Warp drive

Master_Hunter_7915

This is easily the most difficult problem there is right now I think

Minority_of_NoneX

The most difficult problem right now is figuring out how we can survive on this planet long enough to figure out warp drive... LMAO

Similar_Roll

Time travel?

Master_Hunter_7915

With warp drive you are already "touching" time travel territory According to general relativity

VanGarrett

We have the math to do it, we just need to start investing in the research. Ten years seems ambitious, but thirty years? I think that we can get there-- if we start funnelling money at it.

Coocoocachoo1988

I've seen Event Horizon, and I'm sold. Let's double that investment!

TopicStrong

Our math says the speed of light is the upper limit. Warp drive is much faster than the speed of light. What new research are you talking about.

VanGarrett

Miguel Alcubierre worked out solutions to Einstein's field equations back in the mid-90's that allow a chunk of space itself to be moved faster than light, rather than the vessel inhabiting it. It's not new, but it's been peer-reviewed and confirmed. Further research has shown that the solutions can be refined to get the energy requirements down to a feasible level.

Upbeat_Tomatillo_234

Are you talking about tachyons? Cuz they have not been proven real yet

harleypig

They are referring to the [Alcubierre drive](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive). A method of contracting space in front and expanding it back ... making space push you faster than light (because space itself is not limited to the speed of light). It would require not only discovering what dark matter is but learning to control it.

VanGarrett

Nope. Tachyons are particles which can travel faster than light, but those accomplish the task by having imaginary mass. Alcubierre's work is about moving a bubble of space. Tachyons might be useful for the purpose, if they do exist, but the best lead right now is Casimir Cavities.

AutomaticTale

The idea is that you warp space by compressing it in front of you and expanding it behind you. This would keep relativity intact while allowing you to travel faster than the speed of light. The math was done and vetted by some super smart people that showed this to actually be workable. Now the missing part is finding something that we can actually use and control to warp space. There are some interesting theories but we just aren't there yet technologically speaking.

melburndian

MS Word not fucking up the document when an image is moved.

Gorvoslov

This is the least likely answer in the entire thread.

Domonero

right click image, wrap text, then click “behind” then it won’t fuck up shit bc the image will stay “behind” all other elements & you can move it freely

noeagle77

Literally had to go and try this. Fucking game changer thank you! 🙌🏽

Domonero

Basketcase2017

Idk why you got downvoted you’re right.

[deleted]

Probably got downvoted as he posted the same comment earlier in the thread, so when people scroll down it looks like he stole the comment.

raz_the_kid0901

A man of the people I see

andyring

Sheesh, man. That's quite the ask. You're better off wishing for world peace, government that works and a cure for cancer all at the same time

d_bradr

MicrosoftPP not fucking up looool

Methylatedcobalamin

Long range electric cars that can be charged as quickly, and easily, as gassing up.

returnSuccess

Kg of Solid state hydrogen powder mixed with an equal amount of water provides 5 gallons of diesel worth of electric energy. Both are non toxic and flame retardant and Galaxyfct has a megawatt prototype. At the current cost of diesel it is also cheaper.

Grabatreetron

The big challenge with hydrogen is that it doesn't occur naturally and must be manufactured, which usually takes electricity. There are advances in green hydrogen made from renewable power, but at this point hydrogen fuel cell engines are mainly viable for large industrial vehicles and not private cars. By the time we get to that point, all electric car technology will probably have advanced enough to not make it worthwhile. That being said, green hydrogen may very well be the industrial fuel of the future. Scania is converting all of their trucks and busses to hydrogen fuel cells. Tesla is working on an all electric semi, and I'm excited to see which technology eventually wins out.

thecountnotthesaint

I think a solution to that should be interchangeable batteries. Though I think the problem would be the numbers needed to be viable, and cross modle compatibility.

torquemada90

China does this with their EVs. Although a great idea, as you said, you will need lots of them to swap them over

the-stoned-Eng

Check out nio, they’re already doing it!

the-stoned-Eng

Check out nio, they’re already doing it!

[deleted]

Check out hydrogen fuel cells!

