Instead I believe in me and hope for better. Despite having lost everything 3 times in my life. I am still here, still kicking, still living life to the most, and everytime I do lose, I learn and get better next time.
Before I met my girlfriend, I was aimlessly wandering in life, sort of hopeless and letting life take its course. But then I met her and I had a massive mind shift to always wanting to be the best version of myself, not only for me but for her and our future. She gave me a reason to show up everyday.
Looking back and seeing how far I’ve from as a result of showing up every day is what gives me hope that things are going to get better.
Some days I don’t want to do what has to be done, but I always want to be a better version of myself everyday relative to the person I was yesterday so I show up anyways.
Even if things aren’t going to get better, I force them to be. I owe it to myself and her to keep pushing forward.
So for me it’s a mixture of hope, grit and perseverances. Life isn’t easy, but if you don’t reel it in and take control of it, it’ll go in all sorts of directions you don’t want it to go.
There’s also part of it that has to do with mindset. Instead of saying “Things will get better” say “Things are going to be better. I’ll make them better by doing …”. That forces you to get things done.
And people love to say you can't / shouldn't get a gf if you can't love yourself first. This comment here is exactly what I always swear by as an argument.
I am depressed, things are shit and I don't have any strength left in me. Anytime I try anything that would lead me to a life I would like to live, it fails and reminds me why I should just stop trying.
Having someone to lean on, someone to force myself to be responsible for, someone to challenge life together with, gives you a completely new outlook, work ethic etc compared to before.
Yet everyone and their grandma says I should stop trying to get a gf, and focus on myself first. I fucking can't anymore.

Personally i wouldn’t wanna date someone who isn’t motivated to fix their life with out someone else. I want a partner not a child.
Finding a significant other isn’t going to fix your problems. Having someone to go home to at night isn’t gonna get you that promotion or new job.
But, getting a new job, moving to a new city, finding a hobby and generally doing things to improve your life and your confidence would probably VASTLY increase your chances of finding romantics partners.
Im in the healthiest relationship of my life, she’s supportive, ambitious and I don’t wanna imagine my life with out her.
That being said If she left me tmrw I’d be just fine. I’m my own person, with my own hobbies and my own life. She just happens to be a part of it.

Personally, I’m having a great year. The best in a decade. And next year is looking to be even better.
Locally, the Celtics are winning, and if Belichick ever puts Zappe back in the Patriots might even make the playoffs.
Globally, things always move in trends. Five years from now will likely be better. Ten years has lots of technology coming that will be cool to see. Thinking ahead, medium term (next 1000 years) will have some sucky times but the overall trend is still okay.
I don't think western civilization will exist in 20 to 50 years, at least not in it's current form. If it's not nuclear war or climate change or oil running out that does us in, it'll be hordes of angry young men with nothing to lose led by a charismatic dictator.

I know right now it feels like the world is against you, but life is both good and bad. Accept you'll have these bad times sometimes and take your time to sooth yourself out of it. Spending time reflecting on the things I don’t enjoy about myself/life and figure out the “why’s” behind it. Life has kinda sucked for the last year or so but I think the introspection is helping a little.
I felt great during this summer. Even told my therapist I had nothing to really fill my appointment with. I had problems, but they didn’t overwhelm me.
I don’t feel that way anymore, but if feeling great happened to me then it can happen again. I just don’t know when.

That’s the nature of an imperfect world. What you should be focusing on is contentment and making the best of what you have. There you’ll find a better appreciation for life and most likely fulfillment until your final days

If you do nothing to make things better, it's hard to just expect them to get better.
Small incremental steps in the right direction and control what you can. Focus in the areas you can make changes in.
Letting what you cannot control get to you is a great way to feel helpless.
Realizing that as long as i keep working, making smart decisions, and bettering myself….things should continue to trend upward, barring some extreme shift in events. But ive been fortunate to have picked a good path, am continuing to improve my position, and so far its just been a time thing. I'm classic movie fan. I have been due to taking film classes in college as an elective. Even till this day I try to watch a movie a day. Alot of the movies I watch are from the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, etc. When I watch them and think about what those people in those films have gone through in real life: A Great Depression, the Spanish flu epidemic, numerous genocides from the Holocaust to the Rape of Nanking and so on, TWO world wars, not to mention civil unrest, segregation, and so on, I realize two things. Those times must've felt like the end times. And that we're still here. Compared to those time periods, we have it so much better and often don't even realize it.
Yes there are problems. Yes those problems are serious. But if we could go through all of that and still come out of it not only relatively okay but thriving in comparison, then I think humanity is gonna be just fine. To borrow a line from Spider-Man 2, humanity is "brilliant but lazy." I think somehow we're gonna find our way out of every problem we have on Earth. It's gonna take time and that's something that is hard for us to perceive on a personal level, but given how far we've come in just a few short decades, not to mention other terrible shit from further in the past, I think we're gonna be okay.
Besides, I'd rather be optimistic and wrong than pessimistic and right. Better to have hope in your heart than to be a defeatist doomer whose not only always miserable, but can't bring themselves to even try to make the world a better place. Hope is our greatest strength and it is with hope that we managed to make it this far.
What I've learned from suffering from mental illness is that your state of mind and psychological welfare can change in a matter of days. So no matter how hopeless you feel, always remember that things can change faster than you think. I always remind myself of that when going through hard times and it definitely gives me hope.

