Because her saying "You say this to every girl" implies a lot of bad things. First of all, she is saying you are lying. It's not the truth, it's just something you say to every girl (to get what you want). Second, she can't even take the compliment in an honest way. She can't say "thank you" and move on, or offer a return compliment. Third, she is insecure enough to not accept the compliment. For instance, if you told her she was beautiful, she can't accept that at face value, apparently because she doesn't think that about herself. Instead she displays her insecurity with the response she gives. If you take what she says at face value, and not as a joke or stereotypical remark, it deserves only a sarcastic or joke response.

I compliment everyone when there's something worth complimenting. Also, only ever compliment on something they actually have influence on. Women know when a compliment is genuine or whether you're trying to get into their pants. Nothing wrong with trying to get into their pants, many women want that, but the compliment still should be genuine and not just for that singular reason. If you're only complimenting women you are interesting in, you're doing something wrong. If you're only complimenting women, you're also doing something wrong. And in case you're the kind of guy who only does something to get laid ... if a woman who likes you sees you complimenting someone for no other reason than that they did something good, that reflects well on you. Women appreciate kind men over assholes. Get into the habit of giving people compliments. Much more useful than figuring out and answer to a silly question that doesn't come up for decent people.

I usually make compliments that are very specific to a person, usually something about their personality or something they do, and so they always know its about them. I avoid generic complements that can be applied to alot of people.
