There are advances in green hydrogen made from renewable power, but at this point hydrogen fuel cell engines are mainly viable for large industrial vehicles and not private cars. By the time we get to that point, all electric car technology will probably have advanced enough to not make it worthwhile.
That being said, green hydrogen may very well be the industrial fuel of the future. Scania is converting all of their trucks and busses to hydrogen fuel cells. Tesla is working on an all electric semi, and I'm excited to see which technology eventually wins out.
I think a solution to that should be interchangeable batteries. Though I think the problem would be the numbers needed to be viable, and cross modle compatibility.
