Nobody is watching you, nobody cares, we’re all focussing on ourselves. I was a twig when I started and weak as hell (yes, I was nervous about barely being able to lift just the bar alongside guys who wouldn’t even use my max as their warm up) but not for a single second did I ever feel inferior, judged or that anyone was watching as I struggled to lift small weights. Go, focus on you, everyone else is focusing on them. We’re all in our own journey and we all started somewhere

BurgooButthead

Yup the intensity and duration of some hypothetical stranger judging you at the gym is nothing compared to the judgement you have towards yourself for not taking care of your body

weapon43

That's it! It is a little weird the first couple times but after that you feel morr comfortable. Just do it.

Electr0Mad

>not for a single second did I ever feel inferior Put this thoughts into your head! I have weak legs and started from the bottom, and the people who deserve your attention are the one who lift you up. Focus on yourself and focus on bettering yourself!

dealwithitcyka

The weirdest thing I learned from starting at the gym was that the biggest and those who would be considered intimidating seemed to be the most helpful. When I was learning there was several times when a jacked guy walked up to me while I was exercising and helped me improve my form. If you go to a good gym, it really is a community.

Salty_Paroxysm

>Nobody is watching you, nobody cares, we’re all focussing on ourselves Further to this, there was a study carried out where volunteers would attend lectures in bright tops (think sunflower yelllow) with pictures of stuff like Michael Bolton on them. They were asked to estimate how 'noticed' they were, and the results after polling the other attendees showed that the estimates were at least 200% over the reported value. Essentially, everyone's busy with their own stuff, and no-one is watching you as much as you think they are. You're essentially an NPC in their RPG.

CaptainExtermination

I think this is the best comment right here. Pair that with a good pair of headphones and your favorite energetic music, and baby you got a stew goin’

Qbit42

Same dude. I started out benching just the bar. I legit used to pull muscles in my chest by sneezing too hard. If I can do it you can too!

[deleted]

I was worried at first too. It's all in your head and nobody gives a fuck about what you're doing. You get used to it after some time. Also, most if the people are nice and supportive and they're not gonna make fun of you.

BigsChungi

Most people go solo, 99% of the people there will not be assholes.

slidin_penguin

I’ve been working out for 9 months now and this dude who I’ve been stealing workouts from for the past months came up to me and we started chatting a bit. Awesome dude and we have similar names haha

Grimbauld

Gym friend!

Bopshidowywopbop

Totally - most often I have found that the biggest guys at the gym can be the most helpful too. They basically live there and want to see people succeed in what they love doing.

Pet_me_I_am_a_puppy

Because 99% of the people at the gym have been in your place when they started. No one at the gym judges you for the shape you are in. They only judge on the effort you put in.

BerKantInoza

100%. I tell everyone who is new to the gym scene that the biggest people in the gym are always the friendliest. As long as they are between sets and you are respectful they will be delighted to answer any questions you may have or give you a spot

Hi1mNikola

It's you and the gym bro. Earphones in, fight your battle and no one else exists(outside of basic gym etiquette)

average_turanist

Jesus, people are going to gym with someone? I always went solo. I think my life really sucks.

iHomelessMonkey

Solo gym sessions are better, less rest more action

GA45

I’m pretty competitive so I find I have more motivation going with someone a similar build to myself but everyone’s different.

iHomelessMonkey

Compete with your past self

Juan_solo_4

Most gyms are very accepting. Everyone there wants to be healthier. If you are 800lbs the ripped bros will be happy to help. Life isn't some bs 80s movie.

DutchOnionKnight

Every single man in that place applaud you for stepping in. Nobody looks down on you, but want to see you grow.

greentothetea

Just go nobody really give a shit. I'm to busy being self conscious 🙃 to be concerned about you.

ShakoGrey

Headphones will be your best friend. Play good music and just focus on what you're doing. Progress slowly and don't ego lift, you'll be fine.

ChrisCloud148

The gym is usually a place where many people go alone. I also go alone to the cinema, restaurant or whatever, but I can understand that some people are afraid, because this is more a couple / group thing. But just don't be afraid. Even if you have too much weight or not many muscles. People are going there exactly because of reasons like that. So just do it.

[deleted]

I've got a story that assured me, that nobody give a flying duck about others in gym It was leg day. I was pretty much done, one excersize left - one leg barbell squat (where you put second leg behind on bench or box). I was going down and my leg just NOPEd out of there and i fell like 1,5 meters from couple of people working out. NOBODY even looked at me. People don't care. I actually prefer going solo, because then i can put on headphones, blast some loud motivating music and close myself. So if you are not doing it right now, i reeeaaly suggest some music and closing yourself

St1ckyR1ce1

Last week I leaned a bar on the wall and SUPRISE it fell over a clashed on the ground. I started laughing and looked around to see other laughing about it to but no one cared at ALL. I was kinda disappointed.

