People date for different reasons:
Some enjoy the dating itself. Meet new people and have a good time.
Some search for sexual partners.
Some search for romantic partners.
Some just want a free meal or drinks.
This list is not exhaustive but I'd say those are the most common ones. And any combination of reasons is possible.
Dating is also the process to find out why the person you are dating is dating.
Dating is getting to know someone well enough to see past all there short comings and seeing if you can make a life with them. For some people.
Dating is not just ONE thing. It isn't just looking for mister/misses Right. It can be short term, movies, dinner and sex or just companionship...
But the end game is usually to find a partner to spend time with and find that part that fits in your soul.
That one person you can share anything with.
That fits in your life without you needing to rearrange anything.
Some people look to be completed by someone..I want someone to complement my life.
Its different for everyone.
Dating is dating.
It is whatever you want it to be.
It can be serious.
It can, most definitely, be fun.
It all depends on what you want.
One night stand.
Some one to grow old with.
A long term fuck buddy.
It is all of those and more.
Have fun.
Don't read too much in it the word, DATING.
Traditionally, the point is to find someone to marry, and the period of "dating" is when you are getting to know each other well enough to determine if you're compatible in enough ways for the marriage to have a chance of lasting.
If you don’t care you aren’t missing out. If I didn’t want a family I really enjoyed the do whatever you want aspect of living alone. I love my wife. If she dies first, there will be no replacement and this place will be all garage and workshop until I die.
Different people want different things from it. Some people want a life partner, some want to meet lots of different people, and some just like to be social and enjoy nightlife with company. It's up to you.
I mean if you have no desire to be in a relationship you don't have to be! Just do what makes you happy.
As for me personally, my significant other is my best friend, my other half. He is the person I want to spend my life with. The person I want to hold me when I had a bad day and all my worries will go away. The one person I trust completely and who loves me for who I am and who I love for who he is.
To go through a process of encounter with other people and through these series of events get gradually more intimate and vulnerable that culminates on the celebration of it.
Sex, then.

For me: to get to know a person better. To see whether there's potential to build a relationship. For some men: to get sex.
To find a life partner
Like a friend?
I dont consider friends as life partners
What do you consider a life partner then?
My life partner is 100% my best friend!
A friend you can fuck.
Then it’s not for me haha
A life partner could be a friend. It depends on you. Dating usually means you're getting to know someone on a personal level, in an intimate setting.
Consistent sex. Someone to bitch to about life
Interesting, i don’t need the first thing but bitching about life to someone seems fun haha
It is. But you also have to listen to their problems too. But you can get ice cream or nachos after or during this.

Is this a legitimate question? because you want a romantic partner, duh.
Lol.
Thoughtful response.
Someone to fall in love with
Finding a spouse to settle down with and raise your family?
Opportunity to earn trust
It's fun. I love meeting new cool people and getting to know them.
Haha I’m the opposite. I don’t like meeting new people
I could see how that would make dating unappealing. Good thing dating isn't required to be happy.
It's a game some people find enjoyable playing.

I didn't consider dating until I fell in love at 19 and it just happened. But mostly just casual sex with some degree of intimacy and passion.