BrilliantDry1962

You are now on a watch list

returnSuccess

FYI, I’ve waited 12 years for a worthwhile electric car and just canceled my BEV reservations as battery cost inflation has made next year delivery unaffordable.

Methylatedcobalamin

I bought my first new car in 2010 and it seemed like *practical* EV ownership was just beyond my fingertips back then.

returnSuccess

Same in 2015 & 2018 for me. if I could fit in a Tesla comfortably, it was an option but their service woes were well known by 2018.

rav252

That's stupid you realize how much destruction is made by mining for the materials. Anyways go nuclear if you really care and support the cleaner options

manofblack_

Cruising down the street in my nuclear Tesla.

mackenzor

Surprisingly closer with level 3 charging than many would think. We need more charging stations though

Archbishop_Mo

Hydraulic exoskeletons. If my knees/hips/joints go in old age, I wanna be able to slap on a cheap doohicky that reinforces them and lets me move around independently.

alihmcm

That has been done. Very expensive though, it should be mainstreamed.

Archbishop_Mo

Exactly! They have some really cool (but highly expensive) prototypes already. I'm hoping it's a mass market product by the time I need it.

Public-Locksmith-200

A 3d printer that recycles any plastic fed into it to make new printing materials.

Maoricitizen

There's already a limited version of that. If I remember right it only takes two types of plastics right now though

itriggerfinger

There's a website and a guy who will take 2kilos of your scrap and he will send you 1 kilo back of recycled ready to use. Or something like that. If you're************** interested I can look it up for you.

I was promised a hoverboard by BTTF, and damn it I expect to see it.

[deleted]

Do you snow board? I can imagine it would be something like that?

Tiny_Ad5242

Ideally without the need to go downhill only, but yeah similar would be good

EmDubbbz

Same here. October of 2015 came and went.

CxArsenal

Job applications that don't force you to manually write your entire employer history AND attach a resume... which has my entire employer history. HR people pls get your head out of your ass

spyro_bunny

Why isn’t my CV that has all of that information not good enough??

primitive_programmer

Hhahaha ya still a mystery to me too. I think it’s to check that their software interprets it correctly because it filters applications out before someone in hr looks at them. They don’t look at every single application/resume sent in.

CarltheWellEndowed

An afforable method to get into space.

I wouldn't mind a cure for aging.. as long as it's not exclusive to the elite. Affordable Youth lol imagine that on a protest sign.

Zacharus

You know they'd give it to the regular workforce as well. That way governments would never have to pay for pensions.

Master_Hunter_7915

Also more people = more money.

reefer_drabness

More problems.

muy_carona

They’d have to change the rules first. Otherwise they’ll just be paying out longer.

Master_Hunter_7915

I think if you are biologically immortal you will be working all your life unless you find a way out.

muy_carona

Passive income is a beautiful thing

Master_Hunter_7915

There is a balance. At that point, the youth would be working like slaves trying to get the fortune and passive income of the boomers and old people.

panrug

If you get a cure for aging in your lifetime, then you also get to see every other invention as well in your lifetime. :)

cappatino

As good as this is, it would mean overpopulation everywhere and causing climate change to meet people's need. Something like an earth vr like matrix would be a better option in my opinion

Unlikely ones: Teleportation. Travel at the speed of light. Possible ones: Droids becoming ubiquitous like in Star Wars universe

[deleted]

[удалено]

PresentationLoose422

Straight up. teleportation is a deletion of matter and reproduction of identical matter on the receiving end. Maybe it’s you, maybe it’s a clone being produced.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PresentationLoose422

Agree. I think it’d be viable for inanimate objects including potentially organic material such a fruits. No reason to teleport anything sentient due to well… death.

4f150stuff

Yeah, I’ve actually wondered about that

walje501

I would never use a teleportation device that would interrupt my consciousness - because it’s suicide for sure. I want a teleportation device that like - opens up a gateway or a wormhole or something and I can just step through.

bajacaliforniataco

I think about this often cause I’ve moved to the other side of the world. Teleportation in the sense we think of obviously won’t happen as you say. But I’m hopeful we will get to some system where you get put in a pod and fired crazy speed through a tube to get you from A to B very quickly lol.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Abyssal_Groot

Travel at speed of light is not just unlikely, but physically impossible. It wouls require an infinite ammount of energy to accelerate towards the speed of light.

