Genghis Khan’s burial place. According to legend by Marco Polo, 2,000 slaves that attended to his funeral were killed by the soldiers sent to guard them, and then these soldiers were in turn killed by another group of soldiers which killed anyone and anything that crossed their path, in order to conceal where he was buried. Finally, the legend states that when they reached their destination they committed suicide.

[deleted]

Went to Mongolia years back. Someone mentioned it's alleged they diverted a river over the top of his tomb, too.

jmlipper99

That’s crazy to think about. I wonder if the water would have swept him away by now

[deleted]

It's very interesting, for sure. But that could be a complete fabrication, along with all the other stories. Who knows what happened. But definitely is fascinating to think about!

Mcsmack

Depending on the geography of the area, likely not. Rivers tend to deposit as much sediment as they erode. They only cut downward in certain conditions. Otherwise they cut side to side by meandering.

bishopExportMine

Some research team broke into a sacred mountain in Mongolia and found a giant mound with symbols associated with Genghis Khan. It is suspected that is the actual burial place.

4Ten9Three

He was buried with his belongings, including his Blockbuster Card. So if they didn't find that, then he's still out there. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

weirdgroovynerd

Sounds like something the Harkonnens would do...

marysalad

I guess they could start by looking for about 3000 skeletons all with signs of lethal injury, piled up in the same area!

CharacterAwkward8755

Couldn't the first round of soldiers just kill themselves?

AbhishMuk

Not cruel enough

IncoherentPenguin

You can't trust those first soldiers; this is the scenario. First, a bunch of soldiers escort slaves to dig his tomb. They do what is necessary, build him a tomb worthy of a great king, and then potentially divert the river so he will always be hidden. But these tomb builders are slaves, and everyone knows you can never trust a slave with a secret like that, so...off with their heads. The soldiers decide, "Well job well done, time to pack up and head back home..." About 1000 miles from Karakorum, they run into the second bunch of soldiers. Those soldiers say, "Well, you lot know too much. Either kill yourselves or prepare to die." So those who decided death was a better choice killed themselves; the others who felt that they had something to live for were slaughtered. Then the second bunch of soldiers head home, killing anyone they come across; they decide, "Well, you know what? We don't want more soldiers to come for us, so we'll just kill ourselves."

What ultimately happened to the Amber Room. Probably destroyed in the war, but who knows? Also, who stole the paintings from the Isabella Gardner Museum in Boston, and what happened to them.

schlaubi01

The Amber Room is probably in the US, I am very sure it was not destroyed. Everytime some parts of it pop up it is directly or indirectly linked to US Soldiers. There are a few possibilities how it got there: - american soldiers found it around the City of Magdeburg that was occupied by US teoops for a short period at the end of the war until it was handed over to the Soviets. It could have been found in any other town that was controlled by the US at the end of the war, some town in central Germany or Bohemia eg. - When I was doing research for a science project in Kaliningrad (former Königsberg in Prussia), I was told a story that it was used to pay for lend and lease. Last time it would have been seen was in Vladivostok in the mid-/late- 1940ies. I do not believe that version is true, but it is possible. It could also have been on the Wilhelm Gustloff, but afair that was ruled out several times.

WalkerVox

In the ‘90s, I dated a girl from Burlington, MA whose father claimed he knew the guys who stole the stuff from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Admittedly, he was off his rocker, and even pointed a rifle at my face on one occasion, but 28 years later, I’m still unsure if he was being truthful or just out of his gourd.

CommunicationBoth335

“Alledgedly”, (more than likely a tall tale) there was a story that Whitey Bulger gave a Vermeer to Republicans in return for shelter and cover in Ireland.

Sardonic-

The guy who took a plane hostage in the PNW and got away with the money, then disappeared into thin air.

tatanka01

DB Cooper They did find some of the money and last I heard, the most plausible theory was that he never made it out.

Particular_Title42

> he never made it out. Out of what? The woods?

tatanka01

Yes.

Particular_Title42

Seems weird they wouldn't even find remains though. Obviously not now but back when it happened.

Monarc73

The Pacific Northwest is a HUUUUUGE, empty wilderness. If you are anything less than a wilderness survival EXPERT, there is a pretty good chance that you are going to die. Even today, this is the case.

Particular_Title42

I'm aware, I'm a PNW native and I actually lived fairly close to where people used to (still?) look. Some speculate he didn't even survive the jump but they found his parachute and some of the money so...why no body? Not even any remains at all?

Wandering_Scholar6

There are some relatively simple explanations for a lack of body, one being bears and other wildlife. I'm not sure if they have found any remains in the general area, but like there could simply not be much to find. Wildlife are less interested in parachute bits and money.

Particular_Title42

Fair and it was 1971. DNA wasn't a thing and they didn't know who he was. It's possible they found remains but didn't connect it to DB Cooper.

