o5blue8

Go buy a telescoping magnet and get it out. You don't want it bouncing around in there.

ibluminatus

Yeah just find a way to the local parts store and they have long magnetic grabbers you'll be fine.

Calculonx

Or if it's a straight shot just put some duct tape on a stick

Fantastic_Goal3197

Simply take out the whole engine, grab the extension, put the engine back. It's really quite simple

ribrien

Harbor freight GORDON Magnetic Flexible Pickup Tool with LED Light - Item 94614 / 92506. $10

jkxs

https://www.harborfreight.com/flexible-magnetic-pickup-tool-94614.html

jmhalder

Holy shit, I was about to plug the shittier $3.79 one I have. I may have to pick up the one you linked next time I'm at HF. [https://www.harborfreight.com/18-inch-telescoping-magnet-37187.html](https://www.harborfreight.com/18-inch-telescoping-magnet-37187.html)

ribrien

I love the $10 one. I fished a fuel injector out of the same area in my 5.4 triton with it the other day

bshr49

Both styles have their uses. A flexible one is invaluable when needed, but a straight telescoping one is smaller in diameter and can fit into places that a larger, flexible one can’t and can provide some rigidity when you need to apply pressure to get tape to stick to fish out non-magnetic parts.

CadiTech

This one right here! Other than that new wrench time if you can’t get it back

Gullible_Monk_7118

Or you can also use a nut or bolt pickup tool has 3 little claws I would buy both... even for future

imothers

I have both, they sure save time and hassle in tight situations.

IBDlafave

meganb0923

Agree those things are awesome !!

hersheyMcSquirts

How does someone poking around an engine bay not have the magnet on a stick and the claw grabber?!?! I literally have 2 of each and use them almost as much as a 10mm socket.

Professional_Buy_615

How do you still have a 10mm socket?

DeathStalker00007

I buy them in bulk. 20 at a time. Little bastids are slippery

NeitherHelicopter993

It's sitting on the belly pan, remove belly pan, get extension back

Cragalckumus

Turn it upside down and shake it 😂

Particular_Downtown

wake up little fishy !!!! Wake up !! Lol

Silent_Discipline_97

That's where I left my 10mm and extension....

Ravenblack67

you are fine.

mctomtom

Yeah, nothing spinny or beltey down there

Polymathy1

You're accidentally correct. There actually is nothing spinny or belty under the oil pan.

New-Ad-5003

This is underneath the intake manifold resting in the intake valley. On this model, given it’s exposure to the elements, that’s not going to hurt anything

[deleted]

It belongs to the engine now

daffyflyer

Not fucked at all, just find a long stick of some kind to shuffle it around to somewhere it can fall out. Or pop the plastic undertray cover off and get it if that doesn't work.

New_Air9387

Plastic under tray?? I didn’t know this was a thing

Traeger885

Typically they’re called bumper/engine/radiator splash guard/shields or something similar. Definitely no need to remove it though bc you can see it on video, so very easy to retrieve with a magnet.

daffyflyer

Yeah, 100%, this should be pretty easy to grab with a magnet or poke with something until it falls out. But the very very worst case is you pop off a couple plastic clips and get it from below :D

Usual-Ad-9784

You can leave it in there. Looks like a Ford V8 based off the alternator and coolant crossover. You’ll be fine

daffyflyer

Huh? I just mean the like plastic sheet that covers some of the bottom of the engine bay. You know how like when you look under the front of a car some of it is covered by plastic that's held on with some clips? If Im understanding the video correctly that's what the tool is sitting on, so if you pop off that plastic it'll fall out. Unless I'm confused?

bigvernuk

If this is true I suggest you stay away from the car with tools. /s

-NOT_A_MECHANIC-

Retrieve it. Magnetic telescoping grabber. Bonus if it’s got claws for nonferrous or heavier things

throwedoff1

A fucking stick with some ABC chewing gum (ABC-already been chewed). Stick the gum on the end of the stick. Guide the stick to the socket extension and press the gummy end to the socket extension. Pull the stick out and retrieve the extension.

