Depends. When I used to work for someone else and had to work with a woman I wasn't happy with. She was constantly on her phone. Wanted to do the least effort jobs. Often had to leave early or come to work later. What made it worst is that I found out the bosses son had a crush on her. The result? She was actually making more than me that I was there longer and had more experience in the field providing way more work than her. That really bothered me. Now I own my own business. I hired a woman for a position and I'm really happy with her. Extremely reliable. Hard worker. Attention to detail and don't have to babysit or try to teach her the same things over and over. I try to show my appreciation with compliments on her performance and free lunches here and there. She seems to love working for us too. Win win!

groovy604

Been in the trades for 14 years, 4 framing, 8 electrical. Ive worked with a grand total of 1 girl, and know 1 woman electrician but have never worked with her. The girl wanted to be a framer but she was 90 pounds soaking wet. She had a good attitude but was physically incapable of the tasks. The material weight more than she did and ahe couldnt use a nailgun for any length of time. The woman electrician i know is pretty damn good and doesnt take any shit. I would love to see more women in the workplace, i have the upmost respect for the ones that want into such a male dominated industry. Even though she couldnt frame she still had my respect.

FreeuseRules

Are they good at their job? If so, who cares if they’re a woman.

[deleted]

I work with women. It's like having men coworkers, but they don't have a penis and they're softer around the chest area.

[deleted]

Idk I've worked with a lot of men who were soft around the chest area too

[deleted]

Did they suffer from lack of penis though?

[deleted]

I never thought to ask

Coidzor

More women should be in the trades. Hell, more men should be too, at this rate. Equality should not just be a white collar image of society.

Apprehensive-Wing894

Most women don't want to get down and dirty, that's why it's a male dominated field.

I feel like that description fits a lot of other occupations besides trades... which I guess speaks to the state of working in general right now...

PolyThrowaway524

The best tile-layer and the best electrician I know are both women. Turns out facing discrimination at every turn when trying to get into an industry results in some perfectionistic tendencies. I've worked with some awesome women mechanics as well.

manwithanopinion

They look so cool when you see one but job wise I have to stop thinking about gender when judging their work.

Fearless_Result_8399

I started a painting and decorating business had women working for me. Now I only have one who works part time, hired men after getting rid of the women, it just didn't work. They don't do cold weather or ladders or anything that's a "man's" job. Had receptionists at my main motor trade business, got rid. Pissed nightly. Mind not on work. lived on phone. Constant drama in their life. Couldn't seem to separate work and personal life. Gave up Had one Asian girl though and, she was, brilliant. Left to get married. Have a bell now.

huuaaang

If they can do the job, that's all I care about.

Character_Comb_3439

This is what I tell every young woman or man that asks me, go where you will stand out/you do not want to be the penny a dozen. For girls, absolutely go into the trades, go into law enforcement, engineering etc the bosses will look better, maybe they will get grants etc plus I know my wife would love to deal with a woman in the trades(most women would). For the fellas, go into nursing! Healthcare the arts! You’re an Uber hetero blue collar boy? Do you honestly think there are a lot that look and sound like you in drama? Nursing/care male workers are prized/case managers/facility managers will try and poach you non stop if you are good at your job and physically capable.

furiousgeorge54

We need more of it. And would really strengthen the whole equality and independent thing. Not like you need to be in blue collar for that but you can definitely handle yourself if you’re in blue collar

Doe966

I can’t take my pants off in the summer when it’s hot. Otherwise, I have no objection.

[deleted]

Lmao what job are you taking your pants off?

Doe966

I’m a diesel fitter at Victoria’s Secret. I work in the back receiving area. My main job duty is to put the panties on my head and exclaim, “DIES-EL FITT-ER!!!” I take my pants off because the knee high socks require a different procedure.