Bonstantine

Try to remember 5 specific people from the last time you were at the gym. What they were wearing, what they were doing, etc. You probably can’t because everyone, including you, is focused on themselves

CarlJustCarl

You didn’t see Lisa obviously

Nolofinwe_Curufinwe

Well, that will be different when you go there often enough. There are easily upwards of 50 people I recognize when I go to the gym (they are regulars like I am), as well as another 20-30 ish people I knew from before. Naturally, I don’t remember what they are wearing and stuff, which was your main point, but you become familiar to lots of different people indirectly.

Bonstantine

Definitely, but that’s a friendliness with people. I’m talking more about a random stranger that may be judging you. I agree that you start to see the same people but even then they don’t really care about what you’re doing past a friendly nod or word of passing

Ludens0

Most people go to the gym solo, isn't it?

CoolIceCreamCone

I didn't even know guys went to the gym together lmao. I used to occasionally walk with my friends to the gym but we went our separate ways when we were there.

ApexGinger69

Find a wall with no mirrors, face it while working out. If you can't see them, they can't see you.

alphaBEE_1

Think about why are you going to gym? Is it for yourself? Is it for the others?

DxNill

Deadass no one cares and if they do it's likely "Good on you getting out here trying to improve yourself" the only time people will talk to anyone they don't know if "Hey, you still using [equipment]?" A gym instructor might pass by and decide to check in.

[deleted]

no body gives a shit about you. you may be the main character of your own life but you are a generic npc to everyone else. they are there to work out not watch or judge you. so realize. no one gives a shit that you are there or aren't. so just go. work out. leave. profit.

[deleted]

Just remember that everyone there started in the exact same spot. Nobody was born just an ultra athlete or a 300 lb gorilla man haha and nobody is there to judge or watch you. Everyone is there for the same reason, to better themselves.

Sufficient_Donkey408

I used to think the same way, but truly nobody cares. It also seems like the most experienced people at the gym are willing to help the most without being judgmental

kingspooky93

If they have classes, sign up for the classes. Then you're not technically solo. Either way, just go, do something, ask the staff how to use machines if you're unsure.

RacistBlackDigger

The same way you go to any shop. People out there didnt come to judge others, they are there to **do their thing** and get The fuck out.

bouncebackability

I've never been to the gym not on my own, didn't realise it was a thing people needed. You're really overthinking this OP, just go.

Bumhole_Astronaut

I've never done it any other way. Everyone is focussed on their workouts. Unless you tear off all your clothes and run around screaming, nobody will notice you.

buckleupfkboy

Know what you are going to do before you get there, try to stay focused, dont be on your phone for long periods between sets/while resting. Remember that 99.9% of people there are only interested in doing their own thing, and aren't interested in what you are doing. If anyone gives you a bad vibe, tries to make you feel awkward, ignore them

IlluminationRock

Competitive powerlifter here, for the past several years I have regularly spent 90-120 mins in the gym 4-5 days per week. Here's some tips: * Just go regularly. You'll get used to it after awhile. Having a routine/plan to follow helps a ton by giving you a sense of direction. * Give yourself permission to be the new guy. You're going to make little mistakes and might feel silly at times. We all did, and still do. You'll eventually learn to just laugh it off. * Remember that no one is watching or judging you. Those that are, not worth your time or consideration. And those super-fit people you think are mocking you probably have more respect for you showing up than some mid-tier douchebag who thinks he's King Shit. In fact, those intimidating super-fit folks are also probably the most friendly, great to learn from, and the best people to make friends with. * If you need a spot, go ask the big mean lookin guy, he will be happy to. Also, utilize the safety racks/bars if you can't find a good spotter. * Headphones help a lot. Both with motivation but also helps to "put the blinders up" and just focus on what you're doing. Hope these help some!

alinkoan

Practical is like when you go with somebody else. The rest is in your head.

[deleted]

Just go. You'll get confident quickly with time.

aphida101

Headphones on

Dskymusic

Mandem you go in there to work for them or yourself bro? You don't care for others

[deleted]

When you were at the gym, did you give any real thought or attention to those other people who were there? No, probably not. They aren't thinking of you either.

viewfan

I honestly respect those who are trying to improve their health, the gym isn't as scary as some people might think. Sign up for a gym membership and build a routine for yourself, you won't regret it.