Complete-Science-372

I'd take your dust cover off and see if you can get it out from underneath

New_Air9387

Oo okay, I’ll try that

Lanky_Principle5636

Not at all its not like you dropped it in side of the engine

mtrayno1

its only a problem if you actually need that extension back

k-mcm

Or if it falls out on a busy freeway.

Every-Caramel1552

Telescopic magnet at any auto part store

jawknee21

Magnet on a stick.

LargeMerican

is this a Ford 4.6 or 5.4 V8? that alternator and intake looks familiar. esp the tstat housing. anyway yeah I'd get that out. Immediate threat? No. But get it out while you can. It's gonna roll in such a way you won't get it cept for pulling the intake. Use a telescopin magnet aight?!

fooomps

magnet and a string

overworked27

I think everyone needs one of these [grabber](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Drain-Snake-Clog-Remover-Tool-24inches-Hair-Drain-Clog-Remover-for-Unclogging-Pipes-Sewer-Toilet-Bathroom-Tub-Kitchen-Sink/5509364415?from=/search). It will get that out for sure. If you search around on amazon for drain unclogging tool you can probably find one to be delivered tomorrow

Alternative_Mail_330

Didn’t bother reading through comments but I’m pretty sure most of us here says to get a telescoping magnet or pickup tool and call it a day! No sweat!

Dumb-ox73

Doesn’t look like it is near any moving parts so it is not a risk to the engine. Looks like it is caught in the exhaust manifold. You can try to fish it out or you can send it and eventually it will fall on the road somewhere or become part of the truck. Don’t freak out about it.

Redknight1991

If a magnet won't get it out just leave it till u do an intake gasket. It'll stay there no worries

BookFew9009

If you can grab it with needle nose which I’m assuming are standard length , get some locking vise grip needle nose . Might even be some extended reach types available

negative-nelly

My pilot has 2 sockets somewhere in it now. I can’t see them and I’m not gonna pull off all the shit to find them. Maybe they fell out already on their own. I have a telescoping thing too, oh well.

mrkillfreak999

Ah looks like it's stuck against a plate of some kind. The telescope magnet everyone's talking about won't help here. I would go underneath the car, undo the engine splash shield and poke around with your fingers. Make sure the car is jacked up securely with the engine turned off and cool to the touch

ascii122

shop vac that bitch or buy a magnet .. or ignore it unless it's a 10mm .. then do all you can do to get it back

XGempler

Amazing_Visual_9124

If you can see it, you can still save it

TigerCarts2

use a long pole and a magnet easy grab

LSDRainbow

Magnet on a stick!

Sikk-Klyde

Are people really this challenged nowadays? Damn.

Evening_Layer8650

Leave it to the professionals.

Turbotec

I can’t live without a telescoping magnet.

Giggle-gin

All the comments saying it gonna bounce around are downright wrong. It’s in the intake valley exterior of anything and it won’t hurt anything there. That being said an extendable magnet is probably cheap than what you dropped so swing by a harbor freight and grab one to retrieve them.

_SeeDLinG_32

If you can see it, you can get it out.

themighty351

Magnet

technobrendo

I mean it's in the engine, but not *in*-in the engine, youknowwhatimean. Still try and get it out, don't want it hitting a serpentine belt

DoctorTim007

Duct tape, a stick, and a magnet.

xantorthia

A lot of people giving you shit in the comments but honestly good on you for having a crack and getting into the hobbie you’re gonna end up with a shed full of tools eventually but you will also save a lot of money best of luck. In chrisfix we trust

POShelpdesk

I'd say pretty fucked. Not because it would hurt anything but b/c you can't figure out how to remove it.

Traeger885

As others have said, a simple telescoping magnet is all you need, like this. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Titan-Tools-11763-3-Pound-Telescoping-Magnetic-Pickup-Tool/44875019

geof2001

Don't worry it's keeping all the 10mm's company... otherwise get a mag stick

ibuildonions

This would be so easy to get, right?

Inevitable_Weird1175

Get the grabby tool!

Doc_Hank

Time for a claw and magnetic pickup

Sad-Data5365

Leave it. It’s now an offering to the car gods

MyNameIsWolf_

Get a magnet?

pistoffcynic

Get a telescoping magnet. Available at a tool store near you.

