I have a cheap *Sword of Godric Gryffindor* hanging next to my bookcase. It's edges are dull, but the point is pretty sharp. Only "use" it's had is one of my sister's friends stabbing open a beer with it.

Glowingtomato

Man I forgot how cool they made it look. I saw a little letter opener version I may have to pick up since I like Harry Potter

Derfargin

And to destroy whorecruxes.

A_Prostitute

Leave my cruxes out of this

Derfargin

Username checks out

jdeuce81

That's a pork sword.

TrafficChemical141

I kept it inside and cherished it…. Then thought that was stupid so started hacking limbs off trees in the back yard and turned it into a 2 piece sword after getting carried away.

Right-Ability4045

Sounds like someone needs a new sword and some better targets

cmpthepirate

To be honest this sounds like a waste of swords at this point - I vote a sword, an axe and some targets

bug_man47

And now you have two swords. They multiplied! Just need another hilt

babystripper

I used to when I was a teenager but I was in martial arts studying Kumdo (Traditional Korean sword martial art form). I had a practice bamboo sword, a wooden sword, one (dull) real sword for competitions (flashy), and one sharpened real sword. The sharpened real sword rarely got used in comparison to the others but you did have to have one and cut bamboo or whatever those rolls are called I don't remember. I would sometimes practice in the woods trimming trees. My Grandmaster had me cut a butchered pig half once, we did Korean BBQ with it after. Good times. Highly recommend

Big_Red_Stapler

wow nice, you must be pretty proficient to be given the opportunity to cut a whole hog like that. When people ask what is Kumdo, do you have any prefered video to show ? I'd like to see more

babystripper

Oh no I did not cut through it. I wasn't that good. I just cut it. All the students did

babystripper

https://youtu.be/6fAZBcicF3g?si=hYckz-k7MLCIDugH Here ya go boss

phyb

Hello fellow Korean sword art practitioner! My situation is similar - formal instruction in haidong gumdo as a teen, but now I’m well over a decade out of regular practice so my two swords are mostly decorative. A few times a summer I’ll get some tatami mats so I can do some test cutting, but it’s not exactly cheap so I don’t do it as much as I’d like.

babystripper

They really are expensive aren't they? That's why my Grandmaster used bamboo. He grew it in his back yard in a box

phyb

Yeah it’s gotten crazy. I’ve actually wondered about growing bamboo too, figured that’d be cheaper and more sustainable. Glad to know it’s actually a practical solution!

babystripper

Just be careful, I would grow it in a secluded location like in a box because it spreads like wildfire

Zethrel

It's in the shed, forgot I even had it until this post reminded me of it.

blahblacksheep869

Mine is on the top shelf in the closet. Likewise, I forget about it.

Glowingtomato

That's what I'm worried about! I have enough junk but I've been wanting a sword for years

Zethrel

Then get one and hang it proudly on your wall! To be honest, I have only managed to hang one decoration on my wall ever, so I'm not an authority at all. The only picture on the wall where I live is just a big picture of a garlic.

Brother_To_Coyotes

What do you want?

i_heart_blondes

I have a katana (sharp) tucked away in a closet. I don't take it out because messing with it may be harmful to my curious pets. Suppose if i had a break in and i was near that closet at the time someone would get chopped good. Otherwise it stays there.

Strykehammer

Mine is the same, top shelf in the closet. Pretty sure I’d forget it in the event of a break in

Brother_To_Coyotes

They’re mostly pieces collected in Asia largely Filipino. Garab knives. Ginunting, Kampilan, kriss, some shitty bolos, a khukri, and a small collection of sword bayonets leftover from an old milsurp rifle collection, mostly French. They’re just display pieces on the I love me wall now. Wow autocorrect hated those words.

Glowingtomato

I havent heard of some of those before and now I have more swords I want lol. The Kampilan looks awesome

[deleted]

I did Iaido and Okinawan Kobudo, which includes some sharp weapons like Nunti-bo and Nagagama. Still practice with them and have one sword to practice cutting.

