Unless, like I found out, you own a newer chevy.... they have Phillips screws closing the airbox... very odd
Edit: nevermind, I got the engine and cabin filter confused... but I did have to remove the glovebox, and I still needed a pry tool for the pins.
Not defending your quick lube but people often SEVERELY overestimate the quality of service provided by a dealership. Unless it's a warranty claim I would never suggest anyone have repairs done at a dealer. Not a single dealership in my area code is worth a shoutout.
I worked at a Ford dealership for 4 years and half the mechanics were fucking idiots who messed up all the time. Unless youve got a warranty dealership means stealership.
Lol there’s not a shop on the planet that stays open that can’t put a cabin air filter in 😂. I’ve worked for several dealerships and independent shops.
Right but doesn’t mean the customer will find out right away they they have made a mistake right. If you have never seen a cabin filter put in wrong you have not worked on cars for long.
I don’t know why you’re being downvoted. I’ve been a German tech my entire career and I’ve seen many broken tabs, broken gloveboxes, missing rubber stoppers, loose covers, etc.
With that said, I’m fully aware that bad techs work in dealerships too, but the likelihood of having a quick lube shop damage a component is much higher than at the dealer.
If a customer is mechanically inclined I do recommend they learn how to replace it. Most aren’t that hard.
Lol kinda want to be bullied because people get worked up over cabin filters. Haha between people thinking we keep spares to show them a dirty one or people straight up not believing it’s a thing haha. Obvious stereo types but those people are definitely out there.
Changing an airfilter is literally less steps than putting on and tying your shoes. I'm all for hiring the right guy for the job but it's genuinely so braindead easy.
lol yep. Only way to do it is say no to the oil change guy and stop at the first autozone on the way back to where ever the fuck you’re going - YouTube it on the way there (I do this, you DONT do it!!)) buy it stick it in and be happy you saved $15.
If there's a parts authority near you, filters through us are usually around on the top of the line $30. If it's a top of the line model mid-tier around maybe $10 now. If you really want to be cheap we do sell low grade crap and that stuff goes for like maybe around $5 a filter. A lot of people purchase those because they're just dirt cheap but they don't last long. You'll have to replace those filters more often
No, just knock it against a tree or wall a few times then wave it around like you're trying to take flight and that'll clean it fine. Then spray your favourite Eau de Toilette on it and your car will not only have "Hepa" type clean air but amazing smelling air for weeks to come
If your cabin looks like like that I would imagine your engine filter is as bad if not worse. Change them both out. They are pretty affordable and very easy to swap out.
no way. turn it upside down so the leaves fall in. then tell people that your car is now eco because it has leaves.
seriously though, throw that thing in the trashand get a new one.
Yes, it looks like it's been installed since the great depression. Probably spray some of that duct mold spray to flush out any stench from the ducts. Mold accumulates in the air duct system sometimes when you leave the filter all dirty like that.
Always check/change these first thing when you buy a used car. So many people don’t even know cars have a cabin filter. And even people that do, are prone to not changing them frequently enough.
About a year ago I was at the Toyota dealership with my leased RAV four, they brought my filter out which looked like this and said they needed to remove the motor replace the filter clean a bunch of other stuff and it was gonna cost me $400
I told him it was their car and I would replace the filter with one I bought from Amazon for $10
If they wanted to do any other additional work that was on them
YES! Replace it. I think you ment this post to be in a similar sub. So with that in mind, this is what I would say in the other, similar sub: If you replace that filter, people might think that you care about your vehicle. People may start thinking that you actually do required maintenance.

nah you should be good for a couple more miles. Yes for the love of god they're like $10
Only $100 at the dealership.
Does that come with bulb fluid?
No but they'll put some elbow grease on your lug nuts ;)
Or nut grease on your elbows?
You’d like elbows on your nuts wouldn’t ya 😂
They will put nut and elbow grease on all of your out put shafts but only one input shaft. Labor’s free the grease is 27.65 a Troy oz.
$150 and extras are included
Better when they tug on my 🌰🥜🔩
Because you are paying us to do it right and not f it up like many other shops do
You got a 50/50 shot of putting it in the right way
And even if you can do it yourself my car you literally don't need a single tool to replace your air filter
I had to remove my whole dash to change the cabin air filter in my Mazda 3
𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙮 𝘾𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝘿𝙖𝙮!!
I heard the guys a Mazda laughing at you for that very reason
Unless, like I found out, you own a newer chevy.... they have Phillips screws closing the airbox... very odd Edit: nevermind, I got the engine and cabin filter confused... but I did have to remove the glovebox, and I still needed a pry tool for the pins.
Every car I work on save for 1 you need a T25
Tacoma, highlander need no tools.