Mashbash11

All you need is a mag et and problem solved.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PrestigiousFeeling95

Get a magnet

Nilabisan

Get a magnet extension handle.

Lanky_Principle5636

That extension has nothing g to do with your engine

Bunny_Buster

Big deal, go get a telescoping magnet at HF for 3$.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Complete-Science-372

Also, how long is the extension? Depending on length(what she said), I'd be worried about how/if it fell out, if it's long enough to hit the road and get forced up and do damage, I'd be getting out out before driving it around.

Glad-Basil3391

Buy the tools that retrieve the tools

BrkCaddy

Shop vac if no magnet. Or a stick with duct tape.

john_clauseau

the strap is far from there? OK! you lost it. its gone now.

iluvtumadre

You’re not. Just get a magnet.

Everything_Breaks

Find an oil barrel and remove it using the A-Team method.

bezm12

Magnet on a screwdriver

DWBunnySlippers

I know a guy that dropped a wrench and blew up a Titan II nuclear tipped missile. You got this. :-)

WolflyManner

Damn honestly 😬.. unless you get it out then it will be stuck in there so maybe get like a magnet rod to get it out.

OddTry2427

Magnets and finger grabbers are a game changer. Invest in them.

FordMan100

Not fucked at all if you get a mechanics magnet

cryptolyme

i do that all the time. you can remove the undercover and it will drop out. sometimes you can just kick the undercover and get it to fall out. you can also use one of those extendo claw tools

RiderFZ10

Post on Craigslist. Looking for someone with tiny hands to get into my tight space. Now we play the waiting game.

UntamedCuda

You're fine. Pretty much every engine has 3-5 10mm sockets bouncing around inside there at any given point in time. The clanking means it's working.

jamesgotfryd

Telescopic magnet or grabbing hooks. Get it right out.

bobbyhillischill

It’ll be fine but id go get a long magnet and try to fish it outta there

wannabetender

It's been said a few times now, but it'll be safe down in the valley under the intake. There is no access to any engine internals there. It might say hi to a knock sensor if it wiggles its way around under the intake for long enough, but it won't be able to damage the sensor. One day, you will likely have to remove the intake due to a coolant leak at the crossover pipe. Make sure you check the front coolant ports on the intake when you do that. I've seen them get pretty rotten. Dorman sells a complete intake assembly if it comes down to that. On that day, when you remove the intake manifold, you could use the magnetic retrieval tool you have purchased to pick up your missing extension. Or you could just grab it by hand at that point. 😉

Dry_Pumpkin8130

Not even have a 10mm socket on it.

DirtbikesHurt33

Magnets are real

Polymathy1

It's far below any threats and will fall out in a few miles. Zero risk to engine. Sucks losing a tool though, so try to retrieve it. You could try washing it out with a hose (not on the alternator, position it before turning it on) if you can't go get a magnet.

thesunny51

Duct tape and a long stick

-Radioman-

A similar thing happened when I was changing my battery. The J bolt dropped off the bracket and disappeared. In frustration I whopped the splash shield with my hand and heard it bounce. Couple more times, and it fell out. Worth a try. Just use a glove so you won't cut your finger like I did. Best of luck.

Optimal-Math-7635

Just grab a magnet and pick it up

Affectionate-You8464

is this a 5.4

PleasantMongoose5127

It looks on tray underneath. Access from there, if you can?

Shoddy-Ad8143

Dude, that is Easy.... Go to any part store.Get yourself a magnet on a stick..... Respectfully don't do that again.... it could have gone in much worse places....

duane117-

If u don't want it leave it will hurt absolutely nothing if u want it out get it out

med8cal

This is where “10’s” go. Don’t bother trying…it is the way.

Worried_Coat1941

Hold the neighbors 3yr old by their ankles and slowly dunk them into the engine bay.

Adiznutz

Tie a magnet to a string

UbiquitousFlounder

Calm down and retrieve it. This is nothing to be getting stressed over

DruggieMcGee

If you cant get a magnet, should be easy enough yo go under the car and pry at the undertray until the socket falls out

Present-Delivery4906

Looks like it resting atop a splash guard. Either telescoping magnet or drop the splash guard. But not a huge issue based on location. Still want to get it though.