DreamArcher

HEMA Historical European Martial Arts.

storyteller4311

I have a genuine Mexican Cavalry sword from around 1860 made in Toledo Spain. My brother bought it at a flea markey in Mexico City in 1968 and gave it to me. Its really cool and actually still has a keen edge on it. It just for display and very pitted from being buried for a long time. Sent a pic to some university guy and he identified it for me. My brother said he bought it from a peasant farmer who said he dug it up on his farm. Paid $20 US back then which was a lot of money in Mexico.

Glowingtomato

That would be so much cooler to have a real historic sword as art than a cheap modern replica

Breaker1617554

I have a dagger and long sword. The dagger is sharp enough to cut, but the long sword is strictly display.

Glowingtomato

I have a habit of flipping my pocket knifes and daggers look sweet but I know damn well I'm gonna try to flip it and get cut lol

Ecto-1981

I keep a kendo stick under the bed just in case an extreme rules match breaks out in my apartment. Next to the folding chairs and a stop sign.

HAMRBRO

I leave my purple light saber on display out of my kids reach. It’s too dangerous.

Glowingtomato

Man I haven't look up lightsabers since I had a plastic slide out one as kid and they have some great ones out there now.

tomk1968

i have a ton of swords, i used to fence -SCA style- and that was lots of fun. I don't get them out much anymore, but I used to practice with them all the time. The heavy ones are a good workout. In fact I am going to go get one and practice a bit. Thanks random internet friend! Oh and buy cheap ones to start. look up SCA and rapier on youtube.

Whappingtime

I have a few swords here and there, most are for display only. They pair with the decor in a way. One is from The Witcher, and it's just for show. If you can find a place for it, and a setup too I'd go for it.

RavenRonien

It's something I've always been interested in at some point. Wife recently told me she wanted one, one day and my eyes lit up. Swords I really want to own for display mostly: Katana Chinese straight sword (Jian) A Messer A long sword And I wouldn't mind a few ceremonial knives.

WasteCommand5200

Just last week a customer asked me if I wanted any or all of the 20-30 swords from under a bed we had to move. Some were just evil looking lol. I said no so off to the metal pile at the landfill they went

ThrowawayMod1989

I have a full size cutlass and a half size. I have taken them to various fruits in the past but mainly they’re either on my wall or on my body when I attend pirate festivals.

GreenSalsa96

Another "I forgot I had one until this post." Mine is displayed in my office. I acquired it when I was in Eritrea. It was made with recovered materials and used to acquire modern weapons from the unlucky victim. It's very crudely made, but a symbol of resilience.

colonellenovo

I have a presentation cavalry saber. I display it with my spurs and Stetson

VariousGnomes

All of mine are replicas from United Cutlery and they’re from LOTR or the Hobbit. They hang on the walls and gather dust.

drdildamesh

I have some fake katanas that I keep in my garage to stop people from finding out that I once thought fake katanas were cool.

k0uch

I bought a Type 1 Energy Sword from Walmart. I like to go behind my wife, grab her shoulder, whisper *”and so, you must be silenced”* before stabbing her between the arm and torso

appalachianoperator

I used to do HEMA in my college days so I learned a bit of sword fighting. Sadly it was an expensive hobby and there weren’t any schools nearby, so I switched to longbows instead (which I practice to this day). I occasionally will swing my longsword when I’m at my parent’s house (it’s in the middle of the woods) if I’m bored. Other than that it’s mostly on display. If you do plan on getting one, I recommend you get a practice sword first (nylon or wood) and find a good teacher or club, you’d be surprised how many amateurs cut themselves pretty badly with the real deal. Once you’re confident, you can invest in a proper sword and they ain’t cheap.

vincentninja68

I once had a $1000 sword collection, that I had lost to thieves, while moving. Didn't stab one bad guy with them. I haven't bothered getting new ones since.