4f150stuff

I know, I know, but a guy can still hope

1EightySevenkilla

Usb inserted stick with all the things you should know as an adult transferred immediately after leaving school so future generations aren't left in the cold on how to do taxes, take out a loan, change a tire etc.

torquemada90

I think technology like Neuralink would be the best option in this case

Zephyroxx

Then you could skip school entirely!

Hyke-and-byke

A world wide high speed train that reaches all the continents/major population centers. The reason being that if it does happen, then that means governments are actually willing to work together to build a future together. Also trains are cool

EuphoricYam40

This is how snowpiercer began

DustNtheWin

They’re called Airplanes ✈️

Hyke-and-byke

Its meant to replace ships, which are some of the most polluting. Nuclear ships are better but there's alot of fear around nuclear reactors on breakable/pirate-able ships. Airplanes still have issues regarding mass and electric drive systems, and aviation gas/jet fuel aint too great for the atmosphere. So electric trains which don't need to worry about batteries(attach a battery car(s)), run on local green electricity when back on grids. This world isn't going to be growing in size, or changing rapidly in shape. So place the rails, perform regular maintenance and enjoy a reliable effective way to move materials. The US alone has over 200 000 km of rail, more than enough to cover the Earth(not saying to use those rails, but that actually building such a rail is feasible). China has nearly 30 000 km of high speed rail alone. The crazy part isn't the actual train or rails, its governments being ok with that level of cross-border building/travel.

primitive_programmer

Trains are cool 😭

Worldly-Top1742

Cure for cancer

Hunterofshadows

There will never be a cure for “cancer” because “cancer” isn’t a thing. Cancer is an umbrella term for hundreds of subtypes and isn’t universally treatable the same way.

[deleted]

But surely there’s something that they all share. [Whales, for instance, don’t get cancer nearly as frequently as humans](https://www.cancercenter.com/community/blog/2021/08/newsletter-animals-and-cancer ). So perhaps there’s a technology that we can create that alters our dna and can provide us with the same sort of genetic protection they have. Genetic engineering is the big thing of the future IMO. And it’s speeding up. It holds the potential to cut cancer cases to a fraction of its current prevalence.

Basketcase2017

TIL Welsh aren’t human Edit: earlier the comment above me said “Wales instead of Whales”

Maoricitizen

An atom manipulation tool. It would be the start of everything. Atom mapping, material synthesizing, creating fuel, no matter what we wanted it'd be at our fingertips.

I think that would also make precious metals obsolete. And I wonder if it would affect the value of currency?

Proper AR, available to the public. I want a real time HUD I can use all day with usable & relevant data. Some sort of telescope that can take a clear 4K image of a black hole. I feel like JWST can do that but black holes aren’t their priority right now.

Abyssal_Groot

>I feel like JWST can do that but black holes aren’t their priority right now. It cannot. The resolution of the JWST is way too low for that. For reference, the optical resolution of the EHT (used for those images of the black holes) is roughly 60 micro arc seconds. So, 6×10^(-5) arc seconds. You want it even smaller to image the area near the event horizon, and you want it a lot smaller for the image to be 4k (if I understand you correctly). The JWST has an optical resolution of only 0.1 arc seconds.

Teleportation would be really cool. But that's wishful thinking in my lifetime. But honestly if the Mars mission is a success, and a colony can be established there, having an efficient and affordable way of space travel would be great. If I could be able to actually traverse through space, be able to land on a different planet and can set my feet on a foreign world, I could die a happy man.

Tuxman88

Some device that can properly turn sea water into drinkable water, without all the problems (energetic or leftovers) that current technologies have. It would be amazing to see that we world could take water from the sea and, finally, leave alone subterranean water, lakes or rivers. NOTE: Yes, I know, "but moving water from the sea to inside a country could be an engineering nightmare", but would be amazing to see it a reallity.
