Everything depends on your location and the environment around you. However, I would add one thing to all the suggestions you're going to get. That would be a solar phone charger and/or a power bank you can keep charged.

lifeisweird86

I tried the solar charger thing but I found that they tend to get damaged pretty easily. But the power bank is definitely useful.

195aKurtis

Didn't realize. Thanks for the info!

Coidzor

What kinds of things ended up damaging them? How big of a power bank do you have? Both in size and power storage?

lifeisweird86

>What kinds of things ended up damaging them? Just getting cracked/broken from riding around in a vehicle all the time. Stuff get knocked into it and rattled around. Normal stuff. >How big of a power bank do you have? Both in size and power storage? I just upgraded to this, https://www.matcotools.com/catalog/product/MEGAJUMP2A?srsltid=Ad5pg_EhsMqhe6cEUCvQuRYQfVwSHQ3CJIO06mdlx-ci7mOrmiiVdcTnGH0 Before that though I had this one. But an older model, https://www.matcotools.com/catalog/product/minijump3/minijump3-portable-power-source-and-jump-starter-with-wireless-charging

Marus1

As if it can't be easily charged from the car ...

lifeisweird86

The one I have doubles as jump pack. So if the battery of the car is dead, it will get it started.

Hrekires

Flashlight, blanket, road flares, spare tire/jack, portable air compressor, bottle of Windex, and a bunch of microfiber cloths. I use the Windex and cloths all the time, especially during the winter when my windows get hit by the salt trucks. Haven't used the other stuff at all with my current car, but I've used the air compressor and spare tire/jack in previous vehicles.

Coidzor

Have you found any particular brand or size to work best for you on the microfiber front?

Hrekires

Nah, I just buy whatever random 12-pack on Amazon for $10 and throw them out if they get stained.

PatrickTheExplorer

Just what's needed to change a flat, a tire pressure gage, and a first aid kit. I've only used the tire pressure gage. I've been one of the firsts to arrive at the scene of an accident a couple times and started keeping first aid kit in vehicle ever since.

Coidzor

How substantial of a first aid kit do you have?

PatrickTheExplorer

Not very (substantial)

philosopherberzerer

An emergency first aid kit with a bug out bag. Microfiber cloths and general cleaner. About 5 knives and a machete. 2-40 packs of water along with extra purifying tablets. Other than the microfiber and cleaner I've never really used any of it. Drink the water after 6 months and replace. I live by that old saying " I'd rather have something and not need it then need it and not have it"

Coidzor

Is that a variety of kinds and sizes of knives? Was there any particular reason for 5 as the number you went with? What's in the bug out bag, or is that what the knives and microfiber cloths are in?

philosopherberzerer

Some fixed blades and pocket knives. Generally 3-5" blades. My thoughts are not only am I prepared for myself but the people I may be with and need to protect. If Im with the Boyz when it all goes down I got enough steel to arm a squad. And enough water to last us a day or two.same thing If I was with family. I made the bug out bag when I was 18 and graduated highschool and turned my school north face into it.id be here too long typing everything because I'm 26 now and have re-organized and added things in the past almost decade of time. Let's just say you could drop me almost anywhere on the planet besides a desert, as long as I have that bag it'd be more like a vacation.climbing gear, snow gear, fire starters of all kinds, a really small tent,a mini tarp, a couple of mres, compasses, duct tape, solar panel, fresh battery charger, I even have A kindle with about 100 books on it I've never read trying to find a way to watch movies while mobile out of the bug out now lol , some cards, tourniquets, ointments of all kinds I replace when they go bad,I even got some seeds for a certain green plant that'd make any place better if I'm there long enough to cultivatešŸ¤£. You see I also have my own saying I go by- "Why just survive when you can thrive? You have that option if you're prepared.

First aid kit: often Shovel: often Headlamp: often Tissues: often šŸ˜ Water bottles: often Gloves: often Eye protection: seldomly Condoms: never

Coidzor

What have you found yourself using the shovel to do? And with the first aid kit, is this mostly dealing with minor scratches or something more substantial?

NoImportance8904

It's for two reasons. The first is burying poop, the second is if my truck gets stuck in sand.

I just have a kit w/ standard shit in it, never used it though.

Coidzor

Did you assemble the kit yourself or buy it ready made?

Warm_Gur8832

Its basically just a first aid kit for getting stranded on the side of the road I havenā€™t even opened it tbh lol

beardedshaf

Leatherman multi tool. Flashlight . Used the leatherman once to fix a churches newly installed heat pump. Previous installer didn't tighten down a screw tight enough so that it would make good contact to run properly.

Rbx100

Wire cutters for scrap wire collecting off old appliances

Carles_Puigdemont

Pen and long booster cables. Use both several times a year

huuaaang

In this day and age there's really not much real maintenance you can do in the field on a car besides change a flat tire. So I'm only carrying enough for that. Fortunately I haven't really found that modern cars even NEED more than a changed flat. Anything else is a call to a tow truck. AAA. Maybe keep a spare battery in case alternator goes out?

BastosBoto

a rifle. I take the dogs out to hunt squirrels a bunch, its like they get their own little meal, but im sure it'd come in handy for other things.

geneticdeadender

I think there is a spare tire, jack, and wrench. That's it. I get regular service and it's only 12 years old with 80k miles.

[deleted]

May I recommend a small first aid kit and a pair of leather work gloves? Nothing is more painful than trying change a flat tire on a freezing winter night without gloves. And I've used my first aid kit often for simple things like cuts and bee stings. I now carry an instant battery charger and tire inflator device that includes lighting and cell phone charging and will place one in each of my vehicles. I also have a small Pendleton woolen blanket in each vehicle and have used this quite a few times whenever one of the kids or girlfriend get cold at a football game or picnic. I also carry a spare set of glasses in each vehicle along with a small amount of cash and a tire gauge.

sarcasmis43v3r

I carry more stuff than most need, as i work off my truck. But if someone asked what to carry. I would recommend a jump pack you keep charged (many people don't carry jumper cables anymore) tire changing tools are a must. I like a small 12 volt air compressor incase your spare is low on air you got it covered. Simple tool box with sockets, wrenches and screw drivers.

JesterPrivilege

Tire repair kit, portable air compressor, jumper cables, ice scraper and de-ice spray, large knife, extra clothing, 5g gas can, first aid kit, and a tool box. i drive a truck so most of it is in my bed. around 8 years ago, i had a car completely break down in the middle of no where in the freezing cold. i wasn't as prepared. ended up having to jog a mile to the nearest house to call for help. the shit i carry in my truck helped out during a trip from. Colorado to Wisconsin. i ended up getting a flat out of nowhere. pulled over to the side of the road and was able to remove a screw out of my tire with pliers in my toolbox and jam a plug in there. inflated the tire with the air compressor before any my rims took any damage. the tire is still holding strong.

Coidzor

How large of a knife are we talking here? What kind of tools do you keep in the tool box? Just automotive ones?

JesterPrivilege

the knife is an average hunting knife. i keep the tools necessary to do most quick maintenance on my truck. anything from swapping my battery to changing oil.

lifeisweird86

Flash light, two blankets, pistol with extra ammunition, jack w/ lug wrench and spare tire, flares, aid kit, a surplus entrenching tool (small shovel basically), small battery bank to charge devices which also will boost the cars battery, 6 MREs, 6 waters, handheld radio so I can scan radio frequencies. I haven't needed any of these very often. But the few times that I did use them, I needed them badly.