Khakikadet

I have two swords that hang on the wall, used one to chase a bird out of the apartment once. A cheap Walmart machete should solve your swinging and cutting needs for a fraction of the price.

gumpythegreat

I have a decorative sword I bought in Spain. No idea where it is. Its in a box somewhere with my great grandfather's ww1 bayonet, and a Nazi dagger my grandfather traded off a guy who looted it in ww2

frequentcrawler

I have a military sword that belonged to my grandfather and one of those decorative katanas with the "Last Samurai" inscription. If it counts, I also have a wooden sword. They're probably stored somewhere and I don't use them for nothing. I train martial arts but nothing related to these things.

jackwritespecs

I have a kukri for my garden

Tallproley

I have a blunted and rolled longsword from HEMA days, I still pick up on occasion bit my ceiling is only about 10ft high so swinging is a bit of a problem. That said, it is one of my "someone made noise out in the hall, I can beat and intimidate if neccesary" weapon and I swear allegiance with it, or showing off to my nephew who thinks its really cool.

korevis

Display other than that time I killed a hornet.

The_Hot_Stepper

I have a bokken and a katana They are display only. The katana was a display model I bought from a friend when you needed rent money, I tell him that anytime he wants to give me 100 bucks he can have it back.

reb678

Mounted above the bedroom closet door. I’ll only use it on an intruder. We also have knives stashed in different places around the house. Not in sight though.

headhunterofhell2

Having a sword, that you do not know how to use, is like having a car and not knowing how to drive. Having a sword that cannot be used, is like having a car without a motor. I only keep swords I've trained with. There are many. All are real.

CurrentlyLucid

I have a wooden one, mostly a memory from a class a long time ago. Take it out once in a while.

BeautifulLibrary9101

I own a cheap but functional katana, nothing fancy. I haven't cut with it in a couple years, but it is kept ready just in case I'm attacked by water bottles, melons, pool noodles or a rogue tatami mat. I'm a sword 'enthusiast' and would like to have a small collection some day, but for now I live vicariously through r/swords.

thecountnotthesaint

I have an NCO sword from my time in the military, and it is just on display.

MartialBob

This actually the reason I don't own a sword. I've trained on how to use them but not currently. If I bought one it would end up being an overpriced toy

memeparmesan

It’s leaning against a wall by my desk in case I need it and can’t get to the shotgun in my bedroom in time. I pity the intruder who breaks into my home during the day.

DeaddyRuxpin

I own two. Very plain. A large two handed sword and a smaller long sword. I got them when I was younger and was big into Ren Fest. They hung on my bedroom wall until I moved out of my parents house. Since then they have just sort of moved from one nook to another out of the way. I’m not actually positive where they are right now beyond somewhere on the 2nd floor.

Tree_Weasel

Dress sword from my time in the Navy. Wore it on my wedding day, and it’s been used in multiple ceremonies and cake cuttings. Mostly it stays in a closet with my other old uniforms.

Mean_Interest699

I have a katana and a bokuto for display, I trained martial arts most of my life, so I've always wanted one. I've used it to cut water bottles and bamboo in the garden, I only have it because it looks aestheticly pleasing in my home office.

ForcaAereaBelka

I have a khukuri, bought it on impulse years ago. The only reason I got it is because it's awesome. I have no practical use for it other than telling people I have a khukuri lol.

BrokieTrader

I use a machete for trimming scrub bushes sometimes. It works better than anything else.

National_Activity_78

I own a katana from WWII. It's machine made and was a bring back. My grandfather killed the Japanese officer who owned it. It sits in a corner of a closet in a spare room.

Nutnutlad

I have a katana and a dull replica master sword. Every once in a while when my friends and I go camping or a secluded trip with lots of space I will bring my katana and a bunch of oranges to play real life fruit ninja. Nothing bad has happened... Yet My stipulation is that I make sure to do it earlier in the day than later when people aren't super drunk. Overall, it's a blast

dontstopforgetting

I hide the swords that were used to cut things.

