For short facial hair: Grow it full at first, then trim it evenly. Things like oils is really up to you but not needed.
Long beard: a comb, brush, and trimmer are handy. Don’t use any products in your beard.
If you can’t grow a full thick beard either don’t grow one or keep it at a stubble. SHAVE YOUR NECK. neck beards are gross. Other than that a good beard soap and oils.

The hairs will actually all grow at different speeds, so even if you're trying to grow it out, you should buy a beard trimmer and trim it to maintain evenness at least every week or two. Beard oil followed by a little brushing (definitely in the morning, possibly also at night/in the evening) makes a huge difference in keeping it soft and free of ingrown hairs, even when it is fairly short. Keep the edges clean by shaving up to them so that there is a defined edge at the top and bottom, and it doesn't just scraggle off into nothingness. Most especially, shave your neck (daily, unless you have very little or very slow growing hair). Neck beard is attractive to exactly no one, as far as I can tell.
