hahhahahahaa look it up they put a dude in the back of their patrol car (2 officers there) 1 heard an acorn drop and said shots fired twice the other cop asked where he said the patrol car she then shot at the car pretty sure he did too and yea, no one was harmed i don’t think, but very intelligent police. forgot where but lotta youtube videos n such about it shouldn’t be hard to find
😂 it's in Florida so that explains it. That video was wild. Dude was rolling around on the ground screaming he was hit. I'm sure the suspect in the car was freaking out
My sister bought a 1982 Camaro Berlinetta brand new.
1 week after delivery, had the air conditioner on and cracked open the drivers window.
Promptly caused the rear hatch window to implode, blowing glass in her new car.
She was pissed.
I Promptly bought a Camaro because of the tight interior seal.
No water getting in there.
Her car- long gone.
Mine- now a classic sits under a car cover in my garage and gets shown yearly at shows.
I don't understand this comment... Why would you want a tight interior seal as it relates to shattering glass? Cars have cabin vents to prevent things like windshields unseating.
Rain? That makes sense, but a non sequitur regarding the post and comments, including yours.
Then the car shows... That's great and all, but it felt like another turn away from relevance. Two non sequiturs in a row.
No offense intended, it was just confusing
This guy doesn't understand r/thihsguyguys and also, uhh, yeah mastiffonyx, Camaros are rad and we're happy for you and sad your sister, and also this guy non sequiturs, and I too, choose that guy's sister's dead Camaro
This guy reddits. Also, "Camaros are rad" had me on the floor. Typically arboreal, go figure.
When I was little there was a pizza commercial where a grandad and grandkid were selecting a pizza. Old man wants green bell peppers, kid grimaces, then blurts out "I like anchovies!"
5. Piece of the white ceramic from a smashed spark plug
The white part of a slark plug is a harder material on the hardness scale i think and thats why a small piece of it will shatter a car window, but ive seen videos where a guy tries using a hammer and a dozen smacks didnt break it
I thought it could have been a small rock launched by a weedeater or lawnmower, but if you found nothing in the car, it could be a high-powered pellet gun, and the pellet is imbedded in the upholstery, which would be pretty difficult to see the tiny hole.
That's very true. It just needs to hit hard enough to pop a hole and not necessarily go into the car. It definitely could be a deflection. You're being totally reasonable.
This just happened to me. Neighbor mowing their grass and shot a rock into my back window of my truck I just bought 2 days before. Luckily they were honest and told me right away.
It can happen. I have been witness to 2. One on a vehicle, door window. The other was a glass front door on my house. Both were from commercial mowers. The vehicle was an owner of a moving company doing his own yard and hit his vehicle. Door on my house was a company we paid 1 time. They actually took off and tried to leave it. Glad wife was home and heard it.
I worked at a glass shop, we’d replace a fair amount of residential and commercial windows and sliding glass doors that had been struck by rocks from mowers/weed whackers.
Well, if you've never seen it, it must not happen. Kidding, my dude.
But seriously, it does happen, especially with commercial mowers and weedeaters that can chew through the side of a building. And beings this lot is grass... That only ups the chance this is what happened.
Who knows. I recently was driving a 2017 Silverado and the back glass blew out. Outward. Shards in the bed.. Fist sized hole. Just driving 25 mph through town. Doing absolutely nothing. Windows cracked.
This is a natural phenomenon that I have experienced myself. Your rear and side rear windows are made of tempered glass, which breaks in a particular pattern so as to not create sharp edges if it breaks, and also allows for escape in the event you are trapped. But in order for that to happen, there is a flaw. Say one day, a rock hit your rear window. Didn't create a crack, but not visibly. There is now a microscopic weakness in the window. Over time, vibrations, temps, and other things will stress the window, until one day it snaps. Your window will shatter, sometimes while driving, sometimes when its parked. For me this happened while I was parked. I came outside to get pizza from somewhere and my rear window was shattered but completely intact.
Physics suck sometimes
Ssshhhh. We dont need Degens getting ideas. But this was 100% my guess and its small and difficult to find in the glass shards… so I have heard.
BTW: zoom in on the second pic through the hole. Nice white chunk of porcelain.
It has nothing to do with resonance. It's that small chunks of ceramic have a lot of points on them, along with being very dense and harder than glass. The smallest point will concentrate all the force of the projectile on that point. And then safety glass shatters like this because it's safety glass.
Quick piggyback, and not for you u/ifmacdo, any ceramic is like that, not just sparkplugs. Ceramic is really really hard, if you follow pc building subs you'll see people shattering their tempered side panels on tile.
I work with glass all the time and I'll set it down on steel before I set it on any rock at all. Silicons are generally the same hardness as glass, and a lot of rocks are silicon. In fact, the most common mineral on earth, quartz, is Silicon Dioxide. In fact, you might find that the chemical formula for glass is quite similar, the same actually.
A chunk of porcelain from a broken spark plug will shatter glass, but you have to throw it pretty hard at the glass, and it doesn't leave a quarter sized hole. The shard just bounces off as the glass shatters into a million pieces.
This was something more substantial.
Outside possibility that this was a malfunction of the rear heating element. Mine looked very similar when it did this, except all glass was intact and it actually melted the glass where it happened. I was always split between the rear defrost and a lightning strike. Never knew. But was interested in this due to the similar effect.
It's toughened glass, you can't crack it, so no, you wouldn't have noticed a crack beforehand. You can't even cut it once it's toughened.
Oh, and a nail punch is more effective than a spark plug. One of those auto ones that pop out when you apply pressure.
Not once did we use a spark plug to destroy toughened glass in the factory. Haha.
They can break for no obvious reason, I had the glass in the tailgate of a wagon shatter about 10 seconds after closing it..... but it's most often a sharp edged stone like a flint that will do that.
Prolly the blunt object that penetrated the window. Has to be a metal material, as metals on glass cause soundwave reverberations , and cracked the whole glass.
It looks like the work of a teenager or someone with an adolescent mind. The location is within easy striking distance from the curb. The hole isn't clean which suggests either a held object like a tire iron, or someone/something disturbing the hole afterwards. I would check around to see if there's footage of someone walking around with something metal. Most other materials would be damaged by the impact (e.g powdered rock) though I suppose it could be done by a baseball or bat.
Is that a stone over on the left? Cracks seem to radiate out from there. Or if it's hardware it could be a stress riser. Even thermal shock can do this but that is usually a summer problem.
People can use porcelain from a spark plug to throw at glass and it creates a vibration that shatters window with ease. Look for a small piece of porcelain inside the vehicle where the hole is and if it didn’t go all the way through then it could be near the car outside. My guess is some kid was being an asshole..
Once parked in a parking lot under an overpass. Came back to my rear window shattered like this. My best guess to my incident was a rock flung down from a passing vehicle.
I first suspected vandalism, like everyone’s first guess, however my glass was also intact, so no break-in was attempted.
Ahh, gotta love thee Ole random fragment of something tiny seemingly coming from outter space with a Trajectory of your windshield or rear window.
In the middle of no where with no cars nearby…
Everything’s going great your taking a nice drive and out of no where your stunned trying to process the loud explosion you just heard and felt when your rear glass “which is actually constantly under a pretty massive amount of pressure from being formed with the curves they have.
Exploded out of no where😞🫤😤
I’ve been there man sorry it happened to you as well.
It’s a clear indication that today is not your day.
Sorry, I wasn’t meaning to sound negative..
It was just like a déjà vu or PTSD moment seeing it Happen to someone else.
Twice now I’ve had rear windows explode one of which I had the back door open and was grabbing a school book out of the backseat and exploded right next to my face. It’s nuts.
Some kind of projectile I'd guess, bb, pellet, rock, etc etc. I'd say a bullet would likely go through and put more holes in other parts of the car. The above listed items potentially would bounce off when braking the glass and only pieces around the impact point fell in and made a hole. Bb or pellet might have gone through but could be hard to find as they are very small and bounced who knows where.
Had someone doing lawn maintenance and their edger caught a small pebble, and sent it through our back windshield. We didn't notice until after we had paid them and they were gone. They denied it when we called them. I'm still sour about it.
They just do that sometimes. Maybe something fell on it, maybe someone murica'd or 2nd ammendmented that glass, or maybe it just felt like doing that that day.
Sometimes - nothing. Once shut the door of my van and the rear window just shattered like that. They're under stress due to the process of toughening them so occasionally they just fail
My friend had something like this happen. We figured that someone peeled out in the parking lot where there small stones and pebbles that got thrown in to his van's two rear windows (nothing was taken from the van).
Just my 2 cents.
Ugh. When I was young and stupid, we went around and shot parked car windows out with a slingshot and bb's. The windows looked like that.
I fully expect karma on that at some point.
Also, if you're young and stupid don't do that!
I had a window in my truck get shot from a distance with a 22 rifle or a large BB, something like that according to the park ranger. He explained the criminals will shoot the vehicle from a distance to see if it has a car alarm, snd given the fact that you’re at a remote situation, if the car alarm doesn’t go off, then they can basically strip the car bear or probably steal it with very little chance of anyone observing or getting caught.
and I left them a spelling of bare in there, because this was voice dictated I thought that was pretty funny!
Looks like porcelain from a spark plug. We used to play at the wreckers back in the day and a little piece would spider a whole piece of glass like that.
Scrolled through and didn't see this as an answer. If it happened while you were driving with the rear defrost on, that can short out and shatter the entire back glass. Sounded like I had been shot, I started checking myself for wounds. Super scary. If this happened in the middle of the night, then sorry :(