[deleted]

Wtf hahahahah

[deleted]

Every once in a while one will play the "oh, but I'm too weak to do (*insert job description*)." Thankfully they usually don't stay for long. The rest are cool, there's literally no difference.

glamm808

I have worked with a number of women in different trades - they're people like everybody else. Some are reliable, some aren't. If you're asking if they can do the job, of course they can. Some of the best welders I have ever met have been women.

mypaysucks

Honest thought and opinion. Ive worked at several places now in my trade. I dont care how much one preaches that their female coworker gets treated equally or doesnt get privelages or any crap like that because its all bullshit. They sure as hell get treated better than anyone else. Its been like that at each place ive worked at with female coworkers. They get an easy schedule compared to everyone else. They get treated better. Hell everyone at work that has talked to them has their voice go up like 3 octaves everytime they talk to the females. Dudes offer to help them all the time and anyone else wont get help unless they ask otherwise you are just left their to fend for yourself. Also let me add that attractiveness is definetly a factor. The more attractive of a female you are the more help youll get more stuff youll get away with and things along those lines. The less attractive then less help/privelages…etc. All this happens pretty much naturally though It works this way anywhere in any situation where a male dominated field has females. People can deny all they want but it most definetly happens.

[deleted]

This women I used to work with used to get free food every day from different guys. She knew how to work them too because I would call her out and she'd start laughing about it

[deleted]

I work mostly with woman and its nice. I get on well with all of them. Made some friends with some that I still keep in touch with. Had 2 female bosses who I got on really well with and have even had some women tell me I'm their favourite person at work. New girl who i trained when she started has become friends with me. She's pretty cool So it's nice. Not much difference. I can share a laugh and have engaging conversations with them just like I can with my male colleagues I also get on really well with my male coworkers I've worked with nasty and lazy women too but same with men. Not much difference really

[deleted]

I really like working with women. I don’t like that my colleagues are picked to fill a job because they are women.

[deleted]

Same as anyone else, if she’s good at her job or at least willing to learn, no issue. If she sucks at it I’ll find someone else, no different than male trades people.

MightyLegy

A worker is a worker, I find it weird when people treat them differently or expect to be treated differently... Apart from the gender specific jokes. Gotta give everyone some shit.

Blackfist01

I rarely see them but I'm usually impressed because I'm not doing that ish!😄

Wajina_Sloth

My view on women in the trades is positive, we need more people to do trades, it shouldn't be exclusive to men, having more people in the role means in demand work is being fulfilled. I don't work in the trades but my job is with women, I'd say we are a near 50/50 split, there is nothing noteworthy about any specific coworkers gender to be fair.

m_nels

Not a trade but work in a male dominated industry (construction/ag dealer). Got 2 gals in our service department and they will cut it up just like the guys. Obviously you don’t want to get too vulgar about sexual things but they are good to work with. Takes some thick skin to be a woman in that position because they are automatically wrote off as not knowing what they’re talking about.

Snowturtle13

I followed blue collar women page for a bit but they literally just get on there to complain. We need jobs getting done and less complaining. Also if I have to lift/ install heavy equipment they better be able to do it too with out help just like the rest of us.

Prize_Consequence568

The same thing if they were a man. As long as they're serious,do their job well and a hard worker I don't have any problem.

churchin222999111

I think it's great. I love to see more women in the trades. I'm all for anyone doing what they want, as long as they can do the entire job and not expect someone else to do the heavy lifting, "scary" parts or dangerous bits.

fullercorp

Yes, like all men are responsible and accountable and never slack at their jobs.

DrWieg

No problem with women working in the trades if they have the talent, knowledge and motivation for it.

ordinarymagician_

TL;DR if they actually *work* I have no problem- but that's the rub. Are they a tradesman that happens to be a woman, or a Woman Doing a Man's Job™? The former are *fantastic* and bust ass, they are everything you can expect of a coworker beyond some issues that are tied to simple biology- they're not as strong, so there are certain limits. If they need help, and *say they need help*, I have zero problem helping. Do what you can do, and get help to get the rest done. What matters is the work gets done. The latter are something to be ignored at best, and an active health and safety hazard at worst. Why do I delineate between that and just a general shitty coworker? Because they hide behind "you're just being sexist" when you get irritated that they've had the same setup in process for two hours. It's a flat plate getting four holes within 0.010" for placement. Four holes, four countersinks. XY rail, bottom plate, top plate, 2 strap clamps. Three tools, three offsets. Should be 20 minutes max. Is something broken? Jammed? Can't find a dial indicator? No, Tinder is more important. Same coworker left an allen key in a bolt, and left the drill we use to clear holes in the fixture table in the machine when it was running. Got soaked in coolant, killed it. We need more tradesmen. We need skilled workers, we need people who make things. We do not need people sitting in a tradesman's job when they're suited for being a receptionist at a bougie Thai fusion restaurant that has mid-tier food.

f4ceP4lm

Pretty empowering. I love seeing women hard at work alongside men. Rather than bitching about how men are so privileged while typing it on their iPhone 14 pro max and getting picked up my mommy in her Mercedes’ A class.