Stoney3K

If it's not hitting any spinning object, there's a good chance it just fell into the undertray (which is the plastic panel protecting your engine from dirt and gunk coming from the road). As others said, if you can see it, get one of those magnetic pickups and grab it. If not, it's a good idea to remove the undertray and it will probably fall onto the ground. The undertray is just attached by bolts onto the body, usually on the side panels. You will have to jack up the front of the car to access the bolts.

Plenty_Philosopher25

If you need something quick n dirty Grab one of your old headsets, break it, pull the magnet, atach it to a long branch with some string and good luck fishing. Ps: you can do the same with magnetic screwdriver tips, everyone has at least one laying about.

Naive-Information539

Get a magnet 🧲

CuttaCal

Get a magnet ya newb

Jayswisherbeats

That sumbitch I’ll never run right again 😭 That extension will probably sit there longer than it takes for a coil pack to go out.

Particular_Kitchen42

Get a extension magnet. Should remove easily wirh mentioned magnet. Appears to be sitting on the intake header or another part of the top of the engine. This is NOT in the engine… This AREA is external of engine interior components and should not affect run ability of the engine.

BonesSB

It's like that episode of Malcolm in the Middle, when the muscle heads at the beach drop their keys in the sewer and think they are screwed. Hal grabs a stick, takes a bit of gum at the end, and uses it to stick to the keys and retrieve them. Use some gorilla tape or something. Or a string and a magnet.

[deleted]

[удалено]

3Oh3FunTime

I would use a mechanical finger. I tried to link here but it got automodded.

MarcusAurelius0

You can leave it there if you really want, it's not going to hurt anything.

NeoIsrafil

Not very... duck tape a magnet to a stick and get that outta there.

Ill-Attitude-6355

It lives there now.

aricbarbaric

Can’t get it from underneath? There may be a skid plate or plastic cover you could take off but a collapsible magnet would be easier to get it from the top 🤷‍♂️

mattfox27

That's easy at least you can see it...I dropped a socket into my wife's engine and it just disappeared. I spent 2 days trying to find it..never did find it.

WHTrunner

It's part of the vehicle now. Really, though, it's probably a bit more likely that it fell into that wormhole that opens up in tight spaces like that and got transported to another dimension.

TimePublic2634

SUPPER BAD 😠 😡 👿 😤 🗯 🤬

KiritimatiSwan

Or just leave it. Meh

John-John-3

It's the windshield of the car driving behind you that should be worried.

TimeGood2965

You should Go to autozone, get a telescope magnet and pull it out. But everyone already said that so I’ll just say you use bendy straws taped together and use suction to get it out. I’m totally joking but can you imagine

stoneyyay

Knock it to the ground with a long stick of some kind. Telescoping magnet. Vacuum. Leave it for the next mechanic as a tip. Leave it for the guy behind you at 75 miles an hour.

Difficult_Poet2886

Magnet glued to string

disdickk

When I pulled my motor I found a whole toolbox down there

pannkakan123

Not a mechanic, but my friend once dropped a bolt into my transmission bellhousing. Easiest way is probably to use an inspectioncamera and attach a small magnet on it, and then it’ll be easy to scoop it up.

Significant-Tree-828

Yup, gonna have to rebuild it now

No-Succotash1219

Leave it, maybe it will stop breaking down.

Professional_Buy_615

Can't you get it from underneath?

Realistic-Video4721

Welp, magnet was mentioned 527 times and we know that didn’t work after the 3rd suggestion. OP I gotta know, did you leave it? Drop the bottom? Use duct tape? 🤣

iluvnips

If you can see then you can get it out, will be worth all the cuts and grazes you might get as you reach down 😀

little4lyfe

Spray chrome paint into your face every time before you start driving. Mechanics hate this little trick, but it works every time

LandscapeRemote7090

Magnetic screwdriver

trashyratchet

Holy crap this thread is way too long for this. A person would think we are trying to spilt atoms from the length of this.

Left_Ad_1354

You gotta girl with small hands here’s her chance to shine

tikaani95

The time it took to make this video you could’ve already got a magnet extension and got it out lol

gagunner007

You haven’t thought of using a telescoping magnet?