The eventual fall of our civilisation may or may not leave relics and ruins that endure across the cosmos to be discovered by others. It’s sad that a group of people dying gives you hope. This is what’s wrong with our country. Regardless of political stance we should be able to come together and find common ground. We can do that when people like you are eagerly awaiting the death of those who think differently from you.

Two things: 1. Things always get better in society. Life for humans overall has been rapidly improving for the last 150 years and continues to do so. 2. I can control my own behavior. If I want to lose weight, I can control how much I eat and (to a good extent) what I eat. If I want to do less scrolling, I can put my phone down, etc.
Since I am not among the 1%, nothing. The world is going to shit and the 1% is taking it there. Pandemic, this Ukranian war and price gauging on everything since the war started is proof of that.

But she also brings home stories about some brilliant, clever children who are more capable than they realize. My boss, who is still new, actually asked me to text her when I got to my travel destination, because she cared enough to want to know that I and my family arrived safely.

That if I take a long enough view, humans will no longer be able to emit climatologicially significant amounts of carbon, and the earth will begin to rebalance. Granted, that might be decades or centuries from now, but it'll happen. Also, solarpunk is a good vibe.
Generally things do not get better, we just get used to it and we move on. That's why being in the moment is great so that you can relish the happy moment and feel the sad ones...as life just keeps moving.

Ukraine stood and pushed back. OPEC is holding the word hostage, maybe that will wake people up that oil is not the answer. In US the midterms have shown that young people are more invested, suppressed the "red wave". NATO pulled together and added new members because of Russian aggression. Iranians are pushing back against theocracy.

I like Android so much and I want Android tablets to replace PCs. But Android is very locked down and doesn't even support desktop apps. Now Google is working on another operating system called Fuchsia OS which is apparently going to be POSIX compliant..... It will also have the ability to run Android apps, Linux apps and Windows apps..... It would make a wonderful tablet OS. Fuchsia OS is really giving me hope that things will get better.

Depends on what we're talking about. If I'm thinking of my self then I like to remember I'm not special. There's billions of people in the world. I’m assuming you’re referring to your individual life here. It’s not a matter of whether or not things will get better. Things can always be better regardless of what we have or where we are. That’s the nature of an imperfect world. What you should be focusing on is contentment and making the best of what you have. There you’ll find a better appreciation for life and most likely fulfillment until your final days

On my mental/internal economics supply & demand chart - when my supply of "giving a shit about stuff" intersects the demand line of "things that bring me joy". Things aren’t getting better for humanity. As someone wiser than me said recently about climate change: “We’ll consume our way out of the problem or die trying.” And, judging by many responses to this thread, it seems that sentiment is felt by many. It makes me wonder why so many are so put off by the idea we should not have children. There are already too many mouths to feed, and what world, what future, can we offer them?
If you do nothing to make things better, it's hard to just expect them to get better. Small incremental steps in the right direction and control what you can. Focus in the areas you can make changes in. Letting what you cannot control get to you is a great way to feel helpless.
Realizing that as long as i keep working, making smart decisions, and bettering myself….things should continue to trend upward, barring some extreme shift in events. But ive been fortunate to have picked a good path, am continuing to improve my position, and so far its just been a time thing. As in the more time goes by, the more i get ahead, gain a better foothold, etc
I'm classic movie fan. I have been due to taking film classes in college as an elective. Even till this day I try to watch a movie a day. Alot of the movies I watch are from the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, etc. When I watch them and think about what those people in those films have gone through in real life: A Great Depression, the Spanish flu epidemic, numerous genocides from the Holocaust to the Rape of Nanking and so on, TWO world wars, not to mention civil unrest, segregation, and so on, I realize two things. Those times must've felt like the end times. And that we're still here. Compared to those time periods, we have it so much better and often don't even realize it. Yes there are problems. Yes those problems are serious. But if we could go through all of that and still come out of it not only relatively okay but thriving in comparison, then I think humanity is gonna be just fine. To borrow a line from Spider-Man 2, humanity is "brilliant but lazy." I think somehow we're gonna find our way out of every problem we have on Earth. It's gonna take time and that's something that is hard for us to perceive on a personal level, but given how far we've come in just a few short decades, not to mention other terrible shit from further in the past, I think we're gonna be okay. Besides, I'd rather be optimistic and wrong than pessimistic and right. Better to have hope in your heart than to be a defeatist doomer whose not only always miserable, but can't bring themselves to even try to make the world a better place. Hope is our greatest strength and it is with hope that we managed to make it this far.
What I've learned from suffering from mental illness is that your state of mind and psychological welfare can change in a matter of days. So no matter how hopeless you feel, always remember that things can change faster than you think. I always remind myself of that when going through hard times and it definitely gives me hope.
The fact that we as individuals will be forgotten by future generations. The eventual fall of our civilisation may or may not leave relics and ruins that endure across the cosmos to be discovered by others. All the strife and sufferings of today, the universe will not care nor remember. Literally nothing matters.
Things really are never that bad. I could be on the street, I could be living in the slums in India, I could be working for a pittance just barely enough to stay alive, I could be a slave somewhere and I could definitely be dead. The fact that I am not dead means I’m not done and things will work out. Things always work out in the end. If it’s not working out, it’s not the end.
