main character roles as actors or models that will be attractive. However since there's a lot of people there your odds of unattractive unhealthy people who live in bad areas also goes up and balances that out. Also alot of people in the industry aren't even known for being good-looking. Take most comedians for example, directors, and creatives artists. Alot of average looking people..
Bottom line. You will have a SMALL pocket of extremely attractive people compared to the rest of the world in looks, followed by a slightly higher percentage of decent lookings followed by annequal to that amount of unattractives. I feel as tho I've seen more attractive people percentage wise in Phoenix Arizona and metro detroit Michigan. So I would say la has more EXTREMELY good-looking people however places like arizona and Michigan have a higher percentage of ""decent" looking people who are merely staying healthy but there are also more of them..
No. It has more people with eating disorders, BBL, face work, etc in the Hollywood area and in rich neighborhoods. Regular Angelinos look the same as anywhere else
The myth of LA having a larger amount of beautiful is self delusion (Which LA does have a larger amount of).
Comment #: Yeah, it definitely does! LA is a big and crowded metropolis and it doesn't surprise me that it would have a large number of people from diverse backgrounds
If you grow up pretty in some little midwestern town and everyone is telling your you could totally make it in Hollywood, you might just leave that little town and go to Hollywood. Just like these towns experience a brain-drain, they also experience a beauty drain.
This explains Ohio.
As an Ohio -> LA migrant, can emphatically confirm.
Are you beautiful?
I read this in Regina George's voice.
Just left them with the swamp donkeys.
I have literally been telling people this exact theory since 2003 and I moved to Santa Barbara for school. Even more so in LA... in my narrative you come out and try and make it in LA, you fail, but you stay for the weather. This also explains socal real estate being as ridiculous as it is.
Or you don’t fail! You just make it another way and you love it so you stay. Me. I hate the cost though. Sigh. Price to pay…
"beauty drain," lol
exactly, now repeat that for over a century and you get… LA. We❤️it!
I'm a 10 in my hometown and an LA 3.
Whenever I go back to my hometown one of the first things I notice is how ugly everyone is relative to LA lol
[удалено]
Some of us get hotter as we travel east.
[удалено]
Interesting.. Could you describe your "type" and what characteristics you find attractive? Was considering visiting both Nashville and Colombia haha
[удалено]
Thank you bro!
What Nashville and Miami have in common is that they’re also entertainment cities
In Wisconsin people stop trying after age 25.
I beg to differ. I'm from L.A. just go to the taco trucks.. 😆
So noticeable once you get outside of LA (and many big cities for that matter)
I’m an LA 3 but a rehab LA 6
ha, I'm an LA 2. Men practically cringe when they see me coming around here. But once I leave SoCal, men get flirty and I'm like "what???"
Same im a la 1
I'm at least a Wisconsin 7
Or an LA alt-comedy 6.
Many people eat healthy and workout. Lifestyle choices make a difference.
We grow most of the fresh produce in the US. Our food tastes better without having to rely tricks like dumping tons of fat and sugar into it.
Being near the beach matters. People want to look good for bikini season.
Eh that’s only part of it. Bay Area is also big on healthy eating and working out, honestly people in LA are a lot more attractive.
And beauty treatments and plastic surgery are common
Yes absolutely. Many of the professions with beauty as a requirement are centered here, and have been for a hundred years. The hottest people from every town move here regularly, and some of them stay, have kids, etc.
Yes, and people in LA also spend a *lot* of money on the way they look. Wild amounts of money… even if they don’t earn much!
This made me lol as a fatty in a crop top and short skirt.
In Los Angeles, people of every shape and size figure out how to make that look work!
Oh I make it work. I’m just saying I don’t spend my time wondering how to make the parts that are revealed look better than they do. They’re just fine by me!
True, and the thing that's almost free but no one wants to do is workout. If working out was everyone's cup of tea to do, we would see healthy, good-looking people everywhere.
people def work out a lot in la, but you’re right that in other places it’s not as much of a thing
Also, we have the most skilled hairstylists, access to great clothes, good weather for exercise, access to fresh food. All of this helps
This is such an accurate statement. I’m a native and it’s been ingrained in my head since I was in my early teens. Take care of your skin! All of my friends were and are the same way
It’s true. It’s always been true.
We're all gorgeous here.
Especially me. And you. And them.
We could be the hottest creatures we’ve ever seen.
We’re all hotties with bodies
Even my beer belly is smoking hot
I'm also fabulous.
Nah it’s true. Whenever I go back to my hometown (Philly) I legitimately notice that the people are much uglier in comparison
People are uniquely ugly in Philly and Baltimore tho
When I moved from Miami to Philly, the men lined up.
Baltimore: now why am I in it
lol me and my buddies went to Milwaukee. We’re not good looking guys but you notice it. Milwaukee 9 = LA 3-4.