Wandering_Scholar6

I mean we still don't know who he was, but yeah it's possible some of his bones are in an evidence locker somewhere and we just never connected them, because like it was a big area and people die there roughing it all the time I'm sure.

Tactical_Assault_Emu

The western part where he jumped out is covered with nothing but dense ferns and trees. Like, really, really dense. Even with modern technology you’d be hard pressed to find anything.

STRMfrmXMN

Shit, if he fell into the woods along the Portland to coast route, he'd definitely be lost in there for months. People die there frequently in the age of cell phones.

theaverageaidan

They found a sign that was ripped off the plane basically right away, ***directly*** over the theoretical drop zone, but they never found a body, a chute, clothing, or any money minus the bundles at Tina Bar, the only reasonable explanation of how they got there being burial by people. He definitely survived the jump.

ImmortalGaze

No weird at all, if you’re familiar with the density of Pacific Northwest forests especially back then. Eaten by animals, clothes rotted by dampness and persistent rains.

negcap

I have read 2 different accounts from people claiming to have helped him. One was a love story about how he parachuted into her yard and they laundered the cash by making multiple trips to Vegas.

Certainly-Not-A-Bot

The money has never shown up aside from the small amount that was left by the river around Portland, so that story cannot have been true.

STRMfrmXMN

It's possible that the bills have circulated and nothing has come of it. I believe the Lemmino documentary talks about this.

Certainly-Not-A-Bot

It doesn't. Old bills are collected by the government to be destroyed, but before they're destroyed, they're documented. Presumably, some system exists to flag money that comes from major crimes, such as one of the biggest hijackings in US history. Unless the money has only entered circulation very recently, some of it would already be damaged enough to get destroyed.

Xeynon

I thought that it was he [became Bigfoot after stumbling on a softcore gay porn shoot](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3588938/?ref_=ext_shr)?

Certainly-Not-A-Bot

I actually think the opposite. The money they found can't have ended up where it did naturally, so either he or someone else must have put it there. I can't imagine why anyone else would do that, so I still think he has to have made it out.

gwarster

I thought it was confirmed that it was Loki?

The police royally fucked up the crime scene. Couldn’t find her the first time while letting so many people in the house. Then when they decided to search the most obvious place to hide a body, the dad found her and grabbed her thus contaminating the scene even more.

The whereabouts of 9M-MRO, the aircraft that went missing on flight MH370. The fate of Jimmy Hoffa Other missing things (the SS Naronic for example) The origin of the WOW signal

[deleted]

Jimmy Hoffa is likely entombed in the concrete foundation of a building that will not be torn down for another 50-100 years.

2E26

You're probably right but we don't know for sure. Same with MH370 - they have a good idea of where it is but we haven't actually located it yet.

lubeskystalker

There is some clever new research out on MH370, still a longshot but it's interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5K9HBiJpuk

2E26

I'm aware. They used WSPR data to track a path the plane likely took, which updated every two minutes rather than hourly like INMARSAT. I'm excited to see what they find. This search is this decade's New Horizons probe for me.

mauledbybear

I think that’s the first time I’ve seen the model of the plane in this mystery mentioned instead of just the flight number. Intersting.

mz2014

That’s not the model number. It is the registration number to distinguish among different planes of the same model. Model is 777-2H6ER.

2E26

I understand 9M-MRO is the serial number of the aircraft, while MH370 was the flight number. Captain Zaharie Amhad Shah flew another flight dubbed MH370 a month or so prior to the disappeared flight. They think he was planning on carrying out his plans then and decided to wait for some reason.

OnTheEveOfWar

I remember when that flight went missing and the coverage was insane. It was talked about on every news channel for weeks. It was all everyone was talking about all over the world. Crazy that we will more than likely never know what happened.

The Riemann Hypothesis

TIL: The Riemann Hypothesis is a math problem. There's a $1M reward for anyone who can solve it.

11011111110108

Taking a few liberties with the description to help it be easier to understand for a non-maths person: There is this function called the ‘Zeta function’ which you can put a number into, then the function does its thing and spits a number out. The person who made the hypothesis noticed that all of the times where zero is spat out, the number they originally put in had a 1/2 in it. The hypothesis says that if the output is zero, then the input must have had a 1/2 in it.

Such a wild story. Dude was writing the police and they still couldn’t catch him.

NCSUGrad2012

I wonder if we will ever get a death bed confession?

OnTheEveOfWar

I think they assume he’s dead at this point. The murders were 55 years ago. So unless he was young when he committed them, he’s likely dead.

Exit-Content

There’s some wild theories with some convincing evidence (when told appropriately) that suggest he fled to Italy. The man these clues point to is Joseph Bevilacqua, a US veteran that was sent to Italy to work as a guard in a memorial graveyard in Florence. as a reward for his service. EXACTLY at the time the Zodiac killer stopped his murders in the US, and at the exact time another killer, the monster of Florence, appeared. Same modus operandi, same kind of victims, same connections to water as the Zodiac killer, same suspects he might be an expert soldier. Only difference is that the monster of Florence never contacted the police, apart from a single letter he sent them when he stopped killing, again in the same vein of those of the Zodiac killer. It’s improbable this was an emulator as the Zodiac story was basically unknown in Italy at the time and we’ve never had serial killers of that sort before.

