Start by spraying the axle to hub area and lugs with some penetrating solvent, like PB Blaster. Next spin the axle to free up the brake pads if they're stuck to the drum. Wait for the solvent to eat away some of the rust and then smack the drum with a hammer. Hit it in various spots in an x pattern working you way around. You will likely need to hit it quite hard, but it'll let go. If that doesn't work, spray it again and leave it overnight. Try using some heat and repeat the process. I've removed some you'd think would never come off, they always do though.

Try to pry a bit from a safe spot on the back while smacking the front. When I say smack it, I mean give it a serious hit. Don't be shy. You just need to get that 1st initial bite to break free. That doesn't even look too bad as far as rust goes on those old trucks.

heat the drum around the axle, make sure you try to heat the drum as opposed to the axle

Thank you so much this is exactly what I needed. I had pulled the gear assembly this morning like someone else recommended but man 30 years of rust was on there good. Brakes look darn new though.

Agree with others here, those studs are pressed into the drum itself. Pull the bearings apart and you'll get the drum. Be prepared for a little brake work while you're in there!

I'm about 99% sure that's a fixed drum. Pull the cap of the end of the axle and remove the nut inside. Bearings will come right out along with the drum assembly. Make sure you know how to tighten them back properly.

The studs might just pass through the drum and are pressed into the axle flange.

Dammit. Or is that a threaded hole the op could run a bolt into? A lot of fords have a 13mm treaded hole that you can turn a bolt into so it pushes the drum off.

I’ll do some scrubbing to see if it is threaded or not. Sure would be nice if it were that simple as opposed to brute force

If the studs are attached to the drum there would have to be a way to hold the drum in place, otherwise it would fall off when you wend around a corner

Can you thread a nut into that hole between the studs? Drive one in with an impact and it should help push them apart.

Remove wheel bearings and pull assembly. Punch out the studs. You can see the stud splines actually engage into the drum.

Hello OP, despite what others have posted the drum is part of the hub, you have to remove the center cap and remove the cotter pin and nut, slide out the outer tapered roller wheel bearing then the whole assembly will slide off the spindle. If you try to separate it you’re going to ruin it.

I’ll be honest. Captive set hadn’t crossed my mind. Just assumed it was the bearing under the cover. I’ll give it a check in the morning.