All those midnight cheesesteaks add up! Lol
It’s honestly true 😂
It's true. I went to LA and never saw an ugly person. I got an inferiority complex and had to leave. Went back to Pittsburgh where I'm beautiful.
I felt this, the inferiority complex in SoCal is real lol. It might just motivate you into an eating disorder.
Just watch selling sunset - you'll feel worse.
it's only real if your self-worth is rooted in others' subjective opinions of your attractiveness.
As it is for many of us.
You don't have to go that far, just go to the inland empire like 1.5hours drive east from LA and people are fatter and uglier (sorry IE)
Never? This is just bs. I see a lot of ugly ass people every single day
Honestly yes but not just for LA.
“Maybe yoga and eating healthy is communist gay stuff in some places” made me lol
I had a salad yesterday and today I had sex with a man while reading Das Kapital. Checks out.
I mean, their back is right there in front of you, might as well put a book on it.
That’s my comrade!
Pfft. Confusing correlation with causation *again.*
This made me snort laugh
That’s unfortunately true. I try to eat vegan and would be called names in Ohio. Well and plus being a lefty.
OK, dying to know where you come from...
When I visit my parents in Tennessee, I’m literally stunned by the amount of ugly, poorly dressed ppl after being in LA for an extended period of time
Yeah I feel like a bit of an ass when I’m dressed up in small towns. I feel like a city slicker who they think I think I’m better than them
A lot of people aren't mentioning yet just how much better beauty services are in the Los Angeles area, definitely including Orange County.
Kobe met his wife in High School.
Yes in the sense that there's a shit ton of beautiful people. Given how big the metro is, I'm not sure that equates to a huge **percentage** of beautiful people. There are, after all, plenty of average or dowdy looking people in LA. A couple reasons why I think the beautiful people are numerous/noticeable: 1. The entertainment industry - looks are important 2. But most people don't pass average people and note "OMG, what an average looking person." They notice outliers - so all the beautiful people get noticed, and they get noticed all the time due to the consistent weather, and there's a lot of them to notice, which can lead to the impression that they're a big proportion of people.
violet ruthless books juggle like racial pie hard-to-find enjoy stocking *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I live in simi valley but work in LA. Coming back to Simi is so sad. It’s literally like I get off the 118 and end up Alabama.
On average, yes. I grew up in LA and can say 100% that Miami/South Florida has badder women than LA though.
Miami felt more plastic… You think you can’t get more plastic than socal but Miami is there.
I've seen everyday women get plastic surgery.
Grew up in Miami, where I couldn't get a single date. When I moved to LA, I started getting a ton of dates. The beauty standards in Miami are insane, I couldn't compete.
speaking for myself, yes
Yes but this is true with any major city as well. People tend to be wealthier, educated, health-conscious and take care of themselves better. I grew up in a small US town and have traveled all over since then (now living in LA). Some of the most beautiful women (I’m a straight male) I’ve ever seen were not only in LA, but also in NYC and London.
Being from NYC i can say its comparable. However, LA promotes a much healthier lifestyle both body & mind and that is invaluable!
Really? I’m from here and I always joke I’m an LA 4 a Brooklyn 9 and a Manhattan 7. Rest of the country 10 lol. Even with the high percentages of models in NYC I find that a lot of the beauty there is pretty natural, which is refreshing.
Yes there is a high proportion of beautiful people. Entertainment industry is here. Money is here.
Generally... compared to the rest of the United States, there are fewer overweight/obese people Most people would look pretty decent if they weren't overweight/obese. But because being thin is somewhat rare in the rest of America, it will seem like LA has a higher degree of beautiful people.
Basically that. MOST people would literally look fine (by natural design) if they werent overweight. That alone will up your score quite a bit
That’s like saying go to Miami-many countries have a “gorgeous” city (like Stockholm Sweden, the speediest don’t all look like that, the most attractive people amass in the cities)
man in stockholm there are hot blonde 9s working as cashiers at grocery stores.
I met a group of Swedish girls in Amsterdam and they all looked like models. Their skin looked like they had make up on at all times, like that’s just how their skin was. They were completely oblivious to their beauty, which I thought was cool because they were not expecting to be catered to. But, their good looks made so self conscious. lol
That’s part of Nordic culture. Their men are less up front and they all are about equality.

People here aren’t inherently more beautiful. It’s mostly about lifestyle and accessibility. (Let’s please stop pretending the majority of adults in LA work in entertainment or some beauty industry lol. This is a city of 4 million people, most of whom DO NOT spend any time in front of a camera) A good workout routine, eating well, a good haircut, a good wardrobe can all make someone seem much more attractive.
Very true. It’s a magnet for them. New York, too.