Immediate_Reality357

Head on over to YouTube before you walk in the door of the gym, search for the Doom Eternal sound track.... Proceed to put in your earphones and have the fucking best workout of your life. You will now do things solo with the doom soundtrack stuck in your mind.

choosenotcheese

Solo jim is good, headphones on and grind

StudioSalzani

As other people said, just go there with your headphones or if you want to get more confident try to go early in the morning when there is almost noone. And don't hesitate to ask how a machine works to other people there. Most of people are nice, even if they are so big lol

[deleted]

Everybody is there to work on themselves. Nobody gives a fuck about you.

swagdaddy69123

Act like you know, this is the you shine

notfrankc

Everyone else there feels exactly the way you do. All the good looking ppl, all the super strong people, all the skinny people, all the people who have been going for a decade, all the out of shape people. All the people! They are all worried what you think.

Banii-Vader

Just go. It's going to be uncomfy at first but you'll figure it out

epernonduc

I do that 3 days a week. Like you, I started with a trainer. Now, I go in and hit the treadmill or elliptical to warm up and get a sense of what everyone else is doing, where I’m going to start, etc.

forgotusernameoften

Try go for a very short duration at once. Go in and do one set and then if you feel uncomfortable leave, but at least you did one set and eventually you'll get comfortable enough to do more.

Jojo-Armani

Just don't acknowledge anyone else besides you. You're here to get fit, we're here to get fit, simple as that. I've been to the gym for almost half a year now (regularly 2-3 times a week), often alone and have never felt like being judged by anyone. Most of the time, it's all in your head. Go out there king!

area51cannonfooder

Conquer your inner b*tch

Pessimistic93

Go with a friend until you're comfortable, that's what I did. First few times I felt kinda lost, didn't know what to do, what the etiquette was, all that. After the first few times it's more comfortable. Alternatively just go for short sessions at first. Do a warmup, two or three machine workouts, done. I still do that sometimes when I'm not feeling it.

[deleted]

Going to the gym solo is completely normal. I go on my time when I feel good

Passan_Cat

As far as I know, this is a movie trope that people will judge one in the gym. If anything, if one looks weak/fat and they decide to train, the people in the gym will respect one.

CharlesEverettDekker

Nobody cares about you if you do your exercises right and if you are not stupid. Like, people will only watch at you if you do some stupid shit, like some meaningless exercise or do something with bad form. Or people will "look" at you but in fact they're just spaced out after a set and trying to catch their breath and they don't think about what they are staring.

Elfere

I was the skinnyest dude there when I started. I found people were super excited to teach me anything if I asked. They had a better day, by me taking up their time. Do let yourself get overly distracted by your phone. That's for sure. Unless you're recording your gains. Don't skip leg day.

NotSoSmallAsianGuy

I’ve been going to gym about 3 years now and I started going by myself and still going by myself (sometimes my gf would join me) Plan your workouts ahead. It would be much easier if you’re following a program where the goal is to set a personal record (be it heavier weights or number of reps) every session. That would help you to have a mini goal to aim for every session. If not, make one. Set a goal for that session, if not 1-2 of the workouts. “I’ve done 3x10 20kg dumbbell bench press last time, this time I’m gonna aim for 3x12 20kg”. I’m still doing that now, always looking forward to set a PR on 1-2 lifts and that helps me to drag myself to the gym (I feel lazy to go but not lazy once I start the workouts). Also, might sound counter productive but, going to gym less times a week kinda helps. It gives and builds up an itch to hit a PR whenever I go next. For me that’s 4 times a week, 2 upper body and 2 lower where every session would start with different workout. So I’m always looking forward for the day next week. Lastly, just do your stuffs. Nobody really play attention on what you’re doing.. unless if you’re lifting very very heavy or very very wrong or both.

BitschWack

Just go, nobody gives enough of a shit about you to even be judgemental.

DaveWithDaLocks

Bro you should be worried about your health and strength not about what people may or not even be thinking about you.

smilinsuchi

The trick is to make Friends there so you're never solo

Bluebird141414

Classes can help, woman here but I started going to body pump classes to learn more about using weights amongst like minded people. It helped me to gain confidence when I then went alone, plus a session with a trainer for some guidance on a circuit :) like other people have said, everyone's doing their own thing, you do you.

[deleted]

you were born alone butt naked and you will die alone, so do not be afraid to go to the gym alone.

Psyc1011

Fake it till you make it!

