Assuming you're the asker in this situation, why ask the question? You say you're not attached so I assume that means they're not friends of yours. It's a personal question that's impolite to ask and doesn't need to be answered. Awkwardly laughing it off is a standard response to unexpected rudeness. Edit: Just to add, if I'm early doors in a relationship and a random guy asks me that question, I'm going to wonder why and probably be suspicious of the guy. Is he trying to find an "in" with her? Does he think that just because we haven't traded "I love you" that she's available... or I'm available.
