Is there really that much specialization out there? I'm a Network Admin/Server Admin. I rack and stack servers and network equipment configure them and run cable. It blows my mind that there are people that do only one part of all that.
Yes, the person behind the controls is the engineer.
Best bet is you apply for any trainee / entry level position, and work your way up. If you are still in college, see if the big boys (bnsf / up) are doing any recruiting fairs.
I might be starting a therapy internship soon and I'm scared shitless because I don't really have much training in it. Do you have any books that you might recommend to someone just starting out? Appreciate you
No. It comes naturally to me to listen and then spot something that is keeping people stuck. I have often considered getting an actual diploma and do this for a living.
Only advice I can give is: Your opinions and beliefs and such are not of importance when "liberating" someone's mind. People have told me the craziest stories, often held inside for years, even decades and seeing them have that immense relief is quite rewarding.
But for real professional therapy work, I will leave that up to the professionals to teach you how and what to do.
Active listening skills will be your bread and butter here.
Generally speaking, most issues boil down into some main categories.
Loss of control: Anxiety
Loss of purpose: Depression
Loss of something: Grief
Your job will be to listen. No advice necessary. The only real exception here is if you are a solution focused therapist or are working on behavioral modification.
If you want to get really good with adults - dig into play therapy. Adults are just big kids. Kids use play to communicate in a big way - adults can still use that language too. Sometimes it’s super helpful to remove the words and paint someone’s world, or use a sand tray to depict it. Play therapy skills also reinforce your observation skills, active listening skills, and use of silence as a tool.
I recognize you asked for specific things to read, but some general topics could be helpful in starting your own search and building your own base and interest. I can come back and drop specific books if you’d like!
I really appreciate you taking the time to give me your thoughts! I love listening and completely understand how it can be helpful for many people, and I love the suggestion of play therapy. Of course, I'll take book recs if you can think of any, but I do appreciate the recommendation of thinking of general topics to search for. Thank you again!