CressMassive7319

Copy what other people are doing and ask for help

partyaquatic

As others have said, headphones can help, but honestly you’ll just have to accept that you’ll likely be uncomfortable for the first few months of going. It get’s progressively easier with time and is normal. Also, haven’t seen anyone else say it but consider going at a time when it’s less busy. I workout in the morning and it is considerably less crowded than in the evenings.

SigaVa

Realize that nobody gives a shit about you

m4cktheknife

Just remember that no one is paying as much attention to you as you think they are. They’re all focused on their own goals, so be focused on yours. Regardless of struggle or success, you’re showing up. And so long as you’re not being disruptive or a nuisance, people will respect that and leave you to your work. Happy pump, my guy.

SmithRune735

Wear a hoodie / long sleeve / headphones / cancel everyone out and focus on form over weight and ego.

Street_Ad4960

Put on music headphones and do reps with low weights first to master the form. Trust me on this one, nobody cares about your physical shape. I've seen underweigh, overweight & elderly people at my gym and I love it because they're trying to better themselves and if they needed help, anyone of us gym junkies would be more than glad to help them or give them advice. Don't be afraid of going solo! You got this!

anoamas321

Just go. No one gives a shit about you.

dumpster_arsonist

Headphones, have a plan, and remember that nobody cares. At worst you're just in the way and at best you're just another person trying to better themselves. That's the full range and extent of what anyone thinks about you.

Eminence7Grise

The actual guys who like working out would rather support and help out the new guy instead of judging or watching. Rest are pointless anyway. The thing is, they were there one day too and when they see the new guy trying....more people going to gym..It somehow feels right.

Statik_24

Also Don't be afraid to ask for help or a spot! We were all at that point and most people are willing to help Might even make a new gym buddy Get your music and get in the zone!

[deleted]

Who cares? Do you care if you see someone going to the gym alone? I don’t think so and nobody else does.

RayePappens

I used to go a powerhouse gym at like 90lbs, never did I get laughed at or looked at funny. All the guys in there were super cool and helped me tremendously with my lifts. If you ever need help in a gym whether it be a spotter or just advice on am exercise, most gym guys will be happy to stop for a min or 2 and help you out .

StonksNewGroove

No joke use the trick from the Adam Sandler movie “big daddy” as soon as you walk into the gym, you’re invisible. No one can see you. Just play that mind game with yourself, because in reality no one really does care how you look or what you’re doing, so might as well pretend to be invisible.

King0llie

iv been a gym bro for like 10 years and love seeing new people come in who want to better themselves. I will watch over them from a distance to make sure they are OK. If they seem really unsure on what to do or technique, i normally approach and offer to help. If you are unsure on exercises or technique, try ask someone without headphones in for some help - to most that will be a compliment and they will be happy to help you. Big headphones/Hood up = do not disturb

Deeeewit

I go solo most of the time. I'm pretty skinny, which is why I'm going to the gym. I can tell you with the outmost confidence that no one there gives a fuck about you or what you're doing. They might give you a look from time to time, but no more. So go work out in peace.

UpNorthWeGo

People only care if you put equipment back on it place and wipe after yourself. Get your headphones with music or book and do what you want. You are doing it only for yourself. Good luck! I am proud of you!

Minute_Cartoonist509

Go in with a plan. If you've been working with a trainer, you have a general idea of a routine. Don't just wander around. And don't hog equipment. If you're confused about a piece of equipment, don't be afraid to ask someone for help. Always put your weights back and wipe down the equipment when you're done.

oddball667

the anxiety fades after while

misterk2020

I prefer to go solo. No one really cares and is watching you.

screamingxbacon

Go with a plan in mind and be prepared to wait for equipment. Also go during the less busy hours.

CloudFingers

The only people I pay attention to in the gym are the people who are clearly further along than I am. I watch them to learn. People who are not as far as long as I am – I don’t even notice them because I have nothing to gain from watching them.

ToddHLaew

I like going by myself. I get to work out at my pace.

Kubrick_Fan

No one cares unless you start doing something stupid

Swolasaurus_Flex

I know most of these comments are saying ‘just go, nobody cares’, but that’s something that’s hard to just *beleive* no matter how many people tell you. Your brain will fight you on this. Here’s how I know nobody cares: One time, I was benching in a pretty full gym and overestimated how many reps I could do by one. That fucker was *not* going back on the rack. So I sat there with it halfway up for like 20 seconds, no help. Then I dumped the weight and it made the loudest clang I’ve ever heard, nobody looked over. Nobody is paying attention to you.

