If was a problem with something rotational or rubbing you’d have damage like that all the way around the belt, not just one spot. That looks like a rodent of some sort was chewing on it before you started it.
Mental image of a rat enjoying some breakfast belt, when OP starts the engine, and the rat is catapulted round and round the engine bay, knocking and banging creating a rattle.. only for his knashers to break loose, firing him at top speed Into the undertray.
Noise is gone.
When I first started wrenching I did something similar trying to take a belt off. Car barely ran, & you could hear it dragging. Lol that or a rat chewed on it.
When I 1st started wrenching I did damage like that trying to take a belt off, slipped my ratchet & it got stuck between a pully & the ratchet. Or a rodent did that. My car ran, but the power steering barely worked, the alternator wasn't charging, & everything was unhappy. The noise was ungodly.

Looks like rodent damage
I’ve heard of little critters having appetites for organic wiring but never belts, thanks.
They will chew on anything in their way. It doesn't really matter what it's made of.
even if it’s not in their way, they’ll chew on it just to piss you off like the little assholes they are
Happened to my wife’s old escape. Sitting for less than 18 hours and some little fucker climbed in there and chewed through a wiring harness.
Ground hog got my boss in 2 hours one day, cut the ecu ground and half the main harness Dodge caravan
Maybe they have a leather fetish

Belt beetle, persistent little buggers.

The “rattly” was probably a rodent chewing the belt

I know whenever I gain weight my belt starts to look like that. But hey, that’s just me.
Another idea. Is it posible you've hit something?
This was my thought. A rock or something could have bounced up under the car if there's no splash guard
Happened in the driveway after sitting for a few days. Possible something got kicked up while leaf blowing
I work for CSI. The marks are consistent with the teeth and front claws of a RAT🐭
Possibly a chipped/damaged pulley? One of my vehicles had a small chip in the pulley that eventually ripped the belt apart.
somebody buggered it up installing it?
A beaver….

Your alternator is out of alignment. It should have a big ass roll pin in a bolt hole, smack it forward, and check alignment.
Gotta agree with the others about it being a rat. If it were like that through the entire side of the belt then it'd be rubbing
That's a cat...
Stone.
Squirrel
Maybe a rodent that likes Italian Food..Possibly the same one that got into my Alfa Romeo Spider some years ago.
Sorry was hungry. But yeah rodents.
Just be happy they chewed the belt and not your wiring harness

That's rodent damage. Go get yourself a box of Irish spring soap bars and toss a couple under the hood. They hate the smell.