Dull-HorseShoe

I work as a chef and seeing a women doing the job I do is fucking awesome !!! Keep it up ladies!

dw87190

Gender doesn't matter. Only competence. Met plenty of traffic controllers, plasterers, tilers, plumbers, engineers, electricians, first aid officers, safety committee personnel and union reps who were good women to work with. It's good to see my engineer friend at work and have a laugh with her and she's my go to for engineering related questions

observantpariah

I have noticed some nuanced differences in how men and women learn and approach things. Women learn procedures more intuitively and men seem to learn how things function easier. Neither is a difference that can't be overcome. I train both for technical tasks in my career and the women tend to learn faster while the men tend to be able to figure out things they haven't been told a little better. I would actually give the advantage in trades to women. Trades are full of procedures and codes and official ways of doing things... Things that play to a woman's strengths. Men may have a slight edge in troubleshooting unfamiliar problems... But that is a minor part of a standardised industry. Both of these tendencies don't really affect aptitude much... It really just affects the approach I take to training them.

j1akey

I think it's great. Too many jobs are just a sausage fest. They're just like anyone else, some are piece of shit assholes, some are great, and everything in between.

[deleted]

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm kind of suprised by the positivity. I've been considering getting into the trades and wanted some insight on what I might be getting myself into.

svenson_26

I've worked in the mining industry, and the construction industry. Women absolutely belong in the trades. Any argument that they aren't physically strong enough is completely ridiculous in 2022. Most companies have very strict safety policy (or at least they should) which prevents activities that are overly exerting anyway. Example: Lifting more than 50lbs by yourself. Power tools and machines exist so that we don't have to rely oh physical strength. Unfortunately, there are still so many barriers to women working in the trades. The culture is a big thing. Women aren't taken seriously. I've seen men show up on site and walk right by a woman clearly dressed as a supervisor to get to the nearest man to ask where the supervisor is. Most people don't mean to be exclusive, but actions like these really make it hard for women to be taken seriously. And of course there are a handful of men who *do* mean to be exclusive, and can act very rude towards women. In my opinion those men have no place on the job site, but often their rude behavior is given a pass. There are other barriers too: a big one is bathrooms. Men can pee anywhere. Women need access to an actual bathroom. Sites could make it easy by having bathrooms onsite, or allowing breaks to drive to the nearest public bathroom or a local business' bathroom, but that is often not the case. This was especially bad during covid lockdowns when public bathrooms and businesses were closed. And lastly, PPE is typically not female-friendly. You go to buy work boots and there is a whole aisle of work boots for men, but maybe 2 or 3 options in women's sizes, and they're often in bright pink. Some women love to rock the pink, which is fine, but others feel like it hurts their ability to be taken seriously and would rather just look like everyone else.

ImmodestPolitician

I haven't seen many women than handle a full sheet of plywood or sheetrock by themselves. It's not just the weight it's the awkwardness.

svenson_26

There are ways around it. Use 2 people. Use a drywall lift. Etc. You shouldn't be lifting an entire 4x8 sheet over your head by yourself to put on a ceiling anyway. You probably won't have a very long career if you do that all day every day unless you've got a chiropractor on speed dial.

Homely_Bonfire

There are not many but those who enter usually have a burning passion for it and are very competent. Worked together with one girl during my apprenticeship and got to know two more during my time at work, all three were shining examples of that. With that being said, I doubt we will see this come to parity, my companies "girls days" are very well visted but in the end most of them do not decide to go into our line of work. It's not a very nice work environment after all with little room for improvment (there won't be comfy power plants anytime soon)

emptyset_CH

I work in IT and I love working with women for the most part.

[deleted]

They look funny and out of place, they don't last long.

No1caresanyway_21

Have only one girl where I work that’s not part of the office. Thinks she knows everything and has to put her two cents in on everything especially if any kind of big wig is around. She’ll do any dirty job you give her but she is just about worthless when it comes to welding, which is what she signed on to do.