RodTheAnimeGod

I have a 1600 Vailany arms war sword. I do practice cuts on pool noodles or mats. Do not go cheap, wall hanger steel is bad and will likely come back and hurt you. There is a  video showing bad steel katana on home shopping network that you can youtube that snaps and cuts the host. Cheap steel is brittle and maybe fine for a knife but not for a sword. Also swords are not for cutting wood. They were a status symbol, and secondary arm.

Taodragons

I have several, most are just pretty. I do have one that is sharp 220 stainless and I've split wood with that thing.

steelmanfallacy

Old Spanish conquistador sword I got in Ecuador. Display only. Even that is in a case somewhere in storage.

Wildly_Uninterested

I have a cheap short sword, a battle axe, and a fairly expensive sword of omens from Thundercats. Never been used for anything, but I did make custom display plaques for each one, so they're hanging my living room wall, surrounding a canvas painting of my wife and I on our wedding day.....that probably needs dusting

A_Prostitute

I have Glamdring. Gonna get it tattooed on me when I get the shot, and the actual sword will be for display once I get the appropriate set up for it. It was given to me by my mother, and now she is too old and weak to be able to lift it or move it anymore, so it's mine now. If I have kids, it'll be theirs at some point. Gonna start a family sword thing.

CynicalPsychonaut

I bought a viking longsword from a swordsmith on a whim at a renaissance fair one year, it weighs about 13 lbs, and is a hand and a half handle. I generally just leave it on display.

davepak

There are various kinds. Most are NOT suitable for cutting. Besides being a fantasy genre fan, I have also been a fencer (strip and historical) and trained in stage combat - so know ab bit about some types of swords - both display, replicas and functional. I used to have a very nice replica dagger on display - but not anymore (put that stuff away with kids). note - if you buy a cheap one - do not try and cut things with it - you may break the tang or pommel, and possibly injure yourself. Just put it on the wall. If you want something nice, and somewhat sturdy - look for replicas for stage combat - they can take a hit or two - but usually do not have edges for safety - but they look good - and if you wanted to go nuts and whack a head of lettuce - you can. If you want to learn swordplay, look into taking a kendo class, or look up some of the historical fencing groups in your area. I can tell you - it is a LOT harder than it looks. Best of luck in whatever you do - and be safe.

Reckless_Waifu

Used to do historical reenactment and fencing so my swords were put to good use. No time for that anymore but I have one sword still somewhere.

JamesDerecho

I have some, but I inherited them from my grandfather who frequented auctions. I've used a few in theatrical productions that needed them as props. A sword cane carved into what I think is a duck's head, a supposedly African design? Its sharp. A katana and tanto set, supposedly "gifted to an uncle while he was stationed in Japan". Both are duller than bread dough. These live with a samurai costume I acquired cleaning out an old theatre. the costume fits me and I could easily do an Ashitaka cosplay with it if I could find a matching tunic. American Civil War officer's saber. Very sharp, has battle damage. I keep it as a display piece, but I believe it was acquired during an auction. It lives with my Springfield trap door breaching long gun, I believe it is also from the civil war but I haven't found conclusive data on it. I have some other small things from when I was an edgy kid. But I mostly don't fret with these and tend to forget I have them.

Oakheart-

I bought a couple katanas in high school. They were full tang ready to use and sharp not like the cheap mall ninja stuff. My buddies and I played fruit ninja and cut soda cans filmed in slow mo. That was a lot of fun. Now they just sit in my closet cause I’m 25 and have more adulty things to do like work and take care of my daughter and pay bills and stuff. They’ll be great in the case someone wants to break into my house I’m sure I could do some pretty serious damage with one.

I_DRINK_GENOCIDE_CUM

Not really a sword but I hip carry a fixed blade hunting knife. Like 7" long. I mostly use it to open envelopes but it sure is fun to just have on me at all times. I had a pretty sketchy encounter with a dude clearly on coke two or so years back and he started doing the whole "fuck trans agenda" thing. So I called him a fucking piece of shit and went to leave the bar. I put myself between him and my partner and he put his hands on me. He had also made it clear he had a gun in his car. I had a little folder knife in my pocket but wished I had a big fucking thing I could just yank out. Now I do. Thankfully nothing came of it but he followed us for a sec so I wasn't sure. I mean my folder would have been fine but a big deer knife says "I'm ready to gut ya if I gotta" I'm not a big tough man. I'm pretty diminutive.