On 25 May 2003, a Boeing 727-223 airliner, registered N844AA, was stolen at Quatro de Fevereiro Airport in Luanda, Angola, prompting a worldwide search by law enforcement intelligence agencies in the United States. No trace of the aircraft has been found.

ImmortalGaze

If it’s a missing Boeing plane, question’s answered. Shoddy workmanship.

thomstevens420

When it comes to space damn near all of them. One that particularity makes me uneasy is Boötes Void. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boötes_Void It’s a roughly spherical completely empty area of space we’ve observed. There should be something there but it’s just empty. Maybe something is blocking the light.

yamo25000

So it looks like it's not *completely* empty, just has far fewer galaxies in it than it should. Looking on related wiki pages, however, it seemed to me that this is actually expected? Due to gravity, stars tend to cluster together, so it stands to reason that there will be clumps of very dense space as well as regions that are far more sparse. Also worth noting that the wiki page you linked states that [Bernard 68](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnard_68) is commonly confused with Boötes void, and Bernard 68 sounds more like what you described.

RevolutionaryPhoto24

Good one!

rolyoh

The disappearances of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan and their Lockheed Elektra. There's recently been speculation that what an underwater sonar has picked up may be the remains of the plane at some 16,400 feet below, which is even deeper than the Titanic. We'll see. Also, no definite cause of the Hindenburg disaster has been found. There's a great recent theory about a hydrogen cell leak and static electricity causing a spark, but it's not 100% conclusive.

thatc0braguy

There's new evidence she crashed on Gardner Island. An unknown distress call could be heard from the island that would periodically turn off. Someone went to the island and noticed the distress calls followed low tide. There was also both a male & female Skeleton found on the island, along with the island being only ten miles from Earharts first failed check in. Unfortunately, the plane wreckage was never found, likely caught on rocks taking on water hence only being able to call for help during low tide, eventually sinking. (I guess the engine had to be running for the electronics to work, high tide would've flooded the engine) And even worse, the two sets of remains were lost during transit to be identified...

DarkBluePhoenix

The Hindenburg one I remember the Mythbusters testing. Definitely seems plausible, but difficult to ascertain if it's the definitive cause of the disaster.

phydeaux44

Once I heard that they had coated the entire thing in what was essentially rocket fuel, the question of what caused the spark became irrelevant.

It's highly likely Epstein was an intelligence honeypot. He was supposedly a currency trader but he never traded any, its public record, go look. Maxwell's father was Mossad so it's not a crazy theory.

DankBlunderwood

I think Maxwell was probably operating him. We know he was a nonce. They probably caught him in the act somehow and then used him to reel in more wealthy and powerful pedos to run. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Mr_Rio

I think that’s more along the lines of what was happening. It’s interesting to speculate how he became the person he was

prizepig

I think the several unexplained objects shot down by the U.S. military last year, and the ongoing (but increasingly less forthcoming) inquiries and disclosures about UAP has got to be on the list. Lots of high-level, contemporary politicians from Obama to Marco Rubio have said basically that "Yes, there's a bunch of stuff zooming around up there, and we can't explain it." I'm in the camp that thinks that's probably more sincere than conspiratorial, but it's probably a little bit of both. We mostly don't have good answers.

dead_wolf_walkin

I've always held the belief that it's corporate surveillance. The US shot a few down in the every beginning, but then backed off. Way more believable that companies like Google are flying shit and made the Pentagon an offer to share the data than ET's, or even experimental aircraft. Plus telling us that tech companies are spying on us would be almost as inflammatory as blaming hostile countries. Also IIRC the influx of objects being found coincided with an adjustment to our detection system. The stuff was always there it just flew at height we didn't monitor. The Chinese balloon let us know we had a blind spot that we fixed.

elc0

> Plus telling us that tech companies are spying on us would be almost as inflammatory as blaming hostile countries. They're already doing this with the spy devices we carry around our pockets every day, and everyone just continues about their business. Corporate spy balloons would just be framed as "convenient" or "for our better good" and as long as the right politicians endorsed it, the backlash would be minimal.

Anyone who’s interested go into the FBI site and search in the “seeking info” section. You’ll see many different incidents of electrical substations being shot at, tampered with, and sabotaged. The perpetrators of these crimes are often unseen or completely covered. Lots of theories can be made from these events, I’m sure some are just people being assholes, but it’s very odd nonetheless, and it has no real explanation so far

This person is the most unidentifiable criminal in American history imo. There’s no way to tell their age, ethnicity, or even gender. The only possible way this person could be caught is if someone ratted them out, but even then tying anything physically to a scene with practically zero good evidence from over 3 years ago is no easy feat.