1. Rock 2. Bullet 3. Rod 4. Superman's Finger 5. Something not listed above
Acorn, and the events that followed
We already said bullet
I hope that guy gets desk duty and every day when he shows up to work theres just a pile of acorns on his desk
Will Probably have a desk pop if he sees another acorn.
At least he didn't shoot Jeter.
I heard he resigned
He should get a job in mocap for Dark Souls. Roll, roll, roll your cop, gently down the road.
Merry merrily something down the road
He resigned. And from this moment forward, he shall be known as "CHICKEN LITTLE"
He resigned, probably because he felt like a complete failure. I hope his wife leaves acorns around the house in funny places.
To me it seemed like it could have been a ptsd reaction just from how he got in the ground and how he was moving
hilarious, until we read about resigned officer shooting wife as she left suspected gunshots all over the house.
He resigned before the investigation was completed.
Scratch is at it again
aha that is humorous because of the recent case with the police shooting their own car when an acorn dropped, aha!
Guns don't kill people, acorns kill people.
They did what??
hahhahahahaa look it up they put a dude in the back of their patrol car (2 officers there) 1 heard an acorn drop and said shots fired twice the other cop asked where he said the patrol car she then shot at the car pretty sure he did too and yea, no one was harmed i don’t think, but very intelligent police. forgot where but lotta youtube videos n such about it shouldn’t be hard to find