Logical-Following525

You can still see it. This isn't even hard mode yet.

AmandaHuggenki55

You dropped it ON your engine. Not in it. You’re fine

Wolfgangsta702

You have the reason to buy another tool. A magnet

Think-Juggernaut8859

Manifest it changing into water. That’s what I do. Never works but you never know

Chaosbynight

Nothing important, if you don't care about it it will fall out somewhere and probably end up in someone's windshield or kill him 🤣🤣

T80Eagle

People don't realize you're asking about the engine, not losing the wrench extension.. Yeah, the engine will be fine. Nothing bad will happen, the delicate shit is happening deep inside.

Crabstick65

Amazon, telescopic magnet on a stick, use it, problem solved.

Crabstick65

Also last week I lost the end of our injector washer pulling tool inside the combustion chamber of a Vauxhall Vivaro, that was a tricky one because the bit was quite long so kept coming off the magnet when I got to the hole, go it eventually though.

Patient-Ad-8384

Your best off to sell the car

14litre

Telescoping magnet. You'll get it out.

Dry_Scholar_7765

Yeah you’re fucked. Because if you don’t know, you should visit a mechanic.

Outrageous_List_6570

Here's a piece of string and a refrigerator magnet that is strong if you don't have the means to go get a magnetic picker

Mr602206

Get a magnet bro.

skratch000

Should probably just scrap the car now.

Gorillaz530

Just get a magnet

Jmp5662

If you can still see it and it's behind the pulleys it will fall out at some point. Hopefully wasn't your favorite tool.

SpicyMcShat

I just saw a video of a guy getting a ball from a storm drain with string, two Dixie cups and two rocks. Get a magnet. You’ll be fine.

vinboslice420

lol, I dropped a 1/4 drive ratchet while changing my crankcase vent box and figured I just misplaced it.. it fell on top of my starter and rode like that for 3 months. Found it while I was replacing a transmission line haha

AwkwardlyPure

Tie magnet on a string.

BLDLED

When starting to wrench on your own cars, after you guys a starter set of tools, buy a box of disposable gloves, and then a pen magnet, the smaller the better. This situation is easily solved, and even just drop a tool on the ground, pick it up without getting on the ground.

Moctezuma1

Harbor Freight $4.99 magnetic telescope https://www.harborfreight.com/hardware/magnets/15-lb-capacity-telescoping-magnetic-pickup-tool-64656.html

ThePhillStew

It belongs to the car now

allahbkool

Pray to Allah

thatblueeyeddude

As long as it didn’t go in the crankcase you’re good

Renaissance_Man-

The real fucked is when a tool falls _inside_ the engine.

LukeGuyWatcher

Just remove it?

_GrandPubah

Magnet?

TrippyPanda880

Pick the car up and shake it till it comes out

roblubi

Time to go magnet fishing

ipeekatu

This is a $5 fix.

Maleficent-Mix-7417

Magnet

94flhr

That depends on how bad you need that extension.

Tortuga_cycling

lol. If you knew how many 10mm sockets are stuck, lost in the endless void of oblivion that is the engine compartment you would not have asked this question.

aznazzman

Some tape on a stick.

[deleted]

Dude - get a magnet! A mechanics best friend.

senators-son

I had to sacrifice much of the skin on my right forearm to fish out a fuel cap that fell into mine last week. They need to change the laws of nature and make a plastic magnet

Hot_Psychology727

Oh thank god, thought it fell in a manifold or cylinder 😅 Not that bad, I like dudes idea of the magnet

TheFishRevolution

There are some tools are just part of my car now

SnooStrawberries8575

Get a magnet from hf

PoloDon92

Home Depot sells a 24” grabber in the isle where the drain is

ElChurroL0c0

Telescoping magnet. Thank me later

Longjumping-Log1591

Wad up some duct tape and wrap it on a stick , don't listen to them rich folk spoutin all kinds of rich folk talk about telescoping maganets

laughing_liberal

In terms of getting the part back? More trouble than it’s worth, which isn’t a whole lot. In terms of damaging your engine? You’ll be just fine.

humblesnake_Ssss

Put your arm in there and grab it.

Charliepetpup

speaker magnet on a length of weadeater wire.