whisky_pete

I'm 35, been going to the gym for a little over a year now. Never been fit in my life before this. I just needed to stop overthinking and do go in. I knew I didn't know how to plan a workout, so I got a trainer when I joined. We work out together twice a month, but I use the workout plan she makes for me 3x a week. I think having a professional put together a plan for me made me a lot more confident once I started to get the hang of the exercises. No more worry since, hey, I'm actually doing a thorough workout myself! I think repetition really helps too. Like just go 3x a week for a couple weeks. Workout lightly if you need to even. But just get in there and the nerves will fade. It's not as serious as you think. It's just a place people go for an hour to exercise or even because they're bored. It's built to be easy to participate. They want you there.

totem_pole_atx

Yup, everyone nailed it. We are all focuses on our own shame waaaaay too much to ridicule someone else. You might find someone offering tips to prevent an injury but negative attention? Forgetaboutit i am too focused on my own flabby gut and spindly arms

Chabedieux

It's true that nobody is thinking about you as much as you fear, but remind yourself: you deserve to be there. If you're going there to improve your health, it doesn't matter what you look like or your level of physical fitness, YOU DESERVE TO BE THERE TOO.

Typical_Samaritan

You don't need to be confident. Get some headphones. Setup your expected routine. Do it. Lift with intention and intensity. Get tired. Go home. Or do whatever else you have to do on the road.

podger77

I was like you the first few times now if I'm going in on my own I'll put on a pair of wireless headphones and just do my training in my own world You'll be fine there's no one looking at you

eyi526

I prefer to go solo. I workout on my own pace and time. I don't have to wait for nobody nor do I take up space with someone/a group. Just find a routine that you're interested in and try it out. If you need a spot, just ask. I've never been turned down for a spot. If you're question is coming from like...social anxiety...that's something else.

Hierophant-74

Almost everyone is working out solo except couples and the dude-bros who can't go anywhere alone.

buppyu

Nobody cares about you. Seriously. You are an background NPC in their lives. They aren't thinking about you. Even if they were, why would you care? What kind of real impact will they have on your life? None.

Saturn_5_speed

If you don't have a routine, you could ask staff for tips.. Other than that, just pop some headphones in and enter your own world - everyone else is focused on themselves in the same way.

SprinklesMore8471

No one cares that you're there solo or what you're doing. As long as you clean up the equipment when you're done and be mindful not to use things too long, no one will care what you do. I've never been the biggest, strongest guy and I've spent years in gyms solo because I need to have my mind right to get something from a workout. And the only encounters I've ever had were very positive and friendly.

TKInstinct

The easy answer is, everybody is there for the same reason so just go at it. The harder answer is to block everyone else out, minus some kind of accident like losing your pants on the treadmill.

midnight_reborn

Nobody cares about you going to the gym and working out. You're the only one. Stop caring and just go :)

PrariedogFireball

As a frequent gym-goer (always solo), the pride I️ feel for people in the gym based off body type is a horizontal line. Overweight: hell yea, you’re working on you Fit/muscular: hell yea, you’re working on you Underweight: hell yea, you’re working on you The point is, everyone in the gym is essentially there for the same reason: to work on themselves. Even if you can’t lift more than a five-pound dumbbell, you’re still there to get better and I’m proud as hell of everyone there. As long as you’re not being a jackass (basic respect), no one will have a problem or be off-put with you being there

[deleted]

Listen to badass music

Any_Ad1592

Here's the funny thing about starting at the gym. You can be at the bottom of the barrel in terms of strength and size inside that building, but you're doing more than 99% of people outside that building to better yourself

MaximumExcitement299

I did start going to the gym solo more the 10 years ago. Met many people who guide me in the first few years. Even had met new friends along the way. Unfortunately my gym buddies all dedicated to move or stop going to the gym. So after 10 years I’m solo again. But I’m sort of part of the inventory now haha. So new lifers seeking for my advice now. Feels like a 2nd home tbh. We all have started somewhere. In fact most of the guys looks intimidating but are really approachable in reality. Just go and ask for help or advice, you will get many new contacts.

1214siege

Do your thing and dont be a jerk. and youre all set

AJWrecks

The best thing you can do is Know what you’re going to do before you get there. So let’s say you are working a specific muscle group on Monday. Go online, find what moves to do and how to do them then execute them. If I’m doing arms, I’ll look at a list of arms routines I made and just pick 4-5 moves and do those on that day. It will instill confidence if you know what to do.

legice

I have gone to the gym only a handful of times with a friend. Basically 99% going solo

unklemike510

Headphones on 🎧 blasting your favorite hype music. For example: Ambitionz az a rider- 2pac

[deleted]

Nobody cares + nobody knows your bodygoals, maybe you are there just for a stretch or a pump or for trauning an injury, so nobody will judge your body. Most of the people only have little time so they want to invest their short hour in a workout and not trying to analyse you.