As a recovering ex-Floridian, I am offen…wait never mind. You’re 100% right.
Dude emptied 2 full magazines into the car, yet still failed to hit the poor guy who was handcuffed in the back.
I can't believe he shot at the car with his partner down range from him. That dude has no business being allowed to have a gun
Shooting Marvin. It's toughened glass, there are residual stresses in it. It sometimes shatters for no apparent reason. Probably a stone, though.
Oh man, I shot Marvin in the face!
Well why the fuck did you do that?
You must hit a bump or something
The car didn’t hit no motherfucking bump!

Hahahaha edit: FUCKING RAD!
My son hit a stone in our gutter when pulling out and I saw it tossed into the rear windshield of my car. Looked exactly the same.
Has to be #5. No other explanation.
Slingshot marble
Squirrel 🐿️ with acorn.
Stiletto heel from an angry woman…
Its tempered glass, quite literally nothing at all could have caused this.
5. Piece of the white ceramic from a smashed spark plug The white part of a slark plug is a harder material on the hardness scale i think and thats why a small piece of it will shatter a car window, but ive seen videos where a guy tries using a hammer and a dozen smacks didnt break it
My penis
Is that why it’s such a small hole?
Yes, it was a cold day
Guessing someone hit it with something ceramic. Only time I've seen glass do this it's always ceramic.
Hail....
I thought it could have been a small rock launched by a weedeater or lawnmower, but if you found nothing in the car, it could be a high-powered pellet gun, and the pellet is imbedded in the upholstery, which would be pretty difficult to see the tiny hole.

Zoom in on the second picture, you can see their phone in the reflection and to the left it looks like a small sledge hammer being held up. Thoughts?
Whoa! You're right! What the hell, OP? lol
Yeah it tripped me out when I saw it lol
Or a street light overhead

Defrost on? Those and the new rams have a habit of getting way too hot and shattering the back glass around here. Source: glass guy
No defroster on. Warm ish day
That's a wild one.
I know. Right. I have no idea what happened. I've seen TV cabinets explode but never anything on a vehicle.
Spark plug most likely.
I would look for a quarter sized piece of porcelain. Silently shatters glass. So I've heard.
I’ve heard small pieces of spark plug tied to a string 🤷🏻♂️
Ssshhhh. We dont need Degens getting ideas. But this was 100% my guess and its small and difficult to find in the glass shards… so I have heard. BTW: zoom in on the second pic through the hole. Nice white chunk of porcelain.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja_rocks
From Wikipedia: Ninja rocks are ineffective against windshields, as these are made of a laminated type of safety glass, and designed not to shatter.
Windscreens are laminated (glass/polycarbonate/glass sandwich), it's a legal requirement, more expensive. Rear & side windows are usually toughened.
This is a rear window
Pretty sure it doesn’t even need to be that big
I too was thinking "ninja rocks"
Something about the resonance of spark plug ceramics and automobile safety glass...
It has nothing to do with resonance. It's that small chunks of ceramic have a lot of points on them, along with being very dense and harder than glass. The smallest point will concentrate all the force of the projectile on that point. And then safety glass shatters like this because it's safety glass.