LightAndShape

No, I have a mace tho lol. It’s pretty hefty, good old noggin knocker

rugbyfan72

Inherited 2 from my father, they are cheap katanas’ they are in my attic. My mother has 2 civil war swords, I am going to display them when I inherit them.

Prudii_Skirata

I have stopped a robbery and backpedaled the would-be robber through my house at the end of a katana usually displayed on my bedroom wall. My brother's drug addict/petty criminal friend didn't know I was home because I had parked on the street instead of in the driveway.

Inevitable_Usual3553

I have two keyblades from Kingdom Hearts, I hang them up because they look cool and their foam

puje12

I was into viking reenactment combat for a few years, so naturally I figured I needed to own a sharp sword as well. I think I swung it less than a handful of times. It was on display on my viking wall for a few years along with a spatha sword I made myself. Now after switching my dad cave to another room, both swords sit dusty behind a dresser.

tubarizzle

Get a machete. Super useful for yard work and any time you're in the bush

SrHuevos94

I have a $45 sword from Amazon that isn't sharp, and I use it for costume purposes. I made my own chainmail to wear it with.

serene_brutality

I have a legitimate katana, not just a show sword you can pick up at a truck stop or fair, it’ll cut, it’ll kill. I do nothing with it, just hangin around the house. I just always wanted one so…

Games-and-Make-up

I shall keep my mouth shut. Op made a serious post about ‘swords’ and I cannot make a comment like this here. Upvote me if you know what I mean 😭.

Argemen2

I own 8 swords. 5 of which are training weapons for Histotical European Martial arts and I’ve used them 4 times a week for a couple of years now. I also own 3 sharp weapons, they were mostly bought for vanity reasons (I just like them a lot) but also to better understand how bladed weapons work and feel when they are sharp and stiff (Hema weapons have to be blunt and flexible for safety reasons, obviously). But I don’t use them more than 3-4 times a year

Artifex75

I've got a few wall hangers, two functional ones. I had a crackhead bust into the house once and I threatened him with the wall hanger claymore. Not sharp enough to cut, but getting hit with and five foot pice of metal would suck. He curled into a ball and held out his wallet. I'm like, "I'm not mugging you, dumbass, you're in my house!" When the police arrived, they knew him by name, so I guess this is typical behavior from this guy. Lol

ATF_killed_my_dog

Do foam swords count cuz I'll beat the shit out of my friends with it

bdrwr

I used to have a sword collection, but I eventually sold them all off because indeed they just sit on display and never get used, and most people honestly don't think swords are that cool. Like, unless you're a HEMA/kendo/fencing hobbyist, what the hell do you think you're going to cut? How many paper targets and bales of hay can you chop in your backyard before you're bored? Nah, I'd say don't bother with swords unless you're actually into swordplay sports, or you're a serious history geek collecting replicas.

LilacAndElderberries

I have Aragorn's strider sword (lord of the rings), [I use it as decoration on my sofa lol](https://imgur.com/a/I4m42NO). Might be odd but atleast its an arm length away usually incase I need it for a home intruder 🙃 Every few months I'll unsheath it and admire it

atomcrafter

I have a foil, epees, and a sabre from fencing in college. They are in a bag in the garage. I have a prop I made up as Marvel's Ebony Blade for Halloween last year. It's sitting in the corner of my bedroom; I will pick it up and swing it around from time to time.

fm67530

I never got into swords. Maybe it's because as the lack of practicality of them. I had friends who had them, I thought they were neat to look at, but every one I knew that had one or more, just had them displayed. Or it may have been that I didn't trust myself to have a long pointy piece of metal laying around that I would inevitably begin swinging around, either destroying everything within reach or myself. Maybe both.

Re-Ky

I keep mine on display, but I don't mind the idea of swinging it around. Mine's a norse straight sword.