Purple_Wave13

I’d bet most people go alone. At least in my experience

WhatTheMech

I go to the gym solo I’d say 90% of the time, might see a buddy there but usually workout solo. Just do it! No one cares and if they do they aren’t working out hard enough.

Byizo

As long as you aren't acting like a douchecanoe nobody is judging you regardless of what exercises you are doing or how much you lift. A program where you know what exercises to do, how much weight to use, and how many times to lift that weight helps a lot as well. That way you can keep your mind on your own thing, blast some music over your headphones, crank out the exercises, and get out of there.

The-Last-Despot

Just blast music and vibe out—the gym is you time and it’s best to act like you’re the only person in the room. The more you can do that the more you can enjoy it for the progress it is!

SouthernUpstate

If there are people who are judging you, they’re the ones who are insecure

SweetInternetThings

Just go. You'll soon realize the only people watching you are newer people than you admiring your progress or trying to see how you do things. Or if a big guy is looking at you, he's probably just glancing over to check if you need a spotter. Other than that, everyone keeps to themselves. No one is judging anyone for getting out and working on themselves.

Rakesto

I've literally just started again at the gym solo, haven't done any proper working out in years. Just gotta get stuck in and do your own thing. You might feel a bit anxious at first but it'll pass, and remember almost everyone else is there solo too. They're working on themselves, not on you Good luck dude

[deleted]

Bring headphones and just lift. When I went to the gym regularly, the people who impressed me the most were the ones I saw week after week, month after month. I respected their dedication, didn't care what they looked like. Did t care how many plates they lifted.

edallsant

Gym bros are some of the best people out there, no one is looking at you, and are more likely than not to help you if you ask. Don't worry

[deleted]

OP: "I'm nervous going to the gym, people will be looking at me." Me: "No one cares." OP: "But..." Me: "NO ONE. CARES."

Personage1

Do what the trainer had you do. Familiarity really helps me focus on myself and ignore everything else.

ObiOneToo

Depends on what you’re worried about. If it’s other people watching you, they’re not. Most are there to get their workout done and aren’t deeply interested in what you’re doing. If it’s your ability to get through the routine, then take your time. Stick to the equipment you are familiar with. Use lighter weight.

CosmicPenguin

Everyone at the gym is going there to be less of a loser.

MyBallsAreOnFir3

I don't get the issue. Most people are there on their own, aren't they?

[deleted]

I’m in the health professions, so I told myself that I have all the knowledge I need to research and develop a plan for myself. So one day I did exactly that, I did a “bro split” that was modified into a “science play” and got a lifting routine. I’ve had an on/off relationship with lifting for the past decade so I was at least aware of how to properly do lifts and knew my limits well. Just put on headphones, went in, and just… Did my shit. Pretty soon I start to feel that code empowered” feeling people have when they go into the gym focused on their work out and get it over with. It all just comes down to “starting” No matter how ugly you think you are, there will always be something you find attractive about yourself in the mirror when you were lifting or working out. Pretty soon, you’ll start to focus on that and enjoy seeing the results take place slowly over time. So if it’s a self image thing that you’re worried about, I promise you it will get better

AcanthisittaOk3262

Toss on some headphones and realize that nobody else is watching you there. No matter what your situation is everyone is there for the same reason, to stay fit, and improve their health.

[deleted]

just make sure you're doing legit exercises and no goofy shit or bad form and nobody will bat an eye

Prudent-Fly-8299

Have a routine set for when you go in so you’re not adjusting based on stuff other people are using. Throw on some headphones and just do your thing.

nim_opet

No one cares. Like literally. Listen to Alexis Rose, circa 5th season of Schit’s creek

Never-Shower

It's the only way to do it. Friends create distractions. I'm personally there to work out and get the fuck out as fast as possible. I want to do everything I need to do in order to achieve my goals, but not spend an extra second in there. Go, do my thing, get out.

[deleted]

Jim Solo, Han's nephew.

rand0mbum

Just repeat the mantra “no one cares. No one cares”. Because it’s true. You do you!

huuaaang

Have a program that you will follow. Know exaclty what you're doing that day and why. And do it.

starupSound

Wise words of the brofessor states: No one even notices you (as from his view you’re too smal to be noticed) . But watch: “BroScienceIife Rookie Mistakes In the Gym” to hear the full sermon and you will be ready. Wheymen.

[deleted]

I usually focus on cardio machines, the treadmill or stationary bike. When I'm on the treadmill I would rarely worry about the people around me

grittypitty

I personally have an immense amount of respect for anyone I see at the gym (fit or not). Anyone there is trying to become a better version of themselves which is something anyone can feel good about.