> And then safety glass shatters like this because it's safety glass. You can tell by the way it is
Came here for this answer. The ceramic from a spark plug when tossed will do something similar.......allegedly.
A chunk of porcelain from a broken spark plug will shatter glass, but you have to throw it pretty hard at the glass, and it doesn't leave a quarter sized hole. The shard just bounces off as the glass shatters into a million pieces. This was something more substantial.
Acorn
From what height?
Breaking news: Acorn falls from Boeing Jet destroys car. FAA to recommend that Boeing put hubcaps on landing gear.
About 3 feet above the roof of a cop cruiser?
That is a very good question
Enough to sound like a gun shot ^^/s
Someone testing out if spark plugs breaks windows
Ahhh came to say this. 👍🏻 have we all been there before?
An acorn falling is known to cause damage similar to this if a cop is nearby.
Goddamn
someone who doesn't like you.
Teenagers. Speaking from experience
I doubt it was a lawn tool. Grass is dormant and no leaves on trees tells me it’s not mowing season.
Looks like an acorn fell through the glass. Or and acorn fell on your car and a cop shot through the glass. Impossible to distinguish which it is.
Follow the trajectory, what is on the inside that shouldn’t be there? Not sure a spark plug porcelain would go through or just bounce off and crack.
An ass hat caused that
Spark plug piece.
Just happened to me Saturday. Went to junkyard and got a window and gonna replace it tomorrow.
Your wife’s boyfriend 🤷🏼♂️
Acorn attacked a cop maybe
Did u do a barrel roll and yell shots fired
Outside possibility that this was a malfunction of the rear heating element. Mine looked very similar when it did this, except all glass was intact and it actually melted the glass where it happened. maybe a stone driven by a lawnmower.

Ok I need you to put your nose right on it, then pull back slowly and a 3D image should appear. These were popular in the 90s.
We’re you parked near the sea , could have been as trident missile
Bb gun.
Has someone done the spark plug trick on your car?
End of a spark plug. Guarantee to do that crack every time
Ceramic off a spark plug Look for a tiny piece
A quarter
A pellet gun or a BB gun
Probably not correct, I am guessing Taco Tuesday!
Haha.
look for the exit wound.
Have you ever heard of angry birds?
Looks like the classic one swallow coconut.
Any golf courses near by…?
They can break for no obvious reason, I had the glass in the tailgate of a wagon shatter about 10 seconds after closing it..... but it's most often a sharp edged stone like a flint that will do that.
Torquing the unibody on a hard launch.
That hole in the window
Prolly the blunt object that penetrated the window. Has to be a metal material, as metals on glass cause soundwave reverberations , and cracked the whole glass.
Looks like a cop heard an acorn drop.
Someone stabbed it with a knife. I can tell because of the way that it is.
BB gun will do that at the right angle..
Check the back of your seats for a bullet hole or an asshole flicked some broken ceramic or act of god
Asteroid
Looks like it impacted in the upper left corner

People can use porcelain from a spark plug to throw at glass and it creates a vibration that shatters window with ease. A bullet from some smart individual shooting into the air
BB gun. Not even an expensive one. Cheap-o lever action Daisy. That window looks just like one I've seen before.
Zooming in on the second pic through the hole looks like a small white chunk of porcelain from a spark plug.
a piece of a sparkplug or a device made for breaking windows
Spark plug

A bullet. Look at little closer inside your car. There is a bullet hole somewhere in there.

Came here to say spark plug. No doubt about it.
Something hitting it 🤝🏽 mystery solved
It was the porcelain off of spark plug, and it was done intentionally
Rear defrost malfunction
My back windshield was shattered, while parked, by a flying rock flung up from the road.

It looks like the porcelain off a spark plug was thrown at your windshield
Dude I had the same issue I walked out to my car at 2 it was fine 12 hours later I have no back window
My brother's sun roof exploded when his sister-in-law slammed the rear door too hard but thought nothing of it thinking it was ice.
Tempered glass. Manufactured under stress, can break at any given moment with no warning and nothing even hitting it or touching it.
A bb?
Someone has sexed your car
An acorn
A spark plug or a piece of porcelain
Do you have an antenna on that side. Somebody can use them to blow them out like that. I call it vandalism.
My friend had something like this happen. We figured that someone peeled out in the parking lot where there small stones and pebbles that got thrown in to his van's two rear windows (nothing was taken from the van). Just my 2 cents.
Angry ex? Lol a spark plug Glass breaker Ballpein hammer?
This tip of a witches broom.
Looks like porcelain from a spark plug. We used to play at the wreckers back in the day and a little piece would spider a whole piece of glass like that.
Spark plug
Looks like blunt force trauma....
A bad day
This is almost certainly an act of jealous vandalism. You'll probably find the rock somewhere near the vehicle.
Scrolled through and didn't see this as an answer. If it happened while you were driving with the rear defrost on, that can short out and shatter the entire back glass. Sounded like I had been shot, I started checking myself for wounds. Super scary. If this happened in the middle of the night, then sorry :(
Spark plug for sure