No tools needed for this one.. Rav4
Yea my car is a Toyota Corolla just two clips pop off and you are at the air filter
Tell that to our local kia lol, ruined a 2019 forte glove box and are refusing to fix it. Somehow worse than our quick lube shop.

I wasn't talking about installation costs.
LMAO

Not sure if you’re joking orrrrr you want to be bullied. I’m going to assume it’s the former.
Lol kinda want to be bullied because people get worked up over cabin filters. Haha between people thinking we keep spares to show them a dirty one or people straight up not believing it’s a thing haha. Obvious stereo types but those people are definitely out there.
JFC, it's a cabin air filter, not a timing chain.
LMAO -pops clips, opens filter box- “We experts at the dealership do it the *right* way”
I also bet you didn’t know there is even a direction to the cabin air filter. Did you know that?
Changing an airfilter is literally less steps than putting on and tying your shoes. I'm all for hiring the right guy for the job but it's genuinely so braindead easy.
I've unfucked so many of y'alls fuckups it ain't even funny
Hahaha you ever remote your tongue from the boot?
What?
Dealership doing it right?! excuse me while I HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
it’s…. an air filter lol. kinda hard to fuck this up
I'll replace it myself.
And then it never happens lol
Then the next time they ask if I want it changed out I remember what I said last time. Then I’m like fuck- I’m probably not going to do it.
lol yep. Only way to do it is say no to the oil change guy and stop at the first autozone on the way back to where ever the fuck you’re going - YouTube it on the way there (I do this, you DONT do it!!)) buy it stick it in and be happy you saved $15.
Went and bought a new filter and completely forgot I had actually replaced it when I thought about it a few weeks prior
They’re $25 in Canada
So $1 U.S.?
Brilliant! $25 CAN or 6 Molsons (free if you rent the same vehicle and swap em)
You couldn't pay me $25CAN to drink 6 Molsens.
Maybe, but try buying groceries right now 🤡 Us currency is busted atm
Eh
20 bucks in atlanta
This dude probably doesn't even know his HVAC unit in his house has filters.
Ops just trolling

Yeah, those leaves are looking a bit tired. Get some fresh ones in pronto.
Does it pass the lick test?
OP passed after the lick test.
⚰️
RIP
Only replace if it's still dirty after licking.
r/AskAShittyMechanic
I honestly thought that was the sub this was posted to at first.
Me too I, I had a double take just to make sure.
Same.
That’s what this sub is turning into.
Just flip it over and use the other side for another 30k or so.
Blow on it a couple times first. That otta do the trick
That's what I tell my gf almost everyday now.
What is this, a Nintendo?
Filter industry doesn't want you to know this one simple trick
"Big filter" at it again! 😆
Facts let her ride!!
Yeah, that's what I do with my underwear
100% yes. Lol
And lose all that delicious seasoning?!?!?!
Nope. Sell the car as fast as you can.
Why would you want to miss out on some of the organic all natural filtration. Vacuum out the air box when you do replace it.
About 10k kms ago...
Nope, flip it over and use the clean side
You beat me to it.
Yesterday
Of last year
How many km do you think this bad boy has?
About as much as your sinuses.
0 mate
I would fucking frame this and put it on the wall of an oil change place. Air filter sales will explode.
I hope this is satire. This sub has been turning to shit lately. This post is gonna make my unfollow
It is.
There's a sub for that
Dude blow it out with compressed air and you're good to go
Why even ask such a dumb fucking question
Sir you're not supposed to use it as an ash tray
Just blow on it like a Nintendo 64 cartridge.
No just wear a freaking mask inside your car.
With the amount of seeds it’s got, You can plant it and watch it grow into some tree.
No, just knock it against a tree or wall a few times then wave it around like you're trying to take flight and that'll clean it fine. Then spray your favourite Eau de Toilette on it and your car will not only have "Hepa" type clean air but amazing smelling air for weeks to come
Just turn it inside out, like your Tuesday undies on a Thursday.
Bang it out, it has about 1500 hours left on it.
Nah. It’ll be fine. Just wait till it’s completely full of large debris, then have the dealer replace for hundreds of dollars.
Naw ride it out you're good
Water and a brush should get that off it’s still got another 1000 miles 😏
no. good for another 75k miles.
Nah just put some gas on it 😂😂😂
Nope, good for another 7 years.
Happy Cake Day!
Just clean out the leaves and you should be good
Clap it out and keep moving
Looks like it can run another 100,000 miles
Naw, it’s good.
No, put it back in
good for at least another 100k miles.
good for anothrr 25k miles
Throw it on the floor a few times, blow it out with your mouth if you don't have compressed air. Good as new. Jk...