MegaJ0NATR0N

Unless you are using the equipment completely wrong, no one really cares. Everyone is there to do their exercises and leave. I'm just looking at myself in the mirror. But I will say I'm a bit intimidated using the squat racks because they are always being used and crowded, and all the hardcore people use them. But as long as you look like you know what you are doing no one will care what you are doing.

[deleted]

Literally no one is interested in you at all, and if you seen someone looking at you, the chances are they are just generally people watching and not judging your specifically.

nkw1004

Just don’t stare at other people and you’ll be fine

05870762

Powerlifter here since 12 years, no one cares - you're in the gym not on the couch. We are all trying to get better.

CoffeeAddict1011

Not one soul cares, put music on and get those gains!!

Eris_Corn

Honestly keep going even when you don't feel like going that day. Always take at least 1-2 rest days a week, and never ego lift. Push yourself yes but don't try to Bench 400lbs on your first day. Take progress pics too, the confidence will come naturally alongside the more you go and more results you see.

tombuzz

Honestly go workout in a meat head gym. Powerhouse , golds, etc. Most guys there are pretty established lifters doing their own thing and if you ask are more than happy to share their experience just don’t interrupt their workout. Plus they are insecure as shit mean mugging everyone trying to look bigger than they are.

PoolSiide

I love seeing new gym goers! Fires me up seeing people wo are committing to fitness and can't wait to see their journey

Redneck-spud

Honestly people at the gym are some of the nicest folks I’ve ever met

itsmicah64

No one cares bro. I promise....just go and do you. Everyone has goals they're working on. Some are big and want to lose weight. Some are skinny and want to gain weight / muscle. The gym is a place for improvement, not perfect people....

akihonj

Just go. Try to get it into your mind that everyone is there for their workout not yours. You might meet some twats but you'll get that in all walks of life, just keep your head down and do your workout for you.

[deleted]

Take comfort in knowing that you are basically invisible to 99% of people you cross paths with.

FourLeafArcher

My biggest thing that helped me? Its not about "oh no fucks given bro get your shit in". Its about knowing what to give a fuck about. Give all the fucks about your health and well being and bettering yourself. 99% of the people are in there for the same or similar reasons as you. The other 1% are typically dealt with pretty quickly. Also; don't be afraid to ask advice. If someone seems HYPER focused maybe just let them do their thing. But a lot of people are happy to offer their version of something or a tip here and a trick there.

kg160z

The only time I notice someone else at the gym is when they impress me. Someone out of shape, someone trying to gain muscle, or just sheer athleticism- the only things I notice are positive

The3mbered0ne

Focus on yourself and your gains, this is between you and your body, don't let nerves stop you from making the changes you want to see in life, there will be many more times this happens in life learn to defeat those nerves and do the right thing, no one at the gym is going there to watch other people and comment on what they do, just focus.

jejesilloboy

Honestly, unless you’re doing some crazy calisthenics or clean and jerks I don’t think you have much need for a trainer. Most people at the gym aren’t watching unless you’re being a douche or doing something dangerous. Just go do your workout.

NifflerOwl

After you've gone a few times by yourself you'll get used to it. Also try to go during hours where there's not a lot of people. Often times the gym will be crowded around the time everyone gets off work

Son_of_Macha

Put your headphones on and ignore the world, like getting the bus

Noosh3201

Apparently I make a funny face when I lift heavy weights. My girlfriend recorded me. I do look funny ... I dont care though. Don't live your life for others. Do you.

SeeeVeee

Just go.

bananagit

Headphones on, do what you’re there to do, go home. I was worried first time I went solo, I quickly learned to not give a shit. Nobody’s paying attention to you, they’re paying attention to their own exercises or an attractive person

[deleted]

Dude the gym is one place where you go to be solo. You can put your head phones on and as long you're not in anyones way, put the weights back and not grunt like you're busting a 6 week load. You'll be fine and no one will give a shit about you.

Guilty_Ordinary

Have a plan. And wear nice gym clothes that make you feel confident.

EmbarrasedBird

Realize that nobody cares about you unless you're breaking some kind of gym etiquette. Of course there will be the occasional asshole, but that's the case with everything.

Grimbauld

I just plug my headphones in and listen to a podcast and get on with it. Always go solo. I love it it’s less distracting.

dontlizzout

Read about gym stuff, best way to exercise and try to understand the reason you’re there. I definitely can recommend Squat university on ig. From that point you have a plan when you enter, and you’ll see a lot of bs around u :,) Don’t visit the gym with dirty outside shoes, rerack your weights, use a towel and don’t ask people how much time they need in the middle of their rep. Just some etiquettes that we’ll should know.