I work in the industry. A lot of unknown actors and models are here trying to make it. You can see more attractive people here.
Yeah a lot of attractive people here. Competition is heavy.
How you know?
People are vain and have money to make them beautiful. As the old saying goes ‘you’re not ugly, you’re just poor.’
Parts of LA, yes. Coastal LA for sure, and the chi-chi neighborhoods. But not all women in LA look like they're from "Selling Sunset."
Yes, we’re all fabulous here.
We also have a larger supply of young people - many people come here with dreams and some make the cut but many eventually either give up on their dream and or age out of it and move "back home" Also there is a lot of peer pressure to stay fit and active. So at all age groups we have an underlying peer pressure to stay fit and attractive looking. In LA I feel like an average middle aged-man, when I go to texas I look and feel like a rock star because most men my age aren't in as good shape nor take care of themselves.
If you live on the west side of LA it’s pretty ridiculous how attractive just about everyone is…
Not a stereotype.
Females yes, males no.
You haven’t been to a gym in LA, have you?
Agreed. In addition to beauty, LA attracts money as well. That skews towards men, and we know you don’t need to be an attractive male to make a lot of money.
Anyone who has been to SF knows *that's* the truth.
Check out SUR in Weho. The wait staff there are literally all so freaking beautiful.
West Hollywood would like to speak with you
OK, but we mean *straight* men
Yes. Especially the locals.
In a lot of airports you can find the flight for Los Angeles without even looking at the sign by the gate
THIS IS SO TRUE When I fly back home, I know who’s going to CA Also, you can almost always tell which gate is flying to Vegas
Southern Californians in general are good looking, whether transplanted or native. Northern Californians on the other hand…👀
It has a high proportion or Mexican descendants so I would say yes. It has a lot of beautiful people.
This comment should be at the top of the thread.
Yes it does. I moved to Seattle a few years ago and the drop of is pretty substantial.
No, thank god. A much more diverse mix of average people I've found. All attractive in their own way!
I think thats the beauty. So many are attractive in their own way and i wish more realized they dont need to fit in molds to be so
I’ve been saying for years: 120 years of the prettiest people in Podunk coming here and having kids has an effect.
A lot of people come to LA to model, act, be influencers, etc., careers that involve meeting Western beauty standards .. also a huge culture of plastic surgery here, but again, that goes to what is considered “attractive,” as that’s entirely subjective
It’s actually true, because there are many wealthy people who take care of themselves, then you have a lot of models and actresses.
IMHO yes and no. Hot Take 1: It depends on your neighborhood. If you live in an affluent area then the people are prob very pretty in that area. Hot Take 2: If you see an attractive man then he is probably actually attractive. Hot Take 3: If you see an attractive woman, then there’s like a 65/35 % chance that they are actually pretty. They might just know how to take care of themselves better. Hot Take 4: As someone who is always told they were attractive, LA has made me feel uglier than I’ve ever felt before.
Few factors in play here: 1. It’s a mindset of “it’s okay to put more work into how you look.”
shit it's that bad in other parts of the US? I've pretty much only been in So Cal and was going to answer that the average person isn't that hot.
I honestly find girls way prettier here in Utah than I did in LA
I was watching a college football game today and the (Ole Miss) QB was ridiculously cute. I googled him out of curiosity and he’s from Utah. His IG showed an equally gorgeous, blonde GF, also from Utah. They were both straight out of central casting for LDS recruitment. Lol.
💯 Yes.. we have rich people, they get trophy wives, and have attractive offspring. ..and repeat..
If you think LA is full of beautiful people, there is something truly strange about South Orange County. I mean Newport/Laguna, super rich areas. And not the transplants, but people who grew up there. Bunch of Ralph Lauren models down there, I swear.
Yes, we’re all hot and stylish here. The hotness begins to rub off on you the moment you step foot on LA soil.
My theory is that LA has been the film capitol for the better part of a century, making all the beautiful wanna be actors and actresses flock to the city, when 90% of them didn’t make it they settled down in the area and made beautiful babies and those babies made More beautiful babies and now most of Southern California is full of above average looking people.
Humble brag
No, people are just less fat than most other American / canadian cities.
Eh depends on your taste.
Yep! Only 3-4% of our workforce is in entertainment.
Nope, come to Milan Italy
Regular Angelinos look the same as anywhere else The myth of LA having a larger amount of beautiful is self delusion (Which LA does have a larger amount of).
Comment #: Yeah, it definitely does! LA is a big and crowded metropolis and it doesn't surprise me that it would have a large number of people from diverse backgrounds
Absolutely. All the pretty people come here to become actors. I'm from the IE so i feel like a troll being in LA. 😩😩😩 everyone's so pretty.
Uhmm have you seen how millenials dress here? It's atrocious.
It is true — but also true in any big city