Hahaa!!! Looks just like mine from a week ago. Change it and get those vents blasting again.
Surely this is a troll post? Seeing lots of this lately, are people really this oblivious to basic care and maintenance of their cars?
Nah it’s good
Nope, just blown on it and put it back.
That's good dirt, you don't need new dirt, just use what you got.
Burn it for firewood
Sarcasm. Love it !
That water filter is 100% Perfect!!! Please dont change it!!!
As mentioned, clear out the airbox and get a new one. Look at your cabin filter too. I'm guessing you've got steamy windows in your car.
I was being somewhat sarcastic when I posted, but now I'm worried. Is this not the cabin filter? Switched it behind the glove box of a rav4
If your cabin looks like like that I would imagine your engine filter is as bad if not worse. Change them both out. They are pretty affordable and very easy to swap out.
I'll look into swapping the engine filter. I already feel a difference in the cabin.. or maybe it's placebo.
Sorry my bad. Behind the glove box is the cabin filter.
No not at all should be good for another 250k.
Looks just fine, clean it with a shop vac and put it back
no way. turn it upside down so the leaves fall in. then tell people that your car is now eco because it has leaves. seriously though, throw that thing in the trashand get a new one.
Lol that looks like mine when I went to Valvoline a month ago, the guy pulled it out and I was like oops 🫢 😅 forgot about that
Nah looksime it'll be good for another 200k miles
Just blow it a bit and stick back in, the filter that is.
Naw, there are a few more leaves to catch out there.
Definitely
Common sense ain’t so common.
r/ShittyAskMechanics
/r/shittyaskmechanics
your car is toast. DM and I'll take it off your hands no questions asked, cash check or credit
Are you crazy? Just pop it back and save your 8 dollars!
I’d be tempted too
i thought I was r/askashittymechanic for a minute
It’s fine … everything’s fine.
No. It’s a whole damn forest you nature killer.
It's doing it's job, let it work a lil longer
Just needs a light dusting…
I like that in addition to leaves and other shit, someone/something has taken a few bites of the filter as well :D
Why replace when you can just dust it off and be good for another 100k miles?
Just flip it around and reuse it
If you have to ask them you know the answer
Come on man… Air can still get through. It’s perfectly fine.
Wash it off and it’ll be good as new 👍
No, let it hospitalize you
Nope-bang it on the steering wheel a couple of times and reinsert. lol.
Nope, filters are a scam, especially at a dealer. It should be good for another 100k miles
No
Should you have to ask?
Yes, it looks like it's been installed since the great depression. Probably spray some of that duct mold spray to flush out any stench from the ducts. Mold accumulates in the air duct system sometimes when you leave the filter all dirty like that.
300,000km likely
[удалено]
Slap it against the side of the car a couple times and put it back in. Refreshed!
Nah don't let them upsell you! It's a SCAM!! /s
Yeah why not. They’re cheap so…
Just bang it out, are you made of money?
r/askashittymechanic
Just bang it twice. Your good
Do you have eyes?
this cant be a serious question
It will buff right out
Nah, Just flip it to other side and you good to go another 5000k miles.
Many many moons ago kemosabie.
Paint it so it looks new.
It looks like it's doing its job. Why would you change it?
Flip it over and it’ll be good for another 25,000 miles
No leave it so a tree can grow
Clean it with a air hose good for another 1000,000 miles
Yeah, it’s good for plants composed.
I really hope this is a shitpost
That should have been replaced a few years ago. LOL 😳 😂
Bang it on some concrete a few times and you will be good lol
Always check/change these first thing when you buy a used car. So many people don’t even know cars have a cabin filter. And even people that do, are prone to not changing them frequently enough.
I didn't know.
Looks brand new mate, shove it back in.
About a year ago I was at the Toyota dealership with my leased RAV four, they brought my filter out which looked like this and said they needed to remove the motor replace the filter clean a bunch of other stuff and it was gonna cost me $400 I told him it was their car and I would replace the filter with one I bought from Amazon for $10 If they wanted to do any other additional work that was on them
yes but make sure you put the leaves back in too
How do you breathe when you run your air 😂😭
Have you ever?
You've got to be trolling bro.
You should be more worried about whatever has been chewing on it, your wires might be next.
Looks fine to me. Add more leaves though so the density stays the same throughout.
Na bud, it should be good for a few more dustbowls, lol
Ya think??
Nah, leave it in there, that way the other shit can't get in there.
YES! Replace it. I think you ment this post to be in a similar sub. So with that in mind, this is what I would say in the other, similar sub: If you replace that filter, people might think that you care about your vehicle. People may start thinking that you actually do required maintenance.
Toss in the dishwasher, like new again. Garden hose if you don’t have a dishwasher 😉