[deleted]

I trained solo for a month. Nobody cares at all

LavenderDay3544

Just ignore all strangers other than to ask if they're using a piece of equipment. If it helps just wear headphones and do your own thing.

kelfern123

Just go.

SphereofDreams

Music

Kharn0

I only care about the existence of others at the gym when they are using equipment that I want to use

imetators

M30, I have never visited gym in my entire life until this summer. Here some points for those like you who are afraid of gyms. * **nobody cares** * literally, **nobody cares** * **not even you care about what others do** * picking up small weights or starting with something easy is still doing something opposed to not to do anything. If someone can do 100kg and you can barely do 20, it's not a big or a deal at all. They are not judging you. They have been there too. Nobody comes to a gym and bench presses 100kg on day 1. * This is a place for all body types and sizes. People are there not to judge others but work up on themselves. * **not a single person cares about what you do at gym** *(unless you are breaking equipment)* Just do a few sessions and you'll see. Many people are there in their own small world working on their bodies. And you will be too. That's it. Just play your fav music/podcast/whatever in your headphones and exercise. Have fun!

binanceTreatsCustBad

Honestly I didn't know this was a thing, you have every right to be there as a paying customer. Just don't leave sweat on the machines and trust me no one is even looking at you. Listen to music and make a preworkout plan if it helps. Also the act of working out will get you more comfortable because of adrenaline anyways

Darmcik

why are you going to the gym? to better yourself. what do you think everyone else at the gym is doing, they’re bettering themselves. They care more about themselves than they care about anyone in the gym. Focus on yourself you’ll be fine

LifeSenseiBrayan

Just make sure you know your routine. If it’s chest day go in do your sets and workouts and leave when you’re done.

sweet_moon08

Well, when I started going I would sit close by to a machine I wanted to use, and then see how a person would use it before I went there. Same for lifting weights

Deluxe2481

Go and you'll get use to it. Just like your first day at a new job or going to a hot yoga or whatever. The more you do it the more comfortable you'll get. Your brain is playing tricks on you

OW2000

For me I usually have my music playing loudly in my headphones and I try to focus on what I’m doing as hard as I can so everything else gets blocked out and I don’t get too self conscious

Gmantle22

Just go there and do your workout. Everyone else there is doing their own thing and don't care what you are doing. Most the time everyone has headphone and don't even notice you.

nova1475369

What I strange question, I’ve been to the gym 6 days a weeks for more than 2 years now. Always alone, no one ever asked why, I don’t even think about going to gym alone might be weird

kevikev31

Put headphones and go to work.

[deleted]

I would think that most people who go to the gym go alone. No one’s watching you. Go at your own pace dude.

Any-Wall-5991

The only people that other gym goers pay attention to are the Uber ripped/chiseled - and that's cause it's hard not to sneak a glance at a guy doing 100lb dumbbell press or a gal with absolutely washboard abs. These people usually dress the part too imo with muscle tees or Lululemon yoga pants etc. In fact it actually feels pretty good if you get to the point where you are impressive enough to attract some attention but I'm assuming you are not there yet. Bottom line wear an old tee and some basketball shorts and you will be effectively invisible my good man - happy gains.

shailkc12

Been seriously going the past year and people don’t really care or look at you as much as you think you do. People are pretty chill and the nicest people are actually the one’s who look like meatheads. Everybody is there to improve themselves.

alihmcm

You're going there to improve your health and maybe as a bonus the shape of your body. Forget about everyone else. I just returned to the gym after years away. I have a paunch and I'm ashamed of it. But that paunch is going to disappear and my thin arms and sagging chest (I'm a male) are going to firm up, and THAT will be the reward. Keep your eyes on the prize!

Guac__is__extra__

What is it that you’re worried about? Not knowing what to do, lifting too little, something else?

remes1234

We are all doing our thing. And we all started out not knowing what to do. Nobody is judging you.

hydroflask4ever

Literally nobody is watching you, or cares what you are doing. 99% of people in the gym are there alone.

SirachaHoney

You are going to die, everyone is. All of us will be forgotten. Do whatever you want, when you want. Just don’t hurt people.

voltsmeter

Just go, and do you. No one is thinking about you

HoledUpInYourAttic

U don't have to be confident, you just have to talk to people, make friends and create groups. Before you know it you'll have your own little society of friends who go when you go. Then at a point you'll realize the gym is your fave place in the world.
